As the Mayor of the sixth district of Budapest, I would

like to sincerely welcome you. I would like to draw your

attention to the current issue of the series of publications

called City Guide introducing Terzvros.The main sights of Terzvros can be ranked

between the emblematic sights of the Capitol and

Hungary as a whole, too. In our district one can find

the Hungarian State Opera House, the Music Academy,

the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, the Hungarian

Academy of Fine Arts with the Strawberry Garden,

including the renovated baroque calvary.

The Andrssy road, constituting the axis of thedistrict is a part of the World Heritage, and under it the

Millennium Underground Railway can be found which

was built as the very first one on the continent. In the

sixth district, the biggest number of Hungarian theatres

- no wonder that the quarter is called also the Broadway

of Budapest - are operated, together with several nation-

al museums. Besides other great personalities, Ferenc

Liszt and Zoltn Kodly, two world-famous composers

had been living and working here, and their memory

is preserved by an exhibition place and public grounds.

The most popular from the former coffee houses, the so

called Japanese had been the haunt of the Hungarian

society of writers, and the tradition is maintained by its

successor, the Shop of Writers. Besides cultural institu-

tions, world-class shops, diplomatic representative offices

and restaurants are hosted by the historical mansions.

The neighbourhood of Liszt Ferenc square -Nagymez street has recently become a place of worship

- in the evenings young people arriving from all parts of

the city or even the whole continent are meeting each

other in the local pubs, coffee houses, Mediterranean

terraces and alternative clubs.

Msok, a vrosrsz templomnak vdszentjrl, Szent Terzrl

eredeztetik ezt. Annyi bizonyos, hogy 1777-ben a pesti magisztr-

tus a kirlynrl Terzvrosnak nevezte el Fels-klvrost, utalva

Mria Terzia nvad szentjre, Avilai Szent Terzre.

Mg ugyanazon v szeptember 30-n ltrehoztk a pl-

bnit, melynek kpolnjt egy fa pletbl alaktottk ki.

A kezdetben mg csak majorokbl ll terlet a XVII.szzadban rohamos fejldsnek indult.

Terzvros llekszma 1806-ban mr csaknem elrte a

Belvrost, s messze felette llt Jzsefvros, de mg inkbb

Ferenc- s Liptvros lakossgnak. Az 1838-as szokatlanul

hideg tl azonban visszavetette a virgzst. A Duna jegnek ol-

vadsa kvetkeztben hatalmas rhullm sprt vgig Budn

A pusztulst kveten kezdett vette a msodik jjpts. En-

Az 1896-os vilgkilltsra kszlds lzban plt meg az elsfldalatti vast, elnyerte mai formjt az Andrssy t, amely

2002-ben a vilgrksg rszv vlt. Kiplt a Nyugati plyaud-

var. Ez mr egy j Terzvros volt.

Az I. vilghbor s az azt kvet esemnyek visszavetettk a

fvros fejldst, s az 1920-as vek vgn kialakul gazdasgi

vlsg sem kedvezett a kibontakozsnak.

A II. vilghbort kveten kialakult az gynevezett Nagy-

Budapest, amely belvrosra, klvrosra, laktelepekre, az elkel

hegyoldalra s agglomercira osztotta a fvrost.

Ezzel egytt Terzvros ma mr Budapest szvhez, a city-

vezethez tartozik. A 2,38 km2kiterjeds vrosrszen thalad

kzlekedsi tvonalakon mint f tereken valsul meg

jelents mrtkben a fvros kapcsolata orszg-vilggal.

Napjainkban a 44.000 fs lakossggal rendelkez Terz-

vros jelents kereskedelmi, idegenforgalmi s diplomciai

kzpontja Budapestnek. A kerlet szaki sarkban a Nyugati

In 1806, the population size of Terzvros almost reached that

of the Downtown, and exceeded a lot the population size of J-zsefvros and the city parts Ferenc- and Liptvros.

However, the unusually cold winter of 1838 hindered the pros-

perity. Due to the melting of the Danube Rivers ice, massive floods

swept through Buda and Pest. Except for a few small patches, most

of the houses had collapsed.

After the destruction the second reconstruction has started.

During this the Kirly street has developed into a main street from

a field path, with stately buildings and bustling commerce. The

most dynamic part of the citys development is related to 1872.

The first underground railway line was built in the fever of

preparation for the world expo of 1896, when Andrssy road ob-

tained its todays form, becoming one of the World Heritage Sites

in 2002. The Western Railway Station was built. This was already

a new Terzvros.

World War I. and the subsequent events hindered a lot the de-

velopment of Budapest, and the economic recession emerging at

the end of 1920s did not favoured the prosperity either.After the Second World War, the so called Big Budapest was

created, which separated the capital city into a downtown, a sub-

urb, housing estates, the upscale hillside and agglomeration.

