President’s Message

Rabbi’s & President’s Messages

Dear Fellow Congregants: Where has the time gone? The start of October and the month of Tishrei (beginning) — fall on the same day. Starting with Rosh Hashanah and moving through Sukkot and Simchat Torah, we celebrate the beginning of a new year, the gathering of the fall harvest, and restarting the annual cycle of reading the Torah. So many joyous moments, so much for which we are grateful, and so much to look forward to in the coming year.

For us, the New Year signals the beginning of our end of wandering when we enter our new home. Admittedly, wandering in Bexley is not as challenging as the desert for 40 years, but just as our forebearers prepared themselves to arrive in their new home, we, too, must prepare to enter ours. To achieve the success we desire when we enter our new home, we must engage in spiritual preparation, self-reflection, and soul-searching. I see the year ahead as our opportunity to prepare, reflect and search in order to set us up for great success when we stand together to open the doors on our new home. While the bricks and mortar of our new building represent a physical place, we want to prepare ourselves for the spirit and spirituality that makes Temple Israel unique. This requires our individual points of view to manifest themselves in a communal purpose. With the guidance of the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), we will launch a congregational assessment project in the near future. The assessment will allow us to LOOK AT OURSELVES. We will be able to understand our strengths and weaknesses, so that we can construct a roadmap for growth. With these benchmarks we will be able to measure our performance in the years to come. In the future, I envision an assessment every few years to determine our strengths and evaluate areas for growth. The Assessment will also allow us to set priorities and determine benchmarks for years to come as we will be able to compare ourselves to similar sized congregations. Over the last few years we have established a positive momentum that is recognized in Columbus and within the URJ. We want to continue to foster that momentum, and each of you is a contributor to our strength. Of course, you will be informed about the particulars of the assessment in advance. It is your impressions and aspirations that we will seek because those are the things that make us strong. Amy

As you are reading this, dear friend, Rosh Hashanah has just concluded and we are well on our way to Yom Kippur. These ten days between the two High Holy Days give us the chance to “go there”- to finally ask forgiveness for that which weighs down our hearts, to take a hard look in the mirror and decide what changes need to be made once and for all. It’s hard work… but reason for celebration once we do it! For inspiration, please enjoy (and be challenged by!)

this wonderful poem by Trisha Arlin called “Place Yourself: An Unetaneh Tokef:”

PLACE YOURSELF in front of the fear. You will be judged, you will die. Place yourself in the center of the universe, You earned that spot simply by existing. Place yourself under obligation to God However you understand or don’t understand God. Place yourself on the path of holiness and joy and truth. Bless and be blessed by HaMakom, the Place where we find ourselves. REMEMBER Remember what you did wrong Remember what you did right. Remember those who came before you. Remember that you are responsible for those who come after you. Remember your history. Remember Torah. Bless and be blessed by Shaddai, remembering us. DECLARE YOURSELF Because the truly evil are already condemned, The truly good are already blessed, And then, there’s the rest of us. It is said that on Rosh Hashanah God decides your fate: life or death. And the ten days until Yom Kippur are your opportunity to change God’s mind. So don’t blow it. This is a powerful day, a fantastic opportunity! Declare yourself for holiness and joy and truth. Bless and be blessed by Shekhinah, listening. NOW WE DECLARE And as a congregation, we proclaim: Let the holiness rise up! On Rosh Hashanah it is written On Yom Kippur it is sealed. And let us declare together: We understand nothing. All that is physical ends. We die. But not today. Except sometimes, today. We fret about the past and worry about the future

Samara Kahan, daughter of Jessica Kahan and Jason Kahan, will be called to the Torah on Saturday, October 12. She is the granddaughter of Francine and Leonard Kwarta, Toni and Peter Dunleavy and Robert and Nancy Kahan. She is the younger sister of Talia. Samara is an 8th grader at Bexley Middle School where she is a co-captain for the school’s field hockey team. She also enjoys theater and is a black belt in Karate. Samara is excited to have family joining her from all over the country to celebrate this important day. Through becoming a Bat Mitzvah, she has learned the importance of keeping the Torah as a guide in her life, as well as the importance of her Jewish identity and family history. Samara is the grandchild and great grandchild of Holocaust survivors. Her mitzvah project is collecting socks for the homeless to donate to Faith Mission. Socks are the #1 most requested item at homeless shelters.

