THIS WEEK

2006-07 Lady Vol Tennis

No. 21 Lady Vol Tennis Heads West on I-40 for NCAA First and Second Rounds in Nashville The 21st-ranked University of Tennessee women’s tennis team (13-10) will make the short trip to Nashville, Tenn., this week for the initial two rounds of the 2007 NCAA Tournament. The Lady Vols will open play with a 10 a.m. contest, Friday, May 11, against No. 42 Tulsa (21-4) at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center on the campus of Vanderbilt University. The Big Orange is coming off a solid performance at the Southeastern Conference Tournament in Lexington, Ky., where it advanced to the semifi nals for the second consecutive season. The Orange and White got off to a quick start, sweeping its way past then-No. 72 Alabama, 4-0, on the fi rst day of play. UT then downed then-No. 23 South Carolina, 4-3, with senior Blakeley Griffi th providing the heroics. The Middleburg, Va., native, ranked 26th in the nation, claimed the match-clinching victory over No. 63 Gira Schofi eld on center court to allow her team to move on to the semifi nals where it fell to eventual tournament champion and then-fourth-ranked Georgia. Tennessee has come on strong at the end of the year, winning seven of its last 10 matches. The Lady Vols fi nished with a 6-5 record in SEC play, claiming a winning conference record for the eighth consecutive season, dating back to the 1999-2000 campaign. The winner of the matchup between UT and the Golden Hurricane will advance to face the victor of the Vanderbilt-Murray State contest. The second round match is scheduled to take place at noon on Saturday, May 12. In the NCAA Tournament last season, the Lady Vols were unable to advance out of the fi rst round, falling to Penn, 4-2, in Atlanta, Ga. If Tennessee is able to move on past this weekend’s action, it would earn a trip to the NCAA Team Championships to be hosted by the University of Georgia May 18-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

CLINCHING POINTS

Scouting No. 42 Tulsa The 42nd-ranked Golden Hurricane claimed the first ever conference championship in program history this season, fi nishing with an outstanding 21-4 record. Tulsa opened the season on a strong note, winning each of its fi rst nine matches, before hitting a bit of a rough stretch with all four of its losses coming in a span of 11 contests. TU was able to recover, however, by picking up victories in its fi nal fi ve matches, dropping just one point during its current winning streak. The squad also earned a number of Conference USA postseason awards, placing three singles and a doubles team on the All-C-USA team, as well as taking three of the six specialty awards. Tulsa head coach Dean Orford was named the C-USA Coach of the Year, while Santie Delport was named the Outstanding Singles Player of the league tournament and represents the squad on the C-USA fi rst team. The doubles team of Kindsay Grimes and Carla Zabaleta was named the Outstanding Doubles Team of the Championship, while also earning all-conference doubles team recognition. Grimes was also named second team All-C-USA, while Zabaleta was named to the All-C-USA third team. The matchup will be only the second time in history that Tulsa and Tennessee have squared off in women’s tennis, with the Lady Vols taking home a 7-0 sweep on Feb. 7, 2003, at the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis., in the only previous contest.

Scouting No. 16 Vanderbilt Host school, SEC foe, in-state rival and No. 16 Vanderbilt will take on Murray State Friday afternoon following the Tennessee-Tulsa contest. After opening the season slowly with a 2-5 record, the Commodores righted the ship and embarked on a 12-match winning streak. The ‘Dores fi nished third in the SEC with a 9-2 record, behind only No. 2 Georgia and fourth-ranked Florida. VU will be looking to make its 10th straight appearance in the NCAA Round of 16 this season. Vanderbilt has four players ranked in the Fila Collegiate Tennis singles poll with freshman Amanda Fish leading the pack at No. 19 with a record of 21-9.

