The Mountain and the Cliff
Erev tov v`shanah tovah - Welcome to 577NINE!
Now, it’s not my practice to give a sermon per se on Erev Rosh Hashanah. Instead, I like to share just a story. A story that I hope will inspire us as we begin these High Holy days. I keep a file of stories, and the one I choose for this year is an old folk tale from David Holtz. Here it is:
Once upon a time, there lived a man and his young son. The man was a merchant who once each month would bring out his sturdy wagon, load it up with goods, hitch his horse to the wagon, and head off on a trip to sell his goods to the people living in other towns. And when he went on these trips, his son always went along.
The town in which he and his family lived was nestled in a beautiful valley, surrounded by tall mountains. And to get to any other town, you had to cross the mountains. The only road out of the valley wound up and around the tallest
of the mountains, and it was just barely wide enough for the horse and the wagon. And as the man and his young son rode up and around, they always had the mountain on one side of the road and a steep cliff on the other.
On this particular day, their trip started out like any other; they followed the only road out of the valley, as it wound up and around the mountain.
It was almost noon when they came to the top of the mountain, where the road turned to begin winding back down the other side. And there, at the very highest point, the horse sud-denly stopped! The father and son looked ahead and saw in front of them a tremendous pile of rocks, which had rolled off the top of the mountain, right into the middle of the road totally blocking the road. It seemed as though they would have to go back.
But the boy turned and said quickly, “Don’t worry father, I’ll get rid of all those rocks, and then we’ll be on our way.” And with that he jumped down from the wagon and began to

Change is in the air. The seasons are changing, we are celebrating a new year, and TBAY is continually evolving. Here are some highlights of the past few months.
The first step in the much-needed building repairs is completed. HVAC replacement took about 6 weeks and is finally finished. Thank you to the staff for their understand-ing and patience while the work was being done. The next phase is replacing our roof. This will take place during the next two to three months.
Our new splash pad was a great addition to camp. The children had a wonderful sum-mer and loved getting wet on the splash pad with the duck, mushroom and ladybug. The campers also had a new fenced in ar-ea to play in. If you haven't seen the new play area, take a ride around the back of the building for a peek. Thanks to Andy Schuyler, Tracey Shenker and the estate of Jack Hager for making this project a reality. Our Early Childhood Program continues to thrive under the leadership of Sandi New-man and management of Tracey Shenker. As of the writing of this article, there are 80 children enrolled for 2018-2019.
At our annual summer BBQ in August, though we missed the band and the rain kept us inside, we had a great showing under the coordination of Andrea and
Glenn Wohl and Sue and Mariano Blanco.
As you have read, on the second day of Rosh Hashanah we will experiment with a new format. The parallel service will join the "main" service in the sanctuary. There will be no organ accompaniment and our choir will sing a capella with our guest can-tor, Larry Indik. The Religious Affairs Com-mittee will survey congregants after the holidays to evaluate the experimental ser-vice to determine if it is something that we would want to continue in the future.
Our Shorashim program has a new interim director, Elissa Gorkowitz. We are thrilled about this transition and we look forward to her energy, enthusiasm and love for the kids.
We’re looking forward to seeing you at the many new and exciting programs coming up this year. If you have any comments or suggestions or would like to get involved at TBAY, please contact us at [email protected].
We wish you all a Shana Tova and we look forward to an exciting and fulfilling year ahead.

