Dear Friends, I find it a strange coincidence that we Jews have a festival, Purim, around the same time that

much of the world celebrates Mardi Gras. As a reminder, as much as we Jews love to get into the spirit of “fat Tuesday,” its roots are in the Christian calendar. It is the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent.

Two very different faiths have a day in the late winter – early spring built on levity and celebration. Overindulgence in drink, partying, wearing masks, and general rowdiness are tolerated in a way that these very serious faiths would not tolerate any other time of year. It is almost as if those of us who take religion seriously need a day of pure celebration, a joyous time to party. And I believe that it is not mere coincidence that the day falls this time of year, when the first signs of rebirth and spring are coming. I have not studied the religious calendar of other faiths, but I would not be surprised if they include similar celebrations.

Religion exists to meet some deep seated human needs. We humans need a connection to some greater purpose. We need a community and we need ritual. We need “a time to mourn and a time to dance,” to quote the book of Ecclesiastes. We need answers to the most fundamental questions of life – why am I here, what happens when I die, what is the right thing to do on this earth? And sometimes, we need to put aside the seriousness and allow levity to take over. We Jews need a Jewish carnival. That is why we need Purim.

Some people have written that if religion is here to meet human needs, then religion must be a human invention. Some very fine philosophers and thinkers are pushing an atheist agenda. “All religions are alike. They must be here to meet some human needs. They are certainly not true. God is an invention of the human imagination that we no longer need in this scientific age.”

I respectfully disagree. I love C.S. Lewis’s thought that the universe was designed in a way that there is something out there to meet human needs. Humans thirst and so there is water. Humans hunger and so there is food. Humans have deep spiritual longings and so there is God and religion.

Religion in general is quite serious, dealing with ultimate questions. But one day a year, at least in the Jewish faith, we are allowed to go a little crazy. We hear the public reading of the book of Esther, making noise to erase Haman’s name (k’riat megillah). We send gifts of food to neighbors and friends (mishloach manot). We give to the poor (matanot l’eviyonim). We eat a special meal. (seudat Purim). And we are permitted to overindulge somewhat in alcohol until we cannot tell the difference between “blessed be Mordecai” and “cursed be Haman” (ad lo yada).

Come join us Saturday evening March 11 for our celebration of Purim. Have a joyous Purim.

Shalom,

Rabbi Michael Gold

A New Voice to Inspire Us

Please help me in welcoming our new Cantor, Jenna Kramarow. Cantor Kramarow was or-dained by the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City, and has served as Second Can-tor at Temple Beth El in West Palm Beach for the past two years. In her capacity there, she assisted in leading all of the Shabbat and holiday services, and also worked with their youth group. Cantor Kramarow brings passion, enthusiasm and a high skill set to our congregation.

Cantor Kramarow will be leading us in prayer on Friday evenings, Shabbat mornings, and all holidays. She will also tutor our Bar and Bat Mitzvah children, and work with our Hebrew

School and Early Childhood Center weekly.

I would like to thank those lay congregants who led services the past six months: Jerry Berkowitz, Nat Levine, Mindy Zimmerman, and Jacqui Montag. You all helped us in a time of need, and proved that our community can come together when faced with a challenge.

The positivity and excitement for Cantor Kramarow has been overwhelming. I urge you to attend on Friday evening or Shabbat morning if you have not done so already. A new voice is here to lead and inspire us.

On a completely separate note, our Membership Committee is in the process of creating a YouTube video to highlight the many activities and attributes of our synagogue. If you have photos of past events from over the years, please email them to [email protected] and help us make a great video!

Often I have prospective members come to my office, and ask about the congregation. They claim they want to join for the “Jewish Community”, a place where they can feel a fellowship with others, sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals. This is what they want their children to know. The community becomes your second family. Never did this definition of Temple life ring more true to me than over the past few weeks. As you know, my beloved husband, Amos, passed away on January 26. It is by far the hardest experience I have ever had to go through. Thankfully, I have this congregation. My community. I was amazed, and so very grateful for all of you who came to support us during the funeral and week of Shiva. To see so many caring

faces around me during the very hardest week of my life brought such comfort. My sons and I are so apprecia-tive of the support and outpouring of love and kind thoughts. Thank you for reinforcing that I am not taking this walk alone, for making me so aware that people care, and that they are there for me. This is a life change that I was not prepared for, and I am struggling with one day at a time. Walking into this building each day is source of comfort. I am greeted by smiling, concerned faces, asking how I am doing. I am able to share a bit, laugh a little about some silly memory of Amos, and then I can go to my desk and get lost in my work. I want to thank my coworkers. Supporting me, helping me, and working with me to keep this Temple moving and growing. The daily routine here keeps me going. I want to thank you all, for being my Jewish Community.

