Involving the TELEIOS User Community
• Capturing the requirements of the TELEIOS user community
• 1st User Community Workshop: User Requirements Analysis:
• Continuous testing and evaluation of TELEIOS infrastructure by the community
• 2nd User Community Workshop: Informal but structured feedback: Interactive demonstrations, Discussions and Questionnaires
• 3rd User Community Workshop: User evaluation of final system
• Keep the interested stakeholders informed about the evolution of the project and provide a platform to contribute
• Project Newsletter + Video
• User Community Workshops
• Various dissemination activities (publications, presentations, …)
5
Goals of this Workshop
• To inform you on the evolution and status of TELEIOS
• Ensuring community support
• Providing you a platform to express your expectations towards the project
• To demonstrate the implemented system components and receive your feedback on their usability
• To demonstrate and to discuss the effectiveness and applicability of innovative methods for improving the access to EO data
• To collect suggestions and requirements for the system evaluation that will be performed by the end of the project
3rd User Community Workshop in 2013

Report from 1st Workshop
• 13 October 2010, hosted by ESA in Frascati
• Around 30 participants
• Focus on:
• presenting the vision of TELEIOS to the international Earth Observation community
• capturing the EO community’s requirements for the TELEIOS infrastructure to be developed
• With a methodology based on user stories a set of high-level requirements was successfully captured in the brainstorming sessions
• In the aftermath of the workshop, these high-level requirements were prioritized and categorized by the TELEIOS use cases leaders NOA and DLR. They serve as a basis for the ongoing use case developments.
User Stories
User stories is characterised through the following elements:
• Short natural language sentences describing desired functionality of a system
• User stories help in ensuring a common understanding between the different stakeholder groups (developers, end users).
• They could also be seen as a script for a demonstrator to be developed later on.
A user story is a short sentence and might follow the pattern
“As a <role> I want <something> so that <benefit>”
8
User Stories – Examples
(1) As an end user of EO data products, I want to query the products based on their semantic
content and on the geographical extent using a single query
in order to increase precision and recall in the EO image discovery process and to reduce manual
effort
(2) As an expert user (EO Scientist / Scientific User, Service Provider),
I want to be able to trigger a computation that updates the threshold values based on the information on “validated hotspots” I have input before
(3) As an EO expert, I want to have full transparency of all features of a
software I use for Image Information Mining in order to be able to assess the suitability of the
generated EO product for my needs

Post-Workshop Activities (II)
From User Stories to Use Cases
1. Transfer User Stories into Use Cases
• Identify user stories that cover functional requirements on the system
• Group the user stories and identify related user stories and the nature of the relationship such as generalization, specialization.
• Identify user stories that can be transferred to whole use cases and those that correspond to parts of use cases.
Use Cases follows a formal structure (template) and cover details such as preconditions, steps in a success scenario or processed data

• Components are still under development
• No formal evaluation of the functionalities is foreseen at this point in time
• We solicit your feedback through:
• Interactive demonstrations and discussions
• Feedback questionnaire:
• Consists of a set of generic questions concerning your interests and expertise followed by specific questions for each individual session
• Time is allocated at the end of each session for filling out the questionnaires

Introductory Round
Some topics that we are interested in:
– Please describe your daily work with EO data. Which user role describes your work with EO data best (scientific user, end user, software developer for EO software…)
– From the things that you heard before about TELEIOS:
– What are your generic expectations towards the project?
– How do you expect to benefit in your daily work from the TELEIOS software?
– What would you consider the most exciting development?
– Is there any important related problem that the TELEIOS project is not addressing?
– Which tools are you using for your work with EO data?
– Which workshop sessions are of most interest for you?
There is time allocated in the afternoon for short use case presentations
