Season Opener The Tennessee Vols begin their 115th season with a 6:07 p.m. kickoff at Neyland Stadium against the

Montana Grizzlies. Saturday’s game marks the fi rst-ever meeting between the two schools. Tennessee is 14-0 in home openers all-time vs. teams not currently in a BCS conference. The Vols are beginning the year against an FCS opponent for the second consecutive year and defeated UT Martin 50-0 in the 2010 season opener. Saturday’s game represents the second year in a row the Tennessee football season will open under the

lights at Neyland Stadium and the 31st home opener at night at Neyland Stadium, including the fi rst-ever night game on Sept. 16, 1972, a 28-21 win over No. 6 Penn State (UT was ranked No. 7). The Vols are 28-3 all-time in home openers at night. Tennessee is also opening in Knoxville for the third consecutive year. Tennessee is 84-24-6 (.763) all-time in season openers and 90-18-5 (.819) all-time in home openers. The Montana game begins the second season for Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley. The 2010 UT

squad was 4-3 at home and 6-7 overall, including wins in the last four regular-season games and the last two played at Neyland Stadium.

A Tennessee Win Would... Improve the Vols to 85-24-6 (.765) in season openers and 91-18-5 (.820) in home openers all-time. Extend Tennessee’s regular-season winning streak to fi ve games, dating back to a 50-14 win at Memphis

on Nov. 6, 2010. Five games would mark the longest regular season winning streak for the Vols since they won their last fi ve to end the regular season in 2007. Improve the all-time record for the Tennessee football program to 790-340-53 (.690). Extend the Vols’ home winning streak to three games. Give Tennessee its seventh consecutive win over an unranked Division I FBS opponent at home, dating

back to a 45-19 win over Georgia on Oct. 10, 2009. Mark the 16th consecutive win for the Vols in season openers played in Knoxville, a streak that began with

a 35-21 win over New Mexico on Sept. 6, 1986. It would also mark the 17th consecutive win in home openers. Improve UT to 9-5 in its last 14 non-SEC games, dating to a 35-3 win over UAB on Sept. 13, 2008.

See You in September The Vols are 56-22-2 in September over the last 21 seasons since 1990, but are 7-9 during the month

over the last four years since 2007, including 2-2 marks each of the last two years and in 2007, plus a 1-3 September in 2008. A winning September would signal a return to a previous trend in which Tennessee posted winning

Saturday’s game is the fi rst-ever meeting be-tween Tennessee and Montana, as well as the Vols’ initial meeting against any member of the currently constructed Big Sky conference. The Sept. 3 contest also marks UT’s earliest sea-son opener since 2008 (9/1 vs. UCLA) and earliest home opener since 2006 (9/2 vs. California). UT is 84-24-6 (.763) in season openers dating back to 1891. In the last 25 seasons, Tennessee

is 22-3-2 (.852) in season openers. Of those 27 games, 14 were played against teams not current-ly in a BCS conference, and the Vols are a perfect 14-0 in those contests. The Vols have been even more dominant in home openers, going 90-18-5 (.819) all-time in the fi rst game at Neyland Stadium each season. Ten-nessee has won 16 consecutive home openers dating to the 1994 season.

Up Next Next Saturday (Sept. 10), the Vols will host the Cincinnati Bearcats at Neyland

Stadium. The two teams will play for the fi rst time since 1992, a 40-0 Tennessee win in Knoxville. UT owns a 4-1 edge in the series, and all fi ve games have been played in Knoxville (1904, 1919, 1941, 1942 and 1992). Tennessee is playing a member of the currently constructed BIG EAST for the

fi rst time since Sept. 28, 2002, when the Vols defeated Rutgers 35-14 in Knoxville. The Vols are 15-4 (.789) all-time against current BIG EAST members. Cincinnati’s 18 returning starters are tied for the second-most the Vols will face

Starting Lineup The projected starters on the depth chart for the Tennessee season opener

vs. Montana include seven returning off ensive starters: QB Tyler Bray, TB Tauren Poole, FB Channing Fugate, LT Dallas Thomas, C James Stone, RG Zach Fulton, and RT Ja’Wuan James. Additionally, the Vols will likely open on defense with four returning starters: DT Malik Jackson, CB Marsalis Teague, FS Prentiss Wag-gner, and SS Brent Brewer.