Thinking Out Loud: What is Education For? Often, when I ask what education is for, I am met with puzzled expressions of: “What do you mean?” After all, parents say that they want their children to be well-educated. As a parent, I stand with these fathers and mothers. Yet I ask: • What does good education look like? • What does “well” in “well-educated” mean? • Is a good grade given to a publicly-funded educational program indicative of a “well” program? • Does the ability of children to recite the alphabet indicate youngsters being “well-educated”? • What role does memorizing facts play in being “well-educated”?

In an era where information is so effortlessly accessible as it is just a quick mouse-click away, is the ability of children to recite back facts/data/information indicative of being “well-educated”? When parents were asked why they wanted their children to be “well-educated”, their most common response indicated wanting their children to be successful in life. Here, too, as a mother, I stand with these parents. How can one predict what would be needed when our children grow up to be adults? We have already learned that the work force is constantly changing, and the rapid advances in technology indicate that workers’ skills may not even be projected. We may not even fathom what will be required from our children when they become adults in the workforce. However, the one trait that distinguishes humans from traits of animals and from characteristics of machines, prevailed. The one element that has triumphed through the years is the human ability to think. It is not about what to think, but the ability to engage in complex higher-level thinking, and provide solutions/explanations to problems/challenges as they arise (some call it "creative thinking"). All agree that higher-level thinking empowers the individual to seek solutions, implement actions, and adjust accordingly. For educators, this higher-level thinking is commonly referred to as “executive function” (please note: it is beyond the scope of this reflection to explore “executive function” deeper.) Hence, “well-educated” includes the ability to engage in a complex thinking, and it goes far beyond than reciting/ bouncing facts back to the authoritarian adult in the room.

How can one teach another how to think? After completing Harvard’s Teaching for Understanding program and practicing what I learned, I recognize that conducting close observations and paying very close attention to what children do and say, along with providing them with ample opportunities to engage in first hand/ authentic explorations within their immediate environment, children demonstrate complex thinking that surpasses the memorization of facts. Slowing down, and asking questions like the following ones affords children ample opportunities to think creatively as well as to think about thinking: • What makes you say that? • What do you see and notice? • What’s another way to look at this? • How does this fit? • What are you curious about? • Where else have you seen something like this? • What is it like? What is it not like? • If you were to group these items, what would go together? Why? The Jewish religion encourages asking questions, and our culture shares many stories of debate and questioning: Abraham chal-lenged G-d about Sodom and Gomorrah, and due to being a stutterer, Moses tried to opt out from leading the Israelites out of Egypt, questioning why he was chosen for that role. But perhaps the greater significance in asking good questions indicates of a culture that holds deep values and functions on a higher ethical level. While I have a lot more to share about this topic, I will leave you with some food for thought: David Orr, an environmental educator reflected on a point that Elie Wiesel said in the Global Forum in Moscow in the 90s. Mr. Wiesel stated that “the designers and perpetrators of the Holocaust were the heirs of Kant and Goethe. In most respects the Germans were the best educated people on Earth, but their education did not serve as an adequate barrier to barbarity. What was wrong with their education? In Wiesel’s words: “It emphasized theories instead of values, concepts rather than human beings, abstraction rather than consciousness, answers instead of questions, ideology and efficiency rather than conscience.”I welcome your questions; spread the word about our ECC; we have room to grow!

From TuBishvat to Purim, and soon Passover, one holiday follows the other to remind us of God’s greatness. TuBishvat is the Jewish Harbor Day. During this day we are reminded of the beauty of creation. This year, our school together with the ECC and Youth Group families, celebrated God’s gift to us in a joined family program at the park. Families were engaged in planting activi-ties as well as fun family games. We enjoyed nature as it was given to us by God; a precious gift we are obligated to take good care of. Purim is a day where we commemorate the salvation of the Jewish people from the evil plot of Hamman. Hebrew School celebrations begin with a cooking project. Students will bake ozney haman to add to their mishloach manot.

