A year ago, major support systems suppliers

like Oracle and HP were predicting an

uptick in deployments o Operations and

    Business Support Systems (OSS/BSS) or

    telecommunications service providers.

A search through the BNamericas story

archive confrms the prediction, with at

least a dozen support systems contracts

reported so ar this year, compared to hal

that number in all o 2009.

The main reason is simply that its a long

time since telcos last upgraded their

systems, but their hands have also been

orced by the rapid rate o change in their

industry, both due to internal development

and external actors like competition and

    market dynamics.

The complexity o their operations has also

increased as telcos evolve into multi-serviceproviders, coupled with the inevitable march

o these services into varied consumer

    segments that demand alternative pricing

    and packaging structures.

In this report we see how the latest breed

    o OSS/BSS systems provides telcos with a

solution to these inherent problems, and

we learn how much interest Latin American

operators are showing in this option.

    years old.

Telefnica: A taste of Europeansophistication?Transer o the European mindset is

limited by the act that Telenicasneeds and orientation are not thesame in Latin America, the newworld having a much greateremphasis on prepaid mobile andmuch lower fxed broadbandpenetration.

Managed services aspectNot only have OSS/BSS vendorsdrawn the carriers attention with thedirect benefts o these systems, butservice providers are increasinglywilling to outsource the operation o

the platorm to the vendor. An example of a catch-all support platform
