Lasting beauty of stones

Adhesives: EMIX (HK) Limited

technologies@18

Stone is widely regarded as a timeless material for portraying quality, style

and character. While a popular choice, the key lies in a proper installation in

order for its appeal and properties to last.

Due to the costly and complicated nature of dry-fix methods, wet-fix

techniques with cementitious stone adhesives have become more common

for stone installation. However, without suitable preparation and materials,

traditional wet-fix methods face many problems such as water stains, cracks,

de-bonding, efflorescence and so on. As a pioneer supplier in dry mixed-

mortar in the region, E.MIX has been working with the industry to develop a

new stone fixing and caring system to tackle these issues.

E.MIX Stone Fixing and Caring System

This is a comprehensive solution for installing stones, which comprises

the Stone Sealer, Stone Back, Stone Fix and the Grouting series. It provides

excellent waterproof qualities, low VOCs, and is compatible with both interior

and exterior environments while keeping the stone surface appearance

unaffected.

Stone Back Series

This series features high bond strength with its waterproofing polymer modified

cementitious adhesive that has been formulated to replace traditional resin

adhesive for fixing mesh on stones. It is also fully compatible with other

cementitious materials, and is ideal for a wide range of applications.

Stone Fix Series

This series offers characteristics such as fast hardening, high strength and

water resistance. With the right amount of water, it becomes a strong, non-

slip and highly workable adhesive mortar for a variety of stone materials such

as marble, granite, slate and artificial stones. Additionally, the low alkaline

formulation reduces the chances of efflorescence.

Stone Sealer Series

This series is recommended for the protection of stone surfaces, to effectively

safeguard them against water and chemical attacks. It prevents staining and

efflorescence for both interior and exterior applications.

Grouting Series

To ensure the best overall effectiveness, this series is specifically designed to

complement other E.MIX stone fixing and caring system products. Not only

does it provide handy features such as shrinkage compensation and low water

absorption, it is also available in a range of colours to complement the natural

beauty of stone.

About the company

E.MIX is the largest dry-mixed plaster and mortar brand name in Hong

Kong and Asia, with over 80 per cent of the market share in Hong Kong. The

company has been providing services to the Hong Kong construction industry

since 1992. E.MIX has just been acquired by the Saint-Gobain group, a world

leader in a variety of high-performance construction materials, with a presence

in more than 68 countries.

New dimensions for secure and constructive bonds

Adhesives: tesa tape Asia Pacific Pte Ltd

Sophisticated office bonding

In an increasingly competitive marketplace, an office has gone

beyond being a workplace to become the embodiment of a corporation’s

ideals, branding and image. Many companies are willing to invest in a

work environment that is not only functional, practical and conducive to

productivity, but also one that demonstrates their prestige and sophistication.

Contemporary design concepts usually incorporate spaciousness and

minimalist finishes, an essential component of which is aesthetically pleasing

yet functional.

Recognising this need, tesa tape has created a new category of products

that is technologically refined—tesa ACXplus. This is a series of double-sided

adhesive tapes that consists of a high-performance acrylic system designed

to provide better performance and overcome the weaknesses of most

conventional fastening methods such as silicone and liquid glue.

Key benefits of tesa ACXplus

• Instant bonding: No drying process required, allowing for an efficient

production as well as faster processing and storage.

• Clean production: Helps retain a healthy working environment with no

unpleasant smells and a hygienic production site.

• Optimal aesthetics: No squeezing at bonding areas allows for less

rework and more streamlined, cleaner finishes.

• Higher accuracy: Provides constant thickness in the bonding areas for

a more precise, stable production process and better quality outcomes.

• UV and chemical-resistant: Ideal for mounting transparent materials

with invisible bonding, and excellent resistance ensures that it does

not turn yellow over time.

• Fuss-free application: No application tools are needed, thus providing

better convenience and reducing investment costs.

A clear advantage

tesa ACXplus solutions are available for various applications, including

glass-to-glass, glass-in-frame, and glass-to-metal. Glass-to-glass bonding

is usually used for office partition walls to prevent panels from drifting apart

and to achieve an ‘invisible’ modern appearance. For this purpose, the ultra-

transparent tesa ACXplus 7056 and 7058 tapes as well as the 7076 and 7078

dark black tapes are recommended.

Conceived with slim glass-to-glass applications in mind, they provide

immediate bonding on glass, with excellent resistance against UV,

temperature, humidity and chemical to provide a reliable and durable bond

for decades. These viscoelastic properties also compensate well for uneven

surfaces while allowing for invisible joints, giving them the ability to provide a

tight seal, mitigating noise and odour transfer.

In addition, tesa solutions provide superior edge-to-edge bonding for a

seamless, continuous look. They can also be used for corner attachments,

where they bond panels with a 45-degree angle for an optically clear corner.

Furthermore, they also work well for T-Block attachments, which are primarily

used to bond room dividers.

Framing it right

tesa tape has also designed specialised products for glass-in-frame and

H-profile applications. Using the tesa ACXplus 7055 or tesa ACXplus 7074 tapes,

glass or laminated wood can be bonded onto profile or frame materials such

as plastic and aluminium.

The high-strength bonding effect allows for a quick and easy construction

of partition walls with an optimal, elegant look, while the stable bond keeps

the glass in place. Aside from excellent temperature and ageing resistance,

Page 7: technologies@18 · technologies@18 Technologies have been increasingly adopted to drive productivity and efficiencies at all stages of the construction cycle. Energy-efficient and

3

technologies@18

the tapes also come with a viscoelastic core that compensates for the thermal

elongation of bonded parts. As an added assurance, this range of products

is certified and tested by TUV Rheinland, ift Rosenheim, MPA Stuttgart and

CSTB in France.