During Passover, we celebrate the physical and spiritual liberation from slavery to freedom. Our K-2nd grade students will be engaged in hands on activities related to the story of Moses. Our older students will conduct their own Passover Seder. As I review the reasoning behind these celebrations, there is one motive that ties them all together: the value of Hacarat Hatov Hacarat Hatov, recognizing and appreciating the good, is simply being grateful for what we have. As humans, with the harshness of our daily lives, we easily tend to overlook the good in the world. We take things for granted, and only when something negative happens are we reminded of how fragile and unexpected life can be. In celebrating these holidays, we are reminded to share what we have with those in need. We are encouraged to use our resources to make our world a better place for future generations to come. Mostly, we are encouraged to live appreciative, joyful lives. On March 31st, our Aleph class (third grade), will be leading Shabbat services as part of their Consecration cer-emony that marks an important milestone in our students’ Jewish education. At this age, students explore what makes them feel safe in the world. It is not an easy task, extremely difficult at times, as they search for their place and purpose in the world. When we teach our students the value of Hacarat Hatov, and the place their family has in their lives, to support and protect, we then provide them with the opportunity to appreciate the good in their lives. We provide them with a sense of security that is so important in one’s social and emotional development. Every week, I witness their pride, enthusiasm, and smiles as they practice their role in the Friday night services. I feel blessed to be part of their educational journey. I am grateful to be able to share my love of Judaism with them and appreciate these precious moments of joy.

Another Great Month Around the Corner

As fun as February was, we are ready to swing into Spring! Moving on to SA/TO March 5th is SA/TO Sunday, an annual event of fundraising for charity and doing mitzvah projects. This year’s SA/TO project is a Foam Run and collection of nonper-ishable goods. Another special feature on SA/TO Sunday is the sub-regional board elections. Elections will bring great speeches and passionate candidates. This year our very own Zakari Kostzer is running for Sub Regional Secretary. Chapters also get to compete for Joe Nebbish. In the past, there has been a lip sync/skit that exemplifies the year’s theme. Chapters get Joe Nebbish points throughout the year by having ruach at events. Those points are combined with the SA/TO Sunday competition points to win the prize which is a stuffed doll with an

item of clothing from each chapter that won him over the years. For 2016-2017 we were honored with having Joe Nebbish, but now it’s time to return him to go to a new home. Also, the chapter that has become the most improved during the year wins another doll named Bro Nebbish, Joe Nebbish’s little brother. The Youth Department will be joining the rest of the congregation for the Megillah Reading on March 11th at 6:30 pm, dinner at 5:30 pm. Come in your favorite Purim costume. Ice cream and hammentashen will be served for dessert. Following the Megillah Reading, there will be a Purim carnival on Sunday March 12th from 12-2pm. SAVE THE DATETBTST Sisterhood Annual Fashion Show

Honoring:Ellen Sax

Sunday, March 26, 2017

Sisterhood has a busy month of activities including our entertaining, lively and successful Fashion show on March 26, and another thought provoking evening of learning with Dr. Lilien-thal on March 29. Last, and certainly not least, we will spend a fun evening mastering the basics of crochet and knitting with those of us who already have that skill set and are happy to share some tips and advice. Look out for little woolen items popping up around town!

A group from sisterhood will participate in the Six Million Steps to Holocaust Awareness event on April 2. We invite and welcome you to join us, with your family and friends, to walk in memory of those who needlessly perished during the Holocaust.

We sent several care packages as part of our college connection and as a way to celebrate Tu Bishvat in Febru-ary. Our students appreciated the goodies....and ask that we send more!

Look for details about activities for the coming months, such as a Pesach cooking demonstration, a fun exercise class, acquiring some proactive measures to maintain healthy hearing and vision, and a Shavuot pot luck meal and learning session. Let me know your current email or mailing address by contacting me through the front office or at the address shown above to ensure you receive information about our upcoming events! You will not want to miss out on the fun!

We will celebrate Purim earlier this month. We will read the Megillah, rattle our groggers when we hear Ha-man's name, enjoy hammentaschen, dress in crazy costumes, and give or received small gifts. As Rabbi Gold told us, God is never mentioned in the story of Esther, but we realize that God is hidden in the miracle of that story. Similarly, Hashem is not hidden from us today, nor should we hide from Him/Her. Hashem is all around and close to each and every one of us, so there is no need to go far or spend time looking! Begin with a few simple ways to bring a spark of Shekhinah into our busy lives. When we wake up and stretch our body, simultane-ously "stretch" and awaken our mind and soul by saying modeh ani, the Shema. Express a simple prayer of thanks for being alive, hope for a good day (even when you're stuck in traffic or facing a tough task at work), give a thought for a family member or close friend with health or other worries. These are a few ways to establish and build a daily spiritual habit, reveal and strengthen a personal relationship with Hashem. Try it for a week and let me know the results!

