Brandon Zenner Editor in Chief @brandonzenner Many kids grow up with a particular sport or hobby that becomes synonymous with them as a person. As they get older, they start to make dreams – get a college scholarship, play professional or become a coach. However, there is no bigger dream than throwing on the colors of your home country. For Alvaro Riveros, his greatest dream became a reality before the age of 20. In June 2014, Riveros was called up to the represent his home country of Costa Rica in the Davis Cup, the premier international team tournament in tennis. Four years before that, as a 16yearold, Riveros was unsure if he wanted to continue playing tennis. “My dad wanted me to play tennis – I was more into playing soccer when I was young,” Riveros said. “It (tennis) was more like a hobby. It was nothing very competitive until I got older and I had realized that I was getting kinda good. I didn’t practice much but once or twice a week. “Then I started traveling, playing international tournaments, national tournaments and I started doing pretty good. At some point I had to choose whether I wanted to play soccer or tennis. I was much better at tennis than I am soccer.” Riveros was born in Bogotá, Colombia, but moved to Heredia, Costa Rica, where he has lived ever since. Before the age of 16, Riveros participated in the junior Davis Cup where he realized the importance of representing his country and playing into the team aspect. Each Davis Cup match consists of two singles matches and one doubles match, making the tournament unique in the fact that teams, not individuals, advance. Throughout his career, Riveros competed in national tournaments and reached a number of finals and semifinals, even winning a few tournaments, boosting him to No. 2 nationally and putting him on the national team’s radar. However, Riveros was unable to begin competing until he gained citizenship with Costa Rica. “As soon as I started my process to get my passport and citizenship, they just called me immediately and said ‘We want you there, we want you to be part of the process,’” Riveros said. “There are a lot of guys who are close to my level so it was not a decision. They finally called me two months before saying I was able to play, so I just went there and did the best I could.” As many international students do, Riveros began weighing the option of coming to America to get an education and play tough opponents in tennis. Though he finally chose to play at Northwest, he continued his pursuit to represent his nation. “The Davis Cup has always been a dream for me. It’s the most important tournament in the world of tennis, and especially since you can represent your own country,” Riveros said. “It’s such an honor to play in it. I think I never thought about it until last year. After I got my citizenship, the federation call me and said they wanted to play Davis Cup. “ ... Davis Cup compared to soccer is the World Cup. For football, it’s just like the Super Bowl,” Riveros explained. “It doesn’t get bigger than this.”
