It is important for all to be safe! Thank you for understanding! Connection & I Love You Rituals This month we proclaim our love and friendship for each other through cards, candies, toys and other trinkets as we celebrate Valentine's Day. Each card we send is an effort to let the recipient know we care about them, and it makes us feel loved and connected to that person. As human beings we crave connection with others. We have a need to belong and when we feel like we are connected we want the best for the other person and want to help them and love them. Connections have four components: eye contact, touch, being in the moment and playfulness. The more of these components we have in an encounter, the stronger the connection. When you greet your children after school with a hug, a kiss, a fist bump, ask about their day and really listen without looking down at the phone or answering a text while they are talking you are making a connection. Playing basketball with your older child and talking about whatever is on their mind, holding an infant and singing while gazing into her eyes or playing peek-a- boo is making a connection. Sitting next to your spouse and holding hands while talking about your day is making a connection. All of these are examples of making connections or I Love You Rituals. They are ways we strengthen the bonds with our loved ones to make them feel special and know that we love them. So on this month that we celebrate the love we have for our friends and family keep in mind that with each hug, fist bump, game you play or Valentine's Day card you give out, you are strengthening the bonds and connection you have with that person. Tell Me More About I Love You Rituals... Dr. Becky Bailey, founder of Conscious Discipline, coined the phrase, "I Love You Rituals". A ritual is a sequence of activities involving gestures, words, and objects, performed according to set sequence. So using this definition, Dr. Bailey created an entire book of I Love You Rituals that help build bonds of unconditional love, increase attention and decrease power struggles, encourage cooperation and caring and boost brain potential. I Love You Rituals can help busy families stay close, help children cope withchange and affirm the parent-child bond that protects children from violence andpeer pressure. (Taken from the book, I Love You Rituals, by Dr. Becky A. Bailey, Ph. D.).

Dr. Bailey has taken several of the nursery rhymes we are familiar with from ourchildhood and reworked them and added gestures to help create fun, playfulmoments to build connections. Most are specifically targeted for children 0-7, butas we discussed earlier, for older children an I Love You Ritual can be a specialhandshake, playing a game or a simple hug. Also, don't worry about the specificgesture, make up your own and make it your own!

Here are a couple I Love Rituals to try with your children:
