Summer at Telfair Museums was a winning mix of fashion, photography, and creativity! The Art of Great Fashion featured Marc Jacobs’ designs and was another record-breaking event in support of our educational outreach and lecture series. We held a kids’ photo contest with the Sand Gnats baseball team, inspired by our Helen Levitt: In the Street exhibit. You can see 12-year-old Jordan Palmer’s winning photo outside the Levitt Gallery through September. Our summer camps were brim-ming with creative youngsters, some of whom used our new 3D printer to make jewelry and other art.

At the Jepson Center, our Marilyn Monroe and Kirk Varnedoe Collection exhibits pleased audiences enormously through much of the summer. They were succeeded by the poignant, evocative Whitfield Lovell: Deep River. The exhibition opened in mid-August, and I am eager to learn the stories and feelings Deep River calls forth among those who experience its remarkable journey.

Telfair Academy guests are enjoying Romantic Spirits: Nineteenth-Century Paintings from the Johnson Collection. The gorgeous landscapes, portraits, and narrative history paintings from the Romantic movement hang in elegant splendor in the 19th-century Telfair family mansion. Rarely has an exhibi-tion complemented the galleries’ architectural design so perfectly.

Telfair’s national recognition continues to grow. I am proud to announce that our Slavery and Freedom in Savannah project has received the prestigious national Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History. The project is part of Telfair Museums’ ongoing efforts to document the lives of the African Americans, both enslaved and free, who built and worked at Telfair’s two historic homes. In receiving the award, Slavery and Freedom in Savannah is credited with representing the best in the field and providing leadership for the future of history.

As we move into fall, Deep River is joined by a Savannah-focused exhibit. Port City: The Savannah Riverfront through Artists’ Eyes opens in September and tells the story of the Savannah riverfront across nearly 300 years. Then and now, the Savannah River is vital to Savannah’s prosperity and character. Port City shows us the riverfront’s changing complexion, even as its fundamental nature stays the same.

Continuing our focus on Savannah, in October we are joining forces with local collectors to present Savannah Collects, an exhibit that allows museumgoers to peek through the keyholes of our com-munity’s doors and see the art our neighbors display in their homes. I daresay Savannah Collects will be the favorite show of many visitors; I know I am looking forward to seeing these beloved personal pieces on view.

Our member group volunteers continue to find exciting new ways to support Telfair Museums, for which I am deeply grateful. I invite you all to roll the dice with the William Jay Society at September’s Monte Carlo casino night event. The Telfair Academy Guild is mounting a brand-new October event, Rooms With A View: Southern Style. Well-known designers Phoebe and Jim Howard will be at Telfair and will join five of our most prolific local interior designers to create a series of rooms that will trans-form the Jepson Center! And in November, Telfair Museums celebrates the 20th Telfair Art Fair. We have a terrific lineup of artists participating this year, whose works befit this important anniversary. I hope to see everyone at Arty Party on November 14th!

Telfair Museums could not offer innovative exhibits like Deep River, beautiful works like Romantic Spirits, or personal and intimate shows like Savannah Collects and Port City without the enduring support of you, our members. Thank you for your attendance, your time and hard work, your words and letters of encouragement, and your patronage. Because of you, Telfair Museums stands strong.

Whitfield Lovell: Deep River and Selected WorksAugust 15, 2014–February 1, 2015 / Jepson Center

“It’s dark and a bit cold. Sounds of chirping birds and flowing water fill the air. Then the smell of dank soil hits, and as your eyes adjust, the mournful resonance of the spiritual Deep River rises up and surrounds you. Projections of water, with sunlight twinkling and glancing, ebb and flow. At times they are hypnotic, at times psychedelic, always mesmer-izing. This is Whitfield Lovell’s latest installation, Deep River, a deeply haunting, evocative, and poignant exploration of the flight to freedom that has challenged many throughout time.”*

Painter and installation artist Whitfield Lovell is internationally renowned for his thought-provoking portraits and signature tableaux. In this exhibition, Lovell utilizes sculpture, video, drawing, sound, and music to create an environment that fully engages our senses and emotions. His art pays tribute to the lives of anonymous African Americans and is univer-sal in its exploration of passage, memory, and the search for freedom.

