Teenager Paige Jones & High Cotton Lane Capture BFA World Futurity ChampionshipBy Tanya Randall Wayne, Oklahoma, teenager Paige Jones became the young-est rider ever to win the BFA World Championship Futurity. The 16-year-old piloted the 4-year-old gelding High Cotton Lane to a $44,305 Championship at the 33rd annual running of the event, held December 4-8 in Oklahoma City.Jones, a homeschooled high school junior, candidly said the most surprising thing about her was “being able to do well against all the people who have trained for as long as I am old.” They started off the event with a 13th-place run of 15.704 in the first go, worth $756. “The first round the ground was a little sketchy,” she said. “I just went in there and made a good run. He kind of slipped and slid past first but got it back together and had a good second and third. I didn’t want to push him too hard and get him hurt for one run and have him be out for all of next year. I made sure he was safe first.” Better conditions made them more confident on their second run of 15.375—the second-fastest qualifying time of the Futurity—which finished second in the round for $3,379. “The second round, I knew the ground was better so I pushed him in there more,” she said. “Since he kind of ran by the first a stride or two on his first run, I checked him a little bit earlier. He inhaled his first and had a really good second and third.” In the finals, Jones and Cotton were 43rd in the draw, right before Kay Blandford and her homebred KB Angel Ta Fame, who swept the two qualifying rounds. They had another giant to await, in Janet Staton and Jennifer Fite’s JS Milo And Stitch, who had the third fastest qualifying time. “I knew I had to be fast, but I knew smooth and clean
would get me up there pretty good,” she said. “I wasn’t expecting to win it. I checked him a little early at first but threw it back at him. He turned it really good. The second and third he was really in tune and really came around. He kind of got caught up in the ground at the third. He came off of it a little wide, but overall, I was really happy with him.” The daughter of Jack and Kay Jones followed her older sister Ceri McCaffery into the rodeo arena. It was while visiting Royal Vista to get her sister’s mare bred that the family first came across Cotton. “My mom saw him in a stall,” she explained. “She liked the way he looked and she kept going back to look at him. We saw that he was in a sale, so we went to try to buy him and ended up with him.” Bred by Bob Burt, Cotton is double-bred Dash Ta Fame. He is by The Goodbye Lane, the product of a magic cross between Lanes Leinster and Dash Ta Fame. The Goodbye Lane is out of the stakes-winning mare Swift Goodbye, a daughter of Fame out of a Fiesta In The Sky mare just like Dash Ta Fame’s leading barrel rac-ing stallion The Red Dasher.

Chris Martin and VF Leo Stinson came away $100,000 richer after winning the BFA Super Stakes, held December 4 in Oklahoma City. The BFA Super Stakes is open to 60 “slot holders,” who must name their horses for the race in early October. The race is for 3-year-olds making their career debuts. Their very first runs of their career is for a $100,000 first-place check. Past Super Stakes Champion Marne Loosenort took an early lead with Danny Kingins’ Entitled Ta Fame with a 15.981 just eight horses into the race. Running for CM Barrel Horses and Del Farms, Martin and VF Leo Stinson took the lead with a 15.831 with just 15 horses left to work. Bred by Victory Farms, VF Leo Stinson is by leading sire Eddie Stinson out of the Coup De Kas (TB), Go Dick Go mare Licorice Leotard. Martin, a barrel horse trainer from Collinsville, Texas, was close to having won the Super Stakes once before in 2015 with Frenchmans Perk. Martin and Frenchmans Perks finished second in the Super Stakes before winning the Juvenile Futurity later in the week.

