It even happened to Jesus. We expect the authorities of the day to have it in for Him, but when His own blood relatives come to hush Him up and talk "sense" to Him, it seems a bit over the top. Perhaps as the eldest son they didn't think he should be gallivanting around Galilee playing the prophet, but rather looking after matters closer to home. But Jesus can see past their own narrow interests, and also throws the accusations of the authorities back in their faces. He associates Himself with His followers as family, and in much the same way we can look to our parish an extended family. • This year’s Catholic Mission Church Appeal highlights the important work of Catholic Mission in Myanmar; through programs aimed to improve education for children, specifically through teacher training and the implementation of alternative, child-centred education around the country.

The theme of the appeal is ‘Healing a nation through education’. The theme reflects our mission as Christians to provide the tools and support to help those in need, and in doing so, announcing peace and bringing good news.

Seeing a need in his country for stronger education, Cardinal Charles Maung Bo S.D.B.,

Myanmar’s first Cardinal, initiated the teacher training programs and, with the support of Sister

Grace Chia IJs and lay missionary Jacinta Cardoza, established a key training institute, Pyinya

Sanyae Institute of Education (PSIE), in Yangon ten years ago. Today, the Cardinal remains a

strong advocate for the education reforms currently underway in Myanmar through programs

such as those run by PSIE and the Episcopal Commission for Education (ECE), and others that

help heal and build a prosperous Myanmar

    through education.

The PSIE program trains aspiring teachers, equipping them with the skills and knowledge so they can bring modern, child-centred education methodologies to areas in need. Despite a high attendance rate for primary-aged children (90%), the secondary school attendance rate drops sharply to 58%*. This equates to fewer opportunities for young adolescents later in life. With your support in training skilled teachers, schools across Myanmar can be better equipped to provide quality education, affecting the lives of thousands of students.

St John’s School in Hakha, in the

mountainous north of Myanmar, is one school

now staffed by three teachers who have

graduated from the PSIE program. These

teachers, and two others from ECE, care for

over 50 students ranging from Preschool to

Year 1. Feedback from parents of the children

attending St John’s is extremely positive; they

are confident that their children are receiving

quality education and care, and can see how

their children are enjoying the interactive

    learning environment. * https://data.unicef.org/country/mmr/

    THIS WEEK’S GOSPEL – Mark 3: 20-35

First Anniversary occurring at this time:

Jesus went home with his disciples, and such a crowd collected that they could not even have a meal. When his relatives heard of this, they set out to take charge of him, convinced he was out of his mind.

The scribes who had come down from Jerusalem were saying, ‘Beelzebul is in him,’ and, ‘It is through the prince of devils that he casts devils out.’ So he called them to him and spoke to them in parables, ‘How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot last. And if a household is divided against itself, that household can never stand. Now if Satan has rebelled against himself and is divided, he cannot stand either - it is the end of him. But no one can make his way into a strong man’s house and burgle his property unless he has tied up the strong man first. Only then can he burgle his house.

‘I tell you solemnly, all men’s sins will be forgiven, and all their blasphemies; but let anyone blaspheme against the Holy Spirit and he will never have forgiveness: he is guilty of an eternal sin.’ This was because they were saying, ‘An unclean spirit is in him.’

His mother and brothers now arrived and, standing outside, sent in a message asking for him. A crowd was sitting round him at the time the message was passed to him, ‘Your mother and brothers and sisters are outside asking for you.’ He replied, ‘Who are my mother and my brothers?’ And looking round at those sitting in a circle about him, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers. Anyone who does the will of God, that person is my brother and sister and mother.’
