and the secondary stage of ‘interpretation’ are necessary, but we run into trouble when the order is reversed. When people become fixated on their interpretation of reality, they end up pressing God, the world and other people into theservice of their own agenda. There’s something I find to be offensive about that.
When devout Christians talk about salvation, I understand them to be describing an intimate, loving relationship with the transcendent. Their passion for and devotion to Godinspires me. But the mythic narrative through which theyinterpret their experience becomes a problem when it causes them to believe that their path to salvation is the only path.
In a similar way, Islam provides its adherents with a beautifulway of being in relationship with the transcendent. Someof my best friends are Sufis. However, there is a mythicnarrative within Islam which causes its adherents to believe that their path is the only path. When they come to regard outsiders as ‘infidels,’ we end up with the crisis we now see playing itself out on a global scale.
The same dynamic occurs in our own religion, though with a bit less aggression toward outsiders since most Orthodox Jews have no interest in converting non-Jews. When it comes to relations within the Jewish community, fundamentalists believe that their way of thinking represents the definitiveinterpretation of how to be a Jew. They are convincedthat their way is the only way for a Jew to be in an authenticrelationship with God. Any other interpretations are, at best, misguided.
Our Jewish narrative, and the principles we derive from it, are precious. However, we must also acknowledge that (1)all human beings have the capacity to be in relationship

Rabbi M. Thomas Heyn
RABBI’S MESSAGEREBUILDING THE TEMPLE
There’s an old story about Reb Levi Yitzchak (1740-1809), an early Hasidic rabbi from the Ukrainian town of Berditchev. When his son was engaged to be married, he excitedly sent out invitations to everyone he knew announcing that thecelebration would take place in Jerusalem on such-and-such a date and time. In small print at the bottom of the invitation,he added: If, G-d forbid, the messiah has not yet arrived, the wedding will be held on the same date and time here inBerditchev.
I have long been inspired by this kind of faith and optimism that is so prevalent in the lives of Hasidic rabbis and their students. I was reminded of this during a recent visit to Israel where, especially in Jerusalem, I encountered many devoutly-religious people. While standing at the kotel (the Western Wall), I stood alongside hundreds of them as they prayedfervently for the coming of the Messiah and for therebuilding of the Temple.
I was fascinated by the way they went about their lives as though I didn’t exist, even though I was standing next to them. It somehow felt like there was a huge chasmbetween us, yet I wondered how that was possible since we both practice the same religion. I then realized that there is apivotal difference between the principles that inform their faith and the principles that inform my own.
The principles that inform their faith are rooted in anarrative we both share as a frame of reference: that we are the descendants of Abraham and that we have a specialrelationship with God which is defined by the Torah given to Moses at Sinai. However, as non-Orthodox Jews, we willonly see ourselves as lesser versions of our Orthodoxcoreligionists until we understand that this narrative, whether it has any historical basis or not, is part of an even larger story.
The principles of my religious faith are rooted in a story that includes all races, nations and faith traditions because itencompasses the history of humankind as I came tounderstand it through the study of comparative religion, sociology and developmental psychology. The mostfundamental principle of my faith is this: that all religions originate from the human encounter with a transcendent reality.
For such encounters to have any lasting value, they must be interpreted and communicated through language, symbol, myth and metaphor. Both the primary stage of ‘encounter’ Continued on page 13
with the transcendent and (2) any Jew desiring to be in anauthentic relationship with God can do so outside ofa traditionalist framework. Broadening our view in this way will help bring abouta paradigm shift no lesssignificant than one that took place 2,000 years ago.
At that time, the ancient