Similarly, for creating slim and nearly invisible H-Profiles between glass

panels, the transparent tesa ACXplus 7054 is recommended for an easy

adjustment of tolerances, with the viscoelastic tape compensating for

unevenness in the bonded materials. This solution also provides good noise

dampening effects.

Flushed with potential

With tesa solutions, users can achieve ‘flushed’ designs where surfaces

of different materials are aligned in a particular direction, leading to more

sophisticated, cleaner finishes. Highly versatile acrylic foam tapes such as

the tesa ACXplus 704 (white/grey) and 707 (black) help provide immediate

bonding to glass, aluminium and even powder-coated surfaces.

high-quality products to customers across a spectrum of industries such

as appliances; automotive; aviation; building supply; copiers and printers;

electronics; and marine, with an active presence in Southeast Asia. As an

innovation-driven company, tesa tape is constantly developing new solutions

in response to current market trends, the latest of which includes establishing

itself as a key player in the Office Partition Solutions industry.

As a pioneer in the adhesive tapes industry, tesa tape hopes to continue

building on its heritage of quality and excellence in order to provide even

more versatile, cost-effective and relevant solutions.

Designed to keep glass panels in place, this strong bonding effect makes

achieving a ‘flushed’ design easier without the need for optical tape coverage

or additional masking processes. This is further enhanced with the availability

of a variety of tape colours that help to camouflage and blend in with the

frames, while the additional use of the proprietary tesa Teflon edge taper and

corner cut ruler allow for a bubble-free application on glass as well as a clean

finish at corners.

About the company

tesa tape, part of the Beiersdorf group based in Germany, strives to

build strong bonds with customers. The company is a global manufacturer

of pressure-sensitive tape solutions that focuses on helping businesses

and industries discover the most effective adhesive solutions to improve

their processes, creating a diverse range of products for specific industrial

applications. Regionally headquartered in Singapore, tesa tape delivers

Window treatments that facilitate comfort and savings

Blinds & curtains: Nicedrape Solar Protection System Co Ltd

technologies@18

Window treatment does not only serve a decorative purpose, but also

controls glare, natural light and heat penetration. The openness of the fabric

regulates the transparency of the blind, which also facilitates different levels of

landscape visibility.

Nicedrape offers both window treatment products and one-stop

shading system solutions, from blind system design and styling proposal

to site evaluation, flexible system fabrication, installation and project

management. The shading system solutions stand out among Nicedrape’s

selection of products. All types of motorised blinds can be operated through

preprogrammed settings in different zones at various locations, according to

customers’ requirements. Users can regulate their own environment by setting

their preferred light ambience.

Maintaining views while reducing glare and heat

The Silverscreen 3805 Fabric is a distinctive, ultra-fine metallised backing

fabric with three major benefits: glare control, heat control and maintaining

views of the outdoors.

• Glare control: The contrast level of illumination and light between the

window and interior lighting is lowered, reducing occupants’ eyestrain

and disability glare—the degradation of visual performance due to the

presence of a bright light source.

• Heat control: The distinct aluminium packing on the back of the fabric

reflects solar radiation, hence reducing interior heat gain caused by

direct sunlight. This also lessens the cooling load and the amount of

ozone-depleting substances released into the atmosphere.

• View of the outdoors: Maintaining a good view is important for occupant

well-being and increasing productivity. Silverscreen 3805 is semi-

transparent and capable of reducing diffused light while maintaining

views for occupants.

About the company

With a wide range of projects under its belt—from hotel and commercial

to residential and clubhouse, etc.—Nicedrape has led the window treatment

industry with 40 years of experience in enhancing shading systems. The

company offers a comprehensive line of window treatment products that meet

the needs of today’s discerning designers and end-users. Its professional

shading control systems are durable, intelligent, multifunctional and

environmentally friendly—the vital elements in enhancing interiors.

A façade plays an important role in the aesthetic quality of a building in its

integration with the surroundings.

Fibre-cement façade materials

EQUITONE’s façade material is designed by and for architects. Every

panel is distinctive, showing the raw, untreated texture of the fibre-cement

base material. Produced under the name ETERNIT, these façade panels

assure crisp details.

Design potential

EQUITONE’s façade material offers design flexibility. The fibre-cement

material is through-coloured, allowing a display of the inner texture and colour

of the core material. It comes in a maximum panel size of 1.25 by 3 metres,

and can be transformed to any size or shape in the workshop or on-site.

The material can be perforated using waterjets or computer numerical control

(CNC) machines, and can also be embossed, engraved or printed. Designers

have also used it for interiors or furniture.

EQUITONE

Three different ranges are available for the product. The Lines range

offers a 3D-shaped through-coloured façade material that plays with light and

shadow to display a linear texture; every changing angle of sunlight lends the

façade material a different aspect. This highlights the raw inner texture of the

core fibre-cement material. A through-coloured façade material is available

for both the Natura and Tectiva ranges. In addition, the Natura range has a

fully transparent coating while the Tectiva range is characterised by a sanded

surface and naturally occurring hues within the material.

offers views in 3D—it is possible to place any mullion or transom and select a

variety of colours for an ideal rendering. Commercial and technical information

will also be attached to each object to enrich the 3D drawing.

Once the project has been modelled, architects can easily export to other

3D or BIM applications with DWG, IFC or SKETCHUP formats. In addition,

a specific plug-in that is embedded in the application has been developed

for those using REVIT from Autodesk or ARCHICAD. The objects produced

in Tech3D® can be exported to TECHDESIGN (the quotation and fabrication

software used by Technal fabricators). This direct integration enables users to

reduce errors in the parameter input and obtain an estimation of the project;

the time saved in redesigning the construction will speed up feedback.