work. He pushed rocks, he pulled rocks, he rolled rocks over the cliff. He worked for two hours, and when he was done all of the rocks were gone – except one. After all the boy’s hard work, the biggest rock, the one that had been at the bottom of the pile, was still sitting in the middle of the road. No matter how much he tried, he could not move it. And even though he had been at it for two hours, and even though he had removed every other rock, they were still stuck. For with the large rock in the center of the road, and the mountain on one side and the cliff on the other, the horse and wagon still couldn’t get past.
The boy walked wearily back to the wagon, wiping his arm across his forehead. He looked up and said, “I’m sorry father, but I can’t move that last rock, and we can’t get around it. I’m afraid we’ll have to go back.”
His father looked down and asked, “Have you really done eve-rything you could?” Surprised by the question, the boy thought for a moment. Then his face lit up with inspiration, and he ran to the back of the wagon and got out a long piece of cloth, for they sold fabric. He went to the rock, wrapped the cloth around it, took a deep breath, and began to pull. He pulled until his muscles bulged, but the rock didn’t budge.
Disappointed, he walked back, slumped against the wagon, and said, “I’m sorry father, it’s no use. We’ll have to go back.” His father tilted his head to one side as he looked at his son and asked again, “Have you really done everything you
could?” Time after time the boy tried to move the boulder, but the rock didn’t budge. He stared at the rock for a moment more, then turned slowly and trudged back to the wagon. Once more he said: “I’m sorry father, I just can’t move that rock. We’ll have to go back.” And once again his father looked at him and asked, “Have you really done everything you could?” This time the boy got angry. “Yes! Yes I have! I have been pushing and pulling and rolling and throwing rocks for hours and I really have done everything I could!”
His father shook his head, and said quietly, “No, you haven’t, because you haven’t asked me to help you.” With that he climbed down from the wagon, and then he and his son walked to the rock. Together, they rolled it off the road and over the cliff. Then they climbed onto the wagon, and with a soft cluck of the father’s tongue and a gentle shake of the reins, they were on their way.
That, my friends, is the story called “The Mountain and the Cliff.” I have been thinking about this story a great deal be-cause I believe that it speaks volumes about how cooperation and perseverance can influence results positively and effec-tively. When we work together and use all the resources at our disposal, we are more likely to succeed than if we try to shoul-der the burden ourselves. There is strength in numbers, and we can do collectively what we can’t even dream of doing as individuals. And, when we work together as a community, we can overcome so many obstacles.

Did You Know TBAY Has an Endowment?
Though it doesn’t compare to the lofty endowments boast-ed by many universities and other non-profits, Temple Beth Ahm Yisrael does indeed have an endowment, with total assets of about $432,000 at June 30, 2018. As approved by the Board of Directors, these funds are mainly invested with the Jewish Community Foundation, split 50/50 be-tween their Equity and Fixed Income investment pools. The return for the fiscal year ending June 30 was approxi-mately 4.6%.
TBAY’s Endowment comprises several sub-accounts, some of which may be familiar to you: the Holocaust Edu-cation Fund supports the Holocaust Garden and Holocaust related programs; the Education Fund supports the Reli-gious School; and the Bross Scholarship Fund provides Hebrew High School scholarships. A portion of Rabbi Mal-lach’s Discretionary Fund is also a component of the En-dowment.
Yet another important component is the Unrestricted ac-count, meaning it has no specific purpose or restriction at-tached (as compared to the funds mentioned above). As this account grows, through donations, bequests (e.g. Leg-acy Society) and earnings, some portion could be used to fund Temple operations or for emergencies, as determined by the Board.
Since the Holocaust Education Fund is already well funded thanks to generous past donations, please consider the Unrestricted Endowment account, or any of the other en-dowment funds, when making additional donations to TBAY. Also consider joining the Legacy Society if you have not yet done so. See more info here: http://tbaynj.org/index.php?src=gendocs&ref=CreateaJewishLegacy&category=Main
Please feel free to contact me with any questions about our Endowment.