The large scale of the current exhibition allows the viewer to experience three distinct and compelling aspects of the artist’s work, including examples of Lovell’s trademark tableaux, work from his Kin series, and the extraordinary Deep River installation.

The multi-media Deep River installation converts a 2,500-square-foot gallery into a unique environ-ment, which the viewer enters and experiences

as a personal journey. The darkened space, which Lovell designed specifically for the Jepson Center, surrounds the viewer with projected images of a flowing river, as the sounds of chirping birds and the river’s rushing currents fill the air. The center of the gallery contains a massive mound of dirt, strewn with everyday objects seemingly abandoned by past inhabitants of the space. Dozens of reclaimed wooden discs, each containing a portrait of a single figure, surround the mound of dirt and populate the installation. Together, these elements create a haunting and mesmerizing passage.

The exhibition also features tableaux that Lovell has produced since 2008. The artist creates these unique works by drawing life-sized charcoal por-traits on wooden objects such as sections of walls, fences, or barrels. He juxtaposes these drawings with everyday found objects—including clocks, irons, frying pans, and bed frames. Tableaux such as Pago Pago and Autour du Monde feature uni-formed soldiers, referencing the service of African Americans through two world wars for a country that still did not acknowledge their civil or human rights. Billie Holiday’s rendition of the song, “I Cover the Waterfront,” plays softly from Pago Pago. A collection of globes is placed in front of Autour du Monde, invoking both the adventure of travel and the dangers for soldiers fighting abroad.

Also included in the exhibition are a number of mixed media drawings from Lovell’s ongoing Kin series. Each of the Kin works features a portrait along with a single object. The pairing of the two creates intriguing narratives that are left open for the viewer’s interpretation. The images come from mug shots, photo IDs, passport images, and photo booth shots that Lovell has collected.

Whitfield Lovell’s artwork is filtered through his personal history and memories. His father constantly took candid and posed photos of family and friends. These family photos, combined with Lovell’s extensive travels throughout Europe, the Americas, and parts of Africa, inform much of the artist’s work.

In 2007, Lovell was named a MacArthur Fellow. The prestigious fellowship, commonly referred to as the “genius grant,” is bestowed on “individuals who have shown exceptional creativity in their work and the promise to do more.” Lovell’s work has appeared in numerous solo and group exhibitions at national venues such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Port City: The Savannah Riverfront through Artists’ EyesSeptember 12, 2014–January 4, 2015 / Jepson Center

Since the founding of Savannah in 1733, artists have gravitated toward the city’s waterfront. Drawn from local collections, the Library of Congress, and Telfair Museums’ collection, Port City tells the story of the Savannah riverfront as depicted by artists in prints, drawings, paintings, and photographs from the 1730s to the present.

Artists have captured the vibrancy of life on this working river, from important historical events to daily life in Georgia’s port city. The exhibition begins with the best-known early image of Savannah, a 1734 engraving that shows General James Oglethorpe’s famous plan for the city taking shape on the bluff above the river. Moving on, the viewer glimpses Civil War river activity in drawings by William Waud and photographs by George N. Barnard. Eliot Clark’s moody, nocturnal paintings of River Street capture the industrial waterfront of the early twentieth century.

Beginning in the 1930s, the old riverfront warehouses became sought-after studio spaces for visiting and local artists from Alexander Brook to Anna Hunter, who are both represented in the exhibition. Vessels plying the river in the twentieth century were documented by talented locals from self-taught artist and sailor William O. Golding to iconic Savannah painter Christopher A.D. Murphy and photographer Jack Leigh. Visitors and residents alike can appreciate the stories that unfold in Port City: The Savannah Riverfront through Artists’ Eyes.

Savannah CollectsOctober 3, 2014 – January 18, 2015 / Jepson CenterTelfair Museums has teamed up with local collectors in the greater Savannah area to present Savannah Collects, an exhibit of beloved treasures housed throughout the community. From eighteenth- and nineteenth-century silver, furniture, paintings, and prints to modern and contemporary art, Savannah Collects will give members and visitors a chance to see the kind of art their neighbors live with. Lenders to the exhibition have each graciously spared one beloved object from their collections for the duration of the show.

