Volunteering at TEPS

We love having parents, grandparents and carers volunteering at The Entrance Public School. We are always looking for helpers: in the canteen, the classroom, working in with the gardening group and helping to transport students to sporting and cultural events.

It is a mandatory requirement for anyone who works or volunteers in child-related work in NSW to obtain a Working With Children Check (WWCC). This involves a National

Police Check (criminal history record check) and a review of reportable workplace misconduct.

WWCC is free for volunteers and it is very easy to apply.

Applications can be made either online at https://www.service.nsw.gov.au or visit our local service NSW centre. Clearance to work with children will be valid for 5 years, however, applicants are continuously monitored.

If you currently hold a WWCC for employment, you do not require one for volunteering, however, you will still need to supply a copy to the office.

If you interested in becoming a volunteer at the school please send a note into the office and supply the office with a copy of your WWCC and your insurance / rego details if transporting students.

Thank you for supporting our school. Rachael Bennett

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome to Week 4 and the students have settled quickly back into their routines. Already I have had lots of students bringing outstanding work to show me and I have visited classes and have seen the outstanding quality of our staff and students. Term 1 promises to be a very busy term.

A reminder that student safety is our highest priority and it is very important that the office be able to contact parents or carers. If you have changed address or have new contact details please contact the office to update your information on our system. Good luck to all our students for today’s swimming carnival, I am sure that we will see many swimmers achieving their personal best. All the students in Years 1 to 6 should now have commenced on the Home Reading program. Each night that the students read they should have their reading record signed by an adult. Students receive prizes at different levels and I will be visiting classes and giving incentive rewards for students who are trying their best. Happy reading! A reminder that the toilets at school are for The Entrance Public School students use only. Visitors to the school throughout the day including before school in the morning, and afternoon pick up that need to use the toilets need to see the office and be directed to a staff or visitor toilet. Thank you for your assistance with this issue as it is for the safety of our students and is a child protection issue. This week is cyber safety week and these are a few tips from the Department of Education, Schools A-Z website: Here are eight easy ways to help your kids stay out of trouble in cyberspace:

1. Keep computers out in the open

Your child may think twice about looking at inappropriate websites and won't be able to chat to their friends all night while you think they are doing their homework.

2. Mind your business

Remind your child to keep information such as their name, address, phone number, school and even your credit card number to themselves. When signing up to a chat room, they should use a screen name that is a nickname and not easy to work out. The same goes for choosing passwords – don't make them easy to figure out. If your child is going to put photos on the internet, ensure they don't show them wearing their school uniform – this can be enough to identify your child's school. Also ensure that any photos are not the type that would attract unwanted attention from strangers.

3. Just because it's on the internet, it doesn't mean it's true

Make sure your child uses multiple sources for research, and is careful not to plagiarise.

4. Stranger danger is online, too

Ensure your child never organises to meet up with any strangers they have met online. If they really want to meet up, encourage them to talk to you about it first and insist on going along with them. Remind your children to also be wary opening emails from strangers. They could contain spam (online junk mail), a virus (which will harm your computer), or be from a stranger looking for trouble.

5. Get a filter

Internet filters can help block inappropriate sites for children. None are completely reliable and it's best if you talk about what websites are appropriate with your child so they understand and make the right choice on their own.

6. Encourage your child to talk with you about their online experiences – good and bad

This will make it easier for them if they see something inappropriate or are emailed something unsuitable. If

Page 3: Term 1 Week 4 Wednesday 21 · 2019-11-06 · Term 1 Week 4 Wednesday 21st February 2018 3 they are embarrassed to tell you, persuade them to at least tell a teacher or another trusted

3

they are embarrassed to tell you, persuade them to at least tell a teacher or another trusted adult.

7. Good manners also exist online

Talk about this with your child and it may lead to a decline in bullying behaviour, not to mention the many disagreements that children have with each other.

8. Forever is a long time

A lot of blogs and websites maintain information as part of cyberspace forever. By publishing without thinking of the future, your child's innocent work online may be something that comes up later on and may negatively impact their career and personal life.

Danger signs

Your child constantly sits on the computer in chat rooms or instant messaging, from straight after school to very late at night.

Your child begins showing unexplained money or items that come from "a friend you don't know".

Your child starts being secretive about what they are doing online – this could include anything from minimising screens as you walk past, to not letting you see their blogs/chat/social media sites

Speech problems

All kids learn how to talk and listen at different rates but did you know there’s a general pattern to your child’s language development? Find out more: http://www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au/wellbeing/health/speech-problems

Have a great week!

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Welcome back to school TEPS! The students have settled in beautifully and I would like to say a very big thank you to our wonderful teachers for providing such a smooth start to the year. As usual, we have hit the ground running and we have had Drum Corp in – thanks Mrs Bayfield, our School Leader Induction, the gardening group has started with our green thumb teachers, Mrs Wilson and Mrs Best, some Forensic Science Workshops Years 3 – 6 – thanks Mrs Tolman, and a SUPER swimming carnival! Well done all our students who competed, and to Mrs Haslam for her organisation. Congratulations to our incredible Kinder staff for a successful start – your patience, dedication and tirelessness is so appreciated. And a big WELCOME to our new TEPS parents. You are part of a wonderful school and community and I look forward to meeting you all. I have seen some amazing work already this year, as well as having some lovely helpers in the first few weeks.