A quote to ponder, from Thomas Carlyle "Who has health has hope, and who has hope has everything."

Fondly, June

FOREVER YOUNG BOOK CLUB

This has been a great month for the Men’s club. Two years ago when, after the merger, I joined the TBTST club and the average attendance at the meetings was 4-5 men. Now we triple that. In fact, we actually ran out of donuts and cookies before the meeting was over. This is a great vehicle for making male friends for golf, target shooting, going out for dinner etc. etc. etc. In February we sponsored the World Wide Wrap. With the help of the Minyan it was a great success. We taught students, men and women how to put on tefillin. One never knows when

this knowledge will be needed but it is a special Jewish tradition that everyone should have. This was followed by a pancake, bagel and egg breakfast supplied by the temple and cooked and served by the Club. We had over 50 people for the breakfast.

In March we will be preparing and serving the Purim Salad bar. This is always a fun event. We are planning other events and would like to get everyone's input. If you would like to participate please give me a call.

The Forever Young Book Club meets monthly(Sept-June) on the third Wednesday at 1:00 PM in the synagogue library. We are men and women from a variety of backgrounds with many interests who love to read and have discussions with others. Attendees are encouraged to recommend titles(non-fiction and fiction). Ultimately, we choose what the majority desires. Rabbi Michael Cain, our discussion leader for several years, continues to provide knowledge and expertise. Since January, individual members serve as discussion leaders. Here is our upcoming schedule: March 15-Last Woman Standing by Thelma Adams; April 19 - Small Great Things by Jody Picoult and May and June TBD. So, come, enjoy the reading and discussion. Individual flyers are available outside the synagogue office. We, the current members, would like to say"thank you" to Gloria Rosenblum and appreciate her time and effort in starting the book club, maintaining memberships and schedules as well as providing suggestions for books. Questions from synagogue members can be directed to David Jaspan at 954-724-5026.

Parking Lot SafetyTo help keep all of our children safe we request that all parents and grandparents observe the following safety procedures:• When in the parking lot please do not drive more than 15 MPH, observe the same rules as in a school zone - such as not using your cell phone.• Please hold your child/children by the hand when in the parking lot.• Do not park your car in front of the school entrance, please park only in the parking lot. This is for the safety of our children as they exit the building.• Please do not park in reserved spaces.• Do not leave your car running when dropping off or picking up your child. Again this is a safety hazard. We cannot be responsible for your car or your property.

Dear Friends,On Sunday, April 2, 2017 from 9:00am–12:00 pm, we will be hosting our third annual Six Million Steps to Ho-locaust Awareness walk at the Coral Springs Sportsplex Track, Coral Glades High School, 2700 Sportsplex Drive, Coral Springs. The purpose of this walk is to bring our Broward County community together and heighten the awareness of the atrocities that occurred during the Holocaust. With our cumulative steps, those who perished during the Holocaust will be remembered. As a member of our community, we are hopeful that we can count on your support to not only participate in this walk, which drew over 300 people from our community last year, but to help with a sponsorship of this important event this year. Because of your generosity, we can continue to educate our community and future generations to remember and never forget. In addition, with your support, we can raise scholarship money for teens in our community to attend the March of the Living; “a program where teens from around the world come together each year and bear witness to the destruction of the Holocaust in Poland and then travel to Israel to rejoice in the Jewish Homeland”. This trip provides a hands-on experience to Holocaust education and liberation in Israel.

The tree has always been a symbol of life and strength in the Jewish tradition. The parts of the tree depend upon one another just as those in need in our com-munity depend upon Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek for help and support.

In the same manner, Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek depends upon the generosity of our community to enable us to continue to provide that support. The Tree of Life is the perfect symbol to allow us to recognize the generous donors who, in turn, help us to continue providing necessary services to our community.

Consider honoring a friend or relative’s birthday, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversary, etc. or using this as a memorial gift. By purchasing a leaf for the Tree of Life, you will not only be helping the Tree to grow,

but you will also be helping TBTST to grow, now and in the future. There are gold, silver and bronze leaves available at a price of $180.If you are interested in supporting TBTST, please contact our office and we will gladly assist you. You can also email [email protected] or make your donation online at www.tbtst.org.

