From the Principal’s Desk...JULY

02 JOHN MCGLASHAN COLLEGE JULY 2014

We have had a fantastic half year. There is a real sense of purpose and energy in all aspects of the college. In the last eight weeks I’ve been taking groups of prospective students and parents on a tour of the college and I am proud of what is on display. The day to day routine is well established, very settled yet dynamic.

Applications for 2015 boarding positions have now closed with more than double the enrolments for the number of places available. The Open Night and Open Afternoon for prospective students will be held on the evening of Tuesday the 29th July and the afternoon of Thursday 31st July. This is our chance to showcase the college at it’s best. On behalf of the student group and parent body I wish to acknowledge the commitment and dedication of the Board of Trustees and the Board of Proprietors. We are fortunate to have boards full of wisdom, professionalism and empathy. The proprietors feature Keith McArley (Chairman BOP), John Anderson (Deputy Chairman), David Thompson (Chairman Finance and Property), and Suzie Johnstone (Chairperson Boarding Committee). The Board of Trustees includes Barry Kelk (Chairman), Sally McMillian (Deputy Chair) and James Reid (Chairman of the Finance Committee). Other board members are Tony Sycamore, Jane Leahy, Jane Davis, Neal Wallace, David O’Malley, Dawn Sangster, George Friedlander, John Guthrie, Ainslie Anderson (Staff Representative) and Vivian Griffiths (Student Representative). All of these people give massive service to the students, parents and the college as a whole. The quality and integrity of our two boards should not to be taken for granted. Your boys are consumers of, and contributors to, a ‘culture of learning’ at McGlashan that has a foundation which is second to none. The students are privileged to be able to take advantage of our school wide, one to one, laptop and iPad programme. The staff are continually upskilling in order to deliver collaborative opportunities and access to information that new technologies offer. Staff and students have engaged in a full range of strategies in order to lift levels of achievement school wide, both collectively and individually. Term three will require a consolidation of these tactics as the majority of boys prepare for end of year ‘high stakes’ examinations. An energy of maturity and good humour exists. Let’s continue to build our ‘community of learning’ as the year progresses. The boys deserve a well-earned two week break wherever that may be … skiing (if it snows?), working, reading, training, or maybe even sleeping. We look forward to seeing them back refreshed and ready to go on Monday 21st July. Take care and best regards Neil Garry Principal [email protected]

International Department

General Update It has been a busy term for our international students and it feels like it has certainly raced by. We have had two university visits, one from the University of Canterbury and one from the University of Otago. They spoke about the study pathways for our students as well as living options and scholarships. A lot of the senior students had many good questions to ask and everyone enjoyed the pizza! Some of our students are going back home for the holidays and we wish them a safe trip and a great time with their friends and families. For everyone staying here we hope you will have a restful break and come back refreshed, ready for the second half of the year. We look forward to welcoming you all back next term!

Homestay We would like to thank all our home stay families for the great work they are doing with the boys! We are planning another homestay meeting next term and everyone who is interested in becoming a homestay parent (short term or long term) and all of our existing ones are warmly invited. Date and time to be confirmed.

Student experiences Some of our students have the chance to spend a weekend or some time in the holidays with a Kiwi family. This is an invaluable experience for our international students as their backgrounds are so very different to the lives they experience here. We are very grateful to the parents who have opened their homes to our students. If you would like to invite one of our international students into your home, please contact us!

In 2014, I went to Ben Morris’ house. A week before he heard I have never been to a farm before. So one weekend I went to his house. After one and half hours of driving in the car, the sky was starting to get dark. We were driving over a series of mountains. We finally got to the farm and it was very dark. The first thing we had to do was feed the farm dog. The house had no light around it so we had to use a flashlight to see what we were doing. We were the only humans for miles around.

On the second day he took me to the deer farm. We moved the sheep from one paddock to another (they called it mustering). Then we went duck shooting. This is my first time see a live animal killed except fish. My impression is the animal is not like human. It is better to eat more vegetable and reduce carbon emissions, than to kill and eat animals.

