St Ives High School - where choices create infinite possibilities Principal Maers by Mark Watson Happy Holiday Once again we have reached the end of another term. I cannot believe how quickly they seem to be com- ing around. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our families a happy break from school over the coming two weeks. Please note that Friday is a School Development Day, which means it is a staff on- ly day, students do not attend. This day is the postponed School Development Day from the first day of this term. All students will return to school for Term 3 on Tuesday 19 July. Monday 18 July will be the School Development Day for Term 3. Students do not attend on Monday 18 July. Voting The school hall will be used as a polling booth for the Federal election this Saturday. This is a wonderful opportunity for the school and the P&C to raise funds. Voters will be able to purchase coffee and a buy food from the barbecue. A cake stall and bookstall will be operating. Items made by students in their Technology classes will also be on sale. Also on sale will be tickets in the Gold Raffle with prizes being an 1882 British Gold Sovereign valued at over $350, Gold Class Movie tickets and Gold Medal Winning Wines (see page 3). So make sure you come to the school to vote and purchase something from one of the stalls. Encourage everyone in your street to vote at the school and, most importantly, purchase something! School Development Day As mentioned, Friday this week will be a pupil free day. The day will focus on wellbeing, stress management and mind- fulness. Staff will also take part in ICT workshops to support BYOD, subject specific activities and technology training. Monday 18 July will also be a School Development Day. On this day, staff from Killara, Turramurra, Ku-ring-gai and Chatswood high schools will combine with our staff and participate in master classes on a range of topics. This year, the venue for this day will be Killara High School. Stage 6 Study Skills Seminar Last Friday morning, a study skills seminar was conducted for students in Year 11 and Year 12. The seminar was held before school in the Library. It was presented by Mr O’Brian a former practicum student at the school this term. Thanks to Mr Lawler for organising this event. Bronze Duke of Edinburgh The sudden cold snap did not stop our Bronze Duke of Edinburgh students from setting out on their adventurous jour- ney on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Students completed a section of the Great North Walk. They camped out overnight and really enjoying the fire on Tuesday night to keep themselves warm. Thanks to Ms Paterson for organising the walk and to Mr Hepburn for assisting her. Visit by Dr Daryl Le Cornu, a Former Student It was a great delight to welcome back to the school, Dr Daryl Le Cornu, a member of the class that graduated from St Ives High School in 1972. Dr Le Cornu is now a lecturer at the Australian Catholic University, a board member of ICAN (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear weapons) and the Co-Vice President of the NSW Division of the United Nations Association of Australia. He spoke to students studying Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies about the threat from nuclear weapons, which is relevant to the topic on world order in the syllabus. Thanks go to Mr Noronha for organising this enrichment activity.

Reports Update Reports for Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 are currently being finalised and will be emailed home before the end of this week. If you did not receive your report in the mail, please contact the school at the start of next term to arrange for a replace-ment report. Thanks to Mr O’Connell for all of his efforts coordinating the task of emailing reports home. Student Symposium A student symposium was held at Killara High School on Thursday afternoon this week. The aim of the symposium was to encourage student debate and creativity and to build collaboration with students from other schools. Students from our school joined with students from other NS5 schools to share innovation and inspire ideas with other teachers within the NS5. Thanks go to Pat Gettens for all of her efforts to make the event a success. Leave During Term Time Teachers are increasingly finding it difficult to get through an entire teaching program within the allotted time. This is due to a number of issues including the amount of content covered in syllabuses and the number of days lost to teaching due to variations to routine and student absences. Families should avoid holidays during term time. If a student cannot sit an assessment because they are on leave participating in a holiday, it is likely they will be awarded zero marks for the assessment task. Congratulations This week congratulations to: The Year 9 Debating team who have had a number of recent successes in the Premier’s Debating Challenge. See

the report in this newsletter for details. The under 15 (Junior) Boys Basket Ball team who have progressed to the third round of knock out competition after

defeating Epping Boys’ High School 34 to 38 this week. Erik F (Year 9), Kirsty F(Year 7), Joshua D (Year 10) and Jamie E (Year 12) who have been selected to represent

North Sydney at the State Cross Country carnival next term. All four qualified for the State carnival based on their placing at the recent Regional Cross Country carnival.

Best wishes Mark Watson Principal

YEAR 7 GATS ART EXCURSION On a windy and cold Friday students in 7VA1 and 2 headed into the city on an art excursion. We started on the Goods line in Ultimo, sitting in the sun and learning about the UTS Frank Gehry building, which has been described as a crumpled brown paper bag. Walking through to Broadway we had lunch and saw the Central Park One tower with its heliostat and walls of greenery, which has won many design and sustainability awards. Our final destination was the White Rabbit Gallery, where contemporary Chinese art is shown, the current show called Heavy Artillery included a leather tank, with links to Tiananmen Square and a suit of armour made of knitted paper from pages of banned textbooks. The excellent guides loved our Year 7 students saying they were the "most engaged, perceptive students" they had had at the gallery. Well done girls and boys!

YEAR 9 DEBATING

Last Friday, the Year 9 Debating team had another victory in the Premier's Debating Challenge. The debate was against Kellyville High School and the topic was "That voting should not be compulsory". We were the negative team and won the debate on points centered around the needs of the key stakeholders in elections; voter choice; and overall, the power of young people using their electoral rights as 'architects of their future'. Previously, we won a debate against Epping Boys’ High on the topic that "Contact Sports should be banned for young people". Again, we successfully argued the negative case. Congratulations to Daniel P, Georgia B, Katie F and Kate T on a job well done. Jennifer Jaeger Debating Coordinator

YEAR 8 WOODWORK Throughout term two, Year 8 have designed and created clocks in the woodwork unit as part of the technology course. Students were given freedom on their choice of design for their projects, with each student incorporating their artistic skills into their designs. I am very proud of their efforts and each are to be congratulated on their work. These are the completed designs of 8TTE-1 and 8TTE-8. Adrian Zaboklicki TAS teacher
