From the Principal
Year 12’s graduation was a special day. I reminded them that it was the last formal assembly before HSC in hall on Thursday 17 October 2019 (9.50) but get to school by 9.00am! At their first assembly in 2014 I told them that they had 1150 days of High School ahead of them and that it would pass very quickly. I was right. We reminisced, with pictures, stories, words of encouragement and addresses from students and Year Advisor. They heard the wonderful talents of our musicians including Soren who can play Rachmaninov virtually one handed and Jasmine, who’s violin performance has gained her a nomination for Encore, the showcase of the best HSC performances in the state.
Year 12 in their final year have set the school tone as good role models. They have, in the main, displayed exemplary attitude to study, friendship, work ethic and leadership.
I know the difficult journeys that some of them have had and the vast challenges they have had to overcome and I am proud to see the strength and resilience they have developed as a result.
Congratulations to this years’ Year 12 leaders Sebastian, Joanne, Harvey, Raiyaan, Priscilla and Harry. They have upheld a high standard and have achieved excellent results for the whole school.
I’d like to pay tribute to the families and carers of the class of 2019. I know that bringing up teenagers is not easy. Your support, advice, guidance and love have been key to our students reaching graduation. The parental support of year 12’s this year has been sensational. The bus project has helped our students feel that they are known, valued and cared for. They have been bombarded with sushi, care packages, breakfast and endless iterations of “You got this” Our parents of year 12 have stayed the course guided their charges to graduation. Staff have exhibited hard work, commitment, and instilled a desire to succeed and achieve PB’s – a special thanks to Deborah Davidson for her relentless efforts on the behalf of the class of 2019. Over the next few weeks it will be vital for year 12 to rest, exercise, sleep, eat well and organise study programs. Remember the lessons taught by Elevate! The HSC results will be out on Tuesday 17 December and Pancake Day will be on Thursday 19 December. I look forward to celebrating their success then. The HSC is a milestone in life. It’s a turning point, not an end point. It’s the stepping off point for your next set of decisions which might be to study at University or TAFE or to enter the workforce. Whatever they decide, there are so many exciting possibilities. Education can open doors to opportunities. By completing their HSC they are giving themselves more options in life.

As we live we should strive to be the best person we can be and add something to the lives of others. We should always leave a place better than we found it and our focus should be on doing our personal best in the moment we are living. Finally I will repeat the advice I gave them at the first assembly in 2014: Clever is good but kind is better. People may not remember what you say or do, but they will always remember how you made them feel. Year 12 you have made me feel that my efforts in leading our school have been worth it and I wish year 12 every success, personally and professionally in the future. The current year 12 have recorded so many Gold awards that we have had to introduce a new level on our Merit System. The following students received a Platinum Award at their Graduation Assembly for gaining 3 or more Gold awards during their time at Tempe High School.

REL. DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Term 4 Homework Club Trial In order to help our students prepare for their final assessments and help them clarify any areas they are struggling in or work they may have missed a home work club will be running Tuesday’s term 4. This will be a trial and its success is dependent on the number of students who take advantage of this opportunity. If successful there is the possibility the homework club will run over 2020. The Homework Club to be run on Tuesdays for weeks 1 and 2 as well as weeks 4 to 6 inclusive. There will be NO homework club week 3 or weeks 7, 8, 9 or 10. The homework club will be staffed by a minimum of three Tempe High School Teachers. I would encourage any students who are struggling to prepare for their assessments or do not understand a subject to come to homework club and get professional help from qualified teachers. Tempe High School 2020 Whole School BYOD Program Bring your own device (BYOD) is a system where students bring a computing device to school which they can connect to the Tempe High network. This enables them to access cloud based programs such as Google Suite, Google Classroom and Microsoft 365 in the classroom by logging in through their Education department portal. It will be expected that in 2020 all Tempe High School students will bring a computing device to school for learning. To enable students to operate their device utilising the THS Wifi network, students and parents are to sign and return a THS BYOD Agreement form and it is strongly encouraged that that students and parents first read the THS BYOD Policy before signing the BYOD agreement form. The Tempe High School BYOD policy and THS BYOD Agreement form can be found on school the website or at: THS BYOD Policy- http://bit.ly/THSBYODpolicy THS BYOD Agreement form- http://bit.ly/ THSBYODagree The following procedures are to be administered to improve the 2020 whole school transition to BYOD: Year 7 to undertake digital citizenship lessons as part of the new PDHPE syllabus Year 7 & 8 to take part in a cyber safety workshop in Term 4 Years 8 & 10 have received and returned signed BYOD Agreement forms Year 7 to be issued with BYOD Agreement forms in Term 4 THS Staff have taken part in training to implement devices as a learning tool in the classroom. This innovation is a big change for all members of our school community, if you have any concerns regarding BYOD please contact the school. Mr C Newton Communication & Technology Co-ordinator
Study Skills On the 31st November, Year 11 students will participate in an Elevate Education study skills workshop. The workshop is focused upon time management practices, designed to equip Year 11 with the strategies and skills to enhance their academic achievement within their HSC studies. Our study skills partners Elevate Education have been associated with Tempe High since 2017, delivering in-school workshops that provide our students with effective and practical study strategies to improve confidence and results with examinations. Elevate Education worked with Tempe High School earlier in the 2019 school year, delivering face to face workshops with Years 7 and 10. Elevate Education enable our student’s exclusive access to their Elevate Student Portal which includes features of video tips, study skills templates, practice exam questions and written tips. To complement your child’s study skills practices, the Teachers of Tempe High are committed to facilitating study skills techniques to students and consistently apply these practices across all subject areas. I would implore parents and caregivers to inquire with their child about the Study Skills practices and techniques that have been delivered by their teachers and Elevate Education. Students and parents are welcome to view the Elevate Education student portal which can be accessed via https://au.elevateeducation.com/ Tempe High School (presenters) password: rondo