July 2010, I went New Zealand study at Intermediate School for 1 and half years. I went back to Korea and after a year came back to New Zealand again.

Feb 2013, I stayed at John McGlashan College for 1 and half years. I had a lot of friends and we talked, played, ate, slept and sometimes went somewhere with them. It was really fun and I think I will miss that time a lot. I learnt a lot of things and

had lots of fun times. Also my English has been improved and is better than before. Even though it felt like a long time it was quite a short part of my life. I won’t forget the time I spent here. If someone comes to my country I will welcome him or her like I have been welcomed here. I have been to 5 schools, but after my experience here, John McGlashan College is the best school yet.

Special

Achievements

Football Daniel Gruppelaar has been selected in the Football Otago Youth Development Academy squad that will participate in the U17 Dale Farm Milk Cup competition in Coleraine Northern Ireland. He will be departing on 20th July and returning to New Zealand by 5th August.

Surfing The final round of the secondary schools surfing competition was held at St. Clair this week. This was a weekly competition with 30 surfers and body boarders competing. Congratulations to Charlie Cox who finished an impressive 3rd, boxing well above his weight!

Ben Mitchell recently took part in the NZSS Cross Country Championships. Ben’s race was run over 6 km across soft muddy ground. It was also wet and windy. Although Ben had an unfortunate start and got boxed in the first flurry of the race, Ben managed to move through the field throughout the remainder of the race with no-one overtaking him. He finished strongly in 16th position (out of 169 runners), finishing just 32 seconds behind the winner. Congratulations Ben on your great performance. First lap (1km): 2mins 48secs. Second lap (2km): 7mins 41secs. Finish time: 10mins 29secs. Finishing position: 16th.

Singing

At John McGlashan singing is becoming a greater part of our community. With regular full school singing now taking place and preparation for a house singing competition, a focus on building the vocal heart of John McGlashan is underway. The boys have been meeting to practice on a Wednesday morning and we are to have our final on Monday at Assembly time. Each house will be asked to present the National Anthem and the first two verses of “Better-Man” by ‘Robbie Williams’. More to follow in a coming newsletter once placings are announced. Just two weeks ago, 13 John McGlashan boys proudly represented their school at a The Big Sing Competition in the Town Hall. The boys worthily received a standing ovation from their peers for their own selection performance of the ‘Temptation’s’ classic “My Girl”. Directorship duo, Fei Hsia and Phil Cahill are working to build on the solid foundation, which was laid last year and continued this year. The choir is about building a group of young singers who not only enjoy working together to make a great sound, but also understanding how they are doing so. The choral programme Fei Hsia and Phil are working on, aims to train the singers in good vocal technique to support developing voices. This training is applicable regardless of the genre of music your son might be interested in singing. Fei Hsia and Phil both come from musical backgrounds. They have both represented NZ as members of our country’s national choirs and have had classical vocal training – the foundation of good singing – at the University of Otago. At John McGlashan we have a unique opportunity unlike other boys’ schools in the region – students joining the choir at Year 7 have the potential to develop their skills over a seven year period. Our choral programme aims to develop singers of all ages and develop their voices as much as possible in their time at JMC. The school choir is looking for further singers to audition for the rest of this year’s programme. This isn’t an American Idol style audition; it is all about ensuring your boy is able to keep up with the pace of the group. For boys who aren’t quite at the stage of singing in the main group, the option of an un-auditioned group may be offered, subject to interest. We are looking for at least another 10-15 singers from all year groups to join the choir. The choir rehearses every Monday from 4-7pm in the music room. Interested singers are welcome to come to a rehearsal to see what this is all about. Please contact me if you are interested in this opportunity. There is also singing tuition available at school, or after school by arrangement. Please contact me for more details. If you are interested in finding out m o r e a b o u t t he s i n g in g opportunities at JMC please feel free to contact me so I can put you in touch with Fei Hsia and Phil. Bruce James

Absences

It is a requirement of the Education Act for us to record and submit all student attendance. School starts at 8.40am every morning and all boys are expected to be here on time.

