How School Can Have a Negative Effect on Teens+ Written by All TeenHealth Members
Indubitably, most kids spend 1/5 of their lives in school. In the process, school contributes both negatively and positively on a teen’s health1. Approximately, 8 hours are spent in school for 243 days in Japan, for an average student2. As students focus on the negatives, this article will focus on so. The two common negative effects on teens are bullying and homework overwork.
Researchers from Waseda University in Japan states that in 1999, there were 9,462 victims of bullying in elementary, 19,383 victims in middle school, and 2,391 victims in high school3.
Despite such amount in 1999, last year in 2011, it was recorded that there were less than 5,000 bullies in total for kids in all range3. The rapid fall within the last 12 years suggests that there has been a strong attempt to stop bullying within Japan.
In Japanese school, the lowering of bulling was because the topic itself being publicly talked about, as well as teachers and parents began to preach peace and no-bullying acts to their children3. Although the number did lower, bullies are still in existence, still emotionally, verbally, and physically hurting people of all age4.
The other impact is the stress caused by overworking the student with homework. Students work 12-14 hours a day, each week5. This would be 84-96 hours a week.Spending more than half the week studying would be physically stressful, let alone emotionally stressful. The pressure of overworking the student prevents them from being able to interact with one another5. Being a student myself, it’s completely relatable to the amount of stress received by teachers, requesting students to complete intense amount of homework.
So the question now is, what can the teenagers do if school negatively affects them? Being a student myself, there are some actions you can take to lessen the stress. Here are some stress-reducing activities I sometimes do:
I. Have a hobby. It’ll help release stress and doing something you enjoy will make you feeling better. And hey, kicking soccer balls definitely release the stress out of me! Especially when I’m able to score the ball into the goal!
II. Write out your feelings on a letter and then burn it. It allows you to say whatever you want, without anyone ever seeing what you wrote!
III. Scream into a pillow. Despite what anyone says, it’s definitely helpful!

ArenaNet, the makers of Guild Wars 2 had outdone themselves again. The arts and screen quality is beautiful. Rather than just choosing a player, you’re able to customize with many options. The map itself is huge, taking weeks for one to get through even half. Attacking enemies and trading, it’ll be one heck of a adventure to go on. You can buy the game from Amazon, for $59.99. BUT WAIT, it’s currently on sale for only $44.80. Be ready for your adventure, now. Ready, set, embark!
Binding of Isaac: fun in a nutshellSet in a dark, twisted, gruesome world, this game will blow your mind. It’s background story is about a kid name Isaac basically being almost killed, or “sacrificed” by his mom to show God how much she is supportive of him. He runs away, by falling down a hole in his room, into a basement. Then you go through series of rooms and floors to in the end, fight against “mom”. Dispite it’s eerie plot, it’s an amusing game that can be spent hours on. The best part about this indie game is that all the rooms and floors are randomized, not knowing what will be in the next room. The graphics is beautiful and you’ll never get tired of it. You can buy it off STREAM, a site that sells a large number of different types of games. Buy it for less than $3 on steam now!

AlcohNormally, food goes through
esophagus and stomach, then body will absorb nutrition, however alcohol get absorbed into the body when it’s in stomach. Absorb means that it goes into the blood and go around the body. When the blood with alcohol go through the brain, brain begin to paralyze, so basically drank people are people with paralyzed brain. To resolve poisons like alcohol, human being has an internal organ called “Liver”. Liver do many works but one of them is to resolve poisons. However, to resolve alcohol, alcohol has to go around the whole body for a few times to go through the liver over and over again because liver cannot resolve alcohol easily. At first, alcohol resolved to acetaldehyde, then acetic acid, and in the end, the alcohol will be resolved to carbon dioxide and water. The point is that alcohol itself isn’t poison but resolved alcohol, “Acetaldehyde” is bad for human health.

olismAcetaldehyde is also included in
cigarettes; it is related to many causes of diseases and this acetaldehyde is a main reason of hangover. That is why drinking alcohol is not good for human’s health, even the adults. However, Japan’s law stated that anyone under 20 cannot drink alcohol because there are 2 reasons. One is because alcohol accelerates destroying brain cells. Newborn baby has about 14 billion of brain cells and when people pass 20 years old, about a hundred thousand to two hundred thousands of brain cells will be destroyed each day. Brain cells can’t be rejuvenate, which means that the brain will shrink after 20 years old. Thus it is not good to drink alcohol when human is in state of growth. Another reason is that the internal organs haven’t developed enough to resolve alcohol which gives harmful influence to organs, body and future because these effects can cause alcoholism or alcoholic dependence syndrome.