The diversity of the exhibit reflects Savannah’s wonderfully eclectic tastes in fine and decorative arts. Objects range from a small 18th-century tea caddy made by the English female silversmith Elizabeth Godfrey to whimsical objects, such as a former environmental section of art from the property of famed Georgia self-taught artist Howard Finster. Also on display is a bright orange, bulbous sculpture by contemporary artist Roxy Paine. While exploring a glimpse into hidden Savannah, visitors will enjoy pondering the concept of collecting art and may feel inspired to start or build their own holdings!

I I Have Marks to Make exhibition and program brings together art and performances by participants of all ages and backgrounds. From its beginnings as a small exhibition highlighting art from the City of Savannah’s therapeutics program, I Have Marks to Make has grown to include local hospitals, agencies that serve indi-viduals with special needs, and students from Savannah

Chatham County Public Schools. More than an art therapy exhibition, Marks is a celebration of art as an activity that has the power to heal and transform lives. This special celebration will include a free family day; a colorful, thought-provoking exhibition; and a stirring opening program of readings by Marks participants and special guests, followed by a light reception. Americans joined their European cousins in revolting against the rationality of the eighteenth-century in favor of emotional responses to experiences, as they expressed themselves through literature, music, and the visual arts. In conjunction with the Romantic Spirits exhibition, Early American historian Christopher E. Hendricks examines how this exciting age reshaped Savannah’s landscape, society, and architecture. Panhandle Slim Through January 2015Panhandle Slim paints flat, folksy cartoon-like renderings of public figures. He pairs these images with a quote from that person. Recently, he has been appropriating timeworn landscape paintings.

Growing the CollectionJohn Henry Twachtman’s atmospheric painting Mouth of the Seine has been a beloved part of Telfair’s permanent collection since 1942. Twachtman (1853-1902) wielded considerable influence in the world of American art, despite his relatively short life. In 1898, he helped to found the group of artists known as the Ten American Painters, which brought together the most important American Impressionist painters working at that time. He also founded the Cos Cob artist colony, one of the earliest and most important artist colonies in the United States.

Less well known than Twachtman’s paintings are his sensitively executed etchings. The end of the 19th century saw the dawn of the Etching Revival, and, like many of his fellow American Impressionist paint-ers, Twachtman embraced the medium of etching as an exciting new mode for original artistic expression. In some cases, he created etchings inspired by the compositions of his own paintings. Such is the case with the etching Mouth of the Seine, donated to Telfair Museums earlier this year by collectors Diane and Ervin Houston. Although Twachtman utilized his painting of the same name as a jumping off point for the composition of this etching, careful observation of the etching reveals that it is an interpretation of the paint-ing rather than a literal reproduction. Telfair Museums is honored to add this fine etching to its excellent collection of American prints.

Moving as a group, we will stop at three River Street locations and seek out opportunities to produce Port City-inspired sketches of the riverfront. We will conclude with a review of sketches.

Document Savannah’s River and Port with featured artist West Fraser, one of the leading American artists in the representational and plein air tradition. Fraser has built his career on richly painted, atmospheric vistas of cities, coasts, and landscapes throughout the U.S. and internationally—from the pristine Sea Islands of South Carolina and Georgia to the hill towns of Tuscany.

Complementing the exhibition Port City, Fraser conducts this painting workshop as an introduction to capturing the extraordinary environment of our river and port with oil or acrylic paint en plein air. Fraser focuses on work-ing quickly, entirely on location, making well-designed compositions with

emphasis on color and light. Through demonstrations, Fraser shows how to reduce a complex scene to its essence and how to use unified shapes to create a center of interest with strong composition, contrast, and color.