About the company

The Technal brand is part of Hydro, a world-leading Norwegian extrusion

company. The company has around 35,000 employees that are involved in

activities in more than 40 countries in all continents. The group is a global

integrated aluminium company with production, sales and trading activities

throughout the value chain, from bauxite, alumina and energy generation to

the production of primary aluminium, rolled products, extruded products as

effective solutions to the most complex architectural issues.

A wide range of solutions for every design

Technal offers a wide variety of different solutions to create a dialogue

between the interior and the exterior of buildings and to design façades that

revolve around large glazed surfaces for all markets from construction and

residential to new buildings and renovations. Curtain walling, windows and

doors are available in many different versions and thus offer appropriate

solutions to the different needs expressed by the industry’s professionals.

The company also offers more specific products in order to meet all the

requirements: conservatories; balustrades; internal partitions; security doors;

fire protections systems; bullet- and burglar-proof products; shutters; solar

protection; and more.

Technal solutions are adapted to each country and its specific regulations,

enabling them to provide innovative products with quality levels that meet, and

often exceed, the demands of local requirements.

Innovative visualisation tools for architects

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is an intelligent 3D model-based

process that gives architectural professionals the opportunity to plan, design,

construct and manage buildings more efficiently. Its aim is to manage a

building’s life cycle—from initial design through to operation, maintenance,

dismantling and recycling. After consultations with leading architects, Technal

has developed the Tech3D software to fulfil these expectations.

With this software, architects are able to create windows, sliders, folding

doors, façades, etc., at the design stage of their projects. The application

Unitised roofing involves pre-fabricating roof panels at ground level and

then carrying them to the roof using lifting systems where they are then fixed to

the structure. This solution can be applied to structures with large-scale roofs,

for example, stadiums, airports and commercial buildings. Historically, roofing

has been installed in situ, meaning that all roofing materials are delivered

piecemeal to the site and then hoisted to the roof, where around 100 workers

install the materials piece by piece.

Benefits in designing and developing a unitised solution

1. Safety risk mitigation

2. Improved quality

3. Reducing the risk of programme delays

Using a unitised roof methodology mitigates safety risks by keeping most

of the workers at ground level. The bulk of the handling of materials, placement,

fixing and fabrication of the roof takes place on the ground and only a handful

of workers are required to work at heights. These skilled workers utilise bolt

connections to fix the unitised panels into place.

The pre-fabrication of the roof units at ground level also helps to improve the

overall quality of the roof finishes since workers are concentrated at one place.

Work tasks are hence easily allocated and supervised, and the movement and

adjustment of large, and often heavy materials, are made simpler. Inspections

and sign-offs can be carried out directly after fabrication on the ground, instead

of at dangerous heights on rooftops.

Craft Holdings Ltd has also found that unitising roofing accelerates

the overall installation process since the production of the roof units can

commence ahead of the steel construction. During the erection of the steel,

roof units can be easily stockpiled at ground level and can be ready as soon as

the structure is formed. In addition, fabrication can continue without disruption

during inclement weather by using suitable overcover.

The terracotta building material is in high demand worldwide. Manufactured

from 100-percent natural raw materials, terracotta components are low-

maintenance, durable, weatherproof and almost completely recyclable.

The terracotta façade system is developed and engineered by

Niederrheinische Baukeramik (NBK) based on the rainscreen principle; it is

a customised ventilated curtain wall. Besides offering resistance to ultraviolet

rays, frost and chemicals, this system also has the ability to accommodate

detailed designs in terms of shape, colour, texture and glaze for tailored

solutions. The NBK Architectural Terracotta comprises mainly six product

lines: Terracotta-Large; Terracotta-Mid; Terracotta-Light; Terracotta-Baguette;

Terracotta-Solid; and Terracotta-Shingle. The company’s expertise in complex

mixing techniques and traditional firing methods allows most colour and surface

texture specifications to be met for an exclusive assortment of products for

distinctive façades.

Terracotta rainscreen system

NBK’s terracotta façade system has vertical joints that are backed by a

support system that drains rainwater from the cavities behind. The tile design

allows for air to flow through these openings, which helps to balance the air

pressure in the cavities behind the terracotta panels with that of the outside

air, and also inhibits the build-up of hot air. The gaskets, together with the

balanced air pressure, prevent water from entering the wall cavities. Rainwater

will not enter the cavities due to the overlapping joints and a lack of differential

pressure. Water is moved away from building envelopes with a pressure-

equalised system to keep the building dry, which saves energy and reduces

maintenance costs.

In the project 65 Lloyd Road in Singapore (as shown above), the Terracotta-

tiles system was used as part of the building façade. This system offers the

following properties:

Push, Turn, Shower

The GROHE SmartControl offers intuitive push-and-turn buttons for ideal

water control. This line of smart shower controls will become more multifaceted

with new models and combination options being added, which feature a

greater variety of design options for any bathroom décor. The expanded range

will include the stylish on-the-wall model as well as a model for concealed

behind-the-wall installation.

Greater flexibility in bathroom designs

GROHE has developed two new versions of the modern shower system.

The first version combines the key benefits of concealed and exposed shower

systems: the water pipe is neatly concealed in the wall but the shower control

unit remains exposed, doubling as a convenient shelf for shower accessories.

The second version, SmartControl Concealed, has a minimalist design with the

same push-and-turn buttons. Both versions are available in square and round

designs. The shower faces on the head showers as well as the concealed

fittings are now available in a chrome or contemporary white finish.

