Learning Objective: TLW take given information about TN state symbols and answer questions about what they learned, with 100% accuracy.
TN State Standard-1.34 Create a visual representation, such as a graphic organizer, of Tennessee symbols, including the state tree (Tulip Poplar), flower (Iris), motto (Agriculture and Commerce), animal (raccoon), nickname (Volunteer State), flag, and one song (Tennessee Waltz, Rocky Top). Write an opinion piece explaining why you think these are/are not good choices, including supporting detail.

Every state has unique traits. Today we will focus on Tennessee. Here are some things we will learn:
1. Our State’s Flower
2. Our State’s Animal
3. Our State’s Nickname
Flower & Animal
Flower: The Iris
In 1973, TN lawmakers named the Iris as its state flower after a wave of gardening that began in 1930.
Animal: The Raccoon
In the 1800s raccoons almost became extinct, but after laws were implemented, they have survived and multiplied throughout the state.
Nickname
“The Volunteer State”
TN gained this nickname due to the waves of volunteers in the War of 1812. Thousands of TN men and women helped the war effort in The Battle of New Orleans.