She is quickly followed, however, by No. 36 Amanda Taylor and No. 51 Catherine Newman, as well as No. 105 Taka Bertrand. Fish and Taylor have also teamed up to earn mention in the doubles rankings, coming in at No. 8. Fish, Taylor and Newman were all named to the All-SEC fi rst team, while Bertrand earned league second-team honors. The potential Tennessee-Vanderbilt showdown would be the 45th such contest in the all-time series. UT currently holds a 28-16 advantage, but VU has won fi ve of the last six matchups, including a 4-3 triumph in Knoxville earlier this season. Scouting Murray State Murray State comes into the NCAA Tournament in the midst of a 13-match winning skein. The Racers have posted an overall record of 16-5, including an 8-1 mark in Ohio Valley Conference play. MSU picked up consecutive 4-1 victories over Eastern Illinois and Samford, respectively, in the OVC Tournament to earn the league’s automatic bid. The squad is led by twin sisters Anna and Rachael Lask, who have recorded respective singles records of 20-12 and 15-18 this year. The two have also combined to notch an impressive 26-8 mark from the top doubles position. Anna Lask earned all-conference distinction for the fourth consecutive season with fi rst-team honors, while sister Rachael picked up her third such award with a spot on the second team this year. Teammate Casady Pruitt joined her on the second team as well. Tennessee has won both previous contests with the Racers, claiming a 6-3 victory on May 6, 1981, in the TCWSF State Championship, and a 4-0 sweep in the fi rst round of the NCAA Tournament on May 10, 2003, in Knoxville.

LADY VOLS VS. NATIONALLY RANKED OPPONENTS

Lady Vols in the Polls One of the top programs in the nation, the University of Tennessee women’s team has earned a placing of 21st in the most recent Fila Collegiate Tennis rankings. UT has been rated as high as 16th this season (March 6), which marked its best showing since being ranked 10th in the initial poll of the 2004 season on Jan. 13, 2004.

Griffi th Ranked 26th in the Nation Senior Blakeley Griffi th is currently ranked as the No. 26 singles player in the country, according to the latest Fila Collegiate Tennis poll. The Middleburg, Va., native was rated as high as 12th in the nation following a tremendously successful fall season. In dual-match play, she has put together a solid 11-11 record as UT’s top singles player. This season, she is 24-15 overall, including a 10-13 mark against other ranked players.

Tennessee Tandem Ranks 28th The UT doubles pairing of freshmen Caitlin Whoriskey and Zsófi a Zubor made quite a leap the week of April 17, going from unranked to No. 27 in the nation. The Tennessee tandem moved to No. 31 on April 24 before claiming the 28th spot in the poll on April 30. Whoriskey and Zubor have been spectacular since joining forces on March 16, with victories over the No. 5 and No. 10 teams in the county. For the year, the duo is 7-3 overall, including a 5-2 mark from the top spot in the lineup. They have also come through in the clutch, clinching the doubles point in four different contests for UT.

Success on the Court and in the Classroom for Griffi th Once again, senior Blakeley Griffi th has proven to be the defi nition of a true student-athlete, claiming both First Team All-SEC honors in addition to the league’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. The Middleburg, Va., native has played at the No. 1 singles position for the Lady Vols all season while posting an astounding 3.96 GPA as an English major. Griffi th, a three-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, was previously named Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year as well as to the league’s second team in 2005. Last season, she picked up ESPN The Magazine Third-Team Academic All-America accolades.

Schutte Gives Back to the Community Junior Ghizela Schutte’s efforts in the Knoxville community have not gone unnoticed, as she has been named to the 2007 Southeastern Conference Women’s Tennis Community Service Team. The native of Cape Town, South Africa, has been extremely active in UT’s community outreach program and serves as the tennis team’s representative on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. While serving on SAAC, Schutte functioned as the organization’s secretary and was in charge of the social committee. As part of her responsibilities, she assisted with the planning and organization of UT’s spring event awards show, the Volscars, and its Holiday Dinner. Schutte has also volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club April Play Day as well as at the YWCA Spring Wing Fest. In addition, she has spent time as a receptionist at a free medical clinic and assisted with tennis clinics for local children.

