The strangers who reside with you shall be to you as your citizens; you shall love each one as yourself, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt;

I the Eternal am your God. (Leviticus 19:33-34)

SYRIAN REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT PROJECT - COMMITTEE UPDATE

The Mustaffas are truly settling in and taking fulladvantage of Vancouver’s many summer offerings.

In July, Heydar and Jotres attended three weeks ofsummer school offered by the VSB. Heydar attend-ed a grade one class and Jotres was enrolled in apreparatory kindergarten class. They both cannotwait until school starts again after Labour Day!

Parents Maha and Hassan have also been workinghard in their language-learning schools, and duringthe August break they could be found studying at thelocal library. Hassan has also been preparing for hisBC driver’s license.

The family has been exploring parks and beaches, going for picnics, and meeting with newfoundfriends. One of their favourite places is the wadingpool at Maple Grove Park.

In June, Maha’s younger sister and her familyarrived in Vancouver, sponsored by the Canadiangovernment. This was the first time in five years the

two families were united; it was a joyful and emo-tional moment.

Thanks to the generosity of several dentists in ourTemple community, and with the help of specialdonations, the dental needs of the entire family havenow been addressed.

Our second family, Bawer Issa, his spouse ShinhatAhmed and their four month-old son Omed, arrivedJune 22nd. Bawer has two sisters along with brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins, already living in the Lower Mainland. This extendedfamily, along with a small contingent from TempleSholom, were at the airport to greet them. Therewere no dry eyes to be found. The family has movedinto a Burnaby apartment near family and is settlingin well. Bawer and Shinhat are well into Englishclasses, and Omed is an adorable, fast-growing sixmonth old boy. They've already met a number ofTemple members and are looking forward to meeting many more of you.

GET TO KNOW OUR NEW CANADIANS - SYRIAN/KURDISH WELCOME EVENT

The event will begin promptly at 11:30am in theSanctuary, Rabbi Moskovitz will lead a dialogue withboth families as we tell their exodus story from wartorn Syria to the safety of Vancouver, BC. Throughpictures, personal reflections and thought provoking

questions we will get to know our newest Canadianfriends and now part of our Temple Sholom extended family.

The program will end at 12:00pm where theMustaffa and Issa families and their circle of extended family here in Vancouver will host a reception of Kurdish desserts to thank TempleSholom, our volunteers and donors for sponsoringtheir immigration to Canada.

Religious School students and families will gatherfor class pizza lunches with teachers at this time.

Sometimes you justknow home when youfind it and Vancouverand Temple Sholom isvery much home to me.I first visited Vancouverin 1979, and knew thiswas the place I wanted tolive. However, it took 30years until my husbandand I finally arrived here- September 2010. In

the interim I lived in Europe, Japan, NorthCarolina, Toronto, and Calgary, so it’s been a veryindirect route. Once I arrived, I began teaching atthe Temple Sholom school and after a year or twotook on the principalship while Jen Jaffe went on maternity leave – twice in fact.

Thirty years was long enough to allow me satisfyingwork, editing and writing about science, as well as amidlife career change resulting in 20 years of teaching children and adults, English as a secondlanguage mostly. I’ve now retired and so have moretime for my three children and seven grandchildren, who are scattered all over the continent. That’s notall though. Retirement has also meant time foractivities and projects that are important to me andthat includes the Temple Sholom Sisterhood.

I joined the Sisterhood board in 2015 and initiallyput my energy into the Women’s Seder, leading ateam that organized two very successful seders atthe synagogue. In addition, last year I took on theprogramming portfolio and that’s what the secondpart of this piece is going to focus on. Plans for thisyear are pretty amazing.

Our theme for the year is “Journeying together fromour roots to our future” and our goal is to find newways for all sisterhood members to connect witheach other and to find sisterhood events that aremeaningful.

To whet your appetite, our long term plans include:a fascinating discussion of ethical eating in a Jewishcontext, a family event on December 25, and a phenomenal Women’s weekend in March. In addition, don’t forget to check our ongoing activitygroups – follow the links to the Sisterhood site onthe Temple Sholom web page.

That’s longterm. So what’s coming up in the next

few months?

Sunday, September 10th – for those of you whoremember the moving presentation given at ourAGM in May, the group Grandparents raisingGrandchildren is having a fundraising walk. For more information go to:www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/parent-sup-port-services-society-of-bc/grandparents-day-2017/

Then, save the date: Sunday, October 15 from 2:00-4:00pm theSisterhood board is hosting an opening social. Inkeeping with our theme, several of our most seniormembers will be honoured in a most special way. There will be music, and of course some deliciousnibblies. Watch for an invitation in your email.

Saturday afternoon, October 21, as part of ourCultural Crawl program, we will have a tour of theVenetian Exhibit, at the Italian Cultural Centrestarting at noon.

Finally, there are a number of new initiatives thatyou may find intriguing. Cooking: If you have always wanted to learn moreabout traditional Jewish Cooking, here’s yourchance. Once a month we will be teaching a classicJewish recipe. September 13 from 6:30-9:00pm will be our first lesson, which will focus ona delicious apple recipe for Rosh Hashanah.Register by email (see below).

Mentoring program: Temple has lots of synagogue related activities for new members, butthis program supports Judaism in the home. In thisprogram, we connect mentors from sisterhood with"new" members - new to Judaism in this case.Requirements are simple: meet for coffee, high holiday services, and a Shabbat service. Extend aninvitation for a Shabbat dinner and for participationin a home seder.

Do you want to help? We are always looking for volunteers to help with our programs. In particular,if you want to share a favourite recipe in our cookingclasses, or be a mentor contact me (Jenny).

Get in touch: for registration, to volunteer, or if youhave any questions, get in touch via email at [email protected] or leave amessage at 604.200.0539.

Book for Discussion: “The JewStore” by Stella Suberman

In 1920, in small-town America, theubiquitous dry goods store--suits andcoats, shoes and hats, work clothes andschool clothes, yard goods and notions--was usually owned by Jews and oftenreferred to as "the Jew store." That'show Stella’s father's store in Concordia,Tennessee, was known locally. TheBronsons were the first Jews to everlive there (1920 population: 5,318) of one mainstreet, one bank, one drugstore, one picture show, one feed and seed, one hardware, one barber shop, one beauty parlor, one blacksmith, and manyChristian churches. Her father, Aaron Bronson, borninto poverty in prerevolutionary Russia andorphaned from birth, finds his way to America, findsa trade, finds a wife, and sets out to find his fortunein a place where Jews are unwelcome.

With a novelist's sense of scene, suspense, and above all, characteriza-tion, Stella Suberman turns the clockback to a time when rural America wasmore peaceful but no less prejudiced, when educated liberals were suspect, and when the Klan was threatening tooutsiders. She brings to life herremarkable father, a man whose ownbrand of success proves that intelli-gence, empathy, liberality, and decencycan build a home anywhere.
