Dear Parents and Tenby Community,

We are pleased to announce that Tenby Schools Malaysia was awarded the Readers Digest Trusted Brands Gold Award 2016 where our brand was voted by consumers. The award ceremo-ny was held on Tuesday 24th May at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. Mark Parkin-son (Chief Executive Officer) received our award on behalf of Tenby Schools. It was indeed a very proud moment.

Seatbelt Campaign UpdateMany thanks to the Tenby Community for making this such a success. For primary students, the class that has belted up the most over the three weeks of monitoring (one from national and one from international) will be treated to a Pizza Party. For secondary students, the deadline for infomercials is today. These will be judged by the first Committee on Friday 10th June where a winner will be selected. We hope that the belt up message will continue following this month’s drive.

Campaign 2 – Distracted Driving (Month of June)The next SAFE STEPS topic will be on distracted driving and will last through the month of June. The theme for distracted driving will be ‘STAY FOCUSSED. DRIVE SAFE.' We will launch the message to students via their assemblies after half-term.

Form the second week of June, primary students will have a sheet where they will ‘sign off’ their parents on their way to school and back home – monitoring whether their parent has adhered to the distracted driving rules. Parents with the most ‘sign offs’ from their child will be rated ‘Star of the Week’ and their name (photograph is optional) will be put up in class. The parents who have followed the distracted driving rules will receive a certificate from the school at the end of the month.

The distracted driving messages will be carried through the weekly assemblies for secondary students. The last assembly at the end of the month will end with a quiz on distracted driving led by the Senior Prefects.

Drop Off and Pick Up at the Primary Block (From Andrew Hamilton: Primary Assistant Head Pastoral)Drop-off and pick-up can be a very busy time in the school day as hundreds of students are being picked up around the school campus. We would ask that you please remain patient as students are being picked up or dropped off to avoid any potential incidents like cars colliding or vehicles knocking down pedestrians. It is important that we all cooperate with each other and ensure we keep the Tenby community safe, particularly the students.

Furthermore, we would greatly appreciate that parents/guardians/drivers on campus remain in vehicles during these times to avoid congestion. If you need to enter the building at peak hours, we encourage you to park off-site and walk in to ensure the traffic continues to flow. Thank you to those members of the community that are already doing this.

Temporary Change of CCA VenuesPlease be informed that the Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH) will be used for the Year 10 Mock Examinations from Monday13th June until Friday 17th June.

All CCAs conducted in the MPH will be moved to other venues for the period Monday 13th June to Thursday 16th June and the new venues are as follows:

1. Monday 13th June , Primary & Secondary Table Tennis – Auditorium2. Monday 13th June, Secondary Aerobic & Fitness – Auditorium3. Tuesday 14th June, Secondary Badminton School Team – Taman Meru Community Hall4. Wednesday 15th June, Primary Badminton School Team – Taman Meru Community Hall5. Amendment to Sports Days for Secondary and PrimaryThe Ministry of Education’s ban on outdoor activities continues to date. As such, we need to postpone the Second-ary Sports Day to July. At the same time the Primary Sports Day is also brought forward one day earlier, so that it will fall on a normal school day to tie in with International Week. The final dates are:

• Secondary Sports Day – Tuesday 12th July• Primary Sports Day – Friday 15th July

Both the sports day will coincide with the International Week which starts on Monday 11th July to Friday 15th July. The theme for the Sports Days will be based on The Olympics as this year’s Olympics will be hosted by Brazil in August.

Reminder: Birthday Parties (From the Tenby Schools Parents & Students Handbook, Page 18)Students are not allowed to have birthday parties in school. However, cupcakes can be contributed. These may be consumed during Break or Lunch, provided students have eaten their meal. To clarify, no party bags, gifts, additional food e.g. pizza should be given to students either. Parents wishing to do this need to make their own party arrangements outside of school hours.

International Secondary Photo SessionWhen we return after the mid-term break, International Secondary students will have their photo sessions on Tuesday 7th June and Wednesday 8th June. Circulars have been handed out today with the schedule. All students should be present in school and must be properly attired in school uniform (not PE Kit) for the classphotographs.

We would like to wish students, parents and teachers Happy Holidays, we will see you back in school on Monday 6th June.

News from Tenby Early Years Centre Ipoh

Numeracy Week (23rd May to 27th May 2016)

“One, two, three, four, five, once I caught a fish alive”. “One, two, Buckle my shoe”, “Five little

monkeys jumping on the bed, One fell off and bumped his head”. These were rhymes and songs

which was heard around the classrooms during this Numeracy Week. Different kinds of activities

were organised by the teachers and the children had a great time answering number quiz, playing

hopscotch, making clocks and number scavenger hunt.