If your son is away or going to be late please phone the school office by 9.00am to record absences. All absences should be phoned in by parents not students.

If a student is marked absent, his parents will be contacted so please ensure we have up-to-date details.

Otago Southland Relay Race

John McGlashan College entered two senior teams and one junior team in the Otago Southland Relay Races held on Wed 4th June at Milton. Our Senior A team had some impressive runs. Wilson Mitchell who led the field home and posted the 3rd fastest run of the day ran the first leg. Although solid legs were run by all members of the team, JMC A were unable to hold onto this lead and by the last leg were second and trailing to OBHS by 40 seconds. Oli Chignell ran the final leg and again showed his class by setting a blistering pace. He ran the only sub 6 minutes lap time (5mins 46secs) and managed to reduce the gap from 40 seconds to 9 seconds, bringing the team home in second place. Our Senior B team and Junior Boys team also performed strongly to finish 5th and 4th overall respectively.

Waihi The 15th and 16th of June , saw the junior winter interschool against Waihi take place. This year saw 45 or so boys head up to Winchester in South Canterbury for the annual fixture. Waihi place plenty of emphasis on their sport with it being mandatory for the boys there to train one hour a week each day at their chosen sport. Subsequently our boys always find it a real challenge against such well prepared sides and although this year was no different our performances were very pleasing indeed.

The interschool kicked off almost immediately with hockey under lights at a very chilly Aorangi Park. Although Waihi were recently ranked third in New Zealand for hockey, our boys made a strong start and dominated the opening exchanges. Waihi's experience and class did eventually did win out though with late goals at the end of each half blowing the score out to 6-0 in favour of the hosts in what was generally a very even battle.

The following morning saw both football codes take the field. Soccer started things off with our boys looking to avenge a narrow loss from last year. Things did not start well though and McGlashan were down a goal almost immediately in the 3rd minute. Despite the set back our boys managed to create plenty of chances and headed in at the turn around 3-1 up thanks to goals form Ollie Gilmour, Adam Tait and Cade McRae. Waihi fought hard to narrow the lead in the second half but cool finishing from Harrison Biggs and Tait again saw us comfortably home 5-3 at the final whistle.

The last match of the day was the rugby and our boys played exceedingly well against a tough and physical opposition who play together every weekend in the local South Canterbury competition. McGlashan even took an early lead with a smartly taken try from halfback Sam Hope before Waihi's size and strength saw them eventually amass 57 points in reply. It was by no means one way traffic though and our boys had plenty of ball as well mananging 27 points of their own. Tries to Ruaidhri Brosnan, Max Wolf and two to the hard running Dom Morrison completing our highest points tally against Waihi ever. A tremendous effort.

On behalf of the staff present and the boys as well we would like to thank Tiny Carruthers and Angela Button for their work organising the trip, Waihi for being gracious hosts and for the dozen or so parents who drove up to cheer us on. Overall trip can be viewed as a major success.

At the Extra Spelling Quiz 2014, The JMC Year 8 Mru team came 3rd but we couldn't go up on stage because there were two many 2nd place winners. Our team was made up of Tim Scott, Josh Hope and Harrison Biggs. Patrick Zhang, David Cannon and Thomas Hartono also got in the mid-90s out of 100. Olivier Pagé and Neil Hutton also did very well. The quiz was held at Tahuna intermediate and the Tahuna girls team eventually won scoring 98/100. Many thanks to Mrs Ruru for organising the JMC teams and marking on the day. 40 Hour Famine

This year’s 40 Hour Famine was an amazing turnaround from last year -

from $1770 in 2013 to over $4400 this year (in Mathematical terms a

248% increase); and this from approximately 50 boys. This amount is

the highest ever from the school. Thank you to the boys who committed

themselves so well and to parents who supported and encouraged their

boys. Vivian Griffiths and David Marshall raised just under $1000

between them. They have consistently performed well in this regard.

And there will be many grateful families in Malawi who will benefit from

this money. I wish my successor as school organiser all the best in this

task.

