When Alla and I were looking at synagogues three years ago and deciding where we might like to be, Alla put Temple Israel at the top of the list and said to me: “David, read about this shul. I think this might be the perfect place for us.” And she was right! I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to serve this community for three years, and it is with humility and gratitude that I have signed with the synagogue a long-term contractual agreement.

I want to thank all the members of the congregation for allowing Alla and me, as well as Laurence and Ariel, to feel so much a part of “the family” that our synagogue is. I cannot imagine a better synagogue for my children to grow up in, and I know that this is a sentiment shared by all the parents out there! I want to thank all the voices and souls who make our worship inspiring, creating for us a house of prayer, all the minds, ears and mouths that come into Temple Israel to learn and teach, creating for us a house of study, and all the hands and hearts that work to create for us a house of gathering, a true bet kenesset. I want to especially thank those who have let me into your lives at times of need, times of sorrow and times of joy. Alla and I look forward to many years of friendship and community at Temple Israel.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Fellow Congregants, I am pleased to announce that at the last meeting, the Board of Trustees of Temple Israel voted on a long term contract extension for Rabbi David J. Fine. In an era of uncertainty in the organized religious community, we have insured stability in our home. Temple Israel is a better place for him being here and will continue to strive for excellence in the future.

Stability does not mean that we can become complacent. We always need greater participation and support. The community exists for you but also because of you. It is through everyone’s efforts that we remain successful. Success in adult education, Tikkun Olam, Men’s Club and Sisterhood to name a few rely on you participation. When you have a feeling of ownership, the experience becomes that much better. Take ownership in Temple Israel. Of course every owner should be fully financially invested. Part of our stability depends on finances. I hate to beat this drum too often but there is no secret that behind the scenes we are actually running a business with employees and a physical plant. Each of our rooftop A/C units cost $10,000.00 to replace. We have seven of them. A new roof probably costs $100,000.00. We are in the 10th year of a 20 year cycle on roof repairs. Things like this are normally transparent to the membership but it is something that is discussed ad nauseum at the board level. It is never my wish to beat anyone over the head with this but it is information that may give all of you a little insight into the reasons for the emphasis on the efforts. Your support as always is acknowledged and appreciated. March is a month of great fun. We start off with Soulebration on March 3. Party with your friends. Then Purim. Party on farther Garth. After that, we get to gather around to roast our BMC Man of the Year, Bob Obeiter when we all get find the answer to the question, “will the hat fit?”

Update on Agahozo Shalom Youth Villlage ---Two Years Later Two years ago our Temple Israel community embraced a project to sponsor one child at the Agahozo Shalom Youth Village, a school dedicated to helping orphans of the Rwandan genocide. In the intervening years the school now houses four full high school years, with a 125 students in each class. The first class will graduate this year! The students are amazing—they not only have seized this opportunity to begin life anew and be educated, but also to perform true Tikkun Olam in helping to heal the world. It is impossible to convey the miracle and magic of this truly unique village so we encourage all to visit their website at www.asy.org. In our lifetime we see that certain people, certain groups, certain ideas can change the world. This is one of those times. And as we all know, Tikkun Olam does not have any expiration date for supporting good works.

March 24, Men’s Club Shabbat: Services on Shabbat will be led by the men of our congregation and all are invited to attend. March 25, Men’s Club Brunch honoring and roasting our MOY Bob Obeiter! Please join us for brunch and roasting of Bob Obeiter. The festivities begin right after minyan, 10:30am. Our Man of the Year, Robert Obeiter, is so well deserving of this honor. Bob does so much for our shul in many capaci-

ties, he has been Ritual Chair, House Chair, and was instrumental in our water recovery system, energy savings, a lot of special shul maintenance work, and we all see Bob regularly as gabbai on our bimah. Bob has energetically involved himself in all facets of Temple Israel and we are very lucky to have him a member, and are delighted to honor him as this year’s MOY. To read more about Bob please go to our Temple Israel web site for more: http://synagogue.org/OurCommunity/BrandeisMensClub.aspx. This year we will also be honoring all past Brandeis Men’s Club Presidents, so please plan to attend this wonderful

event. Ski Trip to Bellayre Mountain on Sunday, January 15 was a success. We had some snow, and all came back to Ridgewood in one piece! Thanks to Denis Vogel for making all the ar-rangements1 Our Brandeis Men’s Club and Temple Beth Sholom’s Men’s Club cooperated in a new

project for our school. We donated Hebrew-English Dictionaries to all the students in classes Gimmel/Dalet/Hey. We expect this to be an annual event for the Gimmel Class. This year we gave to all three classes so that every graduating student from NNJA will have a Hebrew-English dictionary for future use. Our Annual fund raiser was Saturday, January 21. It was a terrific event attended by many of us. The billed performer, Gerard Edery came down with laryngitis a couple of days before and could not sing! So, Cantor Caitlin learned the songs, many in Spanish, and performed the concert by herself with the Gerard Edery ensemble’s great music. What a night! With all respect to Gerard, we got more than we bargained for. We also had a special performance by none other than Rabbi David Fine who also was terrific. Don’t miss the Rabbi’s and Cantor’s next performance…every Shabbat. Thanks also to all who participated in our raffle, which was very successful! Congratulations to all our winners! Especially the Bordowitz’s who won first prize of a night in the City, with either theatre or concert tickets!

World Wide Wrap was Sunday, February 5, 9:00am. We all learned the history and ritual of tefillin with Rabbi Sharon, and Kitah Hey. This is an annual event supported by FJMC, the national office for all Conservative Men’s Clubs! Wine Tasting with Sisterhood on Sunday afternoon, March 4. Taste

kosher for passover wines, prior to purchase. The tasting, and purchasing these Kosher for Passover Wines will take place from 11:30am – 1:30pm, so those attending the Rabbi’s class will have plenty of time to taste afterwards. Sisterhood and BMC will provide light snacks. Your orders will be available at Temple Israel before Passover. Save the date: BMC annual Golf Outing, Thursday, June 14. Farmstead Golf & Country Club! YOUTH HAPPENINGS El Al had an amazing time at the Shabbaton in February. We learned about the 10 commandments and how they apply to our lives. We helped to lead Youth Shabbat services, which was a real honor. We stayed up late eating cookies and twizzlers, and we played lots and lots of GaGa in the Social Hall. Thanks Jose and Tina for letting us

use all the long tables as a GaGa pit on the dance floor. Thank you to Martin Shames, Alan Gallatin, and Dan Unger for helping chaperone the Shabbaton. It was a lot of fun and many of the El Al-niks would like us to do it again and again! The Shabbaton is a great annual tradition, and we will do it again next year. In March El Al will have its annual Chocolate Seder. We will meet March on 18 from 12:45-2:15 in the social hall for green M&M karpas, Ice Cream drumstick Shankbones, and 4 cups of chocolate milk. Please RSVP by March 12. Rabbi Sharon

Bequests To Temple Israel You can make an enduring gift to Temple Israel through your will as a bequest. A bequest is perhaps the simplest form of planned giving to arrange, and Temple Israel can be named as one of your beneficiaries. A bequest could involve cash, stocks, real estate or other property and is usually a percentage of the residue of your estate, which is given after your family needs are cared for. You may designate that your bequest be used for a particular purpose, and you may indicate whether it is for current needs or endowment. Because a bequest is revocable, there is no immediate income tax deduction, but your gift will be deductible from your taxable estate. Please consult with an attorney when writing your will in order for your wishes to be clearly articulated.