Thank you for your donation.

TBTST looks forward to acknowledging significant milestones in the lives of our members. Please notify the Temple Office when you have a birthday or anniversary to celebrate. We are constantly updating our records and we want to be timely in offering you a mazel tov. If you have a family member, or know of a fellow congregant, who is ailing or in the hospital, please notify us as well. The Rabbi tries to visit hospitalized members and we will include them in our Prayers for the Sick (see form elsewhere in this issue.) When you contact us, please include your phone number and make sure we have your email address.

The WECARE community outreach program operates a food pantry that provides over 3,500 bags of groceries each year to our neighbors in need regardless of race, religion, age, gender or nationality. We could not accomplish this important mitzvah if not for the generous donations we re-ceive year round from caring individuals, organizations, schools, synagogues and businesses in our community. Thanks to United Way of Broward County, we are also able to distribute fresh produce to needy people through Project Lifeline. Donations are greatly needed and appreciated to keep our shelves stocked so we can help the many men, women and children needing our services throughout the year. Currently, WECARE provides enough free non-perishable food and fresh produce to prepare over 65,000 meals for our neighbors in need. WECARE also collects small toiletry items, provides free medical equipment loans including wheelchairs, walkers and canes, distributes hand-knitted items to nursing home residents, and collects eyeglasses and hearing aids that are sent to New Eyes for the Needy. Donations of toiletry items and medical equipment are very much appreciated. Facts about Hunger in Broward County According to Million Meals Committee, there are 19 active food pantries in Broward County inclusive of the Soref JCC WECARE Food Pantry, and 4 active food banks. The Broward Regional Health Planning Council, Inc., Food Security Survey Report notes that 44% of all students enrolled in Broward County elementary schools qualify for free and reduced lunches. 15% of 56,873 Broward children live in poverty.

ADAR / NISAN 5777 NAME

YahzreitsOne of the most beautiful and meaningful customs of the Jewish people is remembering

those we have lost by memorializing our beloved through acts of Tzedakah and by saying Kaddish. The following Yahrzeits will be acknowledged and Kaddish will be said during

Shabbat Services on the dates below.

PRAYERS FOR THE SICK If a relative or friend is suffering from an illness, perhaps you would like to recite a special prayer for the speedy recovery of the ailing person. Traditionally, the Hebrew name of the sick person and the Hebrew name of the sick person's mother are mentioned during the prayer. It would be helpful if you would provide us with this information when you make your request. Prayers for the recovery of the sick are customarily accompanied by a gift to a deserving charity. The merit of this kind deed arouses God's mercy and His powers of healing. Although any amount is deemed appropriate on such an occasion, a gift of CHAI - $18 - or multiples of 18 - is particularly fitting when pleading for a person's recovery from sickness. CHAI in Hebrew means life. The two Hebrew letters which constitute the word - CHET and YUD - have the numerical equivalents of eight and ten respectively, together yielding the sum of eighteen. For this reason it has become a custom to give charity in the amount of CHAI when praying for the well-being of a suffering person. Enclosed please find a contribution in the sum of $ _____________________________________________________Please make a Misheberach (Prayer for the recovery) for:Name (English) _________________________________________________________________________________(Hebrew)_______________________Mother's Name (Hebrew) ___________________________________________

DONOR IN MEMORY OF DONOR IN MEMORY OF

YahzreitsDonations

Yahrzeit is a Yiddish word, which literally means “time of year” or memorial. Jews of Ashkenazi descent use this term. Sephardim call this commemoration nahala, in Ladino. This custom is widely observed and based on the Jewish tradition of commemorating the death of a relative.

All the Yahrzeit rituals are deeply ingrained in the Jewish life. The common rituals that are performed in the honorable memory of the departed soul include reciting the Kaddish prayer and lighting a Yahrzeit candle.

Yahrzeit also includes the action of donating charity in memory of a deceased loved one. Through the performance of the mitzvah of tzedakah in the name of the departed, the merit of the deed is shared with the soul of the late relative, as their memory is enhanced.

Making a donation is a wonderful way to acknowledge a special occasion, important date, promotion or award; send get well wishes or condolences; express appreciation for an act of kindness; and honor or remember a special person in your life. For more information please

call the Temple Office at 954.721.7660 ext. 110.