Go Go Go ..... McGlashan did ... and read! (A lot) The 2014 Go McGlashan Read extravaganza has recently come to a close, and has been a real success this year, thanks to the superb efforts from our boys and the very generous contribution from the McGlashan Community. Well done boys and well done You! Breaking with tradition, our Year 7 and 8 class winners were Mrs Ruru’s 8MRU! They read for an incredible 440 hours and raised a spectacular $823! These boys were streets ahead of the competition and will win Chupachups and chocolates for the class to munch on. The picture shows 10MB, the winning form class, who individually raised over $1000 dollars. This is a fine effort - and a great last hurrah for our Year 10 boys in their last year as a part of this tradition. The boys, deservedly and easily one the Year 10 competition, racking up an amazing 513 hours of reading, as well as the money mentioned already. And to the victors, the spoils - in this case a pizza lunch last Friday - Perfect. Across all classes, the effort was superb. Standout individuals included: Ben Monaghan from 7MRO who raised the most money; a whopping $180.50! Ben Carr from 10MB, tallied up a remarkable 53.5 hours over the two weeks, raising a sizable chunk of cash in the process. In addition, the following boys were all awarded prizes for their excellent effort: Jonathan Brook 7AHO, Liam Robertson 7MRO; Martin Page 8MRU; Olivier Pagé, 8ADU; AJ Visagie, Ben Mitchell 9DCA; Ben Teviotdale 9SPO; Alex Brenssell 9LTA; Jack McLaughlan 9GAV; Gene Turner 10GP; Max Smith 10MB; Hayden Gillespie 10TC; and Taylor Mechen 10MB. All got their money and booklets back in on time, winning a movie pass for their efforts. But it’s not just about the prizes - the theme of this year’s event was ‘Unlock Your Mind’ There’s no doubt the effort boys put into reading has a very real impact on their performance across all their subjects - there is no better, and more enjoyable way to improve your vocabulary, syntax, imagination and even character. And now, thanks to the contributions of all involved, there will be a great deal more material from which to choose from in order to do this, in our own Library. A good chunk of the money will go straight into the books Mrs Garry chooses for our boys. She’s now got some serious shopping to do. More significant, however, is the money raised for the Dunedin Night Shelter - this years chosen charity. They provide emergency shelter for Dunedin’s most vulnerable citizens. This organisation has been challenged by the need to expand and purchase two properties. They are currently immersed in a fundraising drive, “take a bite of the elephant” so it will fantastic to be able to offer them our support through funds raised. All and all, a great success - thanks again for all your hard work - and an especial thanks to Mrs Angela Thomson, for her tireless enthusiasm and excellent organisation, without which, this would never happen.

'The Exponents' Concert Huge Success

On the 21 June we played host to 'The Exponents' in a fundraising initiative by JMC Rugby. It was a huge night up close and personal with one of New Zealand's iconic rock bands. JMC Rugby would like to extend thanks to everyone that gave up their time to make the night the great success it was. As well as to extend special thanks to David & Sam Gent for making the night possible. Year 11 Microbiology Workshop

On June 25 the Year 11 science students who are currently doing the biology rotation travelled to the University of Otago Microbiology Department to take part in a workshop. At different stations students took part in different activities. This included the analysis of electron microscope images, discussion of different foods produced using microbes, looking at agar plates of microbes cultured from the air and viewing yeast and penicillium fungi using light microscopes to name a few. Highlights were the analysis of water samples where many rotifers were seen and the examining of bacterial plaque from their own mouths. A big thanks to Dr Judith Bateup for running the workshop and to Phd student Farah who

assisted.

