At the OAA conference I had the pleasure for the second time to meet with OAAAS members attending the Admission Course. The theme of my presentation was "Licensed Technologist OAA as a Professional". I presented on our responsibilities as design professionals and on how the OAA Council Policy affects "real-life" practice. I look forward to this session as it allows me the opportunity to engage directly with current OAAAS technologists and to learn more about their backgrounds and professional aspirations. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTI'm honoured to have been elected to serve as the OAAAS president for another term and I would like to welcome our new board members, those re-elected and those continuing their current terms. I'm looking forward to a productive and engaging year. Bringing new people on to the board allows for an exchange of new ideas and generally brings a renewed enthusiasm for the association.

I'm anticipating another productive year: we're continuing the transition to our revised membership fees policy, reviewing the OAA Council Policy, proposing a revamped admission process, and exploring new marketing and partnership opportunities.

After the OAAAS student awards program, I had the pleasure of presenting OAAAS Honorary Membership No.1 to David Mills, a long-time member of our board and strong supporter of the OAAAS program. David received a diploma in architectural technology before moving on to become an architect. Thank you so much for your support and meaningful contributions, David!

Report from the Executive Director

OAAAS had a very successful OAA Conference. For the last two years, OAAAS has organized its Annual General Meeting and the meeting of the Founder to coincide with the Conference. At the meetings, welcomed two new members to the Board of Directors: John Romanov OAA, and Richard Labelle CET, who represents OACETT. These members join Licensed Technologists OAA Jeremiah Gammond, Jean Audette, Rick Mateljan and Chris Oke, who are the OAAAS members on the Board. Brian Luey and Anthony Sproul, who are members of the OAA Council, complete the Board.

Twenty six OAAAS members attended the Admission Course, a record number.

Once again the OAAAS Student Awards program was well received, by architects, technologists, other attendees, as well as the colleges and the students themselves. OAAAS is grateful for the support offered by the OAA and its President for this initiative. We thank our four sponsors: Brian Luey Architect, AECOM, the Toronto Society of Architects and the Ontario General Contractors Association. See page 3 for coverage on this years award winners.

For the first time, OAAAS sponsored a Continuing Education session at the Conference. Sarah Hall, an internationally recognized artist creating large-scale art glass installations and solar projects, presented two sessions on Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV). The sessions proved to be of interest both to architects and technologists. Click here to view the 2015 ConEd Sessions (Technologist OAAAS member login is required).

2015 CALENDAR HIGHLIGHTS

JAN - DEC

New membership invoicing system being implemented

On January 1, 2015, OAAAS adopted the OAA model of invoicing members for the calendar year, rather than using the member’s anniversary date. Harmonizing our invoicing with the OAA system reduces the challenge for members moving to OAA licensure.

- Members who joined in February through August, will receive a dues invoice pro-rated for the number of months remaining in 2015.

- Members who joined in September through October, will receive a pro-rated invoice for the remainder of 2015 and will also have the option of paying their dues for the 2016 calendar year.

- Members who joined in November through December, will receive an invoice for the one or two months remaining in 2015 as well as for the 2016 calendar year.

Do you want to pay your invoice on-line? Members now have the option of paying their annual member dues and other fees, via PayPal. To request a PayPal invoice contact our office: [email protected].

SEPT - OCT OAAAS will be visiting colleges throughout Ontario to promote the organization and the 2016 Student Awards Program to Architectural Technology students.

8 OAAAS NEWSLETTER ISSUE No. 2 JUNE 2015

Submission of your Work Experience Hours

Remember that you should submit your work experience hours approximately every 1000 hours. This rule does not apply for retroactive submissions.

If your goal is to attend the 2016 OAA Admission Course in Toronto, and you are currently an Associate OAAAS member, note that to be eligible to attend, your membership should be reclassified to Technologist OAAAS by November 1, 2015. Members must hold the Technologist OAAAS designation for a minimum of 6 months prior to attending the course. Contact our office to discuss your membership reclassification strategy.

We recommend that you review the following documents for further instruction and necessary template in the OAAAS Program Guide:

- Experience Requirement Chart (Page 10)- Instructions for Completion of the Experience Record Book (4.3, page 12)- Experience Area Description and Required Activities (Appendix B) which provides definitions of every category.

If you are new to this responsibility, do not worry, it is not as daunting as it may seem. Submitting your work experience hours involves keeping track and recording your newly accumulated work experience hours in the Experience Record Book (ERB). Record Books are periodically mailed in to the OAAAS Office every 1000 hours for validation and calculation. This rule does not apply to retroactive submissions. Once your hours have been calculated you will receive a Summary Report that highlights the specific hours that are still required to move to the next certification level. For further instruction and necessary documents visit: http://www.oaa.on.ca/the+oaa/allied+organizations/oaaas. See Experience Tab.

New Associate OAAAS members should take advantage of the limited time opportunity to submit retroactive work experience hours accumulated prior to joining OAAAS, as this can potentially give you a head start in reaching the Technologist OAAAS certification. This must be done within three months from the date you become an OAAAS member.

2014 - 2016 Continuing Education Cycle - July 1, 2014 - June 30, 2016

Members registered as Technologists OAAAS or Lic.Tech.OAA are reminded that they are required to complete specific continuing education activities for every two year Continuing Education Cycle. It is the responsibility of the member to record their activity hours on their ConEd Transcript. To access your transcript all you need is your Username and Password that were issued to you when you first became a member. To access your transcript visit: Transcripts.

Your specific continuing education activity hours are divided between Structured and Unstructured Learning. Review the following links to see what each type or learning activities count. Structured Unstructured Learning

Technologist OAAAS members must complete 15 hours of learning (minimum of five hours of Structured learning and 10 hours of Unstructured learning)