TOP WINNING STREAKS

Trio of Lady Vols Selected to NCAA Championships Three members of the University of Tennessee women’s tennis team have been selected to participate in the NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships to be conducted May 23-28 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. Senior Blakeley Griffi th will represent the Lady Vols in the singles draw, while the duo of freshmen Caitlin Whoriskey and Zsófi a Zubor will play in the doubles portion of the competition. Griffi th becomes the 15th Lady Vol in program history to participate in the singles portion of the NCAA Championships. The last person to do so was Sabita Maharaj during the 2005 campaign. Before Whoriskey and Zubor’s selection, UT had not had a doubles team at the NCAA Championships since the 2003 season when Melissa Schaub and Vilmarie Castellvi were awarded a bid.

Lady Vols Against the NCAA Tournament Field In matches against teams that earned a spot in this year’s NCAA 64-team fi eld, UT has posted a respectable 6-10 record. The Lady Vols earned victories over Michigan, Indiana, Virginia, Auburn, Kentucky and South Carolina, while falling to Notre Dame, North Carolina, Duke, Wake Forest, Florida, LSU, South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Georgia (2x).

13th Consecutive NCAA Appearance for Lady Vols The 2007 season marks the 13th consecutive season and 17th overall in which Tennessee has taken part in the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Vols all-time NCAA record is 22-16, including a 10-4 tally in fi rst round matchups and an 8-4 mark in second round contests.

Strong Showing for Lady Vols at SEC Tournament For the second year in a row, the Lady Vols were able to battle their way to a semifi nal appearance at the Southeastern Conference Tournament. UT opened with a 4-0 sweep over then-No. 72 Alabama before squeezing out a hard-fought, 4-3 victory over then-No. 23 South Carolina. Senior Blakeley Griffi th came up huge in the triumph over the Gamecocks, picking up a come-from-behind, heart-pounding, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, win over No. 63 Gira Schofi eld at the top spot in the singles lineup to clinch the match and a berth into the semifi nals, where Tennessee fell to eventual tournament champion and then-No. 4 Georgia.

Making Their Way Up the Charts Seniors Blakeley Griffi th and Victoria Jones have both made steady progress up the all-time singles win list this season. Griffi th has made her way to 11th on the chart with a career record of 92-60 (.605), while Jones sits in a tie for 15th with a mark of 85-56 (.603). With two more victories, Griffi th would vault past Debbie Moringiello (93-50, .650) into the school’s top-10. The all-time UT career leader in singles wins is Vilmarie Castellvi who amassed an impressive 140-51 (.733) record from 1999-2003. Griffi th also recently gained sole possession of ninth on the all-time Tennessee doubles wins chart with a career doubles record of 82-41 (.667). The native of Middleburg, Va., posted a mark of 18-11 during her freshman campaign, went 20-14 as a sophomore and ended her junior year with 18 wins and 13 losses. She moved past Candy Reid and former teammate and doubles partner Melissa Schaub with a victory in the Lady Vols’ triumph over South Carolina in the SEC Tournament quarterfi nals. Sisters Paula and Peta Kelly (1978-82) hold the all-time Lady Vol record with an astounding 156 wins to just eight losses, for a .951 winning percentage.

Picking Up the Pace The Lady Vols have found their groove at just the right time, as they have earned victories in fi ve of their fi nal seven matches heading into NCAA Tournament play. Tennessee began its streak with an impressive 6-1 upset of then-No. 23 Kentucky on April 1, before sweeping its tour through the Magnolia State with 5-2 and 6-1 wins over Ole Miss and No. 75 Mississippi State, respectively. In each of those three triumphs, the Big Orange was dominating in doubles play, not dropping a single contest in any of the three matches. UT’s streak was snapped with a 6-1 loss to Georgia, but it returned to form at the SEC Tournament where it claimed victories in its fi rst two matches (4-0 vs. Alabama, 4-3 vs. South Carolina) before bowing out to eventual champion, Georgia.

