Greetings to readers,This is a good time as it marks the beginning of Thailand’s New Year. During this time,

Thailand has the highest temperature of the year including rain showers and thunder storms in

All of these factors have contributed to large amounts of data

running on the Internet and intranets. The data include images,

audio files, text messages, and data transfer on the Internet. The

telecom providers need to handle data generated from device

communications and also a huge set of data that is travelling

in their networks. This posts a new challenge in terms of data

handling and network bandwidth management.

On the other hand, big data can create a new business oppor-

tunity for vendors who can come up with new ways of making

income or creating new products that can help address the issue.

Business opportunities from Big DataEffective usage and revenue generation from big data are

contributed by overall data management methods including

procedures for data storing, logging, searching, and analyzing.

The real value of big data comes from advanced data analysis

through data mining, statistical analysis tools, data optimization

and forecasting. These capabilities can transform a large amount

of data into useful pieces of information which can be used to

drive business and support decision making.

Some telecommunication providers have provided

services for their large organization and retail customers

to access big data, which are then used to support the

decision making for new store opening. For example,

big data analysis could determine customer behaviors

in each geographical area, i.e. the number of customers

who walk past the stores daily; the ratio of male

and female customers in each period of the day; the

number of customers who actually live in the same area

at the store; and the store that is most visited by target

customers. Another recent example was the cooperation

between Google and the U.S. Department of Health and

Human Services to use big data for predicting yearly flu

trends to find prevention.

To overcome challenges and achieve real business

values, organizations must upgrade their IT infrastructure

as well as build knowledge on data repository and

business models – all of which will facilitate data handling

and drive revenue generation from big data.

Big Data and their enormous opportunityLarge organizations and telecommunication service providers are now facing a new, big challenge of handling big data – structured and unstructured – generated from mobile devices that connect to the Internet all the time. What’s more, there are data which come from smart devices that connect to the “Internet of Things” – a circumstance where every device can automatically connect to the Internet and communicate to one another.

On one hand, because of powerful features that come with

these mobile devices, they can undoubtedly raise employee

productivity for any organizations. On the other hand, these

devices can be thought of as another piece of hardware in a

computer network. Like any other devices or computers, their

operating systems and network connection protocols may

contain potential vulnerabilities that can cause security risks and

problems that IT teams must manage in order to comply with

organizations’ IT security policies.

Things to ponderOne of the most significant factors of the BYOD policy for-

mulation is the user identification and authorization as well

as identification of the mobile devices that are connecting to

organization networks. At the same time, organizations should

ensure that all sensitive and confidential data must not be

stored on these devices. They must also specify access rights

that notebook and mobile device users could have in accessing

the IT resources in the organization networks, such as access

to main data, printers, intranet systems, customer databases,

research and marketing data as well as company confidential

documents.

User and device identificationA BYOD solution must be able to identify connecting

devices and the operating systems, such as Windows, Mac OS,

iOS, Android or Blackberry. The solution should also be able

to specify individual wireless network access policy as well as

application usage policy for each device type.

This setting enables organizations to specify the level of network

access rights according to device types. For example, users who

use company notebooks may be granted access to different

network resources than those who use iPads, Android phones

or personal computers. Furthermore, the policy can even identify

the number of personal devices that users can bring to use in

the organizations.

Consequently, many network and IT security management solu-

tion providers all agreed that the BYOD is an important topic

that most organizations should strongly consider. Each leading

solution provider brings out many different solutions including

an application that remotely examines and controls personal

devices; a registration system that examines and controls

accessed data; and a control device that monitors data and

network access according to a BYOD policy.

BYOD – The hottest trend that organizations shouldn’t ignore Wireless technology and mobile devices offer enormous capabilities and convenience for users. More and more consumers have become mobile phone and tablet users and used them for both personal entertainment and work. Many of these users started to bring their own devices to the offices and connect them to access the organization network and IT resources. As a result, the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy has become one of the hottest topics that every organization should consider very carefully.

DR SITE

Nowadays, IT systems are a critical part of every organization.

Senior executives and IT managers in both government

agencies and private companies need to look for an alternative

to ensure business continuity in case of emergency. Establishing

a Disaster Recovery Site that can resume normal computing

capabilities in short time after a site disaster can provide a

solution that ensures smooth continuity of business activities.

