I have been very impressed by the quality of learning that is taking place in our classes. Keep up the great work. Thank you to our Mums who joined us for our Mothers’ Day High Tea. It was pleasing to see them sharing morning tea with our school community and enjoying the student performances and the student displays. Thank you to Mrs Bayfield, and the wonderful staff and students from The Entrance Campus for all of the hard work in organising such a wonderful event. Congratulations to our athletes who performed with determination and passion at our cross country carnival at Long Jetty foreshore. It is terrific to see all our students performing to the best of their ability regardless of their final place, and thank you to Ms Andrews for organising an outstanding event. Good luck also to our athletes representing the school at the Tuggerah Lakes Zone carnival on Thursday. Good luck to our stage 2 students who are currently having an amazing time on camp. I am sure they will share all of their wonderful memories when they return home on Friday afternoon. Thank you to Mrs Bayfield for organising our camp and thank you all the Stage 2 teachers for giving up their family time to support our students for 3 days on camp. A reminder, if you have any concerns or issues involving your children or students from the school, please call the office to set up a meeting with the school. The class teacher should be the first point of contact then the stage Assistant Principal. It is NOT appropriate for adults to approach other students to deal with any issues. Failure to follow this process may result in an Inclosed Lands Act being issued which prevents access to the school. Mental maths strategies We teach children a range of different strategies to add and subtract numbers. By showing them several methods for solving maths questions, we’re helping them to look for patterns. All this builds a good sense of “number” which means they understand the relationships between different numbers and why different ways to add and subtract work well. The goal is that your child will understand many ways to approach a maths problem and will be able to choose a way

that makes the most sense to them. School A to Z has a lot of resources, including help sheets on mental maths strategies, here: www.bit.ly/JkiUsY Does speaking another language at home confuse children? Are your children fortunate enough to be growing up in a home where two or more languages are spoken? Many parents worry that bilingualism can cause confusion and even delays in learning for their children, but according the Raising Children Network, that’s not the case at all. A good knowledge of your native language can actually help your child with learning English. Bilingual children who are read books and spoken to in their in their native language find it easier to learn to read and write in English when they get to school. More information is at www.bit.ly/1m0agnk Have a great week Mark Rudd Principal DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Another busy fortnight has sped by with lots happening at TEPS. A big congratulations to the Year 3 and 5 students who completed four NAPLAN assessments last week. You were all so mature and calm. The results of these tests should arrive at school near the end of Term 3. While NAPLAN gives us a snapshot of how each child and school in Australia is performing in specific areas of literacy and numeracy, it is important to note that they do not assess all of what makes our children exceptional and unique. The people who create and score these tests don’t know that some of our students love to sing, are good at drawing or can teach others how to use a computer program. They have not seen the way that some of our students have friends that count on them to be there when they are sad. And they don’t show how wonderfully kind and accepting of others our kids are. So when NAPLAN results do arrive, please remember that there is no single way to ‘test’ all of the wonderful things that make our children who they are. I hope all our beautiful TEPS mums had a wonderful day. I saw some of the great gifts the students bought. Many thanks to wonderful Ms Bayfield and her many helpers for her organisation of the stall and incredible High Tea!

I have seen a few 4A students last week with some incredible descriptive writing. Fantastic work TJ, Aaliyah, Bobby, Callum and Shyla. Callum’s writing is below:

THE JUNGLE by Callum 4A

The jungle was very peaceful. It was very light.

It smelled of flowers and it smelled of moss. It smelled like a beautiful waterfall

And the wonderful breath of little birds. It often had a sort of peaceful small

As though nothing bad could ever happen again. It smelled of mist

And of stick insect’s breath And cold, misty air.

And whenever something breathed, You could see it.

But mostly it smelled of flowers For there was always flowers.

Flowers here, flowers there And they looked beautiful.

Nicole Heazlewood Deputy Principal Mother's Day High Tea Thank you to all our Mum's who were able to come and enjoy our first Mother's Day High Tea. Hope all our Mothers and Grandmothers had a wonderful Mother’s Day and shared some special time with your families. Week 4 and Stage 2 Camp is finally here. The children are really enjoying the variety of challenging experiences and participating well in the many team building activities. The way our

students encourage each other is truly admirable. If you need to get an important message to your child whilst on camp, you can call the school office and they will forward your requests to our Stage 2 teachers at camp. Be sure to check out our next newsletter which will include photos and fond memories of our many camp experiences. Those students not attending camp are expected to attend school as usual for these three days. New Enrolments A big TEPS welcome to our new students, Jack, Angela, Mason (4H), James (4B), Lucas, Cohen (3K), Zeke (3W) and their families who have joined our Stage 2 Team this term. We are pleased to have you on our team, all students have settled in well and we are sure you will enjoy the variety of quality learning experiences provided for our students here at TEPS. Sports in Schools continues each Monday for Stage 2. Those students who have not paid to participate will do an alternate physical activity in the hall during this time. NAPLAN A huge congratulations to our Year 3 students for the hard work and effort they put into these tests last week. Everyone gave it their absolute best and we were very proud of the enthusiasm and maturity displayed throughout the three days of assessments. Well done Year 3! Results for these assessments are sent out to all schools mid-September. ATTENDANCE A reminder that if your child is absent from school, you can ring through the reason for absence to our office, or send an absentee note with your child the next day they return to school. If your child is absent, sick for three consecutive days, a doctor’s certificate is required. Remember, if you are planning a holiday during the school term a request for exemption is required from the Principal, four weeks prior to departure. STAGE 3 NEWS Hey Team, Congratulations to all Year 5 students who sat their NAPLAN assessments last week. NAPLAN is a series of national tests that are designed to give schools, teachers, parents and caregivers a glimpse into a child’s learning at a specific point in time.

Student equipment It is essential that ALL STUDENTS come prepared to learn every day they attend school. Currently we are finding that many of our Stage 3 students are coming to school without the proper equipment and expecting someone else to provide it. It is essential that each Stage 3 student come to school each day with the following list of equipment: • 5 blue pens • 5 red pens • 5 lead pencils • 1 ruler • 1 sharpener • 1 eraser • 1 pack of highlighters • 5 packs of yellow post it notes • 1 USB • 1 pack of coloured pencils • 1 pack of textas • 1 Sharpie • 3 packets of post it notes Students being organised and responsible for their tools of learning, will help them be adequately prepared for high school as it approaches. Home Reading Home reading is one of the most important things any student can do to improve their learning. By Stage 3 students should be reading for enjoyment and reading for a sustained twenty minutes at a time or longer. The school library is packed full of great books catering for all interests, encourage your child to read today! Stage 3 Reading Logs are found at the back of each student’s diary. This is where home reading is recorded each night. CAPA Electives This term students in Stage 3 will be electing to participate in a creative arts elective that will help develop and foster their creativity. The electives students can choose from are; Clay Sculpting, Anime Drawing, Photography, Stop Go Motion and Mixed Material Art. There may be a small cost to some of the electives and all electives will run on Thursday afternoons in the last session. Mrs Duncan will be leading this initiative. Enrichment Program Letters of acceptance have been given out to parents and caregivers regarding student registration into the 2017 TLLC Enrichment program for Year 5 and 6 students. There still may be some places available. If you can return your registration note we will forward it onto the organiser ASAP. Russell Stefans Assistant Principal - Stage 3 [email protected]

Valuables (toys) should not be brought to school. Students have access to sport equipment and play gym sets for use during their breaks. We currently have close to 600 students in the school and ensuring toys are not damaged or lost is impossible. Apart from balls we ask that you keep these precious belongings at home.