Schutte Makes Her Return UT got a big boost to its lineup for the fi nal match of the regular season against No. 6 Georgia, as junior Ghizela Schutte made her fi rst

return the court after suffering a foot injury. The Cape Town, South Africa, native had last played against Wake Forest on Feb. 25. She has an overall singles record of 12-11, playing from the No. 2 position, while she has put together a 15-10 mark in doubles action. For her career, she has the third-most singles wins on the team with a record of 47-29 and the second-most doubles victories with a 39-37 mark.

Her Middle Name is Clutch When Tennessee has needed a clutch victory to pull out the win this season, sophomore Samantha Orlin has come through more than anyone else on the team. The Miami, Fla., product has won four matches this year that guaranteed her team the victory, having done so against Purdue, Virginia, Alabama and Ole Miss. In doubles play, it has been freshman Zsófia Zubor the Big Orange has turned to, as she has picked up a team-best seven doubles-point clinching wins this season. The first-ever native of Hungary to play on a Lady Vol athletics team, Zubor has put together a squad-leading 25-14 doubles mark to go along with her solid 19-10 singles record.

It’s All About the Doubles Point When Tennessee wins the doubles point, the two teams might as well call it a day, because it’s virtually guaranteed that the Lady Vols will be taking home the win that day. This season, UT is 12-1 when claiming the initial point of the match. When dropping the doubles point, the Big Orange is just 1-9, with its lone win coming against then-No. 45 Arkansas on March 4.

500 Wins and Counting With a perfect 7-0 sweep of No. 29 Indiana on Feb. 24, the Lady Vols notched the 500th victory in program history. The team now has an all-time record of 508-312 (.620) over 31 total seasons. UT entered the 2006-07 campaign having averaged 16.5 wins per year, topping out at 21 in both 1982-83 and 2001-02.

Reaching a Pair of Milestones For the 20th straight year, Mike Patrick is at the helm of the UT women’s tennis program. The 2007 season also marks the 10th consecutive for his co-head coach and wife, Sonia Hahn-Patrick, at Rocky Top. Before Hahn-Patrick joined him, Patrick had accumulated a record of 159-107 (.598). Since the 1997-98 season, however, the two have combined to post 181 wins to just 98 losses (.649), giving Patrick a total record of 340-205 (.624). Three Lady Vols in Southeast Region Rankings In the fall edition of the Southeast Region rankings, released Dec. 8, a trio of Lady Vols found their names among the list. Senior Blakeley Griffi th was named the top player in the rankings published by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, while Jones made the list at No. 22. Griffi th and freshman Zsófi a Zubor were honored as the No. 8 doubles team in the region, as well.

Vogel Named SEC Player of the Week Following the Lady Vols’ 4-3 triumph over No. 27 Virginia on Feb. 11, freshman Connor Vogel became the fi rst UT rookie to garner Southeastern Conference Player of the Week accolades since the 2000 season, when Crystal Cleveland accomplished the feat. Vogel was a key contributor, as the Big Orange took down the No. 27 Cavaliers. In doubles play, she teamed with junior Ghizela Schutte to post a dramatic 9-8 (7-3) win over the UVA tandem of Kristen McVitty and Jennifer Stevens on center court. The duo rallied from a 7-5 defi cit to earn the doubles-point clinching victory in a hard-fought battle that lasted over two hours.

Continuing a Tradition of Dominance Over the Big Ten With victories over No. 40 Purdue, Illinois, No. 23 Michigan and No. 29 Indiana this season, the Lady Vols have accumulated a 48-5 (.906) record over teams from the Big Ten in the last 10 years. During the Mike Patrick era, UT has put together an overall record of 64-11 (.853), after going 9-9 in the years before he came to Rocky Top. Since the inception of the program in the 1976-77 campaign, UT is 73-20 (.785) in matches against Big Ten foes. The Orange and White’s opponent on Feb. 24, Indiana, has accounted for over half of those losses, however, claiming 12 victories

against the Big Orange, including the fi rst seven contests between the two teams. Nearly Perfect in Home Openers With a 4-3 victory over No. 27 Virginia on Feb. 11, co-head coach Mike Patrick improved his record in home openers at Tennessee to 19-1, while fellow head coach Sonia Hahn-Patrick’s record in those matches moved to 9-1. The lone defeat for both was a 5-2 loss at the hands of North Carolina on Jan. 21, 2006.