A tankless shower with Aqua Ceramic technology

Faucets, taps & showerheads: Grohe Hong Kong Ltd

technologies@18

As it celebrates its 50th anniversary, INAX is launching its latest fifth-

generation tankless shower toilet: SATIS (S type). Re-engineered to transform

restrooms into more comfortable spaces for users through significant

improvements in both functions and design, this product incorporates

numerous innovative technologies to ensure a sustained cleanliness and an

improved overall user experience.

Aqua Ceramic

Aqua Ceramic, a new technology in sanitary ware developed by INAX to

resist stains, is the first in the world to address the four main issues relating to

cleanliness in toilets—scratch marks, marks from waste, water stains and the

build-up of bacteria. With the distinctive ceramic surface of the SATIS S, this

technology offers a superhydrophilicity performance that allows rinse water to

penetrate beneath any waste that may have attached to the ceramic, flushing

it away to ensure a complete removal.

Triple Vortex flushing system

Water stains are formed when silica in the rinse water interacts with hydroxyl

groups (OH-) on the ceramic’s surface on regular sanitary ware. With the Aqua

Ceramic technology that utilises a structure without exposed hydroxyl groups,

the surface of SATIS S is kept clean and smooth easily. It also features the

Triple Vortex flushing system, which ejects powerful water streams from three

water outlets (two from the top and one from the bottom)—an industry first—to

clean the toilet bowl, while the bowl-top edge effectively controls water flow.

This results in the full removal of all waste with less water.

Preventing odours

SATIS S has an Air Shield Deodorizer function that adopts the air-curtain

technology that uses air flow. Unlike typical deodorisation methods that rely

only on air suction, this new technology is designed to blow air into the bowl

for circulation, while odours in the rising air flow will be detected by a sensor

and absorbed. As a result, about 43 per cent of odours from the toilet can be

prevented, compared to conventional ones. In addition to the well-regarded

Plasmacluster function that sanitises the bowl’s interior by spreading sterilising

plasmacluster ions in every corner of the bowl (including the nozzle area where

exposure to water is limited), SATIS S has also adopted a Room Refresh

function that automatically lifts the lid at a preset time to deodorise air (with

plasmacluster technology) in the bathroom.

Advanced posterior cleansing technology

SATIS S also includes the technology that is able to cleanse the posterior

with a sufficient amount of water, even in the mild shower mode. The spray can

be switched between the strong and mild modes by controlling the volume and

speed of water ejected from the nozzle, resulting in a comfortable experience.

With basic, regular care, the SATIS S can retain its lustre for about 100

years, considerably reducing the amount of water and chemicals needed for

cleaning. This technology has won the Gold award in Japan’s Good Design

Award programme in 2016, out of over 4,000 entries submitted to a panel of

76 international jury members.

Customisable security barriers

Fencing, gates & exterior: The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC)

technologies@18

The Australian Trellis Door Company (ATDC) has recently supplied

its distinctive security grilles to eight tenancies at the Heritage Zone of

Singapore Changi Airport’s newest terminal, Terminal 4 (T4), a transit area

that gives passengers a glimpse of shophouses from the 1880s to the 1950s.

ATDC installed security grilles that complemented the traditional façade of

shophouses that were built before World War II, where retail shops were on

the ground level whilst residential units were on the second and third storeys.

A further requirement was that the security grilles have to occupy as minimal

storage space as physically possible when unlocked and opened.

Mechanisms

ATDC’s S07-2 side-by-side retractable security grilles are amongst the

most space-efficient commercial door system that is currently available on

the global market. The security grilles can be customised and fabricated to

specific dimensions before they are attached to structural support frames. By

installing the top tracks in a parallel tandem configuration, the security grilles

occupy only 8 per cent of daylight opening spans. Furthermore, through

the use of its seamless up/down locking mechanisms, the grilles provide

considerably wide spans without the need for cumbersome removeable

mullions and floor tracking. The locking mechanisms on the grilles can be

programmed to a specific master key system.

Finish

A special precious silver pearl powder coating is applied to blend in with

the general theme of the Heritage Zone. Standard ATDC stock finishes include

pearl white or satin black, although any Dulux powder coating finishes can be

used to customise different concepts.

About the company

Having commenced operations in Australia and New Zealand in 1984,

ATDC now supplies its quality range of barrier security products across

Southeast Asia, Asia Pacific region, the Pacific Islands and the United Arab

Emirates (UAE). The range includes trellis security doors, trackless portable

barriers, commercial folding doors, overhead doors and security plantation

shutters. Clients can collaborate with experienced ADTC project managers

through all stages of the construction process and receive custom-made

quality security products at competitive prices, innovative ideas and solutions,

as well as an uncompromising service. Please contact ATDC for your closest

Passive fire protection – an integral part of construction plans

Fire seals & firestopping systems: Reddiplex Asia Limited

technologies@18

The term passive fire protection is used to define various systems that can

help to compartmentalise a building into smaller sections with the use of floors

and walls. These systems, as part of the building’s construction, require no

action should a fire break out. They will be activated automatically; the fire will

be contained in a compartment, preventing it from spreading to the rest of the

building for the time being.

Passive fire protection should be a core consideration for parties that are

involved in construction projects and a fundamental part of any fire safety

strategy. Specifiers and construction companies utilise a wide range of fire

seals and firestopping products to fill and seal cavities in a building’s walls and

floors during construction. In the event of a fire, this will prevent fire and smoke

from passing through any gaps, thus containing the damage.

Third-party certification

There are a number of recognised independent third-party certification

schemes available in the industry, covering a wide range of fire seals and

firestopping products. These schemes assure performance, quality, reliability

and traceability of fire protection products, providing confidence with regard to

the stated performance of the product and offering an informed choice when

purchasing or selecting such components.

