It was great to such a huge number of boys and their parents attend the Meet the Teams night yesterday. Besides starting to develop a strong relationship with staff it also presents an opportunity for parents to meet each other. Sometimes there is the natural tendency in high school to take a step back for such relationships, especially when teenagers actively try to run interference! Even up until Year 12 it is important to know your son’s friends and their parents. It is natural and healthy for boys’ circles of friendship to grow and for all these relationships to influence the man that he will eventually become. However it is always good for parents to know who these relationships are and the influence that they have.

Students of 7 Da Vinci used a set of dice: one red and one white and magnets to learn the concept of finding the sum of positive and negative integers. The red dice represents negative numbers while the white dice represents positive numbers. The students made a model using the magnets to represent a mathematical sum. They matched up the positive and negative magnets to solve the problem. For example Mr Tenefrancia 7 Da Vinci Mathematics Teacher

Year 8 after school Drama ensemble was off to a great start this week! Students are

refreshing their improvisation skills and working together creating small scenes. The boys had a blast and are looking forward to the rest of the term where they can further develop their skills as an actor. The boys are eager to perform their best works from the ensemble at the Creative Arts Night in term 4 this year! 7 Da Vinci Drama has begun their term looking at all the skills that make a confident actor. This week they have been focusing on Mime. They have created scenes based on the ideas: travelling, conflict and politics. Such great talent already, we look forward to seeing these boys in the invitation only Drama ensemble next year!

The Science Club has had a fantastic start to the year, with students from a range of year groups attending the first Science Club workshop this week. The students learnt all about the process of crystallisation and made their own copper sulfate crystals. They also started testing the effect of cooling rate on the formation of the crystals by heating one solution with a Bunsen burner and leaving a second solution to evaporate slowly at room temperature. The students will observe their crystals and gather their final experimental data next week.

Science Club is on every Wednesday at recess in G1. It is a great opportunity for students to learn all about Science and participate in fun experiments. Everyone is welcome!

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL REPORT

2019 is going to be a huge year for Ashfield Boys’ SRC Team with already many events scheduled and many being organised for the course of the year. I had the pleasure of attending a Prefect Afternoon Tea on 12th February with 4 other of our Senior Prefects (Chao Wang, Argus Alquiros, Travis Campbell and Vincent Li) at Danebank Anglican School for Girls in Hurstville. It was a great opportunity to meet other Student Leaders in our wide Sydney Region and participate in a number of different team building activities. The Senior Prefect Leadership Team have also scheduled our own Prefect Afternoon Tea that will take place on 26thFebruary. This will be a great opportunity to observe all the different school missions that other school leaders have for their own school.

Year 7 students will be having their first vaccination on Thursday 11th April 2019 during Periods 1-4. Representatives from the NSW School Vaccination Program will attend Ashfield Boys High School from 8.30-12pm. A link has been provided for the NSW Department of Health, which provides information regarding the school vaccination program in 26 languages and may be of assistance. http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation/Pages/school_vaccination_language.aspx If you wish for your son to receive their vaccinations at school, please complete the form and ask them to return it to your son’s Roll Call teacher. 2019 the following vaccines will be offered:

I had the pleasure of accompanying four senior students to a luncheon put on by Inner West Neighbour Aid for clients who are residents in this area, living independently at home and who were over the aged of 93. We celebrated four birthdays over the age of 100, with the oldest member 102. The boys represented our school beautifully showing great care, respect and interest in the guests’ eventful lives. The General Manager of Inner West Neighbour Aid Allison Yee-Brogan has expressed her gratitude below. “Thank you for joining us today at our Seniors Festival Luncheon at the Canada Bay Club. Christopher, Chris, Jackie and Eric you displayed maturity, respect, kindness and friendliness. You were able to lift yourself to the standard that is expected of you when spending time with and talking with seniors in our community. We are so proud to have you in our Neighbour Aid community.”

SWIMMING CARNIVAL

The first on the court was our second grade team who aimed to bounce back from a disappointing loss to Randwick in the Sydney North knockout competition. This time the opponent was Homebush’s team who finish one place higher at the end of regular season. The start of the game was duplicated from coach Tyler’s drawing board; rock solid defence was mirrored with fearless attack. Within minutes we were up by 10 points (12-2). The lead was increased to 12 points (21-9) halfway through the first half. The end of first half and start of the second half witnessed Homebush’s team rising from the ashes and closing the gap to only two points (29-27). Two back to back time-outs in combination with concurrent feedback ensured our boys regained the necessary composure in their game. We managed to end the game in a way we started securing a tough, though well deserved win, Ashfield 43 - Homebush 36. Next week, we play in the grand final rematch against North Sydney’s side.

Our U15’s team entered the match against Epping as heavy favourite. Apart from trailing 2 - 0, and 4 - 2, we lead the entire time. Saimone Tuedrea was critical in attack while Jaden Bui and Elvis Li dominated inside the key area. During the second half, coach Tenefrancia gave a chance to all his players to experience the semi-final fever, Ashfield 28 - Epping 22. Billy-Sean Epiha’s unavailability to play for our U14’s squad proved costly. His physical presence, in defence and unpredictability in attack couldn’t be replaced. Despite this, Abdul Banse and Tremaine Hinckson almost led our team to a highly improbable win. With 30 seconds to go, the score was locked at 33 all. In their last possession of the game North Sydney managed to score. We had 10 seconds to make history, and under the enormous pressure we