Thanks for sharing your writing Paul, Jarmin and Gabby form K-6B; your clever maths skills, Noah from 1/2D for helping me the very first day back, and Amber and Chloe from 3K.

Just a reminder how important it is for your child to be at school every day - it is vital you set a positive before school routine for your family. And this helps everyone in the long run! Pack lunches the night before, have uniforms ready to go – both shoes located! If your child is away, please call the school or send a note. We monitor unexplained absences and will phone you after 3 unexplained days. Have a great fortnight TEPS. There is a whole school assembly this Friday (23.2.18) – all welcome. Nicole Heazlewood Deputy Principal

Koori Choir

Once again our school is looking for students to participate in the Tuggerah Lakes Learning Communities highly successful KOORI CHOIR in 2018. The Koori

Choir performs at special functions and events throughout the year and participants take part in numerous workshops to develop their singing talents. The Koori Choir is a fun and exciting way for students to celebrate their Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture. Aboriginal students from Years 3,4,5,6 are encouraged to join this choir. If your child is interested in participating in the Koori Chior, encourage them to speak with Ms Willson, Mrs Canobie or Mr Walker. The first interschool choir workshop will take place here at TEPS in March.

K-6 B NEWS

It has been wonderful to see our children back at school with such a positive and “can do” attitude. New challenges have been met head on and we are already

seeing some fantastic work being produced across all key learning areas. A newsletter was sent home last week detailing some of the learning that will be happening in K6B this Semester, stay tuned for even more plans later in the term.

Did you know that you can record an audio comment for your child to hear on Seesaw? This means that instead of needing help to read Mum or Dad’s comment on their work, they can listen to it themselves. How empowering and motivating is that! If you need any help with this or any aspects of Seesaw please ask one of us. Mary Best & Deb Eastment Support Class Team

KINDERGARTEN NEWS

Welcome to Kindergarten

Congratulations to all of the amazing kindergarten children who have done such a fabulous job settling into the routines of school. All of the children are

happy and engaged and ready to learn!

Please Label EVERYTHING

Just a friendly reminder to please label ALL of your child’s belongings. We have had a number of containers, drink bottles and lunchboxes left at the end of each day.

Kinder Sport

Kindergarten’s sport day is Thursday - Please send your child in their coloured sports shirt and joggers.

Communication

If you have any questions or concerns regarding your child your first port of call is your child’s class teacher. If the matter is not resolved or you would like further clarification you can arrange to speak with our Early Stage One Assistant Principal – Donna Andrews. Please phone the office or send in a note and we can organise a mutually convenient time. Finally, I would like to welcome all of the new families who have joined our TEPS team! Have a wonderful week! Donna Andrews (KD), Nicole Quye (KQ), Nikki Wilson (KW), Dianne Butler and Adam Lonergan (KBL)

STAGE 1 NEWS

Welcome to the new school year. Our Year 1 and 2 classes have settled in well.

We have 3 Year 1 classes; 1KN- Mrs Rebecca Kelaher and Mr Tien Nguyen 1P- Miss Rachel Perry 1M – Mrs Mardi McFarlane 1 composite class 1/2D- Miss Mel Dawson

and 2 Year 2 classes; 2K- Mrs Barbara Knowles 2C –Miss Teona Cooper

These classes have been formed with careful consideration given to each child. The teachers have been busy getting to know your children, establishing classroom routines and expectations and will be working together across each grade for a productive school year. Mrs Knowles is the Stage Supervisor for Stage 1. If you have any concerns about

your child, please contact the class teacher first, the Stage supervisor will become involved if the situation requires it. Home reading will be the focus for Year 1 and 2 students

and has commenced. The book your child brings home will be an easy/independent book that will build up their confidence and fluency in oral reading. In class, your child will be reading from their instructional level where they have the guidance of their reading teacher. If your child experiences any difficulty with home reading, please note on the sheet or let the class teacher know. The Parent Information Session is being held on Wednesday 7

th March at 3.30pm in 1P/2C classrooms. It

will be great to meet the parents and carers of our students this afternoon. If you are unable to attend and wish to know what was discussed, please contact your child's teacher. If you would like to meet individually with your child’s classroom teacher to discuss any issues regarding your child you will need to contact the office and organise another meeting time. Regards Stage 1 Team

STAGE 2 NEWS

Welcome to Stage 2, 2018. We would especially like to welcome the new families that have enrolled at The Entrance PS. I hope your time at our school is enjoyable, rewarding and full of learning. All students have settled into their new classes well and have been focussing on positive behaviour choices to allow for maximum learning opportunities. Blue chart behaviours are best!

