Congratulations to the senior TheatreSports team who beat a range of other schools on Monday night to progress to the finals. Again like last year, Ashfield Boys is the only comprehensive public school to progress to the finals. The junior team will perform tonight and we are hosting the competition in the hall. If you would like to attend the performance is always a huge amount of fun. Thanks Ms Whitting and Ms Small who devote a huge amount of time and energy to the TheatreSports teams.

Ashfield Boys High School students sat the ICAS Digital
Technologies competition on Tuesday, 23rd May 2017.
The Mathematics/Computing faculty look forward to
viewing their results, as when Ms Thomas looked at the
Year 7 paper she wondered how much students knew
about a database.

SENIOR THEATRESPORTS TEAM ROCKETS INTO SEMI FINAL
The first heat of the Senior TheatreSports Challenge was held at Casimir College on Monday evening 22nd May. The ABHS team, comprising Galen Banfield, Vincent Li, Edwin French Jen-kins, Wesley Tebbens and captained by George Brooks competed against eight other teams. The boys were placed in the top for and have secured a place in the semi-finals. Thanks to Ms Whitting for her continued support and encouragement and congratulations to the team. Break a leg in the next round. The first round of the Intermediate TheatreSports Challenge will be held in the hall at ABHS on Friday 25th May at 7pm. Come along and support the team. Cheers from the home crowd will certainly spur the boys on.

DRAMA STUDENTS EXCURSION
Year 9 and 10 Drama students attended a performance of Canterbury Girls High School’s Musical; “Lil’ Miss Adventure”. Set in a contemporary girl’s high school, the plot is reminiscent of Picnic at Hanging Rock meets Mean Girls. Our students commented on the wide range of characters, the vocal qualities of the students, the transitions between scenes and the polish of the overall performance. It was a great opportunity to view a live performance and to continue the relationship between the two schools.

YEAR 8 STEM – ROLLERCOASTERS
Our STEM teams have just completed their fourth
session and are currently involved in building their
‘final’ rollercoaster that meets the requirements of
the design brief.
The teams are very competitive and there has been
lots of building, testing and rebuilding to ensure their
design works! Each student in a STEM team has a role
and our 3D printing managers have been busy de-
signing and now 3D printing their start gates. Once
these are complete they can be tested and some
teams may need to ‘rethink’ their start gate design.
Our next STEM day is on Monday, teams will be
finishing off their rollercoasters, completing their
theme and creating a short documentary of their
work.

POWERHOUSE EXCURSION
Year 7 went to the Powerhouse Museum on Thursday 27th April for our History excursion. We
got to Central by train and walked from the train station to the Museum. First we played a bit at
the playground and then we went inside to see the mummies. We saw six mummies and we had
to write about their life and how technology was used to investigate their lives. After lunch, we
saw the rest of the museum. Then we walked back to the train station and caught the train back
to school.

LEARNING HOW TO NAVIGATE THE GLOBAL
HSC ENGLISH EXTENSION 1 STUDY DAY
On Sunday our Year 12 English Extension1 students attended an English Teachers Association study day at Newington College on their module Texts and Ways of Thinking and the elective, Navigating the Global. The boys learnt how to approach each section of the exam and heard from some of the best students from the HSC 2016. They were put through their paces and tested to think about how to create and construct an imaginative piece of writing which captures the challenges of our times whilst incorporating ideas and characters from the texts they have studied. They enjoyed the day and know that their hard work and their approach will enable their success at the HSC!

55TH ANNUAL ATHLETICS CARNIVAL
It was a great carnival marked with an outstanding Alec Campbell Gift. The fifteenth running of the handicap race marked the first time that two brothers competed against one another. Rhey Bugarin (17 years of age) off a handicap of 10 metres went head to head with younger brother Rhodes (7 metres). The crack field produced one of the fastest races in recent memory with age and experience proving to be a huge advantage. The U18's representative AJ Kahraman off a handicap of 13 metres stormed down the outside in lane 8 to claim victory in a fitting end to a stellar career representing ABHS in athletics. Well done to all competitors with final scores of the carnival, age champions and zone representatives to be announced next week.
