PEV sales are strongly correlated with the availability of a

charging infrastructure network

Recent research estimates that by 2020 PEV sales will

reach 3 Million globally, with 900K in Japan. (Pike Research, 2013)

Currently over 49,000 charging stations globally. 94% of

these are AC and 5% are DC. (Pike Research, 2013)

Installation Concerns

• Sites with poor network signal – Chargers installed within underground parking garages may experience

communication problems

– If antennae cannot be extended far enough, the cellular router has to be installed

outside the parking garage in a NEMA 4 enclosure in order to access cellular

signals, running CAT5 or CAT6 ethernet cable back to the kiosk. The NEMA 4

enclosure would also need to include power for the router.

• Distance between the power unit and the kiosk in

retail urban locations – 65 ft. max with copper CANBus (RS485) communication wires

– Unlimited distance with fiber optic communication with an increase in equipment

and installation cost

• Average costs of installation – $12K - $20K for a normal installation.

– $25K - $40K if an isolation transformer is required to step up from 208 v, 3 ph

23

Page 24: Technology that moves the world · DCFC Charging Site Home / Community Super market, Mall, Grocery, Gym, Gas Station Major roads, Highways, Rest Areas, Gas Stations Normal DCFC

Electrical Infrastructure Concerns

3 phase 480 V availability

– 480V, 3 ph is not commonly

available in non industrial

/commercial areas in the USA.

– On sites where 480 V service

is not available, a step-up

transformer must be installed

to bring voltage up from 208 to

480.

24

Page 25: Technology that moves the world · DCFC Charging Site Home / Community Super market, Mall, Grocery, Gym, Gas Station Major roads, Highways, Rest Areas, Gas Stations Normal DCFC

Operating issues

– More education and information on how a DC

Fast Charger operates are needed.

Example:

• With the LEAF on DCFC, the battery only charges

up to 80% - 85% of its capacity. After reaching that

threshold, the charging session is automatically

shut off by the vehicle.

• With the Spark EV & BMW i3, the battery will

charge all the way to 100% on DCFC.

– Connectors operate differently than L2

(add / remove CS or satellite, etc.)

• Visual representation of CS on map

• Alarm management

• Control CS

(abort charges, reset, etc.)

• Energy and use monitoring

• Network performance indicators

– User Public Portal • CS location and availability

• Find CS on a trip route

• Reserve CS

• User/Card management

(customer association, activation, blocking, cancelation, etc.)

• Notification management

(news, end of charge, upcoming reservation, etc.)

• Reporting

(station usage, energy sold, etc.)