THE FRENCH EXCHANGE Bonjour tout le monde! The French exchange with the Centre International de Valbonne is always a huge success and our current Year 13 boys were lucky enough to have this wonderful experience for 7 weeks over the Christmas holiday. They visited all the iconic sites in the South of France; Nice, Monaco, Cannes, Antibes, St Tropez….the list goes on. As usual they can’t wait to get the opportunity to return and I am sure they will be making the most of the many scholarships available to French students at the University of Otago in the next few years. Our current Year 12 boys have just met their exchange partners. The French students have settled into a comprehensive ESOL programme which allows them to visit many landmarks in the area whilst practising their English. I would like to thank all our wonderful parents who make their stay such a memorable experience. Our current Year 10 and 11 boys will be receiving information about the French exchange soon and I would like to encourage parents whose boys study French to give them the opportunity to participate in this exceptional exchange. It is rare for any school to have such close ties with a French school and this exchange has now been running for over 16 years. We have had brothers and sisters participating in the exchange and have some lovely tried and tested exchange families. We also find that the exchange is not the end. Many of our boys and their families have gone to France to meet their exchange families once the official exchange has ended. Some of our students have found work in France thanks to the contacts they made on exchange. The French students are also fortunate to have a language assistant for the year. Maud has been a welcome addition to the department and has been helping the boys improve their conversational French.

Matangi Whenua Earlier this week two year 11 teams took part in the annual Matangi Whenua Geography Quiz run by the geography department of Otago University. The quiz focused on the geographic layout of New Zealand, but also featured factors such as transpiration and other natural land processes. The John McGlashan B team placed 2nd in the competition, 0.5 points behind the leading team.

Agricultural Science Trips Earlier this term, the Year 13 Agricultural Science class visited the Foveran Deer Park in

Kurow. The purpose of the visit was to better understand deer farming in New Zealand and

specifically whether or not venison exports are still a profitable enterprise, the topic of the

boys’ present internal assessment. Barry, farm manager for the past 25 years, kindly showed

us around the park and answered the many questions we had about the deer industry. The

highlight of the day, besides the amazing ‘pub’ lunch in Kurow

(see Luke Small’s mammoth mixed grill meal!), was the four-

wheel drive tour ‘through the valleys and over the hills’ to see the

deer herds, sheep and cattle that populate the park. It was a long

return trip to make in a day, but the boys enjoyed the outing and

returned armed to take on the research assignment.

The Year 10 Rural Studies boys were privileged to visit Simon and Kirstin Engelbrecht’s sheep and beef farm recently. It was quite a wet day, but the

boys still made the best of the brilliant opportunities Simon afforded them. After an introduction to sheep farming and some insights into wool, we set

out to watch TB testing. A few of the boys were able to help herd the cattle mob to the testing station. A little later, Simon brought his award winning

hogget’s into the sheds and divided the boys up into teams to compete in a drafting competition. Despite the fact that many of the boys had drafted

often, the exercise was extremely valuable as they increased their knowledge about what to look for in the ‘perfect’ sheep. Kirstin then treated us all to

an amazing lamb and sausage lunch (yes, salads too!), and everyone was pleased to have some time out of the rain and cold near the fire. It was a

fantastic day and good for the boys to visit one of the top South Island sheep and beef farms, and understand why the Engelbrechts were leading the

way in the industry. We all left with a new appreciation of the myriad of skills one needs to be a successful farmer!

Otago Secondary School Cross Country Championships,

12th June 2014

John McGlashan College had some great success at the recent Otago Cross Country Championships held at Kaikorai Valley College. Overall an impressive 11 boys finished in the 10. In the first race of the day, Josh Stoddard had an excellent run to lead the field home, finishing 17 seconds ahead of the second placed runner from Kings. Ben Mitchell also had a superb run finishing only 1 second behind the 2nd place finisher. Josh, Ben and Alex Byars secured 2nd place for the team. In the under 15 boys we had two top ten finishers. Dom Brosnan had a very strong run, managing to pick off a number of runners in the second half of the race to finish 6th. Dom, Seb Sole and Toby McDonald finished 3rd in the teams event. Oli Chignell continued his impressive form once again by leading the field from start to finish. By the final lap Oli had put a huge lead over the rest of the field and finished 1 minute 24 seconds ahead of the next finisher. Also running strongly in the under 16 race was Lochie Chittock and Cam McDowell who both dug deep to pick up a few crucial positions in order to secure the team win for JMC over Kings High School. The last race of the day was the Senior Boys and yet again John McGlashan College showed their strength with four boys finishing in the top 10 and securing 1st position for the senior team. Wilson Mitchell had a good run and finished strongly to secure 2nd position. Nic Taylor came home in 5th position. In summary, John McGlashan College teams showed their strength by winning 2 out of 4 of the team races, came second in one and 3rd in the other. Individual performances were also strong with two 1sts, one 2nd and two 3rd positions. Well done to all those who took part. Summary of Results (top 10 finishers). For full results click here. Yr 11 Drama The Year 11 Drama class were lucky enough to have Cindy Diver and Julie Edwards come in and teach the students about verbatim theatre. Verbatim theatre is a form of documentary theatre in which a play was constructed from the precise words spoken by people interviewed about the topic of dementia. Diver and Edwards are currently acting in Fortune Theatre Studio production of "The keys are in the Margarine" which focusses on