MOCK TRIAL – Part 2
As we moved into Term Three, our Mock Trial Team’s dedication and preparation did not waiver. The team continued successfully, competing against some amazing schools in complicated Civil and Criminal cases. Round 4 saw us take on St Ursula’s College in a criminal case where a house had been purposely burnt to the ground. In Round 5, we managed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant had committed internet fraud. By making it into Round 6, the Tempe High School Mock Trial Team had established themselves as one of the top 32 schools in the state. Our Round 6 competition was incredibly tough and we found ourselves competing against Saint Sabina College, in a Civil Case. We won our case, securing damages for our victim in a vicious dog attack – however, we lost the round by just a few points. Our Mock Trial Team have learnt a tremendous amount over the last 6 months and had a wonderful time competing in the 2019 NSW Law Society Mock Trial Competition. A special thanks to Mr Dassaklis and all the teachers, parents, solicitors and barristers who supported us in preparing for each of our cases.

Mock Trial starts up again early in February 2020 and next year we’re aiming to make it even further!
As such, we will be running a training and mentoring program in Term 4 this year. Further information will be posted in Daily Notices in Sentral - stay tuned Ms T Eagan—HSIE Teacher

TAS FACULTY Tempe Public School Technology Day
Students from Tempe Public School visited in week 10 to experience how technology is used in the high school engineering classroom as a part of their Positive Behaviour for Learning Program. 100 students had a hands-on experience with year 10 engineering propeller cars where we learned about 3D printing and other forms of digital manufacturing used in Tempe High School classrooms. Primary school students chose a propeller car made by year 10 students and raced each other in a test scenario, with students from stages one, two and three learning basic principles around mass, energy, engineering structures and aerodynamics. These young students were highly engaged and displayed outstanding curiosity and enthusiasm in learning about the applications of technology in engineering. Mr A Greene—TAS Teacher

The gold medal game was a tough one. It was so evenly matched. Our boys lost the first set but rallied back and took the second. The deciding set unfortunately went Hills Grammar's way, but there was certainly no shame in how well our guys played. A silver medal for the under 16’s and I am super proud of their effort. Onwards and upwards Tempe, we will continue in our quest for gold. Special mention to Kevin in his leadership role and Richson for his amazing saves. Ms D Bolton—PDHPE Teacher
PDHPE FACULTY Volleyball Schools Cup: Term 3 On Saturday the 7th and Sunday the 8th of September, our volleyball teams made their way to Sydney Olympic Park to play in the Volleyball Schools Cup. Once again, the competition was fierce and our students had to fight for every point. The dedication from these players to give up their entire weekend and arrive early in the morning and play into the early evening is impressive. The under 15’s boys played in their very first competition. They were enthusiastic in their approach and managed to win a match against Baulkham Hills. Although they put in a huge effort, they didn’t go through to medals rounds but learnt a lot from the experience. With their enthusiasm and dedicated approach to training, they will soon be challenging the best teams in the competition. Special mention to Zack Cui and Narin Tun who played extremely well in their first competition. Our girls under 16’s team had their very best competition so far. They were extremely competitive and worked really well as a group. They managed to come within four points of playing for medals, which is a huge improvement from previous comps. The team spirit with the girls was contagious and many spectators were soon watching their game just because of the way they approached the game. Hopefully next comp we will continue to push through and keep winning these matches. I can honestly say, I was so proud of the girls and the way they played during this comp. Well done girls! Special mention to Amy Zhong who was outstanding and Angela Nguyen who returned some amazing shots in her first competition. Our final team was the under 16’s boys. What a team. The pure talent in this team is incredible. They rarely let a ball hit the ground and would sacrifice their hips, elbows and knees to dive, slide and collect anything that was going to lose them a point. The comp was so evenly matched and nothing was easy to win. The boys came in second in their pool and had to play Blakehurst to see who went through to play in the gold medal game. With two state players on their team, it should have been an extremely hard match for us. But the boys went to another level. They were doing the impossible and their team spirit was too hard to break. They won convincingly and had to play Hills Grammar for a chance at the gold.

