Fr. Kitzhaber’s Comments
There was an unexpected news article from NBC on my
news feed today. The Supreme Court ruled that a baker did not have to bake a wedding cake for two men joining in what
they call 'marriage.' In the 7-2 decision, the court said legal
proceedings in Colorado had shown a hostility to the baker's
religious views. Monday's ruling was written by Justice An-
thony Kennedy, who also wrote the Supreme Court's same-
sex marriage decision. So it is a victory for religious freedom, despite the outcry by
some that it is unfair discrimination. Be prepared, though.
Attacks on religious freedom are real. It won't stop here.
Francis Cardinal George, the previous Cardinal of Chicago,
said that if this moral decline continues, persecutions will
increase. “I expect to die in bed, my successor will die in prison and his successor will die a martyr in the public square.
His successor will pick up the shards of a ruined society and
slowly help rebuild civilization, as the church has done so
often in human history” - Cardinal George.

Pro Life News During the incredibly intense and emotional battle to save little Alfie Evans, in the background for many people were thoughts of similar case of anoth-er seriously ill baby boy whose parents unsuccess-fully fought an unresponsive hospital and judiciary in 2017. That was Charlie Gard, the son of Connie Yates and Chris Gard, who have established a foundation in his memory to give other sick children a “brighter future.” Charlie died in Ju-ly, one month short of his first birthday. Alfie’s very serious degenerative brain disease was never defin-itively diagnosed. But the hospital in which he lived since Decem-ber 2016 fought with all its resources to foil an attempt by his parents, Tom Evans and Kate James, to take him to Italy for fur-ther diagnosis and possible treatment. Nothing else could be done, the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital proclaimed. He died five days after his ventilator was disconnected. Alfie was just shy of his second birthday. In Charlie’s case, his parents raised more than £1.3 million to pay for therapy in America. But Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children in London was even more adamant than Alder Hey, in-sisting that experimental therapy could not help. It would be “futile.” As with Alfie Evans, they won the right to withdraw life-support treatment. Through their foundation, which they launched today, Connie Yates and Chris Gard want to raise awareness of Charlie’s dis-ease— mitochondrial depletion syndrome, a very rare genetic condition which causes progressive muscle weakness and brain damage. http://www.lifenews.com by: Dave Andrusko, Jun 4, 2018, London