many different peoples experiences with dementia.

Verbatim theatre is a fairly new form of theatre that none of the students have really come across before, so it was a fantastic new learning experience for all involved. Diver and Edwards took the students through a series of warm-up exercises and then some pair exercises focussing on verbatim style

performance (physical and verbal). Huge thanks to Cindy and Julie for taking the time to come into school and work with us.

Year 11 Drama at Toitu Early Settlers Museum

For the entire term, the Year 11 Drama students have been going down to Toitu every Tuesday lunchtime and period #5 (their usual drama period), to devise drama in and around in the exhibits within museum,

for their devising NCEA assessment.

It has been very interesting seeing what the three performance groups came up with. One group focussed their drama in the "Across the Ocean Waves" boat, one in the 'Early Settlers Hut', and the other in front of the glass cabinet containing items from the 1st Church. All pieces were highly original and really creative. They also dressed in period costume and used actual props from the museum exhibits. All students performed for the public on the afternoon of Wednesday 25th June and their performances were very well received. This has been one of the biggest highlights for this class so far this year. Next term they tackle the theatre

genre of Melodrama... so stay tuned!

Check out the photo from the Early Settlers Hut site performance at Toitu...A big thanks to Mrs Marks for the photos. They feature Cameron McDowel l , Ned Ennion -Dick ison, and Phi l ip Plant . Ms Fridd T.I.C Drama Dept.

STAC Football

As the boys walked across to the changing room, they knew this would be a difficult and challenging game. The ground was in very poor condition and one section of it reminded me of Tonga park number two after a storm. Anyway, the boys ‘suited up’ and prepared for, what history would have us believe, a closely contested game.

We had the best of chances in the first half placing some beautiful through balls into our strikers feet, only to be deemed offside a number of times. We had become a little frustrated with about 30 minutes gone we made a couple of mistakes which lead to STAC placing a ball in the back of the net. A call for ‘head’s up’ was given from the sideline and we headed back to halfway knowing that we should be able to get back to square. No sooner said than done, when we had a man taken down in the box, which lead to a penalty beautifully taken by Hamish Cotter. 1 all then as we headed into the break and that’s the way it stayed for the first 45.

We spoke at halftime about being patient, playing to the whistle and not getting frustrated about calls not going our way or the ball not doing what we wanted it to in the mud. We came out refreshed and worked hard on settling into a good work rate at the start of the second half, changes were made and Hanlin Johnstone, who had only just gone on, chipped a ‘World-Cup class goal’ over the keeper’s head to give us a 2-1 lead. The day was not over and we had another 25 minutes to keep the lead to make this the first win in football for about 6 years. We started to really ‘dig in’ especially in defence and what do you know, 10 minutes later we found ourselves in their box again and Daniel Gruppelaar hit a ‘net-breaking’ half volley to seal the deal… We kept out a few challenges late in the second half to come away rightful winners.