PDHPE FACULTY (cont.) Bligh Zone Open’s Oz Tag Competition The inaugural Bligh Zone Oz Tag competition was held on Wednesday 21st August. Tempe High School entered teams in both the Open Girls and Open Boys divisions. The Open Girls won through their preliminary pool after playing a grueling number of matches. Our girls successfully progressed to the Semi-finals but were narrowly defeated. The Tempe Open Boys team were undefeated throughout the preliminary competition rounds and were highly touted to take out the competition. Alas, in blustery conditions and conceding 3 early tries to their opposition, the team suffered a close loss in their Grand Final. An amazing effort from both teams, with the Girls finishing the competition in 3rd place and the Boys being Runners Up, both team should be congratulated for their competitive spirit and sportsmanship they displayed. PDHPE FACULTY (cont.) Year 9 PASS Golf Excursion As part of their studies into the biomechanics of Golf, Year 9 PASS had an excursion to the Tempe Golf Driving Range. It was a bitterly cold and windy day, but the class were troopers and got on with business regardless.
Inspired by the golfing prowess of our instructor, we soon started to challenge ourselves to hit targets and out drive the players next to us. We had a lot of laughs and some of us found our natural golf drive.
As part of their assessment, year 9 had to film and analyse their golf swing, and for some, this was a skill that needed a lot of analysis!
We look forward to where our studies will take this sporty little group in the future. Special mention to Adem Oktar and Sasha Kayastha who really made their impact on the golfing range. Ms D Bolton—PDHPE Teacher NSW Table Tennis All Schools Competition The NSW Table Tennis Associations All School Boys competition was held on 26th August, with the event drawing State & Independent schools from across wider Sydney. Tempe High School entered 5 teams who were highly competitive within their singles and doubles pooled matches and proudly represented our school. Of special mention were Joshua Dinkin and Fahim Chowdhury successfully making the quarterfinals of the competition. The competition afforded our players a platform to display the skills, refined in their training with Joe Qiao. Tempe High School has been fortunate to acquire the services of Table Tennis Coach Joe Qiao. Joe’s extensive coaching repertoire extends to elite State and National players. In 2019, Joe offered his services to THS, working after school with interested and talented THS students to improve Table Tennis play. If your child has an interest in Table Tennis and would like to improve their Table Tennis game play, please contact Mr Newton for details regarding table tennis coaching. Mr C Newton—PDHPE Teacher

PDHPE FACULTY (cont.) Grand Finals—Winter Sport On Tuesday 24th September, four of our year 7 and 8 sporting teams played their grand-finals for winter sport. It was an amazing day with some incredible results. A special mention to girls netball and girls volleyball for taking out the title, and finishing first on the ladder also. Boys basketball and boys soccer unfortunately fell short in the final, but still should be commended on their efforts. Read below for some special mentions at each sport:
Girls Netball – I am super proud of these girls. At half time they were down by 5, looking somewhat defeated and frustrated. With some encouragement and tactical advice, the girls came back fighting to win the game 16-15 against Strathfield Girls. A huge congratulations to them all – a special mention to Julie Le and Natalie Sharari for their extra stand out performance!
Girls Volleyball – finishing at the top of the table, there was no doubt these girls played extremely well through out the whole competition. Both Tempe High teams faced off in the final, with Tempe 1 defeating Tempe 2. Well done to all the girls for playing so well throughout the tournament.
Boys Basketball – this game against Leichhardt High was always proven to be a tough game. Our boys were down by 11 at half time, and fought back to only just escape the victory by one basket. A huge effort for their fighting spirit!!
Boys Soccer – another close game in this final for Tempe who came up against Marrickville High. It was a challenging game, and the boys unfortunately went down 2-0. A special mention to some stand out players – Miles, Hassan, Jawad & Oscar! Well done. Well done to all involved! I, along with the rest of your coaches, are super proud of your effort. Well done!