Each student has the opportunity to produce a small work on panel in oil or acrylic paint. The class meets Friday at 4 pm at the Jepson Center to take a personal tour of the Port City exhibition and participate in preliminary preparations and discussion. We meet Saturday morning at 7:30 am on the waterfront, just past the Trustees Garden. There, West Fraser leads a brief discussion of color, composition, and value. Then students set up in a loose group formation to work on individual paintings. On Sunday at 7:30 am, we meet on the grounds of Fort Pulaski. West provides individual mentorship Sunday as students work on their paintings.

Telfair Museums is excited to introduce its newest program, open to our youngest visitors. Join us for a monthly gathering where parents and caregivers can enjoy a morning at the museum while also engaging infants with art. Babies thrive on dynamic environments, so we’ll explore a different set of artwork each month in a gallery all to ourselves. There will be board books for the little ones afterward and adult conver-sation for you and like-minded art lovers. Finish your visit with a leisurely talk over complimentary coffee and tea in our café. Strollers, crying, and older siblings are all welcome here!

September 18: Water, Water Everywhere — In Savannah, water’s all around us. Join us as we look at paintings and photos of the Savannah River in Port City and explore what sinks or floats by creating your own sailboat.

October 16: Dress Up, Dress Down —There are all sorts of reasons to play dress up: holidays, festivals, or just for fun. Come dance and move with costumes as we learn about masks and clothing from around the world in the ArtZeum, and make your own special headdress.

November 20: Sense Intense — You can discover art with all of your senses, not just sight. Explore sound and smell with Deep River and activate your sense of touch in Savannah Collects. Then use your own hands to create multi-media sculptures.

December 18: Silver and Gold — These shiny metals aren’t just for jewelry. Take a walk with us to explore the various metals and materials used in sculptures around the museum. Then you‘ll create your own modified brass rubbings in silver and gold.

DocentsAre you interested in becoming a docent? Training begins in September and we hope to see you there! Docents are volunteers who inform visitors how to better appreciate and understand Telfair Museums’ architecture, permanent collection, and traveling exhibitions. Docents work in both the Telfair Academy and the Jepson Center for the Arts, leading tours and assisting with educational programs for visitors of all ages and backgrounds.

Becoming a docent allows you to enrich your own understanding of the visual arts while serving your community by sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm with others. Docents receive special training from curators and artists with each new exhibit the Telfair hosts.

Mark your Calendar for PULSE 2015 Telfair’s PULSE Art + Technology Festival will be back starting January 21, 2015 with another amazing lineup of creative technology and interactive design. Try your hand at virtual reality by taking a spin on Globacore’s bicycle-driven game, using the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset. Become proficient in 3D printing at a PULSE workshop. You also will want to see renowned artist Miwa Matreyek’s fascinating performance, which combines live action with animation!

Engage in PULSE during the week and don’t forget Free Family Day on the weekend. PULSE will cover the Jepson Center and feature a wild array of inventive tech that you can try yourself. PULSE has been recog-nized by the American Association of Art Museum Directors as a “Next Practice in Museum Education” case study. Best of all, most PULSE events are free admission!

150th Civil War AnniversaryTelfair commemorates the 150th anniversary of a key moment in Civil War history: the end of General Sherman’s “March to the Sea” and Union troops’ occupation of Savannah in December, 1864.

Film Screening Thursday, December 11, 6 pm / Free to members or with paid museum admission

Filmmaker Michael Jordan returns to Savannah for a special screening of his award-winning documentary, Savannah in the Civil War, in observance of the 150th anniversary of the taking of Savannah by Union troops. From Secession to Sherman's "March to the Sea," Savannah was the setting for countless scenes in our nation's bloodiest conflict. The stories told in the film involve new types of warships, battles on land and sea, black Savannahians fighting for their freedom, Union prisoners attempting to escape, and white Southerners mourning the loss of six Sunday school classmates in the first battle of the war. In this 90-minute film, numerous historic sites, countless rare images, and dozens of historians and actors help bring the war to life, from the home front to the front lines. Savannah in the Civil War won two prestigious bronze Telly Awards in 2014. After the screening, Michael Jordan will participate in Q&A discussion, and Telfair Museums will display a bronze sculpture of the figure on Savannah’s Confederate monument, created by artist David Richards in 1879.