Types of DR SitesAt present, DR Site can be classified into 5 types depending on

the type of business and criticality of the operations.

l Hot Sites are duplicates of the primary sites, with data being

stored on both sites simultaneously. Hot sites are considered

as mirror sites to the primary sites and provide instantaneous

recovery of operations when the primary sites fail but require

a significant investment of money.

l Warm Sites are incomplete duplicates of the primary sites,

but data from the primary sites are only backed up and used

for recovery. Warm sites require time to restore data and

install, after which normal operations can be resumed.

l Cold Sites have the basic infrastructure needed to run a

data center, such as network and power connectivity, server

racks, and air conditioning. In the event of disaster, cold sites

From the descriptions above, hot sites are clearly the ideal

backup site that every organization wants. However, to build a

A newly released report by GfK shows that about 41.5 million

units of smartphones were purchased by consumers from

Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Cambodia

and the Philippines this year.

Indonesia demonstrated the highest smartphone sales volume

and value in these emerging markets with consumers in the

market purchasing 14.8 million smartphones worth over US$

3.33 billion.

The next highest smartphone sales was recorded by Thailand

and Malaysia as they sold 7.2 million and 6.4 million units

respectively.

“The increasing affordability of smartphones, particularly in

the developing markets is helping many consumers in these

countries make the switch from their basic feature phones to

own their very first smartphone,” said GfK Asia analyst.

Android rulesWith a wide selection of brands, models and price points to

choose from, Android has grabbed a huge 72 percent market

share and is extensively used in Philippines, Malaysia, and

Singapore. Percentage of Android smartphones sales jumped

from 37 to 60 percent within a year, in Indonesia.

The reason Android smartphones have higher market share far

more than iPhone and Window Phone is because of the price.

With less than US$ 60, you can own an Android smartphone.

South Asian consumers now prefer larger screen sizes, and the

sale of 4 inches and above smartphones has doubled this year.

27% of smartphones sold in the first three quarters of this year

has a screen size of at least 4 inches.

That predicts continued uptrend and exponential growth in the

smartphone market in this region and advises manufacturers

to target the 50 percent of feature phone buyers who have not

yet switched to using these devices.

Big Screen SmartphoneThe latest trend in the market now is phablets, which is defined

as mobile devices with cellular voice phone functionality and

a display between 5.6 inches and 6.99 inches, Launched only

recently around mid-2013, over 460,000 have already been sold

and we will likely see greater take-up as more models enter

market and they become radically inexpensive. Who would

have believed that a large screen smartphone could now cost

less than 5,000 baht.

Southeast Asia upgrades to SmartphonesConsumers in Southeast Asia are upgrading from basic mobile phones to smartphones and they spent a total of US$10.8 billion on these devices in the first three quarters of 2013.

Today’s technological evolution in Thailand would have never

made possible if it was not for the efforts of Prof. Dr. Kanchana

Kanchanasut and other visionary university professors who could

foresee the benefits the country would receive from establishing

a computer network. Creating a viable national network could

be one of the main drivers that help country development and

education improvement in Thailand. “The development of the

Internet in Thailand began in 1986 to enable Thai professors

to send e-mails to universities in Japan, Australia, and United

States of America by connecting to a 2400-bps modem,” said

Prof. Dr. Kanchana.

THNIC cooperation with TCCTOne of the biggest developments of the Internet in Thailand

was the setup of Thai Network Information Center Foundation

(THNIC), whose main responsibility is to provide domain name

registration services under “.TH”. In the recent “.TH” 25th anniver-

sary conference, various parties all agreed that it was time that

Thailand should really establish the Neutral Internet Exchange.

Prof. Dr. Kanchana added, “The main purpose of Neutral Internet

Exchange or IX is to optimize the Internet connection in Thailand

while reducing the Internet service costs for users and providing

maximum benefits for the general public.”

This marked the beginning of the cooperation between THNIC

and TCC Technology. The latter party will provide data center

service to help accelerate the Neutral Internet Exchange

establishment. “TCCT has expertise in information system and

data center services. This has opened the way for the organi-

zation to become the chosen partner to provide data center

services as the first Thailand’s Neutral Internet Exchange or

IX center.” Prof. Dr. Kanchana said.