With the mid-term break starting from 28th May – 5th June 2016, the Early Years Team wishes all

of you “A Very Happy Mid-Term Break” and get rested well.

Sneak – a – Peek

Toddlers

This week the Toddlers enjoyed a story session with their teachers titled “Enormous Turnip”. Upon

listening to the story, they pretended and acted out the characters in the story during their role-

play.

All the children pulled and pulled and pulled and pulled, but the enormous turnip still

would not budge. Suddenly… out came the turnip from the

ground!!! Later, everyone had a great turnip meal.

Nursery - Little Tulips & Little Daffodils

Little Tulips & Little Daffodils ended their theme “Going Places (Transport)” by going on a bicycle

ride around the school. The children brought in bicycles and other wheel toys for their outdoor

play. They followed the road safety rules, which fell just right as we are embarking the Safe Steps

Campaign.

NEWS FROM INTERNATIONAL PRIMARY

YEAR 3 LEARNING ASSEMBLY

Parents of Year 3 students were invited to attend our learning assembly at the Auditorium

last Friday 20th May. The Learning Assembly was about ‘Earthquakes and Volcanoes’,

which was the IPC Topic for the Year 3 students.

This assembly featured interesting facts about earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis

where students themselves were involved in preparing the performances. The

performances were planned to bring out the talents of our students through speech,

drama, presentation and dance.

The Assembly began with a series of facts about the ten most active volcanoes in the

world. The students of Year 3 Yellow spent about two weeks researching, planning and

making the presentation. On the day of the Assembly, the students proudly made their

presentation to everyone!

The next performance was by the Year 3 Green students. It was about a play

entitled ‘Yuuki and The Tsunami’. The play was about a girl named Yuuki who

lived in a village with her parents. She missed her grandfather who had passed

away several years before. He had taught Yuuki about rice crops, solving

disputes and he was a respected, wealthy headman of the village. He told Yuuki

many tsunami stories and when her village was struck by small tremors, Yuuki

realised that a tsunami was coming and being a wise girl, she saved her village

by burning rice stakes in order for her villagers to go to the mountain to save their

lives.

The Year 3 Blue pupils performed a simulation of what could possibly happen during an

earthquake. Different settings were set up which included an office, a home, a shopping

mall, a classroom and a restaurant. The students were assigned to their respective

settings and all of a sudden, an earthquake happened. The students also performed

emergency relief scenarios. In groups, they role played victims, helpers, doctors, nurses,

and also reporters who acted out a scene in the disaster relief centre.

For the finale, the Year 3 students performed a song to the teachers in conjunction with

Teacher’s Day which fell on 16th May. They sang “In This Moment” wholeheartedly and

at the end of the song, some children presented origami tulips and birds as token of

appreciation to all the teachers in the Auditorium.

In the past week, Year 6 Blue have been conducting mock

courtroom trials during lessons.

This activity helps the students to increase their proficiency in

interpersonal skills such as listening and cooperating, and

basic skills such as reading, writing, speaking, analysing and

reasoning. By partaking in these mock trials, they are able to

increase their critical thinking skills, oral skills, teamwork

skills, confidence and poise.

to understand

the legal system

better- from the

rules of evidence

to proper court

decorum. This

increases

awareness of the

importance of

law in a

democratic society and strengthens the understanding of their

fundamental rights. In addition, they are given an opportunity

to think about how society resolves its disputes and to

measure the fairness of those decisions.

We started with the case of ‘The State

versus Mr Kingsman’ where the

defendant (Mr Kingsman) was accused

with the murder of Humpty Dumpty!

The prosecution went on to present

their case and argue why Mr

Kingsman was guilty and caused

Humpty Dumpty to fall of the wall. The

defence had to prove why Mr

Kingsman was innocent of the accused

crime. Both teams gave good

persuasive arguments but the jury

voted that the defendant was guilty!

NEWS FROM INTERNATIONAL SECONDARY

Post Checkpoint Science Activities

As the Checkpoint assessment concluded in mid- April, the Science department planned a variety of activities

for the Year 9 students. This was to evoke curiosity and encourage greater participation amongst the students

in this subject. The activities also gave more opportunities for the students to see how Science concepts taught

are applied in daily life situations.

In the first two weeks of the program, water was the main focus of the activities planned. In these two weeks,

students did the following:

Week 1 & 2: Water Activities (linking with Chemistry)

Watched and discussed videos on Water cycle, Water treatment & Sewage treatment

Prepared water filtration system

Week 3 & 4: Safe Steps & Beyond (linked with Physics)

As an extension to the SAFE STEPS Road Safety Programme that was launched earlier in school, Year 9 students took the programme a few steps further by exploring areas such as:

Slow Down Around Campus, Wear Seat Belts, Wear a Helmet & Avoid Distractions

Linked to these ideas were activities that involved the following:

To look at the effect of speed on a collision. To look at the effect of not wearing a seatbelt during a collision To look at the effect of not wearing a helmet during a collision To see how distractions can cause accidents

Alongside watching some safe steps videos and the effects of collision at high speed and not wearing a seatbelt; students designed their own seatbelt and helmets as well as road safety pamphlets.