Key categories of passive fire protection products

The selection of the product is a critical process to ensure that it can

achieve the required level of fire resistance. When specifying seals, it is often

necessary to ensure that the proposed system is capable of accommodating

the varying service sizes and combinations. The ability of any particular sealing

system to maintain the performance of a separating element is also dependent

upon the material composition, geometry and thermal behaviour of the element

being used.

About the company

Pyroplex is a leading UK manufacturer of fire seals and firestopping

products. All Pyroplex fire containment products have been manufactured

to the highest possible specifications and have been tested to BS and EN

standards, holding PSB approval where relevant. Based in Hong Kong,

Reddiplex Asia is part of the Reddiplex Group of Companies, distributing

the Pyroplex brand of fire door seals, glazing seals and penetration sealing

systems throughout Singapore; Malaysia; Thailand; Brunei; Indonesia; Taiwan;

Japan; Vietnam; Cambodia; New Zealand; and Australia.

Sunjoule

With AGC’s extensive research and development innovations, the

company is able to combine the latest glass innovations with commercially

viable solar cells to offer Sunjoule, a versatile and revolutionary Building

Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) material.

It can be functionally and aesthetically integrated into buildings and

infrastructures, and is available in black single and bifacial mono-crystalline

cells; poly-crystalline cells in various colours; thin-stripe mono-crystalline

cells; as well as thin-film cells. Bifacial cells, encapsulated in between glass,

enable solar energy to be collected on both surfaces of the glass panel

when installed in open-vertical installations.

The positioning of the cells can be customised to meet the design needs

of architects and building owners. Glass thickness can also be tailored to

address the wind load requirements of different building façades. With

its versatility as a building material, Sunjoule allows multiple application

possibilities such as:

• Spandrel

• Skylight

• Canopy

• Curtain wall

• Window

In addition to generating solar energy, Sunjoule is able to act as a

shading device to provide a considerable reduction of shading coefficient

or solar factor of a façade, thus contributing to better energy efficiency

by reducing the loads on heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC)

systems.

USG Boral Vietnam announced its record for FY2017 (fiscal year) along

with its five-year development projections for the Vietnam market at its

annual Distributor Conference, which was held in Thailand on 8 July 2017.

In conjunction with the Shaping the Future Together concept, USG Boral’s

distributors were recognised as strategic partners, placed as key channels to

build up the strong network in nationwide distribution and develop construction

trends in the future.

One successful key factor is to become a pioneer in the development

and introduction of innovative solutions and high-performance products to

meet market’s expectations. ZolidWall and Durock Wall systems had been

introduced as innovative technologies that provide new trends in plasterboard

application as well as in construction architecture.

ZolidWall

Five times lighter and three times faster to install than general walls,

ZolidWall is more efficient in terms of acoustical performance, surpassing

conventional walls at soundproofing properties. This plasterboard solution

offers heavy hanging properties alongside fire and earthquake resistance

technologies, setting the bar for plasterboard pavilions.

Durock Wall System

This system provides a moisture- and mold-resistant cement board that

minimises damage from deterioration, warping or delamination when exposed

to adverse environment impacts. Architects, builders and tile contractors can

The invisible grille system

Invisible grills: INVISYS Technology Pte Ltd

technologies@18

INVISYS Technology introduces a new security system that not only

provides protection and security to users, but is also aesthetically pleasing.

The INVISIBLE GRILLE is a solution that has been specially designed to blend

into the modern living environment effortlessly. This system is mainly made up

of fine high-tension stainless-steel cables installed over window panels, which

is similar to traditional grilles, but almost invisible. Without compromising on

safety concerns, this offers better visibility as compared to traditional window

grilles.

The INVISIBLE GRILLE

The invisible grille system concept originated from Europe in the late 1990s.

The system underwent several rounds of modifications and improvements

through the years to arrive at the current design. The invisible grille system

has undergone a series of laboratory tests conducted by reputable institutes

to assure of its performance and reliability. It was sent to Setsco Services for

load testing on the system, and results showed that this system is able to hold

more than 200 kgf of point load.

Installation

The invisible grille system can be installed with two different orientations,

either vertically or horizontally. The wire gaps between each strand of cable

can be adjusted as desired, from 2 inches or more. A pair of specially extruded

aluminium frames is secured onto both sides of the wall. In every installation,

high quality and reliable HILTI brand anchor bolts are used, which ensures that

the frames are secured under several conditions. Due to the applied tension,

both sides of the wall have to be of a solid foundation, for example: solid

walls, brick walls or concrete walls, etc. Once the frames are well secured,

the cable is looped around the polyoxymethylene (POM), forming the invisible

grille formation.

The applied tension of the cable is at 35 kgf, allowing the ‘teeths’ within

the POM to tighten around the nylon jacket of the cable and provide the

extra grip. At the end of the cable, a stainless-steel turn buckle is used to

provide the final tension to the cable. After the invisible cables are in position,

a matching aluminium casing is placed over it, forming the finish look of the

invisible grille system.

The cable

• Diametre of 2 millimetre

• 1x12 combination offers strength and flexibility

• Made of 316 grade stainless steel that offers high resistance against rust

corrosion and superior tension performance

• Able to hold a load of more than 330 pounds (152 kilogrammes), as tested

by Setsco Services

• Protected with a layer of clear nylon membrane

The POM

• Known for its hardness and stability

• Commonly produced as gears, hinges, hardware, etc.

