If your child loses or misplaces their Opal card, you need to apply for a new one via the Opal webs ite and print out your receipt number. Put the receipt in a ziplock bag to keep it safe and dry, and give to your child to take on the bus until their new Opal card arrives at your house (about 2 weeks from applying).

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Week 6 already and as always it is very busy at The Entrance Public School. Well done to all our athletes at this weeks’ athletics carnival, our first K-6 carnival. The level of sportsmanship, determination and participation was outstanding. Congratulations to Mr Littlewood and the staff for a very well organised carnival and thank you to the parents who helped cheer for the competitors and our wonderful P&C volunteers for a great BBQ. Congratulations to Ms Ambrose and our netball teams who performed with skill, determination and passion at the netball gala day last week and thank you to the parents who assisted with transport. Congratulations to our students who represented the school at the Malinga Art Awards, our school won first prize in the Art Awards. Well done to Ms Saunders and Ms Barsby for all your hard work in organising our entry and the leadership you provide to our school. A reminder that if you have a concern regarding a conflict or have a concern with another student and your child that it is NOT appropriate to approach the child, all concerns must be raised with a staff member, Assistant Principal, Deputy Principal or the Principal. Failure to follow the correct way of dealing with these issues may result in the Police enforcing the Inclosed Lands Act which then prevents access to the school. Too sick for school? As the cold weather hits, so do the winter bugs. It’s often hard to know whether to send your child to school or let them stay home to recover, especially when that means an adult cancelling work. For safety's sake, if your child seems unwell you should always keep them home from school and seek medical advice. School A to Z and the NSW Health have created an at-a-glance chart to help answer your questions about common childhood illness and how long sick kids need to miss school.

Find it by typing this link into your web browser www.bit.ly/1hytn2E Mental maths strategies: We teach children a range of different strategies to add and subtract numbers. By showing them several methods for solving maths questions, we’re helping them to look for patterns. All this builds a good sense of “number” which means they understand the relationships between different numbers and why different ways to add and subtract work well. The goal is that your child will understand many ways to approach a maths problem and will be able to choose a way that makes the most sens e to them. School A to Z has a lot of resources, including help sheets on mental maths strategies, here : www.bit.ly/JkiUsY Does speaking another language at home confuse children? Are your children fortunate enough to be growing up in a home where two or more languages are spoken? Many parents worry that bilingualism can cause confusion and even delays in learning for their children, but according to the Raising Children Network, that’s not the case at all. A good knowledge of your native language can actually help your child with learning English. Bilingual children who are read books and spoken to in their native language find it easier to learn to read and write in English when they get to school. More information is at www.bit.ly/1m0agnk

Have a great fortnight.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Big congratulations to our amazing Girls Soccer Team! Mr Littlewood and I were lucky enough to watch them play last fortnight. The girls worked as a team, remained positive, displayed great skills and positive sportsmanship. A well -deserved 6-0 win. Well done to Shayla and Jaz for scoring a goal each and to Chelcee who scored 4 goals! Another highlight for me was having a delicious lunch prepared by K-6B. I loved the ‘Cous cous and vegetable salad’ – delicious and healthy. You are all so clever. Last Friday, Mrs Saunders, Mrs Barsby and our Aboriginal Leaders went to the Maliga Art and Culture Showcase. The showcase is an exhibition of visual stories regarding cultural identity and connection to place through the visual, performance and literary arts by local Indigenous young people. And guess what?? Our art piece WON! We are so proud of our K-6 ATSI students who created this amazing art piece. The Showcase is open until June 4

th and it is free. Go

and have a look if you have time! The Art House, ANZAC Rd Wyong. Did you know that our wonderful teachers spend hours and hours over many, many weeks writing student reports? I want to acknowledge our dedicated teaching staff for the time they are taking to analyse assessment data and individually writing each and every report comment. It is a massive job – thank you. It is always fantastic to walk into a classroom who are using technology to support their learning. Pictured here are some of the 6S boys engaging our Chromebooks.

K-6 B NEWS Firstly, a huge congratulations to all our students for their participation in the Athletics Carnival. It was so wonderful to see everyone trying their best and having

fun. Last week I was fortunate to be able to attend a Sue Larkey Workshop, which addressed strategies to support the inclusion of Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. In addition to plenty of useful ideas and strategies, Sue’s overriding message was that no two children are alike. Each has different needs, talents and interests. Our challenge as teachers, parents and carers is to give each child what they need to achieve the best possible outcomes in life.

Sue Larkey’s website offers some fantastic tip sheets, which are helpful for children with a range of disabilities. You can also subscribe to receive her regular newsletter via email and/or follow her page on Facebook. What an action packed fortnight Stage 2 has had! Camp was an amazing experience and a wonderful opportunity for us teachers to see an important side of the children that we don’t often get the chance to see in the classroom. The children really enjoyed spending some special time with their teachers as well, watching us face our fears and be

part of the activities just like them!

Mini Camp Assembly Monday the 19

th June, Week 9, we are holding a special

Stage 2 Assembly, after lunch at 2.00pm in the hall. We would like to invite all parents, carers and family members of Stage 2 students to come along and share in our memorable moments from camp. Some students will share their written recounts and we will watch a slide show presentation of all our wonderful experiences at camp. We really hope you can make it.

For the Love of Reading A massive thank you goes out to The Entrance Lions Club for their kind donation to Stage 2 that has enabled the purchase of quality reading texts by renowned authors for every student in Year 3 and 4 this term. These books will assist in nurturing the love of reading amongst our children and support regular reading practises at home. The children were presented with their chosen books and personal book bags this morning by Mr Bob Dunne from the Lions Club. There sure were many happy smiling faces amongst Stage 2 today. Thank you again to The Entrance Lions Club and all you have done for our students at The Entrance Public School over many years, we are so lucky to have people like you in our community! Special mention also for Mrs Bayfield who organised this opportunity for our children!

Athletics Carnival Well done to all our students who put in their personal best at our Athletics Carnival on Monday and encouraged each other along. Thank you to all those parents who came along and joined in the fun and cheered us all along! Place getter ribbons will be presented at the next whole school assembly!

Rugby Skills Sessions Year 3 completed their 5 weeks skills sessions with the Waratah’s Junior Development team last Friday and Year 4 classes will commence their sessions this week. Student Reports Stage 3 student reports are currently being written by class teachers. Reports will be sent home on the Monday of Week 10. These reports provide a snapshot of how each student is progressing in their learning, and also indicates to parents and caregivers how students are progressing in their personal and social development. If, at any stage, you have a question or concern regarding your child’s learning, do not hesitate to make an appointment at the front office to meet with your child’s teacher. Stage 3 Public Speaking In the next week, Stage 3 students will receive a homework task which involves them writing a speech to present to their class towards the end of the term. In Week 9 of this term, students will present their speech to their class and two nominated students from each class will proceed to the final stage of public speaking, competing against students from other classes on Stage 3. In Week 2, Term 3, Stage Semi-finals will be held and a winner will be judged. Keep an eye out for the At Home Task Sheet, which will be sent home this week. Tumbi Tasters - Coming Soon!!!! The program will commence in Week 2 of Term 3. Parents and caregivers are responsible for transporting s tudents to and from these days.