Early on in my career, I heard a beautiful sermon from Rabbi Ed Farber. The long and short of it was “If you had an empty seat next to you during the High Holy Days, who would you like to sit there?” I thought about it for a while as, at that time, both my parents were alive and I had 2 grandparents who were still living. Would it be a famous person? Would it be someone anonymous? Would it be a grandparent who had passed away?
This August 9th marked the 5th anniversary of my father’s passing. He died suddenly while watching a movie in a theater. There is no question, that if I had an extra seat next to me this High Holy Days, I’d want him sitting there. He created so many memories for me and my brothers that I truly miss him each and every day. He got me involved in synagogue life early on through Jr. Congregation, riding to Shiva homes in the “Mitzvah Mobile”, making sure I stayed in Hebrew School even though my Little League game was starting in 5 minutes. We could wear our uniforms to Hebrew School but could not leave early. He even taught me about “DNA”. Back then it meant Do Not Announce at Bond Breakfasts. Today it has a different meaning.
Most of all, my greatest memory of my father was that he loved to sing. I talked about this during the eulogy I gave at his funeral. Whether it was making up words to songs to make us laugh or just sitting in the back of the synagogue singing as loud as possible either to bother the Cantor or to encourageothers to participate, he loved to sing. He truly helped give me my love of singing which I have now shared with myfamily. We love going to Broadway shows and our girls can be seen on stages throughout South Florida performing and singing to their hearts content.
And now this brings me to Temple Israel. Temple Israel sings. I have experienced this joy from the first Shabbat I attended with Cantorial Soloist Jen Benrey, through the Ellen Allard weekend, to the night of the Annual Dinner back in June where the 2nd Avenue Chorale performed, with my mother singing with the group. All of this led by our amazing musical director Dr. Alan Mason. The Rabbi sings. Everyone sings. Music fills the air at Temple Israel.
I have always heard it’s hard to find a home away from home, especially working in the world in which I work. But the love and passion shown here at Temple Israel is amazing. It brings back so many memories of my childhood through song that it inspires me each and every day.
Dear Temple Israel family... I’m back! Why on earth would anyone want to be President, AGAIN?
I used to hear that the two greatest words a President loves to hear is
“Past President.” I never felt that.
I love being President of Temple Israel of Greater Miami, I love the Temple and I’m glad to be back!
Now, I don’t have the ability to lower your taxes, set theminimum wage, or get an immigration policy passed. What I can do is help provide you with an opportunity to be involved in the best Temple in South Florida.
Temple Israel is a welcoming, all-inclusive community with an exciting new year ahead of us. We are reaching out to new families, implementing new programs and ideas, and exploring new topics of interest. I invite you to experience Temple Israel at its best, join us, get involved, bring a friend (membershipis everyone’s responsibility). Take a new class, attend acongregational dinner, sponsor an oneg, volunteer, learn something new about yourself!
Because YOU love the Temple, it is up to YOU to get involved and help build our congregation, and with your help, this will be a year of celebration!
I am honored to lead our congregation down a new path,a new year and a new experience. But, we need you tocontribute your “fair share” and maybe more if you have the ability and desire.
Thank you for helping keep our doors wide open. My door is always open to you. Doug

Alan MasonDirector of Music and
Doctor of Musical Arts
It is hard to predict when the moment will occur that I take my High Holiday music off the shelf and begin the inspiring processof preparing for this year’s Days of Awe. This year it was anunassuming June afternoon, when without premeditation, Iinstinctively went to the shelf and dusted off the three binders that are labeled Rosh Hashana, Kol Nidre, and Yom Kippur. Each binder contains the music we “always do,” the music we “used to do,” and the music I “would like to do.”
A MUSICAL INTERLUDE
My preparation is a three-fold process: first I sit at the desk and just look through everything, then a few days later itis all spread out on the dining room table and I relearn thepagination of the prayer book in coordination with the music, and finally, I sit at the piano and play through everything.
The professional choir rehearses every Tuesday andThursday, always beginning the day after Labor Day, and working together for a month. it is a very enjoyable time, filled with laughter, singing, storytelling, experimenting, teaching, learning, and each choir member is encouraged to offer suggestions and guidance. We examine texts, trans-lations, tempos, moods, styles, and musical structure. The singers tell me it’s the most enjoyable month of their year. And just as the High Holidays end, and my music gets stored for another year, the members of professional choir return to their church positions and start preparing their music for Christmas. These singers are privileged to perform the world’s most glorious music during the fall season.
Best wishes for a Happy and Healthy New Year. L’shana Tova.

Keep singing Temple Israel. And make sure you sing loud
enough on the High Holy Days so if there is an empty seat next to you, and you know who you would like sitting there, they will hear you sing and you will think of them.
Gloria, Stephanie, Lauren and I want to wish everyone a Healthy and Happy New Year. May each of you be inscribed in the Book of Life for this and many years to come.
The Seventh Annual Winter Jewish Music Concert will take place on Saturday evening, January 10, 2015 at 8pm in the Bertha Abess Sanctuary. Log onto www.jewishconcert.org for ticket information.
want to ensure that the music, the chants, the sermons, the prayers and the celebrations all lead us to a greaterconnection with each other and with our Jewish heritage. And we want Temple Israel to be the warmest and most welcoming Jewish community in our area.
To these ends we have supported holiday classes andcelebrations; encouraged experimentation and differentexperiences in both our Friday evening and Saturdaymorning services; supported development of adult Hebrew classes, Talmud study, and Mussar classes; helped develop a new Shoah Seder that will take place next January; and worked on a welcoming booklet setting forth our expectations and offerings for B’nei Mitzvot and their families.
The core reason for belonging to a temple is to sharemeaningful Jewish spiritual experiences within a community. Everything the Religious Affairs Committee does is aimed at deepening those experiences, and creating a knowledgeable community that supports them. As we move into the High Holy Days we are reminded even more of our need to share beautiful religious rituals and traditions with our TempleIsrael family.
In the coming year our committee will be meeting on the first Tuesday evenings of each month, and would welcomeparticipation by everyone who would like to contribute to these efforts. Come join us!
Diane LindnerChair
After a busy year, the Religious Affairs Committee is lookingforward to enjoying the resultsof their work in the months ahead. As you might imagine, we’vebeen involved in evaluating andtrying to enrich all the spiritualofferings of the temple. We hope to make all the services deeper and more fulfilling, and to involve more of our members in participating in them in a meaningful way. We