Internet Hall of FameAside from making a huge impact in the local technology

industry, Prof. Dr. Kanchana also made a contribution in the

global arena. In the past, she has been chosen as one of the

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers)

members during its initial inception. The main duty of the

organization is to manage the global Internet resources, which

consist of IP addresses, domain names, protocol parameters,

and related regulations. Because of her significant roles and

contribution, Prof. Dr. Kanchana has been inducted into the

Internet Hall of Fame, which is a recognition award that

celebrates the individuals whose extraordinary contributions

have made the global Internet. All of these have made Prof. Dr.

Kanchana the true pride and glory of Thailand’s Internet industry.

For more than 27 years, Prof. Dr. Kanchana has helped push

and collaborated with government agencies and private

companies to develop and adopt the use of Internet in Thailand.

She also helped set up the Neutral Internet Exchange, despite

many obstacles arising from differing opinions about the Internet

and varying business processes in private companies. Today,

thanks to Prof. Dr. Kanchana Kanchanasut’s commitment,

Thailand’s Internet industry has tremendously evolved and is

moving strongly forward into the future.

Offering a wide array of beverage products, ThaiBev is a

big manufacturer that comprises numerous business groups.

Effective business operations must be enabled by a robust

IT system that can serve every business needs. “Judged

from the high number of transactions and business groups,

ThaiBev is considered to be a large-scale company. Our IT

team is responsible for managing a part of IT infrastructure and

systems for 70 companies in total, with hundreds of thousands of

transactions per month,” explained Teerapan Luengnaruemitchai,

Director, Office of Information Technology at Thai Beverage

PLC. “To enable ThaiBev to respond to consumers’ needs and

fierce competition in the beverage market, our IT system must

be capable of fulfilling all of our business requirements while

delivering transparent operations, management and accounting

data as well as implementing good corporate governance

practices.

IT challengesLike any large organizations with subsidiaries, each business

group under ThaiBev has had their own IT and accounting

systems with disparate data sources. That means each company

has had its own distinct set of product ID, customer ID, and

partner ID. This problem has impeded the company’s ability to

expand and compete in the fast-changing market.

The company management agreed that, if this problem still

continued, at the end, ThaiBev would have had to hire a larger

IT team to support all of the IT systems. And with its plan of

entering the stock market, it was necessary for ThaiBev to

rectify the problem and reengineer the whole IT infrastructure

to comply with the good corporate governance practices. “To

reengineer our IT systems, we needed a world-class solution.

Everyone in this project all agreed that it should be the ERP

(Enterprise Resource Planning) solution from SAP, which is

the world’s leading ERP solution,” Teerapan said. “Finally, we

decided to adopt a Cloud-based SAP solution and outsourced all

of our IT deployment tasks to a professional third-party service

provider. This will help support future business expansion for us

and allow our IT team to focus on developing IT infrastructure

to facilitate our internal business operations.”

However, ThaiBev faced another challenge: how the company

would utilize and fully take advantage of a state-of-the-art and

complex solution like ERP, without having to hire more IT staff.

Generally, to support SAP applications, many organizations

would need to add 4-5 more IT staff. With ThaiBev, because

of its size, it would need to add a lot more than that.

SAP deployment for 35 companies within short periodTo respond to such challenges, ThaiBev established a

standard business process for systems and data aggregation

and implemented it across every subsidiary company. After the

data was refined, it was imported into SAP ERP system. “After

we successfully deployed SAP to the first company with the

aggregated data sources and system, we could make and use

that as a template to roll out to other companies. As a result,

the deployment took only short time to achieve and required

not many people to do it,” Teerapan added. “The standard busi-

ness process and data template have enabled us to achieve the

successful SAP deployment in a short timeframe using small

workforce. In 2008, we had a big IT project where we deployed

SAP for 35 companies simultaneously and could finish it in just

only 1.5 years. It could be said that we had made a new record

for fastest SAP deployment in Thailand. Also, we rolled out

the system to the subsidiary companies in less than 30 days.”