• Laboratory tests that were recently conducted on the POM by Setsco

Services showed that a pair of POM could hold more than 270 kgf of load

• Precise edges allow it to slide and rest perfectly on a specially

extruded aluminium profile, forming the main support of the invisible grille

system

Nowadays, businesses are confronted with a high operating cost and

a scarcity of space. It is not feasible for companies to constantly increase

operating space without affecting profitability, especially when it is not

guaranteed whether the additional space can be fully utilised to generate

better business returns.

Where flexible space management is concerned, Hufcor’s aluminium

5000R operable partition is an international popular choice for architects

and interior designers. It is designed with high-grade 6063-T6 architectural

aluminium frames, which offer a lightweight structure that is able to maintain

a strong internal structural strength. The slim 83-millimetre-nominal-thick

construction profile requires lesser storage area to maximise productive

space. The well-designed vertical and horizontal seal systems offer acoustic

performance of up to sound transmission class (STC) 51 and come with a

wide variety of finishes that range from vinyl wallpapers and laminates to

fabrics. There is also an aesthetical double-glazed option, which provides

a sense of spaciousness while retaining high acoustical privacy. The fine

craftsmanship, durability, ease of installation and a standard two-year

warranty make this product the preferred choice for hotels, convention

centres, commercial offices and restaurants.

Patented aluminium tract systems

Designed and developed by Hufcor in USA, the company’s tracks are

manufactured with a high-quality aluminium extrusion 6063-T6 alloy—

architectural anodised with a clear dye—that provides a positive alignment

and optimal sound control. The tracks are essential in providing integral

support for ceiling soffits and plenum sound barriers. This tract system

ensures that Hufcor partitions operate smoothly for years to come and

allows the panels to be easily assembled and stored. All Hufcor tracks have

been tested rigorously for a minimum of 100 miles (161 kilometres)—this

equates to a usage cycle of approximately 14 years. The company supplies

a wide variety of tracks that are designed to meet the various operating

requirements from customers.

Eco-Green manufacturing

Hufcor is committed in the progress towards an environmentally friendly

approach in manufacturing as it continues to develop internal standards

that support various efforts in achieving LEED certification. The company

reduces the use of adhesives where construction faces are adhered to their

frames—any necessary adhesives are low in volatile organic compounds

(VOC). This allows for a more efficient disassembly during material recovery

after a product’s life cycle. Repairs in the field are hence simple and do

not require demolition. Product shipments utilise reusable panel racks, thus

reducing installation waste. The company also sources for raw materials

locally, which reduces energy consumption in transportation. In addition,

glass walls are nearly 90 per cent recyclable. Job sites are closely monitored

and managed to reduce packaging waste.

Research has shown that fire protection in many buildings has been

incorrectly installed or are inadequate. It is vital that buildings are designed with

fire protection systems to reduce the risk of structural collapse. When exposed

to fire, common building materials lose their strength—concrete cracks and

spalls; wood burns and turns into char; and while steel does not burn, it loses

its strength at temperatures above 400 degrees Celsius. Modern designs often

involve steel expressed as an architectural feature—intumescent paint is often

the preferred choice for fire protection.

The Steelmaster 1200WF coating

This coating reacts to heat by swelling to many times its original thickness

in a controlled manner to produce a carbonaceous char, which acts as an

insulating layer to protect the steel structure.

• A smooth finish: Less product is required to coat structural steel for 120

minutes of fire protection

• Quicker project completion: Easy application promotes greater

efficiency and productivity

Steelmaster 1200WF is designed for performance with minimum

environmental impact. Complying with international Green standards, this

coating contains low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and is free of

hazardous air polluting substances, thereby maintaining a safe air quality.

An economic and effective solution for interior and exterior applications, it is

compatible with a range of Jotun primers and topcoats to suit each project’s

specifications. In addition, it is compliant with LEED certification and is safe for

multiple trades.

WeatherGard Plus+

Nippon Paint’s WeatherGard Plus+ is a premium exterior paint that

possesses prominent features invented by Japanese advanced technology.

This exterior paint offers excellent protection as well as a long-lasting and

aesthetically pleasing finish for homes.

How do the technologies work?

1. WeatherGard Plus+ is formulated with the new micro gel latex. Once the

paint is applied on the substrate, the micro gel nano particles will migrate

up to the surface together with cross-linking additives.

2. Upon exposure to ultraviolet light, it will undergo 3D cross-linking and form

a durable film.

With such a layer, the WeatherGard Plus+ exterior paint will be resistant

to fading and chalking, keeping façades looking fresh and offering lasting

aesthetical values. Its outstanding features include low dirt accumulation,

keeping houses from having streaks caused by polluted air. In addition, the

micro gel technology offers excellent waterproofing and covers hairline cracks.

Odour-less Spot-less

Nippon Paint’s Odour-less Spot-less premium interior emulsion is a

specially formulated acrylic emulsion paint that repels household stains such

as beverages, inks, handprints, etc. The lotus effect technology makes it highly

resistant to the penetration of waterborne stains, causing them to form beads.

This beading effect ensures that stains do not stick and can be removed easily

without damaging the paint. Nippon Paint Odour-less Spot-less is a high-

quality paint that is suitable for bedrooms, hallways, living and dining rooms.

Konstrukt Permaplast K-201 is a specially formulated bonding paste that

is mixed with cement and applied on interior and exterior concrete substrates

to correct surface imperfections prior to painting. It dries to a smooth cement

finish and repairs bubbles, honeycomb and concrete defects such as uneven

surfaces that are 2 to 3 millimetres thick.

Users can place K-201 in a suitable container and mix it with sifted

cement at a 1:1 ratio by weight or by volume until a lump-free, homogenous

paste is achieved. No water is required. Portland cement can be used for an

ordinary cement colour or white cement to produce a white finish.

