Formula in BuddhismThe 18 Vow: #6; King of Vows

The formula below consists of essential items for learning the Teaching of Buddha:1. To Learn Buddhism is to learn myself,2. to learn myself is to learn Buddha’s Compassion.3. to learn Compassion is to forget myself,4. and to forget myself is to throw me into Buddha’s World.

The 18th Vow“If, when I attain Buddhahood, the sentient beings of the 10 quarters who, withsincere and entrusting heart, aspire to be born in my land and say my name even10 times, should not be born there, may I not attain the perfect enlightenment.Excluded are those who commit the five grave offenses and those who slander theright Dharma.”

Words:1. Sentient being of the 10 quarters: Sentient being = you and me2. Sincere heart: The heart generated by Wisdom of Buddha.3. Entrusting heart: The heart generated by Compassion of Buddha.4. Aspire to be born in my land: The future direction of my life.5. Even 10 times: As long as my life lasts, even very short, recitation is essential.6. Five grave offenses: Those who commit offenses such as (1) murder father, (2)

murder mother, (3) murder Bodhisattvas, (4) murder Buddha, (5) destroy harmony in sangha.7. Slander the right Dharma: False spoken statements related to Mahayana

Teaching.

This Vow is called “King of Vows”; it clarifies the true meaning of Amida’s Nameand its recitation. Recitation of the Name is a practice available to everyone.

The recitation is easy, quick, and simple for everyone even if a person is not aBuddhist. The essence of Mahayana Buddhism is to provide the vessel that carriesany&every body equally from a world filled with suffering to a world of highestenlightenment. It is simply because the Name (Namo-Amida-Butsu) is made of purecause of Wisdom and pure condition of Compassion. That’s why its pure result iscalled “Pure-Land.”

“To forget myself is to throw me into Buddha’s World” means I don’t formattachments to what I have. Then, I throw myself into Buddha’s World. In otherwords, when I decide to recite the Name, that is the moment I throw myself intothe Buddha’s World. It is also the moment I recognize I become a person not to diebut one who goes into the highest Enlightenment.

Monthly Salutationsfrom Rev. Diana Thompson

Tri-State/Denver Buddhist Temple1947 Lawrence St.Denver, CO 80202

RE: Obon/Hatsubon Service

Hello everyone, welcome to June! My wall calendartells me that summer officially begins at the end ofthis month. However, my internal calendar informsme that summertime officially begins when I flip thecalendar page at the end of May. Perhaps becauseof the many school calendars that seemed to identifycertain months with certain seasons, I have verydefinite pictures in my head about what each monthwill bring; March is windy, September has applesand falling leaves, December through February arefilled with sleds and snowflakes, and June has a big, smiling sun (and often a swimming or campingmotif). Being a native of Colorado, I am well awarethat these images are just that, images. We have getsleds and snowflakes here but those can appearfrom October through May and are always brokenup by several days of sunshine. In Berkeley, CA itdoesn’t snow. The first year I lived there, it rainedfrom December through March and yet thecalendars at my daughter’s school still showed kidsplaying in the snow through those months. Theperception of those months and the reality did notquite match up and though I am keenly aware ofthis, the school calendar images remain. But let us go back to June. As I said, June is amonth of sunshine (and camping, I guess) and is, forme, the official start of summer. With pictures in mymind of rainy April and sunny but cool May, I relishthe return of June specifically because of thesunshine. I picture the sun breaking through theclouds with its big smiley face (it doesn’t wearsunglasses until July) ready to wrap everything up inits warmth. Shinran Shonin wrote, ‘the cloud of lightis unhindered, like open sky; there is nothing thatimpedes it. Every being is nurtured by this light, sotake refuge in Amida, the one beyond conception.’

When I read this passage, it reminds me June. Thelight of Amida’s great wisdom is the sun breakingthrough our dark clouds of foolishness. I rememberthat my perceptions are colored by my ownexperiences and are therefore narrow; myperceptions of the calendar year being a goodexample. The great wisdom of the Buddha is wideand sees everything just as it is and would view thecalendar year in all of its complexities, with the sunand snow existing in the same month (sometimeseven the same day) and all of it as part of the samewhole. I, too, am aware of those complexities butmy narrow perceptions make it difficult to accept allof the time. It is sometimes easier to see the smallerpicture than it is to see the whole and so I say NamoAmida Butsu to express my gratitude to the Buddhaand the Buddha’s teachings which will occasionallyremind me to recognize that the sun or light ofwisdom is always there despite the clouds.

Dear Sangha, friends and families,

The DBT runners in the Colfax Marathon would liketo express our deepest gratitude for all thedonations, support and encouragement leading upto and during the Colfax Marathon. Together our 5relay teams ran a total of 131 miles (that’s likerunning from Denver to 20 miles past Pueblo,Colorado); and raised more than $5,500 for theTemple with 10% going to the Children’s Hospital.

Special thanks go out to Donna Inouye, GaryYamashita, Joni Sakaguchi and Gail Ida for handlingall of the administrative work so the teams couldconcentrate on training and running; and to Samand Rachel Davis for designing the PayPal websiteand awesome race shirts. A big thank you alsogoes out to Shannon Umetani (aka Supermom andher husband, Zak) for hosting a pre-run dinner thenight before the run, running her 6 miles at 6amthe next morning, and still making it to Hatsumari!

