But here is the truth. Jews have built and lived in diaspora communities even in the days of the Bible and Antiquity - even while the Kingdoms of Judah and Judaea were flourishing. As economic partners and sources of political support, as centers of scholarship and trade, Jewish life was always a partnership between the two commu- nities. Each needed the other for succor and support. It is no different today. Pro-Israel voices, fluent and articulate in English, have a vitally important role to play in defend- ing Israel. Military strength alone is insufficient. This summer, as we contemplate the three weeks and Tisha B'Av, let us reflect on this balance between homeland and exile. Remember, a wheel needs both a strong tire and a strong hub. We are the spokes connecting the two. May we always keep a strong connection. That's how we roll!

Many Israeli Jews at the first news of resurgent anti-Semitism in the West insist that the sole response for any sane Jew is to "return home" to Israel. A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT …… Dr. Sandra Alfonsi

As I write this message the month of June is coming to an end and with it the end of my second year as President of Temple Israel. As I look back on this year I admit that I have to smile at what we have accomplished together. We celebrated Rosh Hashanah with joy and left our services with a new-found belief that we were truly beginning a new year for Temple Israel. For the first time in many years we did not cancel upcoming events because of apathy and lack of support. We held our Israeli Fair and our annual Community Menorah Lighting Event. Members, Hebrew School families and their children and guests from the greater Stroudsburg community filled our Social Hall. They brought their menorahs and kindled the candles, sang Chanukah songs and ate home-made latkes. After Chanukah we celebrated Purim together – members, Hebrew School children and parents and once again individuals from outside our Temple Israel community. Perhaps the greatest accomplishment this year was our beautiful, well attended and thoroughly enjoyed First Seder. For the second time in two years we prepared our home for Pesach and welcomed members, their family and guests as well as strangers who were seeking a Seder and came to us. As we welcomed them they were no longer strangers but a part of our Temple Israel family. We have had a Minyan every Shabbat morning since before Rosh Hashanah. Individuals in need of a Minyan in order to say Kaddish now come to us and feel that they are a part of our family. We voted to abolish the traditional dues schedule and to adopt a per person affiliation fee of $200. It was indeed a very good year.

My third term as your President will begin on July 1st. It will start with mega-event of major im-portance to us as Jews. On Sunday August 9 we will hold a concert at the Theater at Stroudsburg High School. This concert From Shtetl to Broadway to Israel: A Celebration of Jewish Peoplehood is a response to the rise of anti-Semitism and anti-Israelism witnessed this year. Soon after we will come together to celebrate Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and to pray for another year of life for us, our families and our beloved Temple Israel. Exciting events are being planned for the upcoming year: the return of Kaskeset in the fall; several Shabbat Dinners; a pre-Chanukah Bazaar and our Community Chanukah Menorah Lighting, to name a few. We will share meals together and celebrate life cycle events. There will be some changes in the upcoming year – changes which are designed to help us grow.

So, as my second year comes to an end, I thank all of you for continuing this journey with me. May we go from strength to strength together!

DIVINE COMMUNICATION By Norman Gelber

In an early scene in Shakespeare’s tragedy, Hamlet, the brooding protagonist who has just experienced a traumatic visit and story from his slain father’s ghost, says to his loyal friend, Horatio, "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamed of in your Philosophy." Hamlet cannot be referring merely to the belief in the existence of human souls after death, for that belief was already an integral part of the Roman Catholic religion. So what "things in heaven and earth" could Hamlet have had in mind?

Whatever the answer, it probably refers to matters beyond the scope of the known philosophy and theology prevailing at that time. I suggest that it concerned the extraordinary event that Hamlet had recently experienced– the visitation and story of his father’s ghost – that prompted him to refer to the mysteries that exist beyond the scope of philosophy or a university education. The Torah is our primary source of information on this subject. In the Torah we learn that God speaks to Adam and Eve, to the Patriarchs, to Moses, to King David, to his son Solomon, and to His prophets. We speak to God in our prayers to Him, in our belief and faith in Him, and in our obedience to His commandments. The point is that communication between God and human beings may be in words or in the context of a seeming miraculous event. The Exodus, the division of the Red Sea, the giving of the Ten Commandments, the trek of the Israelites through the Wilderness to Canaan, the survival of the children of Israel despite enemy occupation, many years of exile and dispersion, attest to Divine intercession in behalf of His "Chosen People." In other words, these miraculous events do not need spoken words to assure the Israelites of Divine protection. Just as a picture is said to be worth a thousand words, so can meaningful events convey a message: if we take the time and make the effort to search for one.

