March Against Hunger

The month of March is Minne-sota Food Share month. Let’s do our part by donating food to your child’s classroom for the Bemidji Food Shelf. This is a

wonderful time to teach your child the importance of sharing what we have with others less fortunate. They hope to raise $90,000 and collect 60,000 pounds of food. Calvary Lutheran Church is celebrating Lutheran Schools Week! Your child has been invited to sing a couple of songs during the 10:45 service on Sun-day March 2. We would love for your child and your family to join us. Please gather in the Fellowship Hall.

February has come and (almost) gone way too quickly! We are preparing for confer-

ences, and I am so impressed at what I have been seeing each and every day that

these children are in the classroom. Every day, the classroom staff watches the children with amazement as we

notice all of the growth these children have made this year already.

February has been very eventful. We started the month out with a very exciting week of BEARS and en-

joyed a Teddy Bear Picnic in room #7. We focused on the letters Qq & Jj for the remainder of the month. Next

month we will work on these letters: Kk, Uu, Vv, and Ww. As we focus on a letter each week, we do not go in al-

phabetical order. We focus on the straight line letters first, slowly adding the curves, and diagonal lines.

Our faith lesson has been about the Fishers of Men. Next month, we will begin the bible story about Feed-

ing the 5000. Along with this, March is Food Share Month and we will be teaching the children the importance of

helping our community.

We have been working on opposites, Dental hygiene, and nutrition this month as well. We will continue

with these important lessons as we also add rhyming to help celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

Pictures will be March 20-21 for the preschoolers. We will also begin our Easter story in the middle of

March. Don’t forget to sign up for a conference time on our door. If these times do not work for you, please let me

know and I am very willing to schedule a conference another date/time.

Enjoy the sunshine while you can!!!

Wanda, Barb, Kristine, and Jennifer

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our PJs and Pancake night. The food

was yummy and I really enjoyed playing in the tents with the kids. We began Febru-

ary learning the letter Bb. To celebrate we all brought in our favorite stuffed buddies and had a Teddy Bear Picnic

with all the classes. We then started on the letter Qq, and learned about the quiet queen and quacking ducks. Our

Valentines parties were a huge success and everyone loved exchanging valentines with their friends and making

their own frosted sugar cookies. There was a lot of frosting and sprinkles on those cookies! We will finish out Feb-

ruary with the letter Jj and plan to make jam with the children on the last days of the month. Our faith lesson for

this month has been, “Fishers of Men”. The kids are understanding what it means to follow Jesus and to help oth-

ers know him. Opposites have been our theme and the children were very quick to grasp this concept. We will fin-

ish out February with a unit on dental and nutritional health. We hope to have some special guests visiting our

classroom. Preregistration for families currently enrolled in our school opened on the 20th. I have already begun

assessments and conferences will be held on the afternoon of Wednesday March 5th and all day on Thursday

March 6th. If neither of these days work for you just let me know and we’ll come up with something else. If you

have not signed up yet, the signup sheet is on our classroom door.

March will be food share month and we will begin March with a celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. What

better way to begin our new theme of rhyming! As always, our doors are open. Come visit anytime.

Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious

or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not in-

sist on its own way; it is not irritable or resent-

ful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but re-

joices in the truth. It bears all thing, believes all

things, hopes all things, endures all things.

What a month February has been! We have been so busy with learning new

things and doing many different activities throughout the month.

Our faith lesson has been Fishers of Men and we have been talking about what it means to follow Jesus

and be his disciple.

We started the month learning the letter Bb. With the letter B, we focused our week on bears. We then

ended our week with a Teddy Bear Picnic. All three classrooms got together and sat on picnic blankets, listening

to fun music and shared a yummy teddy bear snack with our own teddies.

The letter Qq came next and we talked about all the fun words that started with the letter Q (quilt, queen,

quail, etc…). This was also the week of our Valentines Party. The students shared their Valentines, we played a

fun number matching game in the gym, made Valentines for our loved ones, and had fun celebrating the love we

have for one another. It was a good day for us to talk about how we can show love between us and our friends at

school.

We are ending the month with the last two weeks focusing on the letter Jj as well as dental and nutrition.

For the first week we are looking at how we properly brush and floss our teeth while doing many activities along

with actually practicing on egg cartons acting as our teeth. The students love doing the hands on activities. The

second week we are looking at healthy food versus non-healthy food. Students will sort the food, place food on the

food pyramid, and build a healthy plate to eat. We will end our two weeks making jam in school and enjoying it as

our snack.

Again, I would like to thank everyone for the support during my pregnancy. Like I said in the letter I had

sent home, if there is a change Joan or Tonia will let you know. Please address any concerns with myself or either

of them!

Sarah and Tonia

February is flying by in the Child Care room! Every week has featured a special

theme which have been highly enjoyable for the students and myself, as well. B is

for Bears was so much fun with bear headbands, honey pots for going on a honey hunt, Corduroy the Bear’s but-

ton sorting, and paper bag bear puppets. Valentine’s Day week was filled with making Valentine bags, creating

“quilts” for the letter Q, and lots of interesting Valentine books. (Thank you for all the Valentine cards and good-

ies—I loved them!) These last few weeks of February will be focused on Dental and Nutrition themes. The kids

have written a letter to the Tooth Fairy, asking her all sorts of questions (“What do you look like?” “What will you

do with our tooth?”) and we are expecting a letter back from her in a few days! Looking ahead to March, we will

be celebrating Dr. Seuss’ birthday with all things Dr. Seuss-themed! Dr. Seuss is one of my favorite units, so we

will have a wonderful time with his books and activities and crafts which will go along with them.

Our preschool and child care kids have been asked to sing for Calvary Lutheran Church on Sunday,

March 2 at the beginning of the 10:45am service! We are excited to get the opportunity to sing several of the

songs we’ve been working on this year in large-group music. We’re hoping for a good group of singers, so we’d like

as many of our students to attend as possible. See Joan, Pastor Genelle or myself with any questions.

Would you like your child to eat more fruits or veggies? Would you like your child to eat more fruits or veggies? Would you like your child to eat more fruits or veggies? Would you like your child to eat more fruits or veggies? Here are some creative ideas how! 1. Smoothies! Blend yogurt or milk with fruit pieces and crushed ice. Any fresh, canned or overripe fruits work

great. 2. Dips ~ there are many fruit or veggie dip recipes to try . Serve with raw veggies or fruit chunks 3. Homemade Trail Mix, using your favorite unsalted nuts, dried fruit, sunflower seeds, coconut, even cereals 4. Bugs on a log—celery stick, add peanut butter, and load with raisins. Cream cheese instead of peanut butter is

good too. 5. Frosty Fruits—place fresh fruits in the freezer, you can even make into popsicles by inserting

sticks into chunks then freeze. 6. Caterpillar Kabobs– assemble various fruits on skewers, you can also do with raw veggies. 7. Potato Person—Decorate half of a baked potato. Use sliced cherry tomatoes, peas and low-fat

cottage cheese to make a funny face. 8. Fruity Peanut Butterfly-use carrot sticks or celery for the body, attach wings made of thinly

sliced apples with peanut butter and decorate with halved grapes or dried fruit. **For more ideas, check www.choosemyplate.org