UNION COUNTY SENIOR SERVICES PRESENTATION
Thursday, September 13 – 11:00 am
Union County offers various programs available to senior citizens. The Springfield Seniors Club has a community presentation on Thursday, September 13 at 11:00 am at the Chisholm Center, 100 South Springfield Avenue, Springfield. A representative from the Union County Divi-sion on Aging will outline the services available through the many agencies that comprise this Division.
A light lunch is provided. All are invited to attend. It will be an opportunity for seniors, their family members and care-givers to learn about the resources offered by the county. Please call the Rec Department at 973-912-2227 or stop in to make a reservation.
The L’Dor VaDor campaign will close this calendar year 2018, after 6 years of dedicated, committed, successful teamwork toward our goal of $1,300,000. Our current pledges total $1,186,000 and loan indebtedness has been reduced from $1.69M at the start of the campaign to $284K. We plan to complete final gift closings by year-end, with a strong probability of reaching our aggressive goal. We will also focus on assuring all pledges are up to date and completed.
Our improved creditworthiness has enabled securing a favorable Capital Expense commercial loan to allow over-due and seriously needed renovation and replacements to our HVAC systems, roofing, and parking lot.
140 families have committed to the campaign - if you have not yet made a pledge, please do so by contacting Andy or David. Be a part of our success - Honoring Our Past, Securing Our Future. We will update the LDVD Wall of Recognition in the main lobby and LDVD plaque in the gallery entry upon closure of the campaign. We will also begin the location dedications for those donors who quali-fy and wish to do so.

YOM KIPPUR MINCHA & COMMUNITY YIZKOR
NEILAH TOP 10 LIST
MAKE A LULAV SHAKE
VODKA, A PICKLE & A SHTICKEL OF PUMPERNICKEL
HATAN V`KALLAT HATORAH 5779
What do the items listed above have in common? Almost all (except for the YOM KIPPUR MINCHA & COMMUNITY YIZKOR – see below) are catchy titles of programs designed to encourage congregants to increase their level of ritual participation in synagogue life over the High Holy Days. The specific holidays targeted by these titles are Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Simchat Torah, respectively. ______________________________________________________________________________________________
Sneak Into Shul On Yom Kippur the Torah teaches that we are to “afflict our souls.” Thus, the prohibitions against eating and drinking, bathing beyond basic hygiene, and conjugal relations. In addition, we are not to wear leather-soled shoes. Leather shoes, once only custom made, were considered a sign of luxury. Therefore, in order to humble ourselves before God, to afflict our mortal souls, we do not put on the soles of our feet leather shoes. Originally, the intent was to come to services on Yom Kippur in one’s stocking feet. For many reasons this is not practical or safe. The modern alterna-tive has become to wear canvas athletic footwear on Yom Kippur – i.e. sneakers, hence, Sneak Into Shul.
Yom Kippur Minha & Community Yizkor Again this year, as a service to our community, we will offer a Community Yizkor service as part of Yom Kippur. It will take place during the Minha (afternoon) service of Yom Kippur, Wednesday, September 19, 2018, at 4:45 PM. Please note the following about this service: It will NOT be the same Yizkor service recited earlier in the day for our Temple membership, which is the special Yiz-kor service found in our Yizkor booklets. A separate Community Yizkor Service ticket is required by non-members to attend this service. (Members continue to use their member tickets for Mincha.) These Community Yizkor tickets must be obtained from the Temple office in advance. If you know of someone out there that might be interested in such a ticket, please have them contact the office

Welcome to another wonderful fun-
filled year at the Early Childhood Pro-gram. As we prepare for the new school year, the teachers have been busy cleaning their classrooms, deco-rating the bulletin boards and planning for the children to return. We cannot wait to welcome the children back and
say hello to our new friends and families. Together, we’ll provide a positive and nurturing environment where the children can learn and grow as they explore and discover the world around them. Together we are partners in creat-ing a stimulating curriculum that encourages the children to learn and develop at their own pace. I know we will provide the best learning experience possible for all our children.
September is a very busy month. We will explore new classrooms, new friends, new routines and new teachers. The children will learn about Rosh Hashanah, apples, and so much more. I am sure everyone will have so much fun exploring these themes.
If your child is coming to preschool for the very first time, it is always good to prepare your child for what to expect at
school. Here are some helpful hints to get your child ready for the first day of school.
• Give your child a sense of what to expect. Visit the class-room to meet the teacher. Read some stories about the first day of school. • Come up with a good-bye ritual. Let your child know that you will be back to get him/her very soon. • Practice listening skills. Start asking your child to do a series of things, such as take his/her shoes to his/her room and put them in the closet, or to go to the bathroom and wash his/her hands, then come and help you set the dinner table. • Read to your child every day. Read about coming to pre-school • Use pretend play to explore the idea of preschool.

