Principal’s Report 

Welcome to 2019 I would like to welcome back all the students to Glen Innes High School for 2019. I trust everyone had an enjoyable and restful break and are keen to tackle the challenges of a new school year. Welcome to our Year 7 students and our many new enrolments. I hope they involve themselves in school life and get all they can out of what is on offer to them. 2018 Year 12 Dux Ceremony We will celebrate the last year’s HSC results in a ceremony on Friday 8 February at 12:30pm in the school’s Gymnasium. I look forward to celebrating the terrific success of our HSC students.

School’s Formal Uniform Policy Our school has a formal uniform policy, endorsed by the P&C and SRC. Students at Glen Innes High School are required to wear the dress code at all times. It has been great to see the majority of students in uniform as the year has begun. Our students will be rewarded for being in uniform on our Sentral level system. A full copy of what school uniform items are to be worn at our school is available on our website or by going to the following link: https://gleninnes-h.schools.nsw.gov.au/about-our-school/school-uniform1.html If a student is not in uniform, they will be provided with one and required to wear it. If you are experiencing difficulty in providing a uniform for your child, please contact the school. All enquires are kept strictly confidential. Best Start Year 7 Assessment Our Year 7 students will undertake the Best Start Year 7 online assessment. The Best Start Year 7 assessment includes two online assessments: literacy assessment numeracy assessment. Each assessment is designed to be quick to administer, consisting of 30 multiple choice questions. The Best Start Year 7 assessment addresses a key element in the NSW Government’s Literacy and Numeracy Strategy 2017 – 2020 and is mapped to the NSW Syllabuses and National Literacy and Numeracy Progressions.

Best Start Year 7 will help with identifying students who may require additional support in the development of key literacy and numeracy skills that are fundamental to their success in all subjects in secondary school. Feedback from the assessment will also provide secondary teachers with information to support targeted teaching strategies that meet the learning needs of their students. Feedback from the Best Start Year 7 assessment will be available to teachers soon after our school’s completion of the assessments. P&C Meetings Our school’s P&C Committee held their first meeting for 2019 on Tuesday 5 February. P&C meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month at 7:00pm - all are welcome and encouraged to attend. School Swimming Carnival The school’s Swimming Carnival will take place at the Glen Innes Swim Centre on Wednesday 20 February. This is a compulsory school activity with all students expected to attend. I look forward to students, staff and community coming together for a fantastic event. I hope to see you there! POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING 

PBL at Glen Innes High School Glen Innes High School is a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) school. Our purpose is to create positive learning environments that enable student learning and wellbeing. The three core values of PBL at Glen Innes High School are Respect, Responsibility and Diligence. The school's focus for Term 1 this year is Uniform with students being awarded points for wearing correct uniform to school. These points then accumulate, allowing students to progress through our positive level systems. Students are then rewarded as they progress through the positive levels. There are currently six levels: green, orange, bronze, silver, gold and platinum.

English 21st Century Learning Classes

By now, your child has probably come home and told you that they are in this super big class for English. And you have probably thought to yourself, "What is this crazy new English Head Teacher doing to our kids?" What is it? I'd like to give you an overview of what we are doing in our core English classes. First of all, it's not all that crazy. The concept is also known as Future-focused learning. Future-focused learning prepares students across all curriculum areas and learning stages with skills and capabilities to thrive in a rapidly changing and interconnected world. It connects students and engages their sense of curiosity. Future-focused teachers know and understand the needs and talents of their students. They are flexible and select from a range of effective teaching strategies. Future-focused learning environments inspire students to be leaders of their own learning. Students collaborate and use critical and creative thinking to solve complex problems and become mindful global citizens. Our classroom is an evolving space. We are currently utilising furniture we found in the school to adapt to our needs. We have traditional desks, group spaces, group desk layouts, relaxed chairs and cushions. We also have a new interactive television and whiteboards all around the room for instant teaching opportunities. Technologically, we also have student laptops and tablets, and we will work to add to these options as we progress. Students have Google classrooms which are accessible at home to reflect on lesson content. We will flexibly adapt to these features as we progress. The aim is to provide a space that best meets your child's learning style. The role of teachers is evolving to support more student-centric approaches to better prepare learners for the future workforce, and new approaches to classroom design are supporting this shift. – (NMC/CoSN Horizon Report 2017 K-12 Edition) Why are we doing this? The students have asked, "Where is the front of the classroom?" Our response, "It's wherever the teacher is standing." The end goal is to better prepare your child for the future; to enable them to be self-directed learners who can engage in all types of environments. To be successful in the 21st century, students must be able to work without supervision, in diverse groups, and be productive members of society. Class activities and lessons in this situation will provide your child more opportunities to engage in self-directed learning, collaboration, and social interaction. Do the teachers know what they're doing? In Term 4 last year, we trailed a combined class with team teachers in a Senior English class. We found an increase in motivation almost immediately and students engaged well with the practice. It also allowed for consistency of teaching and learning, making the students' opportunities equitable and extended. English staff have undertaken professional development and wide reading in collaborative teaching and learning strategies. Our collegiality and collective efficacy makes the task of team teaching one that is natural to our interactions. We have the best interests of your children in mind, and we intend to engage and facilitate your child's growth in literacy and future preparedness. How will we gauge success? Later in the Semester, once we have had an opportunity to settle into the process of the new structure, we will send out a survey for students, parents and involved English teachers to reflect on the progress of our new learning environment. English Expectations