Cotton’s dam is the Dash Ta Fame daughter HMB Soon Tobe Fa-mous, who is a full sister to BFA Derby finalist Taylors Short Shot, Speedhorse Non Pro Futurity Champion Shut The Front Door and Old Fort Days Futurity finalist Short Wine Dash. He was purchased at the 2015 Heritage Place Yearling Sale for $6,500. After being sent off as a 2-year-old to be started under saddle, Jones started Cotton on the pattern as a 3-year-old. “Janae Massey helped me with getting him going the right way,” said Jones, who had tuned problem horses before but never trained one from scratch on her own. “He was super easy. He’s always been super turny, even from the first day I started him on barrels. He picks up on things super easy. He’s just been solid all year, ever since I started pushing him.” Cotton didn’t make his futurity debut until The Patriot. He won the Doxa Futurity and Slot Race, just their second aged event. They also finished fourth at the Pink Buckle Futurity. Their career earn-ings are more than $100,000. Although she’s enjoying the futurities with how well they’re run and especially how well they pay, Jones is a rodeo girl at heart. She won the 2016 Wrangler National Jr High Finals Rodeo Girls’ All-Around Championship after her eighth-grade year. This past year, she won the Oklahoma High School Rodeo Association’s Barrel Racing Championship. It’s no surprise where Cotton’s future lies after his post-BFA break.
“I’ll probably try to qualify him to the American Semifinals and just hit some derbies and jackpots after that,” said Jones, who wanted to thank her family for all their support. “I’m going to try to save him for when I turn 18 so I can rodeo on him.”

By Tanya Randall Picking a horse for the BFA’s $100,000 slot race for 3-year-olds is never an easy task. In October, Bolin, who rides for Bill and Cheryl Kennedy’s Smoke Creek Farm, picked Famous Sassy Firebug (“Rojo”), a Fire On Bug, Dash Ta Fame gelding as her slot horse over the French-mans Guy, Dash Ta Fame filly Tinys Stormy Weather. Bolin’s and Rojo’s first career outing in the BFA Super Stakes was a $15,000 fourth-place finish. “It’s just really tough when you have two horses that you really like,” said Bolin, an Ohio native now residing in Bennett, Colorado. “You have to name them so early. We had gone through a little bit of a struggle, a little growing pain at the time. The Famous Sassy Firebug was doing really well at the time and everything was in line for him.” However, the best was yet to come with Stormy taking home a $17,026 BFA Juvenile Championship, outrunning the largest field of 3-year-olds in the event’s history. “We really proud of both of them,” said Bolin. “We’re really proud of all the Smoke Creek horses. I’m still like ‘Oh my gosh!’”The Smoke Creek Team left the 33rd Annual BFA World Champi-onships—the last one held at the State Fairgrounds in Oklahoma City—with $44,733 between their three 3-year-olds. Rojo and Boh-lin also finished 20th in the BFA Juvenile to bump their earnings to $15,972. Cody Bauserman and the Tres Seis, Dash Ta Fame stallion Papagaio, picked $11,775 after finishing 10th in the Super Stakes and 12th in the BFA Juvenile. All three horses were bred by the Kennedy’s. Tiny Bit Of Fame, a Fame daughter that Cheryl used to run. “She’s produced two really nice mares, so I’m like, ‘Let’s keep doing that! Let’s go back to Frenchmans Guy!’” laughed Bolin, who won the Colorado Classic Futurity on Stormy’s full sister French Lady Pistol this past June. Bolin said she’s noticed some similarities between Stormy and her older sister, even though they look nothing alike“As we’ve gone along, we’ve noticed some similarities between the two,” she said. “I think it might be the Frenchman’s Guy, but there both going in there looking to work. Stormy might be a little differ-ent right now, probably because she’s so young, just getting started out, but she’s a little free-er into the turns than Pistol. Pistol was super work-y. You have confidence in them to go in there and do their job. It was kind of neat to have to full siblings.” When Bolin and Bauserman started working for the Kennedy’s last summer, Stormy already had been well started. “She was broke when we got there,” she explained. “Bill hires a couple of guys who come spend a couple of months at the farm, doing all the colt breaking. Lara Alexander did a lot of riding on her before we were there. Even when we were there, she spent a lot of