On behalf of the staff at the ECP, I wish you a happy and healthy new year.

WITH OUR MEMBERS CC..
Isabell Adler, a dedicated member of our congregation, was awarded an Honor-ary Fellowship from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem last June at a ceremony in Israel. She was recognized for being a consistent generous benefactor of the Uni-versity, making her first donation in memory of her son Lee who died on 9/11. The Isabell Adler Endowed Scholarship Fund educates international graduate stu-dents, especially from emerging countries. The Adler name is inscribed on the He-brew University’s Wall of Life as a testa-ment to the family’s commitment to the University. She was joined at the ceremo-ny by many of her family members as well as by Rabbi and Genya Mallach, who were visiting in Israel. Mazal Tov, Isabell! We are proud to call you one of ours! May you continue your many philanthropic pursuits in good health!
Please join us to commemorate Kristalnacht on Friday, November 9 at 8:00 pm. We are honored to have a Survivor, Peter Engler, speak about his own experience.
Peter Engler was born in Berlin. His family fled Nazi Germany and found sanctuary in Shanghai. As he was very young, he did not realize how primi-tive life was for refugees in Shanghai. His parents worked and lived rela-tively well, under the terrible circumstances. Peter went to school there and endured the Allied bombings. When the war ended, the family left for Pal-estine and then made their way to Canada and eventually the USA, where Peter continued his education, earning advanced degrees. A medical re-searcher, he is a Professor Emeritus of the New Jersey Institute of Tech-nology. He is married and the father of two sons and is active in Holocaust education.
Oneg Shabbat will follow services and Kristalnacht commemoration.
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to me.

Thank you to the many members of the congregation who brought comfort to me following the death of my husband: those who visited, who assisted at the shiva, who made donations, sent tributes and planted trees. Your friendship has helped me during this period.

This fall Women’s League is looking forward to a sociable, fun and productive beginning of a new year. We are planning many exciting ac-tivities to attract new members, including a talk and discussion, “The Nine Personality Types
According to Numerology,” “Autumn in The Sukkah” with wine and cheese, Girls Night Out at Chocolate Works, our Annual Paid Up Membership Dinner and Vendor Fair, and a Hanukkah party (featuring vodka, latkes and a grab bag).
We are interested in drawing women of all ages to help us develop programs that will enhance and support our TBAY community. If you would like to get involved, contact Jane Lakritz at 201-826-8930 or Susan Teller at 908-233-0092.
Please participate in our gift card program, which is a great
way to raise money for the Temple, and an easy way to earn donor credit. Gift cards for supermarkets and many other retail stores can be purchased through the Temple office, or by contacting Lynn Haliczer at 973-943-7611 or Irene Goldie-Petras at 908-578-0935.
Also, please visit the Women’s League gift shop off the Temple main lobby. The Temple office staff can help you with any purchase.
Thank you for your interest in Women’s League!

We’re pleased to report that we produced another successful Ad Calendar. Our thanks go to all of our members who solicited ads
and sent in their personal greetings, memorials and listings. We also appreciate the generous support of the many community businesses and professionals who participated.
Pick up your calendar on Monday, September 10, after Rosh Hashanah ser-vices in the lobby as you are leaving the Temple. We hope you will find it useful throughout the year. Please patronize our advertisers and tell them you saw their ad in the TBAY Women’s League calendar!
