l Dear Parents, Carers and Friends,

Last Friday was a magnificent day as we held our annual swimming carnival at

Unanderra Pool. It was wonderful to witness the team spirit, cheering and

encouragement from parents, students, teachers and loved ones as our

competitors competed in their events. This was a special milestone and a proud

moment for our youngest children competing for the first time. Congratulations to

all students who participated and a special congratulation to those students who

will be representing our school at the Central Wollongong District Swimming

Carnival.

A sincere thank you to the many parents who readily volunteered their help – our

intrepid and wonderfully supportive life-saver, our announcer and starter and the

many time-keepers who stood in the searing sun – it was definitely a labour of love

and we couldn’t have done it without you. Of course, a huge thank you needs to

be given to Mr Voysey who has spent many hours preparing and ensuring that the

event was such a success. Mr Voysey will now be busy calculating results to

determine the Figtree Heights Swimming Team for the district event.

This week Mrs Osborne commences her extended leave and we welcome Miss

Janeska full time on 1/2JO. Mrs Grogan is also about to enjoy a few weeks

holiday and we hope she has a wonderful time.

The school grounds were sprayed on the weekend to reduce the number of

mosquitoes and other creepy-crawlies which have inundated us lately. The

classrooms will be sprayed this Friday after school.

A reminder that applications for Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts are

only available on-line, on the school’s website.

Parent Information Sessions

This evening we have the start of our Parent Information Evenings which will run

over the coming weeks. The sessions will commence with a combined presentation

where general information for the Stage will be provided. It is a great way to meet

your child’s teacher, meet the new families of the parent community and ask any

questions directly to the teacher. We thank you for the commitment to your child’s

education. Please see the front of this newsletter for your Parent Information

Session times.

Stage 1: Tuesday, 12th February – 4pm; Miss Davies room

Stage 2: Monday, 11th February - 4pm; Mr Voysey’s room

Stage 3: Monday, 18th February – 4pm; Mrs Thurston’s room

Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten) – Tuesday, 19th February – 4pm; Kindy rooms

The Hive Herald

A note from Mrs Fincher will be distributed today for Years K – 3 children, outlining

the information regarding the Hive (library). You may find the provided answers to

frequently asked questions useful.

P&C Meeting

Next Wednesday, February 20 we will be hosting our first P&C Meeting for the year.

We look forward to welcoming new faces to join the wonderful existing band of

members. Please come along to find out what is happening in our school and help

guide decisions for the future of our students.

l Health Alert

We would like to inform you that we have students at FHPS who have a severe

food allergy to nut products. It is important that there is strict avoidance to this

food in order to prevent a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction. We are asking

your help to provide the student with a safe school environment.

Any exposure to nut products eg. peanuts or hazelnuts may cause a

life-threatening anaphylactic reaction that requires emergency medical

treatment.

To reduce the chance of this occurring, we are asking that you do not send any

nut products (e.g nutella or peanut butter) to school with your child. If your child

has handled these products before coming to school, please be sure your child’s

hands and face have been thoroughly washed before entering the school. We

appreciate your support of these procedures.

Year 6 Figtree High School ‘Try for a Day’ and Year 5 ‘Master Class’ Opportunities

Our senior students have been invited to take part in these two exciting initiatives

and notes have been distributed today. The ‘Master Classes’ provide

opportunities for students to attend a series of three sessions in a range of

specialised subjects.

‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) Agreements

Many students in Stage 3 bring their own laptops (or similar) to use at school.

BYOD is optional for Year 4. Our BYOD Agreement outlines the guidelines and

policies of the Department of Education and our school which govern the safe

and appropriate use of digital technologies and social media platforms for

educational purposes. Teachers will distribute these agreements, which have to

be signed and returned, to any students with a device. Please take time to

thoroughly discuss the content with your child.

‘Clean Up Australia Day’

We will be holding our ‘Clean Up Australia Day’ activities on Friday, 1st March.

Students will be involved in activities at school and in the local community –

watch out for more information in next week’s newsletter.

I hope you have a lovely week,

Warm Regards

Dee

Last week 1D had some very special visitors. We had three chicks and a

hen join our classroom. The chicks were very cute and fluffy. The class got

to pat and hold the chicks. It was a wonderful experience for the

students.