Together with this, nowadays Terzvros belongs to the heart

of Budapest, to the city zone. The connection of the Capitol with

the neighbouring regions is realized to a great extent on the traffic

routes - as the main arteries - crossing this city part of 2.38 km2

.Nowadays Terzvros, with its population of 44,000 persons is

a significant commercial, touristic and diplomatic centre of Bu-

dapest.

In the northern corner of the district visitors and foreigners can

find the Western Railway Station and the bustling atmosphere of

the square emerged in front of it; however, not too far from here

the Broadway of Budapest is located, with its theatres and clubs.

Just a few more steps and we can find ourselves again at the latest

Hungarian World Heritage, the Andrssy road, among the great

Neo-Renaissance mansions, on the promenade under the shadow

of sycamore trees, in the proximity of elegant mansion-palaces

with forecourts. A new corner of the street and we are at the Kirly

street about which several old songs about Budapest were written;

it is the former main street of merchants operating in Budapest.

The growing commercial and banking network, the modern

shopping centres, travel agencies, catering units, theatres and

other education and entertainment possibilities make Terzvrosone of the most colourful district of the Capitol.

Andrssy road; part of

the World Heritage Sites


Despite its threefold separation, the Andrssy road - recorded

as a part of the World Heritage since 2002 - shows an ex-

ceptional architectural unit, the reason for which is that

little more than ten years were needed to its full development. The

2.3-kilometer-long trail of Andrssy road was set in 1872 and in

1884, there was only one empty plot on it, but a year later there

was a palace also on that one. The second period of the renewal ofPest-Buda, aiming for a metropolitan rank began here.

From the aspect of culture and history, the most interesting

sights of the Hungarian capital city can be found here. It rightly

belongs to the circle of World Heritage. One of the most valuable

buildings of the Andrssy road is the palace of the Hungarian

State Opera House, but one can find here the old Music Acad-

emy and the buildings of the old Arts Gallery and the Hungarian

Academy of Fine Arts, too.

The opposite building of the same beauty, the Ballet Institute

had been the citadel of ballet until recently. At this starting phase

of the avenue beautiful shops entice buyers. From among the exclu-

sive goods, it is a special experience to observe the wonderful Czech

crystal lamps, porcelain and the French jewellery, but world-classwatches, shoes and clothes are available here, as well.

Hungarian State Opera House

The Opera House is one of the most significant monu-

ments of Budapest from the 19th century. The Neo-Re-

naissance palace spiced with baroque elements was born

between 1875 and 1884 based on the plans of MiklsYbl, utilizing all inventions of architecture of the era.

On the Neo-Renaissance building the style elements of

Baroque and Renaissance, architecture and plastics, or-

naments, wooden and metalworks are combined in a

harmonic unity, thanks to the thorough attention of Ybl.

The representative function of the building is empha-

sized by rich decoration: the lobby and stairway made of

marble, walls covered with marble sheets, the inlaid floorof salons, the velvety tapestry, the gold and red glamour

of the auditorium, and artistic wall paintings and frescos

decorating the ceilings and sidewalls.

The majority of wall paintings of the Opera House

have been prepared by three masters of the Hunga-

rian historicism, Kroly Lotz, Bertalan Szkely and

Mr Than.

The memory collection of the Opera House was cre-

ated in 1930. In the material complied from the docu-

ments of the house and the donations of the wide public,

the most valuable is the collection of 125 elements depos-

ited by Lajos Ernst.

University of Fine Arts

The predecessor of the Hungarian Academy of Fine

Arts, the Royal Hungarian National School of Deco-

rative Arts and Drawing Teacher Training School was

established in 1871. Its building was built by the ar-

chitect called Alajos Rauscher, educated in Mnchen

and teacher of the School of Decorative Arts, to the

corner plot of the Andrssy road bordering with Iza-

bella street. The internal decoration of the building has

been created based on his plans, too. In the sgraffito of

the facade designed by him, the portraits of medallions(Bramante, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, etc.)

are the works of Bertalan Szkely. The education was

started in the institution in 1876, and ten years later the

building was added a new wing.

The Art Gallery, handed over in 1877 was built on

the adjacent plot by the support of public donations.

The facade of the Neo-Renaissance-style avenue pal-ace and the internal ornaments of the building were

designed by Adolf Lng. The stairway crowned by an

oval dome and the allegorical wall paintings of the

corridor of the first floor are the artworks of painting

teacher of the master school, Kroly Lotz.

The history of School of Decorative Arts - which had

been operated from 1897 as the School of Decorative

Arts and from 1808 as the National Hungarian RoyalCollege of Fine Arts - and the neighbouring Art Gallery

is common: the teachers of the school had been simulta-

neously the exhibiting artists of the Art Gallery, and in

1897 their first exhibition in Budapest was orga-

nized here, too.

