Technology is the products and processes designed to serve our needs

The words science and technology can and often are used interchangeably. But the goal of science is the pursuit of knowledge for its own sake while the goal of technology is to create products that solve problems and improve human life. Simply put, technology is the practical application of science.

TECHNOLOGY IS A PART OF SCIENCE BUT HOW IS IT

DIFFERENT?• Technology

• Technology is doing

• The search for and theorizing about new processes.

• Activities always value-laden

• Analysis and synthesis of design

• Key Technological Processes

• Science

• Science• Science is knowing• The search for and theorizing

about cause• Making virtually value-free

statements• Analysis, generalization and

creation of theories• Corresponding Scientific

Processes

Page 5: TECHNOLOGY What is it and how does it affective your life?

• Focuses on understanding natural phenomena

• Discovery (controlled by experimentation)

• Drawing correct conclusions based on good theories and accurate data

• Experimental and logical skills needed

• focuses on understanding the made environment

• Design, invention, production

• Taking good decisions based on incomplete data and approximate models

• Design, construction, testing, planning, quality assurance, problem solving, decision making, interpersonal and communication skills

WHAT IS ENGINEERING AND HOW DOES IT RELATE TO

TECHNOLOGY?• Engineering is the process of creating technology.• Professional engineers, scientists, inventors, business owners, artists and even

students have engineered new technologies.• How you ask????

• Anyone can follow the engineering design process to solve a problem or address a need.

WHAT IS THE ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS?

Page 11: TECHNOLOGY What is it and how does it affective your life?

Let’s look at each step of the Engineering Design process.

• Step 1: ASK• Identify the problem or need. • Research the need or problem.• Examine the current state of the issue.• An example: Air pollution is a big problem. How can we

cut down on this? Design an automobile that uses a non polluting energy source.

Page 12: TECHNOLOGY What is it and how does it affective your life?

• Step 2: ImagineDevelop possible solutions.Brainstorm possible solutions. ( A group of people share

ideas quickly to promote additional ideas).Sometimes one product may spark an idea for another

product.Use math and science.Select the best possible solution.Determine which solution best meets the original needs.

Page 13: TECHNOLOGY What is it and how does it affective your life?

• Step 3 Design• Create the blue prints for your design. • Find the materials and items you’ll need

Page 14: TECHNOLOGY What is it and how does it affective your life?

•Step 4 Create•Make a prototype.• The prototype may be a physical model or a computer model.• This allows engineers to see if their design works,

Page 15: TECHNOLOGY What is it and how does it affective your life?

•Step 5 Test• Test and evaluate the solution.•Do the prototype do the job it was designed to do? Engineers make sure that the cost of designing and producing the new product is worth its benefit. This is called cost benefit analysis.• Is it safe, reliable and durable?

Page 16: TECHNOLOGY What is it and how does it affective your life?

• Step 6 Improve•Modify and retest the solution if necessary.• If it did not work well engineers would modify their prototype or try a new solution.

Page 17: TECHNOLOGY What is it and how does it affective your life?

•Step 7: Communicate•Communicate your results to other engineers and customers of the product.

Step 1: Identify a need Why did Tony Stark build the "Iron Man" suit? Step 2: Develop Possible Solutions What are some other options he could have built instead?

Step 2a: Pick the best design Do you think the "Iron Man" suit was the best design option?

Step 3: Make a prototype Where and how did Tony build his prototype(s)Step 4: Test the prototype Where and how did Tony test his prototype(s)Step 5: Modify and re-test the prototype How did Tony modify his prototype to make it work better?

The Iron Man Movies and the Engineering Design ProcessBillionaire genius and weapons designerTony Stark is captured by terrorists, and they want him to build a super-weapon. Instead he builds an armored exoskeleton to fight

them.

Address these questions about this prototype

Needs being addressed? What are some prototype design

considerations? What is the mark version? How would you test and re-test this prototype? What might be some unintended

consequences? Adaptive or assistive Bioengineering?