With Jeremy (the coach) out for the weekend, I was called in to give some sort of direction to a team full of quality players. They all played an outstanding game, and special mention has to go to our solid defence on a very trying pitch. Bruce James

STAC Rugby

After a long trip up to Christchurch, the McGlashan 1st XV fronted up to a STAC team that had been performing well in the Press Cup. McGlashan had some trouble early on with breakdown turnovers, but after they began to front up, they held on to most of the ball early on. Some strong carries opened up some holes in the STAC defence and Josh Timu was quick to exploit the holes, and went over for the first try of the match. McGlashan continued with their good work and after some strong forwards play, Hamish Hendry powered over the line with a pick and go. STAC stepped up their game in the second half and had most of the ball, although they struggled to penetrate the strong McGlashan defence. Late in the second half McGlashan were put under pressure and conceded a string of penalties. Liam Geddes infringed close to the line and was shown a yellow card. STAC exploited the one man advantage and scored from a set move off the scrum. The STAC try was the final play of the game. Overall the heroic defence from McGlashan and their ability to capitalise on limited opportunities won them the game. Every player in the team stepped up and performed especially Joe Mullis who made the number 8 Jersey his own, Oli Knopp who had a stand out performance at centre and Hamish Hendry who led from the front all day. Matthew Morrison

Badminton

The First Badminton Team consisting of Jayden Baker, Andrew Kim, Andrew Goh and Chris Cho had a close battle with STAC this year with every

game finishing with a very close score. The team played very well but unfortunately STAC came out on top and with a score of 4-2. STAC won the top

3 singles and the 2nd doubles while JMC won the 1st doubles and 4th singles. Although the result was a loss for JMC, it was a good effort from the

team nevertheless.

STAC Hockey Report St Andrew's always presents a formidable challenge for our 1st XI and this year was no exception. St Andrew's is currently ranked 3rd in New Zealand and always plays a controlled and structured game. McGlashan went into the match wanting to play our style of hockey and to ensure that we disrupted some of their key play makers. The first half went well for McGlashan with some good pressure put on the STAC defence. We played with intensity, took our opportunities and were leading the match 3-1 at half time. Unfortunately we were unable to maintain this pressure and St Andrew's recovered well from the initial McGlashan onslaught. A loss of structure and some well executed play from St Andrew's saw us eventually lose the match 7-3. We took some positives from this match, but also have much work to do to play at St Andrew's level consistently. We look forward to continued improvements as we approach the end of season tournament.

STAC Basketball Along with the other teams the full A basketball team bussed up to St Andrew’s on Sunday. Unlike the others we played two games one on Sunday night and the other on Monday morning.

Going into the first game we had the clear disadvantage coming off a 6 hour bus trip with little to no turn around time before our game. However the boys played well pulling out to an early lead. We then hit a mid game drought with few points late in the 2nd and early in the third to find ourselves down by 20 odd points. With some great clutch plays by Jack Ascroft down the stretch we managed to pull the game back to a three point deficit only to lose in the final seconds with RJ Sem-Cheyne missing the game tying three.

After a good nights rest we all arrived early in the St Andrews gym for game 2. This time we were missing Ben Pinfold in the second half due to soccer and Nemo Gent because of rugby. In this game the boys never truly found our footing going down early and never getting back into close contention. They made the extra passes and we found ourselves in foul trouble with big man Alex Yarnall fouled out.

With two losses it is simple to say we weren’t please with our results but there were some good aspects to take out of this. Some being effective scoring moves to add to our offence courtesy of Ryan Duff and we feel confident we know how to beat St Andrews at South Island Tournament at the end of the season. A special thanks to Adrian our coach who took the time off work to come up with us and coach our team. Ben Simmers

STAC Trapshooting

On Monday morning the Trapshooting team of Arthur Chapman-Cohen (Captain), Sam Wright, Shane Sanders, Harry Russell, Scott McKenzie and Harry Hasselman, along with coach John Fooks and manager Jenni Sanders, arrived at the Christchurch Gun Club grounds to frosty but perfect shooting conditions, with a clear sunny sky and not a breath of wind. The challenge consisted of each team member shooting a total of 50 targets for a value of 90 points over three different events. St Andrews had a very competitive team this year and our boys had to work hard to stay ahead, but pulled off the win on 416 points, 14 ahead of St Andrews. Harry Hasselman was our top shot of the day with 87/90 points, closely followed by Arthur on 85.