New Faces Against Montana, the Vols are slated to start two true freshmen at linebacker

in Curt Maggitt (pronounced Muh-JITT) at the SAM and A.J. Johnson at the WILL. It is believed that Tennessee has not started a true freshman at any of the linebacker positions in the season opener since freshman eligibility was reinstated in 1972. LCB Justin Coleman is the fi rst true freshman to start in the secondary in the

season opener for the Vols since Eric Berry in 2007 at California. If Maggitt, Johnson, and Coleman all start as projected on Saturday, it would

mark the fi rst time the Vols have started three freshmen in the season opener since the 2005 opener vs. UAB, when Ramon Foster (LG), Robert Meachem (WR), and Britton Colquitt (P) all started. QB Tyler Bray is the fi rst sophomore to start the season opener at quarter-

Chasing History Senior tailback Tauren Poole’s SEC lead-tying six

100-yard rushing games in 2010 were the fourth most in UT single-season history. With four more 100-yard games, Poole will enter the top fi ve chart for career 100-yard games. Last season, Poole became just the 15th tailback

at Tennessee to top the 1,000-yard rushing thresh-old. He can become just the second UT tailback to do it twice by repeating his performance this sea-son. Johnnie Jones is the only other Vol to rush for two 1,000-yard seasons, recording a 1,290-yard ef-fort in 1984 and a 1,116-yard performance in 1983.

Sept. 2, 2006 - UT 35, California 18 (Knoxville) The highest-ranked opponent to come into Knoxville for a season-opener since UCLA was also No. 9 in 1978, the 23rd-ranked Vols jumped out to a 35-0 lead in front of a frenzied crowd for a dominating performance...Erik Ainge was 11-of-18 for 291 yards and four touchdowns, including an 80-yard strike to Robert Meachem and a 50-yard toss to Jayson Swain to begin the second half...Meachem was also the recipient of a 42-yard TD pass that put the Vols ahead 14-0 at halftime...Cal scored the fi nal 18 points of the game after things had been decided...Jerod Mayo had all three UT sacks, while the defense picked off two passes...Heis-man candidate Marshawn Lynch was held to 76 yards...The crowd was just as impressive causing Cal QB Nate Longshore to say this afterwards: “It’s static noise. UT will open with an FCS team for the second-consecutive year, after becoming the last SEC team since the '92 expansion to play a I-AA member last season. The Vols are 14-0 in home openers all-time vs. teams not currently in a BCS conference. Tennessee has won 15 consecutive season openers played in Knoxville and 14 of the last 16 overall lidlifters. In the last two season openers, the Vols have outscored their opponents 113-7, and have only allowed a total of 7 points in the last three combined fi rst halves.

The Vols have topped 500 yards of off ense in three of their last fi ve openers. In fi ve of the last six season starters, the Vols have held their opponents to less than 100 yards rushing. It’s all in the details for Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley, who spent his fi rst sea-son at Rocky Top laying the foundation on which to support his long-term vision of suc-cess for Tennessee football.

With his energetic personality, meticulous approach and belief in the dedication to both the character and on-fi eld development of the student-athlete, Dooley, 43, was able to refocus, reshape and rebrand the Volunteer program in one short year.

After being hired as Tennessee’s 22nd head football coach on January 15, 2010, Dooley had less than three weeks to assem-ble his staff and put the fi nishing touches on his fi rst of two consecutive recruiting classes ranked in the top 12 nationally. The momentum generated during those early weeks continued to build throughout the 2010 season, as Dooley piloted the Vols to a bowl game, redesigned the now under construction $40-million, state-of-the-art football training facility, established a new academic accountability system and developed the Vol For Life (VFL) comprehensive player support and character education program, a four-year curriculum that focuses on the often-overlooked personal growth of the student-athlete.