Year 9 students brainstormed ideas about the design and material used in making seatbelts and helmets. The ideas were later tested using materials such as the egg carton as the basis of the helmet and strings for the seatbelt.

Week 5 & 6 (linking with Biology)

The Biology learning journey kicked in with its first experiment on extraction of deoxyribonucleic acid

(DNA). Students brought various fruits such as papaya, honeydew, grapes, watermelon, apples and

oranges and a comparison study was done on the outcome of the experiment. There was effective

learning along with excitement taking place as students discovered the genetic material using their

own secret buffer. A few clicks from the class is shown below:

House Dance

Mr Ricky and Ms Stephanie had a hard task in judging some very creative and technical House Dance this week. Students from Y7 to Y13 took part, boys and girls, soloists, duets and ensembles, showing a range of dance styles from street dance to ballet. It was also lovely to see this event well supported by students from all Houses, turning out to cheer their House mates on. Well done to everybody that took part. It was very entertaining and inspiring to see the talent within the school. ‘

MSSPK Bowling 2016

Sangeeta (Year 10 Blue) managed to get Fourth Place (out of 10 participants ) for Under 18 Girls category. The top 6 winners will represent the State in the coming MSSM and Sangeeta was selected to go for training which will be held in June.

MSSD Tennis 2016Tenby students participated in the MSSD Tennis Competition from 24th to 26th May.

2016 TENBY BOARDERS TRIP TO SUNWAY LOST WORLD on 21.05.2016

The Boarders had a fun day at the theme park. We arrived at the park at 10:15hrs with

the rain threatening to spoil our day. Luckily, the rain stopped while we were at the Hot

Springs. We participated in many activities and had a fantastic time.

Time just flew and soon it was time to leave. It was a memorable outing for all the

Boarders. We hope we will have other opportunities to visit places of interest in

Malaysia!

The boarders wish to thank Mrs. Myra Pyne, Mr. Paul Wilson, and Mrs. Susan Manikam

for accompanying us to the Park. And we thank Tenby Schools Ipoh for arranging the

News from…… TENBY SCHOOLS IPOH INTERACT CLUB

Dateline: Tuesday 17th May, 2016

The Interact Leadership Training Seminar (ILTS) was held on Tuesday 17th May 2016 in the auditorium from 15.15hrs till 17.15hrs. The seminar started off with a short speech by President Praenaay, who welcomed the Interactors and Rotarians who were present.

Some 32 interactors, Ms. Bernie and Pn. Siti were present. This seminar was aimed to introduce, explain and motivate Interactors to polish their skills and develop into future leaders.

President Praenaay’s speech was followed by the MC of the event, Mr. Moorthy (Immediate Past President) introducing the speakers for the event, stalwarts of Rotary Club of Greentown, President Mr. Uthayakumar, Mr. (Past President), Rotarians Balasubramaniam (Chartered President), Past Presidents Nachemutu, Nagalingam and Rashpal. Pertinent issues such as “Why a Leader is chosen?” , “How a Leader plays his/her role effectively and efficiently?” , “Setting the passion to the tasks that we do” and “Envisioning tasks before it takes place” were discussed and projected. To add to it, responsibilities of the President, Vice President, Treasurer and Funding Director were also discussed at length.

The first speaker President Mr. Uithayakumar, explained the humble beginnings of the first Rotary Club in Chicago. He also presented the upcoming projects undertaken by the Rotary Club of Greentown.

The second speaker, Mr. Nachemutu Karappannan then encouraged our team to organize more events by explaining all the steps in the process of planning a successful event, and even discussing the possibility future events with the Board. The third speaker Mr. Moorthy, explained the different roles of Board and explained the concept of ‘International Understanding’, an important ideal within Interact and Rotary Clubs.

The fourth and final speaker, Chartered President Mr. Subramaniam, spoke about his origins and his journey to become the first President of the Rotary Club of Greentown. He brought up the important characteristics needed when in the Interact Club using ‘PMA’ (positive mental attitude). Mr. Subramaniam gave such a motivating and lively talk that he had the crowd inspired enough to interact with him.

After the speakers finished their session, the Board of 2016-2017 was invited onto the stage to take their oath and were given their badges. A photo session followed with the Rotary Club, teachers-in-charges and parents.

We look forward to more of such trainings in the future to help build the team.
