The Presiding Officers invite Parliamentarians and Staff to a Science Briefing on Technologies to Improve Water Irrigation Efficiency Thursday 1 st March, 2012, 1.00pm with lunch in K Room Climate Change and national water reforms will reduce the volume of water available to produce food from irrigated agriculture. If the efficiency of water management throughout our irrigation systems is not improved this reduced water availability will impact negatively on irrigation industries, rural communities and the environment. This ATSE Parliamentary briefing will explore the smart irrigation systems that are now available or in development that can deliver significant improvements in the efficiency water use for irrigation and the environment through the integrated realtime management systems. At the paddock level new wireless sensing technologies integrated allowing the automated scheduling of irrigation events more closely tuned the plant and atmospheric demand have been demonstrated to dramatically increase the efficiency of production. At the whole farm level, National ICT Australia (NICTA) is developing FarmNet a webbased support tool for farmers that bridges the gulf between agricultural science and farmers through the use of web based tools. FarmNet aims to transform all aspects of farm management, including water, soil carbon, nutrients, by providing better access to realtime information, innovative data analysis tools and expert systems. At the whole irrigation system level we shall demonstrate that the application of control system engineering utilising closed loop feedback control systems to deliver irrigation water through the Broken River can potentially result in water savings of up to 30% while providing irrigators with dramatically improved service and some extra environmental benefits. The speakers will be: Professor Snow Barlow, FTSE, FAIAST Convener , Primary Industries Adaptation Research Network, University of Melbourne Professor Rob Evans , FAA, FTSE Director of the Victoria Research Laboratory National ICT Australia at the University of Melbourne The meeting will be chaired by: Dr Glen Kile FTSE The Parliamentary science briefings are organised by the Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) under the auspices of the Presiding Officers and with financial support from the Department of Business and Innovation Notes on the talks are available on the Parliamentary Intranet. For information or comments on future briefings contact Professor Kerry Pratt on 0407 513 553 or [email protected]