ADULT LEARNINGWEEKLY LEARNING
Tuesday Noontime Learning w/Rabbi Heyn:The class will focus on “The Life, Legacy and Teachings of Reb Zalman.”
Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi passed away onJuly 3, 2014 but his far-reaching influence in theJewish world and beyond lives on. “Reb Zalman,” as he is affectionately known by his students, was originally trained as an Orthodox rabbi but his contact withcollege students during the 1960s, and hisexperimentation with psychedelics, enabled him to translate and transmit the depth and joy of Jewish spirituality in ways that new generations of Jews could understand. Although he is regarded as one of the founders of the “Jewish Renewal movement,” many of his innovations have been adopted within the Reform, Conservative and Reconstructionist movements. Our Tuesday class will learn about those innovations and the reasons why they are so important in the Jewish world and in our own lives.
The class will resume in September and will meetat noon on Tuesdays, September 9, 16, 23 and 30.

RABBI’S MESSAGE
Temple was believed by our ancestors to be the only place where they could be in direct relationship with the Divine. When the Temple was destroyed, the dominant way ofthinking changed to allow for that direct relationship tocontinue, albeit in a different form – through prayer and study. An old view of what was required to be in relationship with God was replaced by a new one. Now, in our age, another shift of this magnitude is taking place.
When I heard prayers being recited for the rebuilding of the Temple there at the kotel, I could not join my prayer with theirs. I do not seek to return to a pre-modern, theocraticState, nor do I seek a cataclysmic confrontation withfundamentalist Muslims who cling passionately to their own mythic narratives. Such adherence to traditional views, on both sides of the conflict, inevitably leads to violence and destruction on a global scale. What is needed is a paradigm shift in which progressive and inclusive religious philosophies come to replace the old mythic ones.
As I stood before the kotel, the Temple stood before me as a symbol of our capacity to live each day in direct relationship with a transcendent reality. My prayer was that we mightrebuild whatever structures are needed for that relationshipto be nourished. And I prayed that the paradigm shiftnecessary for that to happen was well-underway.
When I returned home to Temple Israel to see our beautiful campus, our pluralistic congregation, and our exciting scheduleof classes, programs and services, I could see that my prayers were already being answered. We are the builders of that Temple.
“As I stood before the kotel, the Temple stood before me as a symbol of our capacity to live each day in direct relationship with a transcendent reality.”

The Dorothy Serotta Social Justice Forum will be sponsoring a program concerning alternatives to suspension of studentsin the public school system. Inspired by its participation this year in PACT (People Acting for Community Together),a coalition of Miami-Dade churches and synagogues, the committee became aware of the issue of children suspended from school for various infractions, and left on their own. Many organizations are asking the School Board to adopt an alternative approach involving discipline that would keep students in school while reducing criminal behavior.
Speaking on this issue will be Miami-Dade School Board member Raquel Regalado, and Christine Henderson, representing the Southern Poverty Law Center. Both speakers have been involved with this important issue. Ways in which members of the congregation can volunteer in the schools will also be discussed.
Please join us for this very important social justice hour on Yom Kippur, Saturday, October 4, 2014.

...........................................................................................................................................................................................Kaddish
May God’s name be exalted and hallowed throughout the world that He created, as is God’s wish.May God’s sovereignty soon be accepted, during our life and the life of all Israel. And let us say: Amen.
May God’s great name be praised throughout all time. Glorified and celebrated, lauded and worshiped, exalted and honored, extolled and acclaimed may the Holy One be, praised beyond all song and psalm, beyond all tributes that mortals can utter.
And let us say: Amen.Let there be abundant peace from heaven, with life’s goodness for us and for all Israel. And let us say: Amen.
May the One who brings peace to His universe bring peace to us and to all Israel. And let us say: Amen.Zichrona L’vracha, May their memory be for a blessing.