The English Department have very clear expectations around Homework and Assessment. If extenuating circumstances exist for non-compliance, please contact your child's teacher or Head Teacher, or send in a note. Students who do not complete homework and have it in class on the due date will be placed in the

English detention room to complete their work. Students who do not complete class work will be placed in the English detention room to complete

their work. Year 7 - 9 Assessment: Students are required to attempt all assessment tasks in each English

class. Failure to submit tasks on the due date, will result in a reduction of 20% per day. Work not submitted by the following week, will achieve a zero (0) or E result. Students will be required to attend lunch time detentions until sufficient work is submitted.

Year 10 Assessment: Students are required to attempt all assessment tasks in each

English class. Failure to submit tasks on the due date, will result in a reduction of 20% per day. Work not submitted by the following week, will achieve a zero (0) or E result. If a student has not applied themselves with diligence and sustained effort to class work, or achieved a satisfactory range of Course Outcomes, this may result in an ‘N’ Award in English for Year 10. Students will be issued with a maximum of two (2) ‘N’ Award warning letters, and may thereafter be rendering themselves ineligible for the award of a RoSA in English. However, students may redeem themselves by completing the task or supplementary work after negotiation with the Head Teacher or Principal; the same may apply to missed Assessment tasks (but a zero mark is still recorded). Failure to gain a RoSA in English may mean a student is ineligible to do the Preliminary Course.

Year 11 & 12 Assessment: Failure to submit work on the due date w ith an

appropriately documented Appendix A, will result in a zero (0) achievement. Failure to submit formative or summative assessment will result in an N letter warning which could impact your child's ability to attain their HSC.

Mathematics Department Developments

Our Head Teacher Mathematics for the year is Mr Drew Bogema, who has come out of retirement for a year to help Glen Innes High School. Drew was formerly Head Teacher Mathematics at Macksville High School on the North Coast and Maths/Science Head Teacher at Dunedoo Central School in the late 1980's and 1990's. He began teaching in Australia in 1974 at Goulburn High School and has taught successfully at Coonamble and Toormina as Careers Adviser and at Dunedoo and Macksville as Head Teacher Mathematics. We will be hosting a Homework Centre from Monday to Thursday from 3:00pm to 5:00pm to assist those students experiencing difficulty and for those to who wish to gain greater proficiency. See Mr Bogema if you are interested in attending. We will also be beginning a Problem of The Week competition shortly. Competition problems will be advertised in the next school newsletter. Students will be able to participate in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior divisions. Prizes will be awarded for successful completion.

Attendance and Absences

Parents of children from Year 7 to Year 12 must ensure their children attend school every day. On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include: being sick or having an infectious disease having an unavoidable medical appointment being required to attend a recognised religious holiday exceptional or urgent family circumstances e.g. attending a funeral. Parents must provide an explanation for absences to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. However, if the school has not received an explanation from you within 2 days, the school may contact you to discuss the absence. Where an explanation has not been received within the 7-day timeframe, the school will record the absence as unjustified on the student’s record. Year 10 & 11 Excursion - Coffs Coast Adventure Centre

The location of the Year 11 2019 excursion can be revealed! It will be to the Coffs Coast Adventure Centre! Those interested Year 11 students have booked their places and we can now confirm that there are spots available for any Year 10 students who would like to go. The excursion will run from Monday 18 March 2019 to Thursday 21 March 2019. The cost of the excursion is $500. Our Year 11 students’ parents/carers are reminded that the payments for the excursion are due as follows: $100 Instalment: Monday 4 February 2019 (Term 1,

Week 2) $100 Instalment: Monday 18 February 2019 (Term 1, Week 4) $100 Final Payment: Monday 4 March 2019 (Term 1, Week 6) Year 10 students’ parents/carers: a deposit of $100 is now due to the front office to secure your child's place.
