Integrated Quality Control IQCStarting Point - User Community

There are still only few, not detailed recommendations regarding quality control procedures

High demand for concrete recommendations for QMon AWS level. (QM-terminology, QC-strategies on AWS level, QC algorithms, required metadata, ...)

CIMO Guide (WMO No. 8) contains extensive technical recommendations how to measure meteorological parameters

New hardware and software platform for AWS: Gealog SG Station Manager

Using most advanced technology in hardware and firmware

Based on this platform implementation of an extensive automatic quality control system which could be an example for future standardization work

Integrated Quality Control IQCStarting Point - Logotronic

Integrated Quality Control IQCTechnical Background

Nearly PC-processing power at AWS-level Implementation of more complex quality control procedures

Use of modern data transfer medias (GPRS, Meteosat HDR, ...) Possibility to transfer higher quantities of data and therefore integration of additional quality information.

Basic QC Philosophy

Basic philosophy for the definition of the quality control procedures:

“Detection of an error in advance before the error shows influence on the measured time series”

QC on User Interventions - Log-File

One entry for user-login and logout and each activity- which changes the AWS´s status (i.g. changing of parameters, ...)

Log-File entry contains:Date, time, user-id, short description of activity

Readout of Log-File together with stored measuring data

Monitoring of the working Environment and internal Parameters of the AWS Gealog SG offers a set of „internal measuring

channels“

Station battery voltage and temperature Voltage of the buffer battery used for the internal

real -time clock Internal temperature External supply voltage (mains or solar) Door-open contact

Additional Plausibility Test

Use of mathematical formulas to compute specific

quality criterias.

I.g.: Formula for monitoring of a sensor heater:

(Value(C1)<3)&(Value(C2)<2)

C1 Air temperature

C2 Heater current

Testing the System Time

Gealog SG offers the synchronization of the real-time clock from the network centre, from GPS or from the Web

At the synchronization the time difference between old and new setting of the clock is computed and checked. If there is a too high time-shift a time-error is detected. Measuring values, influenced by the clock synchronization are marked.

Recording of a Quality Tag The information-set for each data item is now: Time stamp - Measuring value - Quality Tag

Quality Tag

Actually defined quality tag values:

Identifier Description

A No errors detected

P Plausibility error detected

C No measuring value existing, fatal error

D free

W Maintenance

Z Time error detected

K Manually inputted check value

Support of manual Quality Control

Integrated graphic display with marking of values with Quality Tag below "A" in the graphic output

Direct connection of a video camera- Recording of images- Visual inspection of the AWS from the office desk

Conclusion Target: Automatic quality management system for the

whole measuring network based on ISO9001 recommendations

Consideration for future revisions of the CIMO Guide: - Integration of Quality Tags into the standard data sets- Definition of a Quality Tag system- Recommendations of sensor specific or measuring parameter specific quality checks and procedures on AWS level- Recommendations for AWS metadata including "on-line metadata" like actual images of the station
