The sudden arrival of the monsoon last week seems to have caught a few families “off guard”. A number of students were arriving at school very wet without raincoats or umbrellas. If your child makes their own way to school, please make sure they have appropriate attire to keep them dry.

It is also advisable to pack a spare set of clothes in their school bag. If your child’s school bag is not waterproof, please pack their spare clothes and school books in a plastic bag before placing in their back pack—a plastic Woolworths or Coles bag is 15c well spent and make great inner liners for school bags.

A good tip to keep school shoes dry is pack them in a waterproof bag and wear thongs on the way to school. Students can then change into their school shoes once school starts.

You are invited to

Morning Tea

When: Friday 8 March, 9.30 am (directly after assembly)

Where: Wanguri Primary School Conference Room, entry through the front office

Who: All families are welcome. Come along to learn more about the Wanguri Primary School

community, its Educational Programs and to meet other families. Representatives from DCO,

VVCS, and the Darwin Community Houses will also be in attendance.

Hello everyone. As Specialist Teacher at Wanguri Primary School I am lucky enough to be able to work with all teachers across the year levels. I have the opportunity to hear about the ways our teachers plan for student learning to make their teaching engaging and meaningful. We are very lucky at Wanguri to have so many fantastic teachers.

Often at the start of a new school year, teachers spend part of their time establishing expectations for student learning, and for conduct within the classroom and around the school. This week I would like to share with you the way Mrs Woodroffe is implementing this process with her students to ensure that each one is Safe, Kind and their Best!

Mrs Woodroffe has established a display of the school expectations around the theme of the barramundi. We know the barra holds special significance for Wanguri Primary School as our school is located on Larrakia (saltwater people) land.

The students in 6 Woodroffe have made posters about the ways in which they can Be Safe, Be Kind and Be their Best and used the barra as a symbol. They have a fantastic jelly fish display with its many arms where students who have lent a ‘helping hand’ (being kind) have their name highlighted.

The student who has done their best to Be Safe, Be Kind and Be their Best becomes the ‘star fish’ for the day. Mrs Woodroffe also has a poster with a boat titled the SS Wanguri, with a mermaid holding a fishing rod and a sign reminding students to ‘get caught being good’.

Mrs Woodroffe has used the barra symbol all around the classroom and because of the work she has done with her students, each time they see the barra symbol they are reminded of Wanguri’s expectations. I think the way Mrs Woodroffe has established the culture of her classroom has been very effective and is relevant to Wanguri Primary School. Fantastic work Mrs Woodroffe!

Samantha Brannelly, Specialist Teacher.