This increased commitment to excellence in all facets of the program provided the framework that helped the Vols exceed expectations on the fi eld in Dooley’s fi rst season at the helm. Despite serving as the third head coach of the Tennessee football team in a 15-month period and competing roughly 15-20 scholarship players below the established scholarship limit of 85, Dooley led his fi rst Vols squad to four consecutive November wins, an appearance in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl against North Carolina, and a 6-7 fi nish.

Dooley was the head coach at Louisiana Tech during the 2007-09 seasons and also doubled as the school’s athletic director from 2008-09. As the head coach of the football team, Dooley’s tenure was highlighted by an 8-5 mark in 2008, in-

cluding the school’s fi rst postseason victory in 30 years at the Independence Bowl and only the third bowl game since 1989.

Dooley played college football at Virginia, catching 41 passes for 604 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Cav-aliers to three bowl appearances and the 1989 Atlantic Coast Conference championship and graduating in 1990. He then earned his law degree from the University of Georgia in 1994 and subsequently practiced law at a private fi rm in Atlanta for two years. He then switched gears and returned to his love of football, beginning his coaching career in 1996 as a graduate assistant at Georgia and then spending three years at SMU from 1997-99 as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.

Dooley then coached at LSU under Nick Saban from 2000-04, with the Tigers winning SEC championships in 2003-04 and the BCS national championship in 2003. Dooley then served as the tight ends coach for Miami Dolphins from 2005-06.

Dooley is married to Dr. Allison Jeff ers Dooley, an OB/GYN and Fort Worth, Texas, native. They have two sons, John Tay-lor (12) and Peyton (9) and a daughter, Julianna (7).

Tennessee only made one coaching staff change af-ter the 2010 season. In February, the Vols named Peter Sirmon as linebackers coach and moved Lance Thomp-son to defensive line coach, replacing Chuck Smith. Among all coaching staff s in Division I FBS, the

Vols rank 11th in total NFL experience (coaching or playing) with 32 years. The UT staff also ranks 9th in NFL coaching experience at 23 years. Both totals rank second in the SEC, trailing only Florida. In terms of individual NFL coaching experience,

only fi ve college coaches have more NFL coaching experience than Tennessee associate head coach/receivers coach Charlie Baggett, who coached in the league for 13 seasons.

Derek Dooley enters his second season as UT’s head coach. A total of 15 coaches have seen a second season on Rocky Top and eight of those have seen an improve-ment in their second-year records compared to their fi rst. All-time, UT coaches are 92-44-11 (.663) in their second season at the helm. Adding to the overall improvement, two coaches have won conference championships at UT in their second seasons. Bowden Wyatt led the Vols to an SEC Championship in 1956, while General Neyland coached UT to a Southern Conference Championship in 1927.

The Best Just Got BetterThe Home of the Vols got a makeover, transform-

ing one of college football’s meccas into an aesthetic masterpiece. The concrete walls that used to hold up the west side were replaced with brick. Below the press box, six new panels display some of the fi nest to ever don the Orange and White-- Al Wilson, Gen. Robert R. Neyland, Reggie White, Peyton Man-ning, Johnny Majors and Doug Atkins.

Most noticeable from the outside are the approxi-mately 700,000 bricks that totally transformed the look of the stadium’s north and west sides. Standing in the middle of that transformation is the majestic Gate 21 plaza area.

Six lofty archways dominate the entrance, which doubles during the work week as a key campus trans-portation hub. No doubt the traffi c on game days is just as hectic.

Adjacent to the Gate 21 plaza is another change, the new amphitheater at the corner of Phillip Fulmer Way and Andy Holt Avenue. The Vol Network’s Kickoff Call-In Show takes place there, sporting spiff y new digs after spending years on a make-shift platform in front of a worn down hillside.

Just inside Gate 21, the Tennessee Offi cial Team Shop is open for business six days a week under man-agement of the UT Bookstore. Four other souvenir locations are located throughout the stadium, includ-ing one in an exclusive new seating area.

One of the greatest coaches in the history of the game of football, Gen. Robert Reese Ney-

land is still, and will most likely always be, the yardstick by which all Tennessee football coaches are measured. For 21 years, he led the Big Orange to win after win and championship after champi-onship. His 173 wins, seven conference titles and four national championships set the bar at one of the nation’s fi nest football institutions.