Professional supportApart from having the standard work process and data sources,

another factor contributing to the success of the project was

a support from a team of professionals. ThaiBev has chosen

to adopt the SAP application hosted on Cloud, with TCC

Technology (TCCT) helping to manage the IT infrastructure for

the company. “TCCT’s expertise in SAP data center helped

enable 100% availability of ThaiBev’s SAP services. TCCT

managed our system with great efficiency and effectively planned

system resources according to different system loads during

the day. We have outsourced all of our system administration

tasks – both infrastructure and SAP services – to TCCT. Our

main application is hosted in TCCT’s data center which is

monitored and handled 24/7 by the company. Our in-house

IT team takes care of the IT applications that are directly

involved with ThaiBev’s internal operations such as application

configuration or user exit development.”

Moving strongly into the futureThanks to the standard work process and templates that

enabled rapid deployment along with the support from a

team of professionals, ThaiBev’s IT infrastructure achieved the

flexibility and robustness in handling the fast-changing

business environment. For this reason, ThaiBev has undoubtedly

become a strong organization whose transparent operations will

propel the company to become one of the greatest beverage

manufacturers in the world.

While several Thai entrepreneurs and investors focus on

expanding their business to other ASEAN countries, financial

experts believe that Thailand still has a very strong potential

and is most equipped to become the heart of ASEAN, which

can help attract more foreign investors. Thailand is considered

to be a strong global manufacturer and has one of the world’s

fastest growing hospitality industries – the capabilities that

can allure many investors. All of this will create new, exciting

business opportunities for Thai investors to expand their

business in the future.

Thai Military Bank (TMB)’s research indicates that, in order

to attract more investors, Thai entrepreneurs must formulate

new strategies to accommodate foreign investors. The new

strategies must cover 4 aspects that will help secure Thailand

as an investment hub in the ASEAN region.

Innovation: Currently, Thailand’s research and

development spending is the 3rd biggest in ASEAN and

41st biggest in the world behind Singapore and Malaysia. The

estimated spending is around 1.46 billion dollars or 0.25% of

the GNP (Gross National Product). The industry which should

be granted with the most research and development budget is

the agricultural products as Thailand is the number-one natural

rubber exporter in ASEAN. However, most of the exported

rubbers are in the crepe rubber form, which adds little value

to the product.

Environmental awareness: This is one of the topics

that Thai companies should be most concerned about

as this will demonstrate the responsibility to the world’s

environment.

Cooperation with other member countries: Thailand

should focus on industry cooperation with other ASEAN

member countries. For example, Thailand can become a regional

hub for the automotive industry through cooperation with other

neighboring countries including Indonesia and Malaysia. Thailand

automotive industry is the 9th largest in the world; Indonesia,

17th; and Malaysia, 23

rd, with a collective annual output of 4.2

million vehicles or 5% of the world’s production output.

Moreover, Thailand’s Tourism Industry can also be leveraged.

Thailand is located at the heart of ASEAN and has world-class

airport facilities, so it is easy for the country to cooperate and

send tourists to such countries as Malaysia, Lao, and Myanmar.

Manufacturing industry efficiency: Thai companies

should strengthen its manufacturing capabilities while

producing value-added products.

If Thai companies really pursue these strategies, Thailand’s

dream of becoming a regional business hub, with strong

capabilities and potential, will certainly come true.

AEC and Thailand’s readiness for foreign investment

Thailand has faced tough challenges over the past few years. Many fear that Thailand has lost its appeal for foreign investors. However, compared to neighboring countries in terms of geographical location and economic structure, Thailand proves to be in an advantageous position. Located at the heart of ASEAN, Thailand can be thought of as the gateway that offers easy access geographically to other ASEAN as well as major Asian countries including China, Japan, and India. With this quality, many experts all agree that Thailand still remains as the most attractive investment destination in the Southeast Asian region.

Recently, Techno Society has had an opportunity to meet with Khun

Chalermpol Tuchinda, Director of Software Park Thailand, and discussed

about the organization’s vision regarding Thailand’s software industry

development which will enhance strength for all industries in Thailand.

Before taking the role of the director of Software Park Thailand,

Khun Chalermpol Tuchinda received his Bachelor’s degree in

Management Information System and Master’s degree in Business

Administration from Southern New Hampshire University in the USA.