Living History Program December 12, 13, and 14, 6 pm and 7 pm / Cost: $20 per adult/ $5 per child

Telfair Museums presents “The Eve of Occupation,” a new dramatic living history program interpreting the Union occupation of Savannah from the perspective of the Telfair household. From the beginning of the Civil War, Savannahians had viewed the conflict and its horrifying consequences as distant spectacles. On December 10, 1864, everything changed. Sixty thousand Union troops maneuvered on the outskirts of the city. Confederates, numbering only ten thousand, successfully retreated to Hardeeville. Lacking military defenses, on December 21, Mayor Richard Arnold made a plea for the peaceful surrender of the city: “…we… the people of Savannah… do hereby resolve that we seek to have peace by laying down our arms, and submitting to the national authority under the Constitution…laying aside all differences and burying by-gones in the grave of the past, we will use our best endeavors to bring back the prosperity and commerce we once enjoyed.”

Telfair Museums Receives Prestigious National Award: “Slavery and Freedom in Savannah” project wins Leadership in History prize Slavery and Freedom in Savannah, a multi-year project organized by Telfair Museums, encompassed a book, an exhibition, a three-day city symposium, and multiple community partnerships. In June, the project received the Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH). Called the Leadership in History Award, now in its 69th year, it is America’s most prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history. In making the announce-ment, AASLH said, “the winners represent the best in the field and provide leadership for the future of state and local history.”

Telfair began to reinterpret the history of the Owens-Thomas House with the preservation of the slave quarters in the mid-1990s. At that time, we began introducing visitors to a broader spectrum of its former inhabitants—white and black; men, women, and children; enslaved and free. Today, through our Mansion to Museum exhibition, we have expanded the story to include the inhabitants of the Telfair mansion, as well.

The Slavery and Freedom in Savannah project began with a three-day symposium in October 2011, featur-ing lectures and discussions with national and international scholars of U.S. and African American History. More than 500 people attended, and most of the information presented is included in the book and was featured in the exhibit.

“Although rural and plantation-based slavery are somewhat familiar to visitors to the south, urban slavery is rarely interpreted,” notes Tania Sammons, our Senior Curator of Decorative Arts and Historic Sites, who di-rects the project. “But as the book and exhibit point out, urban slavery was instrumental to the slave-based economy in Savannah and throughout North America. This part of the story has national significance and fills an important gap in our understanding of our collective American past.” Learn more at telfair.org/news.

Beginning October 13, original print portraits of Savannah-related figures will grace the wall of the upstairs room, prompting stories of the city’s founding. Prints include images of notables such as Savannah’s founding father General James Oglethorpe; Native Americans Tomochichi and his nephew Tooanahowi; and Selina Hastings, Countess of Huntingdon, patron of Bethesda Orphanage.

A Collectors’ Evening January 15, 2015, 6 pm / Telfair Academy / Presented by the Gari Melchers Collectors’ SocietySave the date! This is your chance to play curator for a night and influence Telfair Museums’ permanent collection. The evening will showcase our curators as they each present a work of art they wish to have added to the Telfair’s collection. Patrons will enjoy a seated dinner and cocktails, then cast secret ballots to determine Telfair Museums’ next acquisition, which is made possible by the evening’s proceeds. The night also will include a live auction, offering the opportunity to bid on fantastic art- and wine-related items and experiences.

The Telfair Art Fair is FREE and open to the public on Saturday and Sunday. This beloved outdoor event in the heart of Historic Savannah features 80 national and local artists set up around Telfair Square.

For the past 20 years, Art Fair has attracted thousands of Savannah’s visitors, area residents, and families. The Fair features a wide variety of original art for sale in a broad range of prices and media—offering something to suit every taste and budget. Participating artists are eligible for judging and have an opportunity to win $12,000 in cash awards, including the $5,000 Carolyn Luck McElveen Best of Show award. Proceeds from the Telfair Art Fair benefit Telfair Museums’ educational programs, exhibitions, and acquisitions. Join us throughout this fabulous weekend featuring great art, great friends, and great entertainment.