Of course we can’t leave out all the runners. Thank you to all 25 runners who got to theirpositions on time and ran a great race. Did youknow that two Dharma school kids participated inthe relay? Maya Davis (age 11) ran 6 miles and KaiSakata (age 10) ran 4 miles - way to go youngrunners! Not to be out done by an 11 and 10 yearold, Jacob Daniels of YBA finished his 6 mile legand promptly went to the Chobani tent at thefinish line to do 50 push-ups and win a whole caseof Greek yogurt! And a big shout out to MikoHolmes and Quentin Yamasaki for stepping in tofill vacant running slots with only 3 weeks to trainbefore the race! Also worth mentioning, BrianHoriuchi sported a Mohawk for the event andcame in .001 seconds faster than if he would of ranwith a full head of hair.

If you didn’t get a chance to show your support, you can still donate until the end of June. Pleasevisit: http://www.tsdbt.org/web/node/263 . Thank youfor your support and generosity; it was anenjoyable and memorable event!

The first half of this year, 2014, has consisted ofmany transitions. Most of the time, we envision“transition” as a singular event, switching us overfrom old to new. But, intrinsically we know that asimple transition involves more than a beginning andend; it is a complicated web of pathways, intersections and “shakings” – in other words, asingle transition affects numerous networks andlevels of people, time and places.

Newsletter articles can be one way for Sanghamembers to track these transitions. And trackinginformation held in common with fellow Sanghamembers is important in the building andmaintaining of a group’s cohesiveness and identity.(This segues, briefly, to an apology/explanation –my life has/is undergoing major personaltransitions during this same period. As I result, Ihave been less than forceful in collectingnewsletter articles from persons and groups –resulting in this haphazard summary below.)

The TSDBT Board of Directors elected a newPresident – Rebecca Steinebrey. She was installedinto office during the Gotan E service which wasminimally attended for several co-incidentalreasons, one of them being the Colfax Marathon(SEE: page 5). The Colfax Marathon is an annualevent which invites local non-profit organizationsto participate for possible fundraising and/or PRopportunities; the Temple was introduced to this

event via business connections of Gary Yamashita,Sakura Square Management (and Sangha member).

Sakura Square connections also provide theservice/labor of Gary Matsuda who, in conjunctionwith Cal Kato and Wayne Berve, is trying to comeup to speed on all the temple building systems whileproviding solutions to immediate problems ofbasement flooding and obtaining a new firesecurity system.

Other transitions include “new” BWA co-presidents, Stacey Umemoto Ospina and LesliHirokawa. The unusual number of funeral servicesand reported illnesses have thrown Stacey andLesli quickly and relentlessly into the leadershiprole as the “caregiving” services of BWA membersare in demand. The occasion of death has alsorequired frequent usage of the Temple’s re-formedSodan Committee – thank you to Steve Nitta, CalKato, Joe Ozaki, Charles Ozaki, Frank Miyazawaand Gene Watada.

Other new officers of Temple organizationsinclude: new Dharma School co-superintendents,Naomi Nguyen and Rachel Davis; and new YBApresident, Connor Ospina. The Dharma School andYBA sponsor events on a practically, weekly basis –hopefully, I can get them (and all other mentionedofficers/organizations) to write and submitmonthly updates for newsletter publication -.

Address Service Requested

Thank to the following people who prepared lastmonth’s newsletter for mailing: Herb & Dot Inouye,Alley & Yoshimi Watada, Richard Yoshida, DoraShibata, Judy Smith, Kay Takahashi and MichikoAoki. Your “on call” spirit is greatly appreciated.

Thank you to Sangha member, Jennifer Trompeter, for taking down, washing, drying and returning theCry Room curtains. It was a huge undertaking withfresh-smelling results.

Thank you to Rex Yoshimura for donating hiselectrical know how and labor to seemingly ongoingtemple projects in the kitchen, on the roof and in theattic. How would we operate without you?

Thank you to Dat Nguyen for rebuilding Rev.Thompson’s office computer and bringing her system“up to date”. Also, thank you for your ongoingdiligence in repair and maintenance of the officecopier/printer machines.

Thank you to Rev. Thompson for coordinatingSangha member efforts so that the Temple can be a

participant in the upcoming Pride Fest Parade -Sunday, June 22nd at 9:30 a.m.

Thank you to Cal Kato; in the winter months he kepttemple grounds accessible and safe by shovelingsnow and clearing ice. He kept the temple warm bymaintaining the heating systems. He might havethought the warmer temperatures of Spring andSummer would cut back his working hours – no suchluck! Thank you, Cal, for attending to the AC andswamp cooler systems so that we can comfortablytransition to the heat of Summer.

Thank you to Gary Matsuda for jumping aboardwholeheartedly. . . in keeping with the doggedly, determined nature of any building to have problems, the Temple is keeping Gary busy with a majorplumbing repair in the basement and updating theTemple fire safety system. As a Sangha, we are veryfortunate to have someone as conscientious as GaryM. on our team (through the foresight and generosityof Sakura Square Management and Tri-StateApartments).