time on the colts. By the time we got around to them, they all had a pretty good start on them.” Bolin said Stormy had the typical growing pains but trained up well. With her older sister’s turn-y nature and her tendency to lean that direction, also influenced her decision to name Rojo as the slot horse. “The gelding is a super free runner and has an aggressive style,” she added. “I personally like that. I’m really comfortable on that type. That’s another reason (he got the slot race call). I figured I would be more comfortable.” By foregoing the slot race with her, Bolin was able to run Stormy at a jackpot on December 1. “She won it and that was exciting,” she said. “She had a couple of bobbles and some things we needed to work on but most every-thing we need to do with her, we can do away from the pattern.”In her exhibition at Oklahoma City, Bolin used to the time to get the mare comfortable with then pen. “I tried to let her spend as much of the exhibition letting her see things,” she explained. “Like at the second barrel, I tried to spend a little more time over there because of the wall and the people standing there, so she’d be comfortable. With 45 seconds, you don’t get a lot of time, but I pushed it and got out of there in about 41-42 seconds.” In the first go, they turned in a second-place finishing 15.644 on a smooth, solid run.
“The first run, I try not to put any pressure on me or the horse, especially at a really big venue like that,” she said. “Her first run she was top of the ground and it was really smooth. You never really know what to expect going in there. You know you have a nice horse, but you just want smooth, good experiences for them. “She was a little bit green in the alleyway. She was kind of waiting on me, but once she realized we were going, she took off and went. Everything was really smooth her first run. She was a little short at the second barrel, but she was great about listening and took that extra step for me when I touched that outside line. I was really tickled with how she ran, and how hard she ran.” They finished 13th in the second round with a 15.799 on the bot-tom of the ground. “She tried really hard,” Bolin said. “It wasn’t as perfect turn-wise, but she was a little more aggressive run-wise, and I think that helped us a little bit. She really got up in there and had enough mo-mentum to carry her through the deeper ground. She just ran really hard the second go. I was just tickled she stayed forward through some heavier ground. Bolin wanted to thank the Kennedys for all their support and for raising such fine horses. She also want to thank Bauserman for all his support and knowledge. Lastly, she wanted to commend the Smoke Creek crew including farrier Kiki Corona and veterinarian Chris Morrow.

By Hope Raley If you are a futurity trainer and you have hopes of entering the prestigious BFA, you might want to reconsider when you see Cle-ments, Maryland trainer Brandon Cullins’ name throughout the draws. Cullins is considered the King of the BFA having 5 World Championships on his resume (3 in the derby, 1 futurity, and 1 juve-nile), adding his third derby championship last weekend as the BFA wrapped up its final year at the Jim Norick Arena. “It still doesn’t seem real somedays,” Cullins graciously explained. “The fact that I have 5 BFA World Championships on my resume is just surreal. I still wake-up and think, ‘was that all a dream’? I am very grateful to the horses and their owners.” Cullins claimed the 2018 BFA Derby Championship aboard the 6-year-old chestnut gelding by Brookstone Bay and out of Speedy Petitti by Lanes Leinster owned by the late Sarah Griffin. Cullins and Griffin met five years ago and formed a very solid friendship from the word ‘go’. “She was such a good person and was always a good time, no matter what,” said Cullins. “I remember going to an American Qualifier with her where we both royally sucked, but it was probably the most fun I’ve ever had.” Griffin, who passed away on November 4th, 2018, succumbed to her 17-month battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain tumor. Griffin was only 41 when she left this world. A horse lover and barrel racing enthusiast since elementary school, Griffin approached Cullins about piloting her prized steed “Stoney” after she had found out that she was ill. “It was an honor that she asked me to ride Stoney and now its an even greater honor that I was able to pilot him to this win. I sit back and think that the only reason I was given the opportunity to ride Stoney is because Sarah got sick. She would’ve been on him had she not gotten sick and I can’t help but think how I wish that would’ve been so. But unfortunately, it wasn’t, and I just hope that I made her proud.” After laying down a flawless run of 15.309-seconds to win round 1, Cullins opted out of running Stoney in round 2.“He worked excellent in the first round. He stayed honest and it was a smooth, easy run. I couldn’t fault him at all during that run.” Cullins describes the talented gelding’s style as different but very efficient. “Stoney is the one of the fastest horses that I’ve ever sat on. He stays round, never quits moving, and instead of setting an inside hind leg, all four stay pulling throughout the turn. He is always go-ing forward,” Cullins said. With the same game plan as round 1, Cullins prepared for the short round as he did any other run. The homework was done and Cullins knew that he had the horse that could get the job done. When Stoney seemed a little less then enthused about their future endeavors, Cullins made him more aware of what was going on. “I moved him around and worked on quickening up his feet. He took that as a hint and I thought ‘oh shoot I might’ve messed this up’,” laughed Cullins. “But in true Stoney nature, he made a great run and won the short round with a 15.184.” With a 30.493 as their two-run aggravate, Cullins was motioned
to the arena to accept his 3rd derby world championship title. “Sarah’s husband Tom flew in to cheer us on and that is something that I will forever be grateful for. He and Sarah were always so incredibly supportive and having him there to see us win the derby was very special.” When asked what he believes makes Stoney a winner, Cullins an-swers that it is his speed and desire to run barrels. He also believes that Stoney’s mental game gets stronger with every run. “When I first got Stoney, he didn’t have much of a personal-ity. He would just hang out in his stall, not really demanding any attention. The more runs we made and the better he got, the more personable he became. He almost got cocky and now he is pretty proud of himself.” Proud he should be, and proud his guardian angel is.