According to UT legend Gus Manning, no one summed up Neyland and his coaching abil-ity better than Wallace Wade:

The Coaches’ ChallengeThe head coach may challenge the ruling of any reviewable play. He retains a

challenge if his initial challenge is successful and thus results in a reversal by the re-play offi cial. The head coach will then have a single challenge that he may use any-time during the game if his team has not used all its timeouts. Thus a team may have a total of two challenges in the game, but only if the fi rst results in a reversal of the on-fi eld ruling.

The SourceAll reviewable video comes direct from either the television network broadcast-

ing the game or other TV production facilities that meet established conference standards. The SEC has used instant replay since 2005.

The Plays Reviewable

1. Plays governed by Sideline, Goal Line, End Zone, and End Line:

a. Scoring Plays, including the ball in possession of a runner breaking the plane of the goal line

b. Runner/receiver in or out of boundsc. Recovery of loose ball in and out of bounds

2. Passing Plays:

a. Pass ruled complete/ incomplete/ intercepted in the fi eld of play and end zones

b. Touching of a forward pass by a player or an offi cialc. Illegal forward pass or illegal handing off beyond the line of scrimmaged. Illegal forward pass or illegal handing off after change of possessione. Forward or backward pass thrown from behind the line of scrimmagef. Quarterback (Passer) starts arm forward, ball comes loss and play is

ruled incomplete (if ball is quickly recovered)g. Quarterback (Passer) throws incomplete swing pass that is close to being

forward or backward, and pass is ruled forward (if ball is quickly recovered)3. Miscellaneous:

a. Runner ruled not down.b. Runner ruled down (when ball carrier is judged down by rule and the

ball is fumbled, play may be reviewed if recovery of ball occurs in the im- mediate action following fumble and is prior to any offi cial signaling ball is dead. Also reviewable when runner is ruled out of bounds near goal line.)

c. Forward progress with respect to fi rst downd. Touching of a kicke. Number of players on fi eldf. Clock adjustments (in conjunction with reviewed plays)g. Fourth-down/try fumble playsh. Field Goal Attempts (only when ball is ruled below or above the crossbar,

inside or outside the uprights when it is lower than the top of the uprights.)

i. The game clock expires at the end of a half. If at the end of the game, the time may be restored to the clock only if the score is tied or the team that would next snap the ball trails by eight points or fewer.

The ProcessEach SEC football stadium has a secured replay booth equipped with the HD

Instant Replay system provided by XOS Digital. Three individuals work in the booth for the duration of the game: 1. Replay Offi cial, 2. Communicator, 3. Technician. The Replay Offi cial and the Communicator are selected and assigned by the Conference.

A live HD video feed is sent directly to the replay booth from the TV truck. The Technician watches the feed on an input monitor while recording it into the XOS Digital Replay System. The Technician also marks the beginning of each play while the Communicator marks all incoming replays.

Each play and subsequent replay then appears on a touch screen in front of the Replay Technician. As the Technician and the Communicator mark the incoming video, each view will appear as a small picture on the computer touch screen. At any time, the Replay Technician can touch the thumbnail and immediately send that play or replay to the Replay Offi cial.

With the Communicator’s assistance, the Replay Offi cial can quickly jump be-tween replays while playing back the video. All replay video navigation is done via a jog shuttle remote controlled by the Replay Offi cial. All video is viewed on an HD monitor that sits in front of the Replay Offi cial. The touch screen is only used to select the replays and to log specifi c play data in the event a call is overturned.

While all plays are reviewed between the whistle and the beginning of the next play, the Replay Offi cial can stop play on the fi eld by using a pager system. Five on-fi eld offi cials wear pagers. If play is stopped the Referee announces on the stadium PA microphone that play has been stopped so the previous play can be reviewed. The Referee then proceeds to the sideline headset, which provides direct commu-nication to the Replay Offi cial in the booth. Once the play has been reviewed, the Replay Offi cial notifi es the Referee, who then announces the decision on the sta-dium PA system.

The conferences start at noon Eastern time. Lunch is served as part of the media conferences.