Despite these modes of Divine communication, we are rarely aware of them today because of our busy involvement in the practical concerns of daily living. Besides, we tend to be skeptical and wary about experiences that we cannot weigh, measure, or actually perceive. Yet I believe that "God works in mysterious ways His wonders to perform," and that He communicates with us in non-verbal ways. For example, I have discovered that spending many weeks in the hospital and in rehabilitation was a blessing in disguise, for it gave me the opportunity to meditate on what seemed to be adverse experiences and to find their unexpected advantages.

The Biblical story of Joseph provides an instructive example of God’s communicating with man by means of a prophetic dream-vision. When Joseph reveals his dream that he will become the leader of his family, his father Jacob and his envious brothers believe that his dream foretells the future. Their belief is vindicated when the story ends with Joseph’s becoming the Pharaoh’s overseer as a reward for his foreknowledge and advice on how to adapt to the impending seven years of drought that Egypt will suffer.

Most people today would probably describe a prophetic dream-vision as just anecdotal, nothing more than a personal experience or coincidence. Thus far, direct Divine communication with humans cannot be empirically proved or disproved!

ASK THE RABBI by Rabbi Baruch Binyamin Hakohen Melman Dear Rabbi Melman, Most of my Jewish family and friends are very generous people. They leave nice tips if the service is good. Some even tip nicely in advance, in order to ensure good service! Even if one looks around in the major cities, so many hospitals, universities and cultural institutions are festooned with clearly Jewish names, proud that this country enabled them to flourish and give back to the country for all the opportunities for success which it provided. So my question is, why do so many people say that "Jews are cheap." In my own experience that belief is so very far from reality. And yet it persists. Why? Thank you, Curious ************************************************************************** Dear Curious, You are right! Jews are among the most generous people on the planet. Of course, we all know exceptions. But they are the exceptions, not the rule, in my opinion. This myth of the stingy and cheap Jew first arose during the days of Antiquity, in the Hellenistic era. In a polytheistic society, people were expected to bring sacrificial offerings to all their gods. No exceptions. The more gods, the more sacrifices. And sacrifices were not cheap. Now when they saw that Jews only worshipped one god, they just assumed the worst of intentions. Jews, they said, only worshipped one god so that they could save money. They were clearly too cheap to be like everyone else and worship many gods with their many sacrifices. This is based on jealousy. And to add to the accusations, they looked around and saw that Jews "took off" a day from work each week as a day of rest. Why did they need a day of rest, they wondered? Because Jews must be lazy, they said. Here they were, slaving away seven days a week to give expensive sacrificial gifts to their gods and their insatiable priests, and these Jews have the gall to rest one whole day each and every week and worship just but one god. So that is their "proof" that Jews are both lazy as well as cheap. And so, throughout every historical era and epoch, as cultures and religions came and went, one deep "truth" lived on and persisted throughout the vicissitudes of the ages, passed down from family to family in each generation. Of course, when one struggles economically one is looking to blame some one else for his troubles. And of course the ruler is looking to blame "the other" - the Jew - to deflect the anger of the masses at their suffering and plight. And so the myth lives on. But the best way to fight it is to be a personal example of its opposite. © 2015 by Rabbi Baruch Binyamin Hakohen Melman

FROM YOUR MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE…..

we offer you a challenge!

We need everyone to help with this. Surely you know individuals and families who have no affiliation with a Synagogue.

Encourage them to become members of our Temple Israel Family!

If every family brings in one individual or family,

think of the possibilities!

At Temple events, be they regular Shabbat Services or a social occasion, introduce yourself to anyone you don’t recognize. You’ll make new friends

and assist us in enlarging our family.

YOU CAN BE PART OF OUR SUCCESS!!

For information please contact:

Dr. Sandra Alfonsi 223-7062

[email protected]

or Temple Israel 421-8781

Please leave a phone number so that we may return your call.