At the halftime (through 5 rounds) of the NFR, the barrel racing race is pretty much where it started, Kinsel sits in the driver’s seat. If she continues to make fast clean runs she will cruise to a world title and maybe even break the record on one year season earnings. If she does happen to hit a barrel or two, Moore is back $78 in #2 position and Miller, Pozzi Tonozzi, Lockhart, Routier, and Conrado are just a little bit more back. These ladies are probably the only ones with a realistic shot and even then they will have to be getting
good round checks and staying right at the top of the average if they plan to catch Kinsel. Routier leads the average by almost 3/4 of a second right now and Miller, Pozzobon, and Fischer also have 5 clean runs. Moore has already earned $93,346 and Kinsel has earned $67,750. If you notice the NFR earnings seem a little off, each contestant received $10k of prize money just for showing up, so that is tacked onto their NFR prize money.

Hailey Kinsel & DM Sissy Hayday were first out and stayed first through all 15 barrel racers. Starting out 2018 just where they left off in 2017! Cp Dark Moon and Amberleigh Moore placed second again showing their love for the Thomas & Mack. Its their 14th time to place in 21 rounds at the NFR! KN Fabs Gift Of Fame and Ivy Conrado started off another solid NFR winning 3rd and look to repeat their $150k+ performance from the 2017 NFR. Rafter W Minnie Reba and Nellie Miller started their 2018 NFR with the same solid runs that led them to the 2017 world title, running a 13.79 and winning 4th. Tracy Nowlin and her $1,800 internet purchase, DJG Madison, pulled a check in their first run at the NFR as did Hell On The Red & Kylie Weast in 5th & 6th place respectively. Lisa Lockhart decided to run younger bucksin, Rosas Cantina CC, but tipped the 3rd barrel. Also the other change from the predicted NFR horses, Jessie Telford rode Shufire. That made it 11 mares, 3 gelding, and 1 stud running down the alley for the 1st round. The 3-year-old sorrel filly, ridden by Nicole Ratkowksi, placed 14th in the second go of the Juvenile Futurity on the morning of the sale. Consigned by RNR Performance Horses, Streakers Queen is by leading sire A Streak Of Fling out of the Dash Ta Fame, Corona Cartel mare Queen Fa Tima. She is a full sister to Streakin Queenie ($71,000+ earnings) and Streakin Ta Corona ($40,000+ earnings). The BFA Sale featured 100 consignments with 95 head walking through the ring for a gross of $1,088,900. With just 19 repurchas-es, 76 head (80 percent) changed hands for a net of $859,900. The average on net was $11,312, while the median price was $7,850. Forbez was the highest-selling 2-year-old and highest selling Dash Ta Fame, bringing $48,000 from John Shields. Pete Oen consigned the brown colt, out of EJ Marthas Feature, by Marthas Six Moons. The third and fourth high-selling horses commanded price tags of $40,000 each. Ceri McCaffery purchased the JB Quarter Horses consignment Mr JB 1611. Did you know that the Lord Jesus is talking to us all the time? And in John 10:1-5, it tells us that the sheep (us) hear the shepherd’s voice (Jesus) and a stranger (devil) we will
not follow. That’s all really clear isn’t it? Oh, but there are times when we need answers and we are trying to hear from God and it seems like our head just won’t shut up! How do we navigate that? We must spend enough time in the Word of God that we know His voice. You recognize your best friend on the phone, right? You’ve spent enough time with them that YOU. JUST. KNOW. Well I took my grandkids to the barrel race with me. Mostly I don’t hear anyone during my run. But this time as I headed to first, I heard these two little girl voices, yelling “Go Gramma!” It was
sooooo sweet! On to second and around the third. As I was leaving third, I was hearing LOTS of voices yelling, “Go Gramma!” Um-mmm. Those weren’t ALL my grandkids voices! It was so funny! Let’s spend enough time with God that when someone else starts talking, we’ll know the difference!
