Standard or light version -Two green roof packages that have everything you need

Garages, carports and all other small areas can be extensi-vely planted, reliably and cheaply with the Bauder green roof packages.

Two types of packages are available:

Bauder green roof package-the 100 kg standard package

Bauder green roof package light- the 70 kg light version

Root-resistant covering (not included in the scope of supply)

Both package solutions are suitable for roof angles up to 10. The existing roof covering must be root-resistant. Use the checklist to make sure that your roof satisfies all the planting conditions. The step-by-step laying instructions show how easily planting can be done with Bauder green roof packages.

    Green roofs have these advantages

They store rainwater and slow down the drainage process. They offer reduced hard surface drainage charges in local authority areas with split drainage charges. They improve heat and noise insulation. They protect the roof covering against extremes of

temperature, UV radiation and mechanical damage and thereby extend their life cycle.

They improve the microclimate through dust capture, temperature equalisation, atmospheric humidity control.

They create replacement habitats for plants and animals. They are particularly attractive.

Planting a roof is simplicity in itself:

Roll out the SDF mat on to the root-resistant covering

cut to size and lay over the entire surface, butting the joins. Seal the overlap of the longitudinal seams.

In the area of roof outlets, cut out the SDF mat. If it is not possible to install an inspection chamber, edge the drain with coarse gravel see checklist.

Immediately afterwards, apply two bags of substrate per square metre. Do not leave any part of the SDF mat uncovered.

Rake to an even compost depth of approximately 8 cm.

Plant the low-growing perennials, app-lying slight pressure. Cover the plant root balls lightly with substrate. Then water and apply the fertiliser.

Bauder green roof packagesThe 100 kg standard package

The Bauder standard green roof package is the right choice for all roofs where weight is not a problem. The 80 mm-thick sub-strate layer offers a generous root zone for a wide range of vegetation and stores sufficient water to maintain healthy plant growth.

Water that cannot be stored, known as surplus water, is drained by the 20 mm-thick SDF mat quickly and reliably. The green roof construction weighs approximately 100 kg/m2 when fully saturated with water.

green roof packagesThe 70 kg light version

Bauder light green roof package has been specially develo-ped for light roof constructions. The water storage panel can retain 10 l/m2. This additional water reservoir allows a reduc-tion in the substrate thickness to 50 mm. The weight of the total construction when saturated with water only amounts to

approximately 70 kg/m2. Because of the smaller root zone, the variety of species is limited compared with the standard package. We therefore always recommend the standard package for roofs with adequate load-bearing capacity.

20 water storage panels 25 m2 filter fabric

Laying your light green roof package is simplicity in itself:

Lay down the water storage panel. With a low roof edge, you can use gravel to adjust the height. Otherwise, lay the water storage panel as far as the edge.

The water storage panel can be cut with a carpet knife. Start the second row with the cut edge of the first row.

Lay the filter fleece with an overlap of at least 10 cm.

Cut out the water storage panel and the filter fleece in the area of the roof drains. Install inspection chamber or apply gravel see instructions in the checklist.

Immediately afterwards, apply one sack of substrate per square metre. Make sure that you have a thickness of exactly 5 cm. Do not leave any part of the water storage panel or filter fleece uncovered.

Checklist Use this checklist to see whether your roof satisfies all the planting requirements.

StaticsIs the roof construction designed to withstand the additional weight? When saturated with water, the standard package, including vegetation, weighs approx. 100 kg/m2 and the light version, 70 kg/m2.

Root penetration protectionThe FLL guidelines specify that the existing covering must not allow root penetration; either this or separate root pro-tection will need to be provided. Bauder green roof packages do not contain root protection. If the covering is PVC, a separating layer (e.g. PE film) must be laid under the water storage panel.

Roof angleThe Bauder green roof package is suitable for all small surfaces up to a roof angle of 10.

Roof edgeThe construction height of the green roof packages is 10 cm. The roof edge must be at least as high. If the work is done in accordance with the flat roof guidelines, the requirements regarding minimum kerb and upstand heights must be taken into account.

Roof drainageAfter planting, the outlets must remain freely accessible for inspection and maintenance. One simple solution is to edge the drain with coarse gravel. However, it is best to use the Bauder inspection chamber that is available as an accessory (but which can only be installed if the drain is at least 20 cm from the edge of the roof).

Site conditionsSunny sites are the most suitable for the green roof package. However, a special plant range is available for shady sites. When ordering plants, please remember to include details of the site on the order coupon.

Water supplyExtensive planting under roof projections, or where adjacent facades keep the rain away, must be watered regularly. Such areas are, therefore, gravelled rather than planted.

Further important information Order couponThe order coupon for the low-growing perennials and fertiliser starter pack is contained in the package on the pallet. Simply complete it and post it or fax it back to us. Delivery will be made on the next possible despatch day. Despatch days are Monday to Wednesday. The plants will be delivered by parcel service within 48 hours. We do not despatch at the weekend.

Planting timeSpring and autumn are ideal and offer the best growth conditions for low-growing perennials. If the roof is planted in the summer and if the weather is dry, thorough watering is required two to three times a week while the plants are establishing themselves (3 4 weeks). We do not recom-mend planting in winter even in a mild climate. Also, with normal weather conditions, the perennials are not available before the end of March.

Site preparationBefore laying, sweep the substrate and check that the root-resistant covering is leak-tight (visual check, or leave water standing for a while).

Planting tipPlanting works best with groups of the same species (grasses/herbs: 3 5 plants; sedums: 8-15 plants). Plant 25 30 cm apart with 12 plants per square metre. After planting, water thoroughly and spread the fertiliser evenly.

CareExtensive planting requires little maintenance but does require some. Please follow the care instructions on the back page.

    Care instructions

During the first two growing seasons, the green roof must be maintained regularly. After two growing seasons, the plants have usually spread, so twice-yearly maintenance is enough.

WateringLow-growing perennials only need to be watered 2 to 3 times a week immediately after planting if there is persistent drought. Once the roots have established themselves, extensive planting will withstand long periods without rain. However, if there is a dry period, they can be watered once a week to speed up plant development. More frequent watering spoils the plants and is therefore not recommended, because the vegetation will then always rely on an adequate water supply.

Weeds and seedlingsInvasive weeds and tree seedlings must be removed from the roof completely with root.

NutrientsBauders fertiliser starter pack applied immediately after planting, is sufficient for the first year. Following this, apply more fertiliser once a year if there is an obvious lack of nutrient. The vegetation will suffer without adequate nutrients. Only use plastic-coated slow-release fertiliser. The best time for fertilisation is Spring. Apply approximately 30 g/m2.

Bare patchesIf some of the low-growing perennials do not thrive, the roof will have bare patches. Simply cut off shoots from well-developed sedum plants and plant them in the gaps, giving them a light covering of substrate. Then water.

TechnologyMaintenance also includes checking the roof drainage and the roof covering. Any vegetation or dirt preventing them from functioning effectively, must be removed.
