What patterns do you find in the day and night length data for Endicott?

Now that you know about Endicott’s days and nights throughout the year…

• Do all places on Earth have the same lengths of day and night?

• Do all places on Earth experience the same seasons at the same time?

• Next Lab will let us explore places around the world to find this answer.

Page 9: TEMPERATURE TILT VEGETATION EARTH ORBIT DAY & … Length for web3.pdfSUN’s INTENSITY SUN’s PATH in SKY EARTH ORBIT ... Close to the equator (lower latitudes), the range in day/nights

Endicott is typical for a mid latitude city in North America.

Why do the lengths of the days and night change throughout the year?

Notebook SummaryLab - Day and Night in Endicott

• Draw something to help you remember what you did

• Summarize (bullets) the absolute necessities of what you should have learned from this lab activity

You understand both military and clock time formats

You can calculate differences in time

You can create complete graphs and check them for accuracy

You know how to evaluate direct, inverse, cycle, and independent relations between variables

You know the range in dates for the start of each season and whether it’s a solstice or an equinox

Relative length of the day and night for each equinox and solstice

Page 11: TEMPERATURE TILT VEGETATION EARTH ORBIT DAY & … Length for web3.pdfSUN’s INTENSITY SUN’s PATH in SKY EARTH ORBIT ... Close to the equator (lower latitudes), the range in day/nights

What did you learn about day (and night) length at

different latitudes?

Page 12: TEMPERATURE TILT VEGETATION EARTH ORBIT DAY & … Length for web3.pdfSUN’s INTENSITY SUN’s PATH in SKY EARTH ORBIT ... Close to the equator (lower latitudes), the range in day/nights

What did you find out about the relationship between day lengths and latitudes?

Range of Day Length is greatest near the Poles (0-24 hrs) at latitudes above the Polar circles

Range of Day Length is lowest near the equator (always close to 12 hrs)

Range of Day Length is greatest near the Poles (0-24 hrs) at latitudes above the Polar circles

The latitude of the Tropics and Polar Circles are related to the tilt of the Earth.

Tilt = 23.5o so the Tropics are 23.5o away from the equator and the Polar Circles are 23.5o away from the Poles!

Notebook SummaryDay Lengths Around the World

Everyplace on Earth has about 12 hours of day & night on the equinoxes.

Everyplace on Earth receives the same amount of daylight hours.

The closer to the Poles (higher latitudes), the more extreme the changes in day/night length. From 66-90o you have 0-24 hours of day or night on the solstices.

Close to the equator (lower latitudes), the range in day/nights lengths is very small and is close to 12

The opposite day/night lengths occur in the N & S hemispheres at the same time.

The opposite seasons occur in the N & S hemispheres at the same time.

What’s it all about?

SEASONS have different solar conditions!
