John Henry Newman was born on February 21st 1801 in London. He

was the eldest of six and was the son of John and Jemima Newman. His

father was a banker in the city and so John Henry Newman had a mid-

dle class upbringing on Southampton Street in Bloomsbury. His family

were practising members of the Church of England and therefore New-

man was exposed to the Bible at an early age, becoming an avid reader

of it. At the age of seven, Newman went to study at Great Ealing

School. When he was only fifteen, he would have a religious experi-

ence so strong that it would change his life forever. Writing about it

later in life, he describes what happened as follows.

‘When I was fifteen a great change of thought took place in me. I fell under the influences of a definite Creed …

I believed that the inward conversion of which I was conscious … would last into the next life, and that I was

elected to eternal glory. … I believe that it had some influence on my opinions … in isolating me from the ob-

jects which surrounded me, in confirming me in my mistrust of the reality of material phenomena, and making

me rest in the thought of two and two only absolute and luminously self-evident beings, myself and my crea-

tor.’ Apologia

He would go on to refer to this as his first conversion. Around the time of this conversion experience (1816),

Newman came into contact with Evangelicalism which was gaining momentum with the teaching of figures

such as John Wesley, bringing about what is now referred to as the Wesleyan revival, even though Wesley had

been rejected by the established Church. In his final year of school, Newman converted to Evangelicalism. (excerpts from newmancanonisation.com/newmans-life)

✠ 11:15 SOLEMN MASS ✠ TENTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY ✠ 25 AUGUST AD 2019 ✠

Collect V. Peace be with you. R. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray. Let thy merciful ears, O Lord, be open to the prayers of thy humble servants: and that they may obtain their petitions, make them to ask such things as shall please thee; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Ho-ly Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

V. In the Name of the + Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. R. Amen.

Collect for Purity, Summary of the Law Missal, page 1 Kyrie (Merbecke) Hymn 702 Gloria (Old Scottish Chant) Hymn 739

The Lesson: Isaiah 66:18-21 Thus says the Lord: “I know their works and their thoughts, and I am coming to gather all nations and tongues; and they shall come and shall see my glory, and I will set a sign among them. And from them I will send survivors to the nations, to Tarshish, Put, and Lud, who draw the bow, to Tubal and Javan, to the islands afar off, that have not heard my fame or seen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the nations. And they shall bring all your brethren from all the nations as an offering to the Lord, upon hors-es, and in chariots, and in litters, and upon mules, and upon dromedaries, to my holy mountain Jerusalem, says the Lord, just as the sons of Israel bring their cereal offering in a clean vessel to the house of the Lord. And some of them also I will take for priests and Levites, says the Lord.” V. The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

The Epistle: Hebrews 12:5-7, 11-13 Brethren, have you forgotten the exhortation which addresses you as sons? -- “My son, do not regard lightly the discipline of the Lord, nor lose courage when you are punished by him. For the Lord disci-plines him whom he loves, and chastises every son whom he receives.” It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons; for what son is there whom his father does not discipline? For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant; later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Therefore lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be put out of joint but rather be healed. V. The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

The Holy Gospel: St. Luke 13:22-30 V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit.

V. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke. R. Glory be to thee, O Lord. At that time, Jesus went on his way through towns and villages, teaching, and journeying toward Jerusalem. And some one said to him, “Lord, will those who are saved be few?” And he said to them, “Strive to enter by the narrow door; for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. When once the householder has risen up and shut the door, you will begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us.’ He will answer you, ‘I do not know where you come from.’ Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ But he will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you come from; depart from me, all you workers of iniquity!’ There you will weep and gnash your teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God and you your-selves thrust out. And men will come from east and west, and from north and south, and sit at table in the kingdom of God. And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.” V. The Gospel of the Lord. R. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The Psalm: Psalm 117 [Laudate Dominum] Chant, William Russell (1777-1813)

O praise the Lord, | all ye | nations:

praise | him, | all ye | peoples.

For his merciful kindness is ever more and | more to- | ward us: and the truth of the Lord endureth for| ev-er. | Praise the | Lord.

Offertory Anthem: Hymn-Anthem on “O Quanta Qualia” Healy Willan (1880-1968) Oh, what their joy and their glory must be,

Those endless Sabbaths the blessèd ones see! Crown for the valiant, to weary ones rest;

God shall be all, and in all ever blest.

Truly Jerusalem name we that shore, Vision of peace, that brings joy evermore; Wish and fulfillment can severed be ne’er,

Nor the thing prayed for come short of the prayer.

There, where no troubles distraction can bring, We the sweet anthems of Sion shall sing;

While for thy grace, Lord, their voices of praise Thy blessèd people eternally raise.

Low before Him with our praises we fall, Of Whom, and in Whom, and through Whom are all;

Of Whom, the Father; and in Whom, the Son; Through Whom, the Spirit, with Them ever One.

Communion Anthem: Praise the Lord, ye servants John Blow (1649-1708) Praise the Lord, ye servants: O praise the Name of the Lord.

Blessed be the Name of the Lord: from this time forth for evermore.

Offertory Antiphon Ad te, Domine, levavi Psalm 25:1, 2 Unto thee O Lord, lift I up my soul; O my God, in thee have I trusted, let me not be confounded:

neither let mine enemies triumph over me; for all they that hope in thee shall not be ashamed.