He started his career at Biz News Public Company Limited, overseeing

stock market information system. Then, he moved on to work for

Reuters Software (Thailand) Ltd., holding a position of Technical

Manager, and was one of the pioneers of the company. After that, he

took on the Director role for Technopreneur Development and Services

Division, National Science and Technology Development Agency

(NSTDA) as well.

Global Software Gateway – Viable strategy to stimulate Thailand’s software industry“Software Park Thailand aims to strengthen and support operators in the

software industry and IT professionals by any means necessary. We also

ensure that developed technologies are adopted to improve efficiencies

of various industries in Thailand. Aside from helping to strengthen the

industry and create competitive edge for the operators, Software Park

helps open marketing channels for Thai software entrepreneurs too,”

Khun Chalermpol said. “To stimulate the software industry in Thailand,

Thai developers need to extend their reaches to the international market.

This is because most Thai companies and consumers do not spend

or invest much in software. And to increase revenue, Thai software

houses need to expand regionally through our strategy of becoming the

“Global Software Gateway.” This will expose our local software house to

the foreign markets. Together with the location of the country and our

infrastructure, I am confident that Thailand is perfect to be the regional

hub for software investment and development.”

Software Park is committed to support Thai software houses through

human resource development. This includes technical and business

skill development through world-class software development courses

and business innovation training seminars. “In the past, we have

cooperated with many organizations to provide maximum benefits for

Thailand’s software industry,” added Khun Chalermpol. “At present,

we have worked with over 200 local software houses. We provide

software development training courses that fill the market’s needs

as well as helping the companies prepare for expansion and offering

business matching service. This past year, we have generated 1.229

billion baht of revenue for companies that participate in the Software

Park development program. As for this year, we hope that we can

increase the revenue up to 1.25 billion baht.”

Strengthening Thai’s business operators and preparing for AECOne of Software Park’s missions, besides improving skills for

entrepreneurs in Thai’s software industry, is to support operators in

other industry sectors and promote the use of technology to increase

the business capabilities. “We have also collaborated with various

organizations to implement the business matching program in which

we provide a chance for software houses to meet with entrepreneurs

as well as local and foreign investors who have software needs that

they can provide. This can help our local software houses to expand

their markets regionally. We also have reached an agreement with other

ASEAN members to build a technology incubator. With this, we can

exchange cooperation and experience, which eventually will result in

sustainable growth for Thailand and regional software industry so we

can achieve a faster success,” Khun Chalermpol added.

Choui Fong Tea Plantation is located in Amphur Mae Chan,

Chiang Rai province. Covering more than 1000 rai of land, Choui

Fong is considered to be one of the largest tea plantations in

Thailand, with more than 50 years of experience and expertise in

tea cultivation. Now run by the second generation, the plantation

grows tea under the optimal conditions produced by Mother

Nature. Tea leaves are harvested with utmost care and must

be picked at the most suitable timeframe.

Choui Fong Tea grows several distinctive types of tea including

Green, Jasmine and Oolong Teas. Harvested tea leaves are

sent to local and international tea manufacturers for further

transformation. Choui Fong also comes out with its own in-house

tea-based products.

Choui Fong Tea plantation offers a magnificent view of terraced

green tea bushes covering rolling hillsides. Visiting the plantation

at sunrise or sunset, you can see emerald tea leaves glittering

with a golden light from the sun on the horizon – perfect for

picture taking.

If you wish, you can walk through the lush green field,

absorbing the atmosphere that you will never find in a city. You

can also capture pictures of various scenes in the plantation

which is frequently used as a set for many local movies and

drama shows. What’s more, Choui Fong Cafe offers a variety

of food, desserts, and drinks – all made with tea as ingredient.

Special dishes include spicy tuna salad with tea leaves; fried

spring rolls stuffed with tea leaves; and Yunnan Spaghetti

sprinkled with tea leaves. The restaurant also serves many

savory sweets, including green tea and Thai tea cakes as well

as green tea and Thai tea crepe cakes, which are the newest

additions to the menu. It also offers a wide selection of

tea-based drinks, such as blended Matcha with red beans or

hot oolong tea that will warm your throat and your soul.

You can stay and experience magical atmosphere while tasting

delicious, unique dishes and drinks in one of the largest tea