Asch Conformity Experiment 1950The picture above shows one line labeled X and the other 3 labeled individually A, B and C. Obviously, X fits with line B the best, however would your answer change if all of your other friends said that line A was definitely the right answer?
HUMAN PSYCHOLOGY
We, Humans:Humans are extremely dependent toward each other, and has a subliminal consciousness for each other.
THE ASCH EXPERIMENTThe Asch experiment will be based on mental health and human sociology, looking upon the movements and reactions of humans depending on society.
Conformity is a type of social
influence involving a change in belief or
behavior in order to fit in with a group[1].
The Asch conformity experiment is an
experiment published in the 1950’s which
demonstrated the influence of conformity
and how it effects an opinion[2].
Experiments led by Solomon Asch of
Swarthmore college asked groups of
students to participate in a "vision test."
In reality, all but one of the participants
were confederates of the experimenter,
and the study was really about how the
remaining student would react to the
confederates' behavior. In the actual
video that the experiment director took,
the participant, who was the only one
who did not know about this experiment,
was heavily influenced by the other 3
confederates. As the experiment director
asks which line out of A, B, and C fits
with line X the best, the 3 actors acting as
participants answer the wrong one , while
the participant is left wondering why
others have chosen the other answer
when their answer is obviously wrong.
Humans prove to be extremely social
creatures, as they are easily influenced by
what others think about you. After the
first couple questions, the participant
began to dislike the fact that his answers
were different compared to the other
‘participants’ and started to say the same
‘wrong’ answer along with the other
actors. The Asch experiment was later
tested with different variables, such as
answering in private. This decreased
conformity as there was less pressure to
what your answer was to be[3].
There's lots of people in this world
who spend so much time watching their health that they haven't
the time to enjoy it. ~Josh Billings

ExtraFunSchool advice! :-)
A video game that can help you in school?
That’s right! It sounds
like a ‘too good to be
true’ scenario but if
you are into real-time
battles and turn based
campaign strategy games
the Total War series is
for you! This game will
help you in history and
geography class. Its
older games Total War: Rome, Total War: Medieval 2 are very
enjoyable but do not go in depth of the historical situation of
their time period. The real educational games are Total War:
Empire, also coming out soon is Total War: Rome 2. These games go
in depth of the historical situation of their time period (Empire/
Napoleon 1700-1815) and how each nation dealt with each other.
These games are also great start if you are going to do economics,
you have to handle your countries’ economy and make sure you
profits are greater the expenditure. To add to that choosing you
government ministers is also a big part. But it’s not all managing
and governing, the real-time battles are massive and realistic and
explore the tactics the evolving tactics and military technologies
at the time. This game is greatly recommended if you like history
and countless hours of gameplay!

You do not have to be superman or some hero to save another person’s life. Although
cancer and brain tumors are inevitable, suicide is
not. There are preventions and list of symptoms that occur before suicide would be conducted.
Suicide isn't some simple topic, it is full of mystery and to experience it is a whole different
matter; it is complex and complicated.
It makes one question though, why life is that horrible to even consider committing
suicide? Getting up to the point of wanting to commit suicide is a fair journey to travel. There
are numerous reasons of why someone would
consider the thoughts of ending one’s life. According to the National Violent Death
Reporting System, out of 16 states in America, there were 30% who committed due to physical
health problems, 12% due to financial problems1,
and over 25% just had the intention to commit. Looking at the statistics, it is very well showing
that any problem could be the last straw for someone, and could throw them over the top.
Now knowing the reasoning of suicide in
one's mind, it'd be reasonable to question how to prevent or how to know whether someone has
suicidal thoughts. There are some preventions that I know of, personally knowing someone who
is suffering from depression. Because 87% to 98%
of those who commit suicide tend to suffer from mental disorder2, it would be good to go see
someone if you do feel blue or have even the slightest thought of wanting to die. The
situation could be a lot worse than it was thought
to be, and it's better to be on the safe side. Talking to someone about problems would be
another outlet of stress and could easily prevent someone from ending one's life. When someone
withdraws themselves from their family and
friends, it is another factor that is a symptom for suicide3.
Personally knowing someone who had
thoughts of suicide, it is possible to overcome. They had suffered 10 years of depression, and
had undergone therapy sessions. One thing they have told me though is that there was something
that stopped them from taking any actions. They
told me thinking about their children had stopped them from trying to commit suicide. They have
stated, “I couldn't even think of leaving my children and committing, I care about them too
much to do so.”
If you are a sufferer or some mental illness and it had brought you to even thinking
about committing suicide or you know someone who's suffering, it's best to talk to someone as
soon as possible. It could save a life, not only one.
There are higher risks of someone to end their life if they personally know someone has family
history of suicide attempts or completed suicide4. No one deserves to suffer themselves. If you or
someone you know ever suffers, there are national
suicide hotlines to contact:
Japanese Suicide Hotline5: 03-5286-9090American Suicide Hotline6: 1-800-SUICIDE
Remember, be happy and know you’re important.