Using a steel trowel, a thin layer of mixture can be applied on the surface

by firmly pressing the edge of the trowel on the concrete until all areas are

covered. Before applying the second coat, let it dry for at least one hour. If

trowel marks are visible, let the surface dry for at least another hour before

sanding to further smoothen surfaces. Users should allow at least seven days

before painting. There is no need to neutralise.

Professional surface preparation

A correct and thorough surface preparation is the most important factor

affecting the success of surface treatment. Konstrukt provides chemical

systems that offer solutions to prepare for different surfaces like floors,

walls and ceilings. The chemical solutions are combined with traditional

construction materials to enhance the performance of the materials, correct

imperfections, and give them properties that the surfaces require.

Ease of use

As cities grow rapidly, land use also increases. As such, high-rise

buildings are the solutions to land limitation. When designing high-rise

buildings, using a light material is more economical as it reduces the use

of concrete. A drywall system is the recommended solution—brick walls

are four times the weight of a drywall, producing a seismic load 4 times

compared to drywall.

Drywall

Drywall is the dividing wall of an existing room. It consists of light

steel in the metal section and the plasterboard as the cover frame. Knauf

has several partition systems that have different performances and cater

to required specifications. They are W112.id Standard Partition System,

W114.id Staggered Stud Partition and W115id Twin Frame System.

Advantages of using drywall

Drywall has several advantages over the conventional brick wall or

autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC).

• Lighter: In terms of weight, the brick wall and the AAC (both without

finishing) are 1.5 and four times heavier than the drywall respectively.

• Faster: Drywall installation process is fast and easy. There is no need

to wait for the plaster to dry.

• Dry construction: Its construction does not require a lot of water.

Therefore, the installation process is cleaner compared to the process

of installing conventional brick walls.

• Better sound reduction: The conventional brick wall (with a thickness

of 150 millimetres) can reduce sound up to 43 decibel (dB), while AAC

(with a thickness of 100 millimetres) can reduce sound up to 50 dB.

By using drywall, the sound reduction is up to 62 dB.

• Flexibility: Plasterboard is easily constructed, so the drywall can

accommodate the needs of a curved wall.

• Finishing quality: Drywall provides a flatter finishing as compared to

the conventional brick wall.

About the company

Founded in 1932, Knauf is a family business by brothers Karl & Dr Alfons

N. Knauf. From its early gypsum processing, the company has expanded and

diversified to become an active global firm that delivers products and services

to over 60 countries, including Indonesia. PT Knauf Gypsum Indonesia started

in Indonesia in 2003, with manufacturing plants in Cikampek and Gresik, and

a training center at Cikampek. The brand continues to work and provide

the best solutions to customers and becoming one of the market leaders in

Indonesia for high-quality plasterboards.

There is now a high demand to remodel homes quickly, efficiently

and as creatively as the customer wishes. A house is a personal place of

expression. However, each occupant has an individual preference, not to

mention the limitation in space that becomes a challenge in realising the

ideal decoration. For example, changing the wall’s decoration can become

difficult and impractical if brick or block walls are used.

Proper building solutions can be utilised to overcome this issue:

1) Determine the theme that the customer wishes to apply. 2) Categorise

the type of furniture that will be on display. 3) Choose building materials that

provide more storage spaces and flexibility.

Currently, the gypsum board is a building material solution that allows

users to remodel the house as they wish. It is a popular choice for the

modern society. Gypsum walls are much lighter than conventional ones,

making it easier to move and install. This saves time and cost, since users

do not need to rebuild the wall. Hence, gypsum walls are also safer and

more efficient for occupants.

technologies@18

Named the Jungle of Giants, this playground is a redevelopment project

between Play Concept and Ocean Park. It is one of the most frequently visited

theme parks in Hong Kong and Asia with over 7.7 million guests a year.

Ocean Park wanted a complete makeover of its children’s play area to bring

the theme of the playground in line with its effort to increase environmental

awareness.

The playground’s verisimilar design has gained popularity with children

and parents. The tailor-made equipment has been manufactured with precise

details to resemble tree trunks and offers children the opportunity to climb

and crawl, as though they are venturing through a real jungle. To enhance the

imaginative space, children can also play with giant structures of an ant and a

bee, as well as a spider and its web. In addition, Ocean Park’s explorer mascots

are in different parts of the playground to further enliven the surroundings.

Apart from its own safety inspectors, Play Concept has also invited TÜV,

a third-party testing, certification and inspection organisation, to inspect and

certify that the Jungle of Giants meets the international safety standard for

playgrounds.

Most modern houses have a low pitch roof design, commonly known as flat

roof, and is regarded as contemporary, stylish and minimalist. The new Monier

Horizon 8 roof system offers the complete solution for this model, delivering the

lowest pitch level in the market at only 8 degrees. This means that roof shapes

for houses can be more flexible and go lower or flatter. Concrete roof tiles for

modern house are aesthetically pleasing and are known for their durability, high

heat reflectivity and excellent noise reduction quality. All these attributes ensure

that occupants enjoy a more comfortable and environmentally friendly space.

Contemporary style

The Monier Horizon 8 roof tiles are modern and highly functional. This roof

system offers numerous designs at a competitive price. There are three colours

to choose from: black, brown and grey. To complement the different types of

roof designs, the angular fitting series includes Angular Ridge, Angular Ridge

End, Verge, Monoridge, and Monoridge End. High-quality surface material is

used to maintain the colour stability and consistency even after an extended

period of time.

Leakproof

The roof system is durable and leakproof. The concrete gets harder and

stronger over time by absorbing carbon dioxide, and hence has an increased

lifespan. The roof tiles are able to prevent fungal and algal growth on the

surfaces and are not easily damaged.