In connection with the Millennium

celebrations, in 1896 an exhibition

palace was built in the City Park,

which received the name Art Gal-

lery. The building on Andrssy

road was then renamed as the

Old Art Gallery. In 1921 the

two neighbouring buildings

were joined together and

since that time the build-

ing of the Old Art Gallery

is a part of the University of

Fine Arts.

Ferenc Liszt MemorialMuseum andResearch Centre

The Museum - operated since 1986 - collects alldata and objects related to Ferenc Liszt, and is

the centre of the Liszt research. The exhibition

introduces the expanded and renewed material

of Liszt memorial rooms existing from 1925. The

last flat of Ferenc Liszt in Budapest was located

on the first floor of the Old Music Academy, where

the master had been living from 1881 to 1886.

The double anniversary of the year of 1986,the 100thanniversary of death of the great mu-

sician and the 175th anniversary of his birth

brought a special event of our musical life: the

building standing on the corner of Andrssy road

and Vrsmarty street opened its gates again for

students of the Music Academy, its teachers, re-

searchers, and the music-loving public.

Church of St. Theresa

For the faithful people living in Terzvros, a

parsonage was established by Archbishop Jo-

seph Batthyny on the 30thof September, 1777.

For the purpose of establishing a chapel, one

of the wooden buildings of the croft belonging

to Ferencn Scopek was handed over, to which

even a flat was built for the parson at his ownexpense. The construction of the church was

started in 1801 based on the plans of Fidl

Kasselik, in honor of the Holy Spirit. By 1809

the building had become usable. The interior

was designed by Mihly Pollack between 1824-

31. The steeple is the work of Mikls Ybl (from

1871). Upon the order of Sndor Rudnay Arch-

bishop, in 1822 the title of a monument church(1215 m2) was changed to St. Teresa of Avila.

Old Music AcademyThe art nouveau building was built between

1904-1907. The originality of the strong facade is

eye-catching and behind it the building is large,

too: 2,600 square meters.The spaciousness of external form and wide

windows of the palace built based on the plans

of Klmn Giergl and Flris Korb suggest the

significance of the building. Entering the build-

ing we arrive into the lobby with colourful and

rich ornaments, the muted lighting of which re-

sembles the atmosphere of sanctuaries.

From among the concert halls, the Great Hallis a great work of the early domestic architecture

of reinforced concrete.

In its lobby, the Hungarian-themed frescoes of

Istvn Zichy can be seen.

Budapest Operettaand Musical TheatreThe art nouveau building of Orpheum was

prepared in 1894 based on the plans of the

famous Viennese architects, Fellner and Hel-

mer. Later on it has been rebuilt, but the

building is still reminiscent of the age of the

birth of operettas.

Until the beginning of World War I, a mu-

sic hall had been operating in the building.

When the war broke out, the fun palaceclosed down, the music halls golden age

came to an end, and by this also the nostal-

gic era was finished which was later called as

the happy times of peace.

The capital city decided in 1922 to provide op-

eretta with a separate place. In the art nouveau

home of Orpheum, by the opening of the Buda-

pest Operetta and Musical Theatre the era of Sil-ver Operetta was started.

The House of TerrorThe House of Terror Museum was estab-

lished in the former headquarters of the

Arrow Cross Party and the Hungarian

State Police - State Protection Depart-

ment, for the purpose of introducing two

bloody eras of the Hungarian history, the

Arrow Cross regime and the communist

dictatorship of the 1950s.The House of Terror Museum, which is

unique of its kind, aims to remember all

those detained, tortured and murdered

in the building. The exhibition occupies

three storeys of the building, the notori-

ous cellars and stairway, furthermore,

the patio, as well.

The black decorative cornice of thebuilding, the blade walls and the gran-

ite pavement highlight the museum

from among other buildings on the

Andrssy road.

WesternRailway StationThe first building of the Western Railway

Station was the final stop of the first Hun-

garian railway line in Pest. The head station

type building was designed by the Viennese

architect Paul Sprenger and built by Zitter-

barth, an architect from Pest. It was handedover to traffic on 15thof July, 1846.

In 1874 the hall building of the railway

station was demolished and based on the

plans of August W. De Serres, the Viennese

central building designer of the Austro-Hun-

garian State Railways a new railway station

was built. The managing engineer of the

construction was Lszl Viktor Gyeng. The

construction of the new head station was

finished in 1877. The contractors of the con-

struction projects were limited-liability com-

panies: the French companies Schneider,

Fives-Lille and Eiffel; and the Hungarian

iron works of Vitkovic. The handover cere-

mony was held on the 28thof October, 1877;

however, it received its todays name only in

1891. At the time of handover in 1877, thenew railway station, with its hall of a floor

space of 6,153 square meters and a height of

almost 25 meters, and its several side build-

ings became the fifth biggest railway station

of its era of the world.