Interview Review
1. Why do people get addicted to drags?
There are two ways to get addict to drags. genetically is one of the reason but other reason is because drugs change the brain in ways that foster compulsive drug abuse, quitting drugs are difficult to even those people who
are ready to stop once they used drug.
2.What are the symptoms of addictions? There are two type of symptoms, physical and behavioural signs. Physically drug users get shakes, nausea, disorder of sensation, cough, change of habits, irregular heart beat etc. For the behavioural symptoms, there are changea in friends, change of personality, drop
grades, changes in hobbies, paranoia, general lack of motivation, lack of energy, lack of self-esteem etc.
3. What is so appealing about drags? one reason is that atmosphere but most of time, the reason is that adults told teenagers to not to do dangerous things. However from teenagers who have curiosity what adults say are interesting and that appeals drugs or alcohols. Also teenagers don’t care about futures and that might be one of the reason.
4. What are the common drags used? Top 5 common drags are heroin, cocaine, Baribiturates, street methadone, and alcohol.

mustard• 2 teaspoons curry
powder• 1 teaspoon ground
cumin• Kosher salt• 2 cups panko (Japanese
breadcrumbs)• 3 skinless, boneless
chicken breasts (1 1/2 to 1 3/4 pounds), cut into 1-inch-wide strips

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Set a rack on a baking sheet and mist with cooking spray. Whisk the eggs, mustard, 1 teaspoon curry powder, the cumin and 1 teaspoon salt in a shallow bowl. Mix the panko with 1/2 teaspoon curry powder in another bowl.
Dip the chicken strips in the egg mixture, letting the excess drip off, then coat with the panko. Place the chicken on the rack and mist all over with cooking spray. Bake until golden brown and cooked through, about 20 minutes.

Dear editor, My anonymous friend is suffering from a Tabasco addic:on and its taking over her life. She’s spending a fortune on cigareDes and we all told her that it was a bad habit. We all decided that it was :me she stopped but my friend just can’t, she tried electronic cigareDes. Could you please write an ar:cle about figh:ng addic:on in the next release of Teen Health we would greatly appreciate it and I would help my friend fight her addic:on.
Sincerely Lucy.
Dear editor, I am an osteopath working in the United Kingdom. I love reading Teen Health but I couldn’t help but no:ce that last month’s magazine was slightly lacking. The sec:on about the similari:es between Osteopaths and Chiropractors bothered me. I no:ced that you didn’t men:on the difference in philosophy between the two; rather you looked more into the treatment differences. Both Osteopaths and Chiropractors see the importance of the spine staying healthy as it affects the whole body. In fact, this philosophy is shared by almost all tradi:onal healing arts as well as mar:al arts, including yoga and aikido. The philosophy behind treatments is as important as the course of it!
Sincerely John
Dear editor, I am the mother of an 18 year old son and a 15 year old daughter. I found that last month’s ar:cle about teen drug use was very informa:ve! I went through a drug experimen:ng period when I was younger and I am horrified how much it has become so much more dangerous (it was dangerous in my day too). Now a large amount of teenagers who experiment with drugs have died or had their lives ruined. I have decided to make my children completely aware about the dangers of drugs and be very open about the subject. My 18 year old son has already approached me and admiDed to have had tried Marijuana. The best op:on with drug use is to be open as a parent, there is no use trying to hide the informa:on because they will find it one day and I would rather have them be aware of the dangers. Thank you for the great ar:cle.
Sincerely Lucy.

In a “Teen Growth” ar:cle, it stated that the main ingredient, THC (delta-‐9-‐tetrahydrocannainol) could hold hundreds of other harmful chemicals, depending on how it’s cut. It also was said that marijuana nega:vely affects the sexual organs, lungs, heart, brain, and it also depresses the immune system. Reading the ar:cle had concern me with a ques:on: is marijuana as harmful as others reiterate it to be? From prior research, I had gone to believe it to not be as harmful of a drug as it’s said to be. I believe marijuana’s name is given too much nega:vity, and it’s not as harmful because of the false facts about the drug, beneficial parts of marijuana, and the comparison between marijuana and other drugs.
Marijuana had been told that it could cause cancerous cells to sprout but it’s quite the opposite.2 While cigareDes have the ability to cause cancer due to the tobaccos’ radia:on, marijuana does not have the same affect. According to the American Associa:on for Cancer Research, it was found that marijuana actually works to slow down tumour's growth. 2 It’s calamitous to hear that marijuana is known to cause cancer. In my opinion, it could be due to the mix of other drugs that lead to cancer. It could possibly be given an incorrect label. While the erroneous label is there, there are also benefits of marijuana.
According to the men’s health sec:on of AskMen, marijuana is capable of trea:ng
symptoms such as pain and nausea which are caused by many illnesses. 3 According to Joan Bello from the Benefits of Marijuana, marijuana enhances both sides of the brain as well as helping the body create cleaner blood sent to the brain. 4
It’s not harmful, and marijuana could provide those suffering an outlet for all the pain to go. It’ll benefit them emo:onally, and physically.
Comparing marijuana to other drugs, it’s completely safe. According to Jack E. Henningfield, the annual American deaths from marijuana are 0, while tobacco’s death is approximately 400,000, and alcohol is 100,000. 5 How is jus:fied when alcohol is death leading yet it’s legal while marijuana isn’t? So what’s the big harm.
Scien:sts have proven marijuana to be safe, but of course it has their own disadvantages too. In the end, what maDers though to the world; the benefits or the disadvantages? Time will tell.
Editorial: Marijuana not dangerous?
