Need of ICT

• ICT removes problems concerning space and time– the students can communicate any where, any time– the students can contact the teacher any where, any time– the students can collect and exchange information any

where, any time

• ICT gives access to knowledge– in principle the students can draw on a global pool of

knowledge

• ICT makes saving – and sharing – knowledge easier– the students can, individually and/or together create

records of notes and presentations (portfolio) and thus register their progress and use it for exams

Page 21: Technology in Education

How Technology is changing today’s classrooms• Shifting of instructional

paradigm: – Focus of application of

knowledge to particular

problem rather than memorization

• Increased greater number of interdisciplinary majors

• Increased Inter-university collaboration among students/faculties from multiple institutions

21

Page 22: Technology in Education

Technology Integration

• Tools• Interactive whiteboards• Student response system• Online collaboration tools• Video conferencing• Sophisticated learning-

management systems • Podcasting• Wikis • Instant messaging • social networking• Search engine

22

Page 23: Technology in Education

What are the tools used by student and teachers?

• Students– Search Engine– Office tools– E-mail

• Teacher– Search Engine– Video Tutorial– E-mail – MIS – Office Tools

23

Page 24: Technology in Education

How student and teacher updates their technological knowledge?

• Students– Overusing and Misusing (Music ,

video, hacking

/cracking) – Networking (Social

networking, Chat)

• Teachers– Need base and individual directed– Specific training

24

Page 25: Technology in Education

What are the barriers that preventing the student and teacher from adopting technology?

• Cost• Lack of vision or plan• Inflexible Thinking By

– Teachers– Parents– College boards

• Lack of teacher training• Entrenched organizational cultures• Technology – affordance rather than

demands of subject matter

25

Page 26: Technology in Education

5. Support system

• Academic Institutions– Involvement of teachers in different activities– Need for both in-service and pre-service

teacher training– Teacher preparation should not be based on

training for ‘computer literacy’ but should prepare teachers for using technologies to construct, represent and share knowledge in real life authentic contexts

– Teachers should not be taught about technology but how to use technology for constructing, organizing and communicating knowledge

26

Page 27: Technology in Education

Conclusion

• Continuing old practices

with new technology will

neither change nor

improve education• Technology drives reform in

education, but also education reform makes a school ripe for technology
