    Your Ten Bodies and Yoga

By Siri Atma Singh Khalsa, M.D.

You may believe that youhave one body to care for, but, in fact, each of us hasten bodies. The physicalbody is just one of thosebodies. The other nine are:the soul body, the threemental bodies (negativemind, positive mind and

neutral mind), the arc line, the aura, the pranic body, the subtle body and theradiant body. Each of the tenbodies is significantlyinteractive with the others. When we see the humanform as composed of tenbodies, we can understandthe dynamic interactivenature of the differentaspects of our humanness

and optimize their functionand health through yoga.

The soul is our timelessbody that contains our being, consciousness andpersonality. The negativemind calculates risk. Thepositive mind calculates

    benefit. The neutral mind

compares risk and benefit.(The mind is alwayscalculating, isnt it?) The arcline is the halo around usthat guides and controls ouraura. The aura is theelectromagnetic body thatprotects us from otherpeoples negativity and givesus sensitivity to ourenvironment. The pranicbody gives life to the

physical body and isconnected to it through thebreath. The subtle body isconnected to the soul bodyand gives us the capacity tolearn quickly and relate tothe nuances of life. Finally, the radiant body gains itsradiance from the activity ofthe other bodies, and when itis well proportioned isperceived as courage and

    magnetic attraction.

One definition of yoga is thescience of angles andtriangles. These angles andtriangles affect theelectromagnetic field aroundour body, i.e., the aura andarc line. Yoga is also thescience of breath, in whichwe use the lungs and pranicbody to charge the aura and

the arc line. Positiveadjustments in our aura andarc line shift the focus of ourawareness and, thus, thethoughts that we payattention to. While yoga canbe used simply to produce avibrant and healthy physicalbody, a positive shift in our

    awareness improves the

way we think, communicateand perceive life.

If we consider allcommunication to be a formof thought, we can see thateach cell within our body isalive with a perceptive andcommunicative intelligence. We call this cell-to-cellcommunication. Allneurological activity falls

under the category of cell-to-cell communication.

Awareness then is not thecommunication itself but thatsubset of communication onwhich our attention focuses. Each of the ten bodiesintercommunicates with thesame degree of complexityas the cells and organs inthe physical body. We canuse asana and pranayam

(postures and breath).Through interconnectivity, changes in these bodiesresult in new mentalelectrical and glandularactivity that results in a shiftof awareness. We canattempt to shift the focus ofour awareness with thoughtcontrol, but because wehave not also adjusted theaura and arc line, such

    changes are fleeting ratherthan sustained.

Continual practice of yogastrengthens all ten bodies.

As we practice yoga, we getglimpses into realities thatwe would like to manifestpermanently in our lives. If

we use breath and thepranic body to makepermanent changes in theaura and arc line, we willprocure permanent changein our perceptual reality.

These changes can cure allmanner of drug dependency, perversion, delusion, neurosis and mental illness. If we strengthen the subtlebody, our awareness willshift so that we focus on thevoice of our soul. When wefocus on the communicationfrom our soul, we focus onthe purpose of life--resolvingthe soul conflict that created

    the ego.

The ego is not an imbalanceof this life but of lifetimes. When the individual souldoes not recognize therelationship between atma(the Self) and parmatma (thesupreme Self), the egoforms to guarantee eternallife. The ego voice is filledwith threats and fears telling

us, If you dont take thisaction today, there is notelling what manner of pain

you will suffer in the future.Conversely, the soul voicespeaks of right and wrongand stays in the moment, saying, This is the rightaction for this momentor

This action is wrong for thismoment.Strengthening theradiant body gives us thecourage to act according tothe voice of the soul.

Our physical life andphysical body offer theultimate testing ground forour spiritual awareness. Thefear of death or thedissolution of being is what

created the ego in the firstplace. Sacrifice is oftendefined as action takenagainst the advice of theego. When the mentalbodies come under thecontrol of the soul, theycalculate how to nurture anduplift all souls, not just theindividual soul.

    When we keep our ten

bodies in balance, the wholeuniverse will be in balancewith us. We can share with

others the unseen worldaround us and manifest intothe finite world that whichwas unseen. When webalance our ten bodies, welive the healthiest, happiest

and most sacred of liveswhile on this planet.