Opening the Season on a Strong Note The Big Orange got the 2007 spring season off to a good start, winning fi ve of its fi rst seven dual matches. After dropping a hard-fought, 6-1, decision to then-No. 8 North Carolina, the Lady Vols bounced back with fi ve consecutive wins. The team’s fi rst two victories came over Big 10-foes No. 40 Purdue and Illinois. UT collected its third win of the season on Feb. 11, when it picked up a 4-3 win against No. 27 Virginia in the team’s home opener. On Feb. 17, the Orange and White made it four in a row, leveling No. 23 Michigan, 6-1. The squad then swept No. 29 Indiana, 7-0, before the winning streak came to an end with a 5-2 defeat at the hands of No. 20 Wake Forest.

UT Faces Top-Notch Schedule Once again, the Lady Vols put together of the most challenging spring schedules in the country, as half of their 20 opponents are ranked among the nation’s top 25 squads, including three of the nation’s top seven teams and six in the top 20. No. 2 Georgia is the Orange and White’s highest ranked foe, followed by No. 4 Florida and seventh-ranked Notre Dame. Rounding out the list of top-50 opponents are No. 11 North Carolina, No. 16 Vanderbilt, No. 19 Wake Forest, No. 22 Duke, 23rd-ranked Michigan, No. 24 Indiana, No. 25 South Carolina, 31st-ranked Auburn, No. 33 Kentucky, No. 36 LSU, 45th-rated Virginia and No. 48 Purdue. Overall, 16 of the 20 teams on the Orange and White’s slate are ranked. Always tough, the Southeastern Conference has been extremely strong again this year, with nine of its member institutions earning placements among the top 75. The lone SEC school ranked outside the top 50 is No. 57 Arkansas.

International Flavor The 2006-07 Lady Vols have a distinct international fl avor, as three members of the squad hail from outside the United States. Senior Vicky Jones is originally from Tyne & Wear in the United Kingdom, junior Ghizela Schutte calls Cape Town, South Africa, home and freshman Zsofi a Zubor comes to Rocky Top from Nyiregyhaza, Hungary. Recapping the Fall The Lady Vols kicked off the fall campaign by hosting the 2006 St. Mary’s Classic in Knoxville. The squad came away with three singles fl ight titles and another in doubles. Senior Blakeley Griffi th won the fl ight one title by beating No. 117 Austin Smith of North Carolina, 6-4, 6-3. In the second fl ight, fellow classmate Vicky Jones knocked off Georgia’s Kelley Hyndman, 6-1, 6-4. Lady Vol freshman Zsofi a Zubor won the sixth fl ight title over Kentucky’s Christine Johnston, 6-3, 6-0. Two weeks later at the Furman Fall Classic, Griffi th took down No. 39 Gira Schofi eld of South Carolina, 6-3, 6-2, to earn a third-place fi nish, while Jones and freshmen Connor Vogel and Caitlin Whoriskey picked up runner-up awards in their respective fl ights. Griffi th continued her hot play at the ITA Southeast Region Indoor Championships where she earned six consecutive singles victories, culminating in a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 win over No. 96 Anastasia Zhukova of Chattanooga to claim the tournament title. She dropped just two sets throughout the entire tournament and lost three or fewer points in all but fi ve frames. The title earned her a spot at the ITA National Indoor Championships in the fi rst week of November. In Columbus, Ohio, Griffi th opened with a dominating 6-1, 6-2 victory over No. 5 Zsuzsanna Fodor, before falling 6-1, 6-2 to No. 2 Kristi Miller of Georgia Tech. During the same weekend, junior Ghizela Schutte and sophomore Samantha Orlin closed out the fall schedule by splitting a pair of matches each at the SEC Coaches Fall Classic.
