StatisticsUnited States Nearly 900,000 teenage girls in the United States become

pregnant each year. About 19,000 girls aged 14 and under become pregnant in

the United States each year–that’s one child every 30 minutes.

New Mexico For every 1,000 teenage females (ages 15 to 19):

92 pregnancies 62 births

Teen birthrate is more than 60% higher than the national rate.

Highest rate of teenage pregnancies in the nation and the second highest teenage birthrate.

EducationTeenage Mothers

40% Graduate from High School 23% get a GED 5% get a two year degree by 20 years old Less than 2% get a four year degree by 30 years

old.

Child of Teenage Mother 2/3 Graduate from High School 50% more likely to repeat a grade than children of

mothers who were over 20 years old at time of birth

PovertyTeenage Mother

Poverty is the factor most strongly related to teen pregnancy.

60% of teen mothers are living in poverty at time of birth.

More than 40% of teenage mothers report living in poverty by age 27.

Child of Teenage Mother A child born to a teen mother who has not finished

high school and is not married is nine times more likely to being raised in poverty than a child born to an adult who has finished high school and is married.

Target Skill DependenceUser learns about types of birth control, correct usage, and sexual activity. She practices making choices regarding preparing contraceptive methods and preparing for the event of sexual activity.

EmpowermentIf the learner knows the ability to control her reproductive cycle is her responsibility and that she is able to control it, she can take that sense of empowerment into her life and hopefully also transfer that confidence into achieving other goals.

Flexible Completion CriteriaThe learner will have the option of choosing the type of situation she will be in during her teenage years (ex. Steady boyfriend, casual boyfriends) and whether she chooses abstinence, safe sex, or risks getting pregnant.