Noise reduction

The natural properties of concrete tiles deliver outstanding acoustic

performance for a quiet indoor environment. The mass of the tile body and

the batten system absorb sound waves, providing excellent noise insulation.

Superior heat reflection

Monier Horizon 8 roof system reflects heat and has high residual heat

dissipation to ensure a cooler and more comfortable indoor environment. The

surface materials of the roof tiles come with a passive heat removal design that

releases excess heat through self-ventilation.

Excellent geometric accuracy

To achieve high geometric accuracy, each tile is placed in individual

support during drying, followed by individual refractory H-cassette. This

method prevents distortion, ensuring dimensional accuracy and consistency.

The profile design is moulded from the H-cassette technology, which produces

good-quality surfaces with high-end finishing.

High water resistance

Tiles with precise and sharp contours can be formed with the high firing

temperatures in individual refractory H-support and Monier’s distinctive gypsum

moulds. The dimensional stability of each tile makes it an excellent fit, which

contributes to high watertightness for additional leakage prevention. Toscana

Warisan is designed with double interlocking system positions above the water

channel of the tiles, ensuring superb water resistance in tropical weather.

Superior tile strength and surface coating durability

Each Toscana Warisan tile is fired at high temperatures of more than 1,000

degrees Celsius. This ensures the compactness of the tiles, with tile strength

that surpasses the criteria specified by international standards. This high-firing

process also creates a better fusion of the surface coating for long-lasting

durability.

The latest in water technologies

Water heating systems: Bestank Manufacturing Corporation

technologies@18

Bestank Manufacturing Corporation has been in the forefront of bringing

the latest in water storage, pressurisation, heating and filtration solutions in

the Philippines.

Modular storage tank system

Launched a few years ago, the company introduced the modular storage

tank system, one where 304 stainless steel panels are linked together to

conform to individual design and capacity. It uses only stainless steel welded

panels, internal partitions, stays, cleats and pads. All tanks from Bestank are

manufactured to ASTMA (AISI) Grade 304 and American Iron & Steel Institute

(AISI) Grade 304 standards.

The Bestank Modular Storage Tank can be assembled on- or off-site.

With the panelised design, the system can be installed unit per unit in any

imaginable space, such as in basements, high-rise buildings or a remote farm.

Commercial hot water systems

The company has also started providing commercial hot water systems

by Thermatrac. Manufactured by Rheem, a US manufacturing firm that has

been operating since the mid 1920s, it has multiple plants across the US,

Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, South America and Southeast Asia.

A simple and efficient system, a fan draws in hot ambient air and is

absorbed by an eco-friendly HFC refrigerant (R417A). Going through the

compressor discharges hot pressurised vapour, which in turn is transferred

to the water via a tube-in-tube heat exchanger with a stainless steel flat plate.

This makes it ideal for potable water heating. The cold air is expelled as a by-

product of the system, which can be redirected to serve as air-conditioning,

offering as much as 70 per cent in efficiency and energy savings.

Rated with a C.O.P. of 4, which is the highest in its class, the system is

compliant with the US standard for heating (AS/NZS 2712:2007, solar and

heat pump water heaters, design and construction). Running at 60 hertz, the

Thermatrac Heat Pump is specifically designed for the Asian market. It has

a rated input power of 10.3 kilowatts, resulting in a heating capacity of 45

kilowatts.

A revolution is taking place in new building technology around the world.

The Green building industry has rapidly grown in recent years, along with

increasing demand for environmentally responsible and healthy places to work

and live in.

As the market leader in waterborne finishes, Bona’s aim is to develop

environmentally sound products of the highest quality in order to bring out the

best in wooden floors. Through continued research, the company develops

wooden floor treatments that focus on design and performance. With the

belief that a good design solution is not just about appearance but also about

functionality, Bona takes into account factors such as durability, gloss, shade,

friction and slip resistance when coming up with its coatings.

Sustainable solutions for wooden floors

Wood flooring solutions: Bona Far East & Pacific Pte Ltd

technologies@18

Waterborne finishes

Bona’s waterborne finishes are durable, fast drying, clear in colour, almost

odourless, and most importantly, environmentally adapted. As the finish dries,

water evaporates into the air, leaving the protective polyurethane coating on

the wood. This means low volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and no

toxic fumes, minimising the health risk to contractors and homeowners.

In 2007, Bona received the Singapore Green Label for the waterborne

finishes Bona Prime Classic, Bona Novia, Bona Mega, Bona Traffic and Bona

Naturale as well as for the Bona wooden floor cleaners.

Silane-based adhesive

Bona’s innovative silane-based reactive adhesives can be used for all

types of wooden floors. They are also especially suitable for sensitive wooden

floors as they do not contain water or organic solvents. In 2009, Bona received

the Singapore Green Label for Bona R848 and R850 silane-based adhesives.

Dust-free sanding

It is also important to consider the effects of products on indoor air quality.

Sanding wooden floors has always been associated with lots of dust. Bona’s

patented technology to vacuum up wood dust during floor sanding has been

developed to meet high health and environmental standards. Measurements

show that Bona’s dust-free sanders contribute to better and cleaner air quality.

Pioneer

Bona pioneered waterborne floor finishing technologies in the 1970s. The

company has a tradition of commitment to personal health, indoor air quality

and the environment, and has led the development of lowering VOCs in finishes,

while maintaining industry-leading performance standards. Bona’s innovations

over the years have resulted in the highest quality and most environmentally

responsible floor finishing processes. With a complete system of products

for installation, maintenance and renovation of wooden floors, Bona offers its

customers lifetime support.