Thank You, Katzinger’s Deli! 7th graders went to Katzinger's Deli to learn the history of Ashkenazi cuisine and the rise of Jewish delicatessens in Europe and the United States. They tried three dishes: kugel, a blintz, and of course, latkes! They read about the

development of these foods as a cultural fusion between European culinary practices and Jewish necessity for keeping food hot and ready for Shabbat. As in the case of kugel, this noodle/bread pud-ding developed in conjunction with Cholent stew that was prepared for Shabbat on Friday nights and left to simmer throughout the day on Saturday. We are so grateful for their support in this immersive learning experience.

In Our Congregation Building Update

Dear Temple Israel families: The Building Committee is pleased to announce that after what must feel like a long wait, construction of our new home at 3100 East Broad Street has begun! We are thrilled that we are working with a wonderful contractor, at a price we can afford, guided by the

construction drawings that were drawn and redrawn and redrawn by our fabulous architect. We hope to have an electronic version of the final construction plans posted on our TI Website soon after the High Holidays.

We are grateful for those of you who are have participated, and continue to serve, on several critical committees. And a special thank you to the Boards of both Temple Israel and the Temple Foundation who have traveled this journey with us throughout the past year.

As we are all on this journey together, the Building Committee is committed to providing regular (a) construction update reports (b) requests to the congregation to participate on committees yet to be formed and (c) reminders to consider giving to the Shuvu Campaign or

Building Fund if you have not yet done so.

If you drive by the site, please continue driving! This is now an active construction project and the safety of the workers and the protection of construction equipment and materials are of great importance. Please refrain from visiting as the site will be actively secured during non-working hours.

We hope you all are as excited as we are. Please let us know if you have questions via email at [email protected]. What a wonderful way to end the current year and roll into year 5780.

Shana Tova to all, The Building Committee

And forget to live with where we are now. And then we die. We understand nothing. But Teshuvah, tefilah, & tzedakah Restore us to our place. Teshuvah, when we return to our true selves; Tefillah, when we stop time in holy conversation; Tzedakah, when we transcend self; And that’s when God decrees. Bless and be blessed by Ruakh Ha-olam, breathing mindfulness. THE DAY IS HOLY Listen to the shofar as it announces: Awesome and sacred is this sweet day! The world is filled with the Divine, we are surrounded! Hear us, know us. Love us, enjoy us. Remember us, rouse us. Forgive us, inspire us, Bless and be blessed by Elohim, the Creator, the Created, Creating. We place ourselves in front of the fear, On the path of holiness and joy and truth. Amen.

The Tzedakah Collective is a women’s philanthropy group that learns about the missions and needs of worthy non-profits whose work is consistent with our Reform Jewish values. This year’s potential grant recipients include Joseph’s Coat (addressing the clothing and household needs of the poorest residents of Central Ohio), Growlers Dog Bones (providing vocational training and employment to young adults with disabilities), ACTION Ohio (assisting foster children as they age out of the foster care system, under the umbrella of the Ohio Children’s Alliance), and the Harmony Project (connecting Central Ohioans across social divides through the arts, education and volunteer community service.) A minimum tax deductible donation of $60 is all that is required to become a Tzedakah Collective member for the year, and we will accept new members through November. Our members belong to each of the Reform synagogues in Central Ohio, and we welcome unaffiliated women. We invite you to join us! Temple Israel Foundation

The Temple Israel Foundation Legacy Circle was established to honor and recognize individuals and families who have left legacies to the Temple Israel Foundation and those who have made charitable provisions in their estates to benefit our synagogue family.

Some congregants have named the Temple Israel Foundation in their will as a recipient of a set percentage or dollar amount of their estate. Some congregants have designated the Foundation as the beneficiary to a life insurance policy, retirement fund, or IRA. Some may also consider making a bequest of real estate, a valuable work of art or other personal property.

The Temple Israel Foundation proudly recognizes the living members of the Temple Israel Foundation’s Legacy Circle:
