PRINCIPAL’S REPORT It was wonderful to see so many of the boys from Years 7 and 8 attend last night’s Annual disco with Burwood
Girls High School. It looked like everyone had a great time as well as helping to raise money for a worthy
cause.
Congratulations to the Senior debating team who are now Zone Champions in two different debating
competitions after defeating Sydney Secondary College Black Wattle Bay yesterday.
A reminder to parents with sons in Years 9 and 10 about the Parent and Teacher Evening next Tuesday.
Information about online booking is included again in this issue of Ashtag. If you are able to attend it is always
of benefit to your son’s success when parents and teachers work together. I hope to see you there.

DEBATING NEWS
Sladjana Zubac English Faculty
The Year 7 and 8 Debating
teams travelled to Burwood
Girls High School on 27th
May to compete in the first
round of the Premier’s
Debating Challenge. The
theme for this round of
debating was education.
The boys were presented
with three very challenging
topics. Both teams chose
the topic ‘That self-defence
lessons should be made compulsory for all students’. The boys worked well collaboratively to
argue their points.
The Year 7 debaters for this debate were Hannan Mohammed, Wesley Stewart, Eric Kim and
Ittehad Ahmed. The boys were affirmative for this debate. This was the first time the Year 7
students participated in a public debate. The boys spoke clearly and articulated their arguments
well. They discussed the physical and health benefits of self-defence lessons. The adjudicator was
impressed with the arguments and with the confidence they were delivered with. Unfortunately,
the boys were not successful in winning the debate.
The Year 8 team chose the
same topic. The Year 8
debaters for this round were
Wali Mohammed, Fahim
Mustafa, Sahnoun Skendri
and Adam Shah. The boys
were focused and presented
their points well. All the
speakers received positive
feedback from the
adjudicator. The boys were
narrowly defeated by
Burwood Girls High School.
The debating teams are looking forward to debating Burwood Girls High School again at the end
of the term for the second round of the Premier’s Debating Challenge.

MAGIC SQUARES
7 Hawking put their addition, subtraction and problem solving ability into practice by completing Magic Squares. Magic Squares are puzzles that use your addition and subtraction ability. The total of the sum of the numbers in a line of a Magic Square must all be the same, there are 8 lines in all, 3 horizontal, 3 vertical and 2 diagonal. To solve Magic Squares:
One line of numbers will be complete, add the numbers along this line and write the total in the magic number box, called the ‘Magic Number’.
Use this number with one of the other numbers to form another line. Add the two numbers, then subtract the total from the Magic Number. Write the answer in the square that completes the line, then move to the next line.
Continue this process until all the squares are filled.

STRUCTURE OF THE MAMMALIAN EYE
This week the Year 11 Biology class examined the structure of the sheep's eye by dissecting and
discovering the components of an eye. Everyone participated in this unnerving experiment, but
came away with a thorough understanding of the complexities and fragility of the complex organ.
Some students said the stare they received prior to dissecting, has haunted them for a few days
as they learn how delicate yet tough the exterior of the eye is, through learning about cataracts
and technologies and procedures necessary in removing the clouded lens.
"The experience was quite rewarding", was a comment made by many of the students. From the
images it is evident that the students were having a great experience.
Your eyes are delicate sensory organs, protected by surrounding fatty tissue and bone. The lens
was carefully removed to test its magnifying power- seen in the image.

SENIOR DEBATING TEAM
Kamal Mahmud TAS Teacher
The Senior Debating Team competed in Round 3 of the Premier's Debating Challenge Year 11 Metro Competition for the Karl Cramp Trophy on Thursday June 9 against Sydney Secondary College Blackwattle Bay. The debate was "That team sports should be compulsory for school-aged children". Ashfield Boys High School was the affirmative side in the debate and presented a concise and structured team argument with effective rebuttal that won them the debate. This win makes the Ashfield Boys High School Senior Debating Team the Zone 1 Champions in this competition. The team was also Zone 1 Champions in the Premier's Senior Debating Hume Barbour Competition earlier this term. It is the first time in the school's history that Ashfield Boys High School has been Zone Champions in both competitions during the same year. This is therefore an outstanding achievement for the boys and the school congratulates them on their efforts. The Senior Debating Team now has to compete in the regional finals next term. The school wishes them the best of luck for this next challenge. The Ashfield Boys High School Year 11 Senior Debating Team are:

STICK - IN SCIENCE
Our most recent measurements of Professor Bubanies reveal that she has put on weight…. A
whole 0.332 grams!
We have encountered some difficulty in measuring the Professor’s body length, as she tends to
arch her tail when she is moved. As careful as we could be this week, our measurements of her
body length showed no progress from last week.

Article Goliath Phasmid by: The bing lee and Aaron (Charlie Nguyen, Alex Kim, Ethan Krumins and Aaron Casey)
So it is Week Seven and the phasmid’s body length is 115 millimetres and its weight is 0.904 grams which is less than one gram! This is a 58% increase in growth in just 7 days.
The Goliath Phasmid commonly lives in eucalyptus trees and can live in gardens. They can be very hard to find because they look like sticks and they can blend in with the environment that they are in, which is called ‘camouflage’. They even reproduce without mating! They also don't live in the state of Victoria.
This week we will hear from 3 of the class groups, on what their roles are and what they have
discovered so far …
7
Species Experts (Xiao Wu, Jevons Chen and Ricky Chen)
The Goliath phasmid is the second largest stick insect in Australia. The first instar (a stage of development) of a nymph (young stick insect) is small, brown, and ant-like, without wings. The adult insects however, are green and yellow (though colours can slightly vary), are very large, and have wings. While both sexes have wings, only the lighter male is able to fly. As our Goliath phasmid doesn’t yet have wings…it is possible that ’she’ is actually a ‘he’. We are yet to find out.
The Fact Checkers (Wazza Tariq, Soroush Haddad and Kadecz Tatuava)
Soroush, Kadecz and I (Wazza) are the fact checkers and our job is to check our classmates’ facts about our class pet, the phasmid named “Professor Bubanies” and see if their facts are true or not. When we get all the information from our peers, we are to construct a bibliography to make sure they have the correct information from the websites they have been using.
‘FAMILY MATTERS’ AT CANTERBURY
Year 9 and 10 Elective Drama students
were the special guests at the matinee
on Thursday 26th May of ‘Family
Matters’; group devised performance
pieces from the junior and senior
company members at Canterbury Girls
High School. The projects from both
companies took inspiration from their
own family relationships and a sitcom
from the 80’s to formulate their own
perceptions of what matters to families.
It was a great opportunity for our
students to share this experience with
the girls from Canterbury and to forge
relationships that may foster more
dramatic opportunities.

YEAR 7 BOORI MONTY PRYOR PERFORMANCE
Sladjana Zubac English Faculty
On Monday 6th June Year 7
students attended a
performance by Boori Monty
Pryor. Boori is a storyteller,
published writer and
performer. Year 7 students
listened intently to the stories
that Boori told them.
Throughout the presentation
the students laughed at the
funny stories Boori told them
about his childhood. The
students asked questions and
learnt a lot about growing up
in the bush and Indigenous culture. Students were given the opportunity to learn about the Yigi
Yigi or Didgeridoo. It was an enjoyable afternoon for both students and teachers. Monty spoke
about his change of perspective as a child in regards to education, especially the importance of
education. This performance was part of our study of perspective for the unit Through My Eyes.