The Stage 2 Teachers for this year are: 3C: Mrs Canobie 3K: Mrs Kirk 3/4D: Mrs Duncan 4A: Ms Ambrose 4B: Mrs Burke 4H: Mrs Haslam

The Entrance PS thrives on keeping the communication line open from school to home each and every day. If you have concerns about any issue and wish to discuss them with your child’s classroom teacher, please contact the office so that an appointment can be scheduled, or a returned phone call made. Remember an appointment is necessary as teachers cannot speak to you during teaching time or after the 9:15am morning bell. NOTES are sent home on a regular basis. It is important that

you always check your child’s bag for notes. Every note that is sent home should always be read by families. Placing notes on your fridge door is a good way to remind you when events are coming up or if money needs to be returned to school for excursions and other exciting events. Most importantly don’t forget to download our school App – this gives daily messages and reminders. SPORTS IN SCHOOLS is held each Monday morning for

Stage 2 this term. This program offers unique experiences for students to participate in a wide range of team building and co-operative learning activities. Sports in Schools, concentrates on the basic fundamental motor skills and promotes having fun, feeling good about oneself and being well.

GRADE SPORT This year we are running grade sport due to

the restricted playground space and the inclusion of extra Physical Education activity sessions with Mr Jamie Stephens each week. The sessions are as follows: 4H, 4B & 4A will have their grade sport day session on Mondays. 3C, 3K & 3/4D will have their grade sport session on Thursdays.

We ask that students wear their sports uniforms on their grade sport day. ATTENDANCE A reminder that if your child is absent from

school, you can ring through the reason for absence to our office, or send an absentee note with your child the next day they return to school. If your child is absent, sick for three consecutive days, a doctor’s certificate is required. Remember, if you are planning a holiday during the school term a request for exemption is required from the Principal, four weeks prior to departure. These are Departmental requirements and the expectations are that every student should be at school every day, unless they are sick. STAGE 3 NEWS

Hello and welcome back to what is going to be an epic 2018! Firstly, I’d like to welcome our new Stage 3 students and families to TEPS. TEPS is a wonderful school that provides great learning opportunities for our students. I look forward to

working with you to ensure your children have a positive experience here at our school. The Stage 3 Teachers want your children to have a great year. We are working towards having an activity per term.

Our first Stage 3 activity will be

an excursion to Palmdale to participate in the CARES

(Community and Road Education Scheme) program. The CARES Program is a road and bicycle education program for Stage 3 students (Years 5 and 6) students delivered by two NSW Police Officers at the Central Coast Lifetime Learning Centre (CCLLC).

The CARES program is a combination of practical activities and classroom lessons which provide students with road safety knowledge and an opportunity to develop their

practical skills. The day consists of three components. The first is held in the classroom and prepares the children for the practical components with the use of modern audio visual aids. Session two is conducted in the outdoor covered area where children participate in an obstacle course enhancing their basic cycle skills. The third session is held on the roadway and exposes the students to a variety of real road situations in a controlled, safe environment. Permission notes were handed out in Week 3. The dates for this excursion are the 10

th and 11

th of April (Year 5 and Year

6 will go on separate days). The cost of this excursion is $10

which will cover transport and entry. For more information please refer to the excursion note.

The biggest activity on the

Stage 3 agenda for this year will be our camp to Canberra.

This will run from 4

th July to 6

th July (3

days, 2 nights). Each day will be filled with activities such as visiting

Parliament House, National Gallery, War Memorial, Australian Institute of Sport, Questacon and CSIRO. A deposit of $50 is to be paid to the office to secure a spot for this camp. Please make contact with the school if you are in need of financial assistance or if you have two children in Stage 3. Please feel free to make an appointment with your child’s class teacher (before school/after school) if you have any questions or queries. Kind Regards Miss Martinez - S3 Relieving Assistant Principal Mrs. Robinson, Mr. McInnes, Mrs. Chaffer, Mrs. Bayfield and Mr. Lonergan

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

A range of environment initiatives and activities take place at TEPS throughout the year. In 2018, we are replacing the previous system of student-elected Environment Representatives, with a more inclusive, interest-based approach. As a result, participation in out-of-school activities and excursions will be offered to students who have demonstrated ongoing interest and participation in school projects, such as gardening group. Gardening Group commenced last week and will run every Tuesday lunchtime for ALL interested students. The response in the first week was fantastic, with more than 60 enthusiastic students helping to clear our garden ready for planting. Each week students who attend can go into the draw to win a cooking session with K6B. Last week’s winners were Jiya and Parneet from 2C. Congratulations girls! A huge thanks to two wonderful Mums, Mary-Jane and Shannon, who gave their time on Thursday afternoon to help Mrs Best continue the “war on weeds”, which took over our garden during the holidays. Our garden is now looking refreshed and we are looking forward to a new batch of fresh vegetables and herbs soon. Please note the produce in the garden is picked by students and is used in cooking programs across the school. With the arrival of our new mobile kitchen, cooking will be more accessible to a larger number of students and will increase the demand for fresh garden produce. Occasionally we have excess produce which is sold at the office for a small donation, which goes to buy more plants and equipment for the garden. We ask that parents do not pick the produce for their own use. Thank you. Thank you, Mrs Best & Ms Wilson On behalf TEPS Environment Team
