New Building Update The construction of our new Administration and Student Services building is progressing apace and we are still on schedule for a 32 week build. All demolition works have been completed and the concrete for the additional building space has been poured. One of the conditions of the building contract is that all noisy works are coordinated around examinations and events in the hall. The Year 12 Mid –Course exams have not been affected by the construction work as only quiet works have occurred during exams.

Improved Signage Some of the things we have been doing to upgrade the site for the boys are less obvious to parents than a new building. We have re-numbered all the rooms in a more logical pattern and have installed clear signage that helps with way finding. This helps new students, Year 7 and (an often confused) Principal find classrooms more quickly and easily. “Ponder while you pee” In line with our school philosophy that every space should be a learning space, we are trialling “ponder while you pee” in the Senior boys’ toilets. We have installed commercial style advertising frames over the urinals and in the cubicles. These currently display positive teenage mental health messages to our captive audience!. Our plan is to rotate a series of different positive health messages as part of the Wellbeing Team’s program of proactive physical and mental health promotion. If this is successful we will install similar facilities in the Junior boys’ toilets. P&C Meeting Monday evening is the next P&C meeting. The last meeting was incredibly well attended and you are most welcome to come along. The meeting starts at 7pm in the Common Room.

WHAT ARE YOU READING?
Mr Hopwood shares his favourite books. I recently interviewed Mr Hopwood about significant books to him. Some reflected a period in life and others were important for the experience and ideas explored. His favourite books remain 1984, Emma, The Hobbit, Interview with a Vampire and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. The reason that he liked these specific books is because the books all take him away to completely different worlds. He prefers books bordering sci-fi/fantasy because they are not familiar, that they are completely new, different, and original and this, to him, is much better than reading a book that is set in a familiar environment with familiar characters and over used plots and characters. I totally agree and considering I have rarely sat down and gotten lost about books set in real places unless it is for homework and would much prefer to be taken to another world.

PROBABILITY: EXPERIENCE, EXPERIMENT PREDICTION
Students in Year 9 completed an activity on Probability. They arranged particular events on the probability scale from impossible to certain. Students then discussed when and where each event occurs. Mr Kobeissi Mathematics Teacher

Science club patrons were treated to an exothermic chemical show (at a safe distance). The students were learning about the risks involved with a class of chemicals called oxidants. Oxidants provide the oxygen needed for combustion to occur. For this reason oxidants are stored far away from chemicals that combust easily.

HSC MUSIC STUDY DAY
Last Friday members of our HSC Music class ventured out to Rooty Hill High School to participate in the HSC Music Study Day. The highlight of the study day was a 2-hour performance session by HSC candidates from across Sydney and The Blue Mountains. The performers were critiqued by experienced HSC markers. Bryan Hong performed Chopin’s Fantaisie-Impromptu Op. 66 and his performance was very well received by the HSC markers, audience and other music teachers in attendance. It was a real testament to Bryan’s hard work and talent.

ZONE SWIMMING CARNIVAL
Last Thursday, the Zone Swimming Carnival was held at Sydney Olympic Park. Despite having the smallest squad our swimmers performed exceptionally well. The standout performer was Marlon Makin (Year 7) who won 50m, 200m freestyle and 50m backstroke events, and finished second in 100m freestyle. Connor Anagnostopoulos (Year 9) won 100m freestyle and 50m breaststroke events, while Lloyd Nosworthy (Year 7) captured the second spot in 50m backstroke event.
All our swimmers are looking forward to further improve their results at the Regional Swimming Carnival that will be held at Sydney Olympic Park later this month.
