The past week has been extremely busy and exciting. The visit from Lindfield East was all we hoped to be. Over the next week or so we will broadcast a spe-cial recoding made by our students and those of Lindfield East. It is very special. I must thank Danielle for facilitating it and doing the en-gineering on it to make it a top re-cording. Thanks go to all staff with all but one or two exceptions for their work to make the visit a success. This ranged from being up early to make sure breakfasts were ready, cooking evening meals and super-vising games and other activities. One staff member drove students to Broken Hill and Silverton and even had to change a tyre., for which I am in their debt. It will count because Lindfield will recip-rocate later in November when we will reward our students with a re-turn visit. Behaviour and service to the school will determine who goes. Anybody who went last year will get the opportunity to go again. To parents and the community I thank them for their support and attendance at the evening of their performance on Tuesday night. I can never remember a happier oc-casion with top performance from both schools. If you were there you would have seen that our school is working on level terms and that our students appreciated the opportu-

nity to see a top performance from Lindfield East. Thanks to parents and community for showing our visitors what a night around a camp fire can mean. The opportunity to eat Kangaroo and to enjoy a Johnny cake was special. Thank you. NAIDOC WEEK is just about over. We have a special NAIDOC Week assembly commencing at 12 on Friday and we invite everybody to come along and enjoy the day. Last term we finished with Har-mony Day. Friday will have the same theme but with one differ-ence, we will emphasise taking the next step. Many of us will have been inspired by Isobel’s story. How could we be anything else? Please take your next step with us and come and join us in the final celebration for NAIDOC Week. To William Mafi, whose idea was transposed to stage in “Weeping Cloud”, to the cast of the show and everybody associated with it, goes my gratitude. It will be re-membered as a watershed mo-ment in Menindee’s history. Congratulations to the winners of the NAIDOC Awards:

Working Bee

To add to the chickens in the Ag plot, I have kindly been of-fered a donation of some lambs and kid goats. For these babies to move in I will need some help in setting some yards and fences. I would like to run a working bee week 6 weekend Sunday, 28th August next term. There will be a sausage sizzle for your help, if you are interested in helping out, please contact Jessica Tate at the school.

Congratulations year 5 who last week had 100% attendance! Year 3 also did well with 96% attendance. Year 8 had the best attendance in secondary, however, attendance in secondary was fairly disappointing for the week with year 12 having particularly poor atten-dance. Remember it is important that students are at school on time every day!

Congratulations to Daniel Fusi, Fiona Kelly and Shelley Shoemark for being in the top four Aboriginal staff who were nominated. Similarly congratulations to Harley Williams and Marley Darrigo. Congratulations to the the other three non-Aboriginal staff members who reached the top : Adam Bailey, Jane Dunbar and Tim Harris. Next time!

I must also thank the ABC TV of their 7.30 Report last Friday night and ABC Broken Hill for their continuous support through the year.

Lastly I wish all students a safe and happy holiday and the staff a good rest and thank them for their efforts over the past term. Pictures of winners on page 8.

Year 5/6 students have also been working on individual research projects which will be broadcasting over the holidays. From The Music Room Between the talent development camp, the staging of “Weeping Clouds”, and regular rehearsals, this term has seen many of our students begin to ‘test the waters’ as performers. And the results are both exciting and filled with potential! As some of our senior high school classmates continue to rehearse on Thursdays at lunchtime in rock ensemble, and our primary classmates continue their outstanding commitment to attending rehearsals on Tuesdays at lunchtime, it will only be a matter of time before more and more confident and professional performances emerge. Also this term Year 7 have been composing a Rap song and are now preparing to lay down a backing track for this. And the Year 12 class are compiling a CD of their own film music tracks. Stay tuned into the radio to hear more about these projects. See you all next term.

Canberra Excursion Expressions of Interest.

Year 10 and 11 students from Wilcannia, Ivanhoe and Menindee Central Schools are invited to attend an

excursion to Canberra between November 14th and November 18th 2011. This may include some travel

on the weekend(s) either side. This excursion is part of the Wilvandee Access Program.

The cost of the excursion is $150 which will cover part of the accommodation, food, event entry and bus

running costs. Additional student costs will include meals on the bus trip to and from Canberra and din‐

ner on one night. The Wilvandee Access Program will cover the remainder of the expenses.

Students have been given an expression of interest form which includes the 2009 Itinerary. Students can

expect a similar program this year. More details will be provided once student numbers are determined.

Please make sure your child returns the completed expression of interest along with payment of $50 by

Thursday, 28th July. The remaining $100 is due September 23rd. Please see your local school principal for

financial assistance if necessary. A formal permission note will go out at a later date.

Menindee Parents & Citizens Association 2011 Trivia/Karaoke Night

Last Saturday night the Menindee P&C held the Trivia/Karaoke night at the Albemarle Hotel, which was once again well-attended with enthusi-astic trivia buffs and home-grown singing talents. The evening began with a barbeque, providing sausage or steak sandwiches for a quick meal. The trivia kicked off at 7 pm, providing some laughter and entertainment as folk were finally able to show their talent and knowledge of a range of trivial titbits of information. All teams must be congratulated on their great participation and en-thusiasm. Following the trivia, local talent came out of the woodwork for the Karaoke, which was hosted beautifully by William and Edward. Special guest Steven Albert from Broome blew us away with his rendition of Frank Sinatra’s ‘My Way’. Locals and visitors alike had a go at singing and/or encourag-ing others in their efforts – at times even paying for someone to stop singing! Judges picks for the night were for Steven Albert in first place, fol-lowed closely by our very own local talent, Car-mel, in second place. P&C would like to thank everyone who supported this fundraising event, in particular the Albemarle Hotel for the use of facilities on the night. We also thank Kerryn Harland for help with organising and running the trivia, William and Edward for the great job hosting the karaoke, and Menindee Central School for allowing us the use of the pro-jector, screen and sound equipment. Cheryl has demonstrated an ability to adapt to changes and changing educational needs. She shows pride in herself taking a positive leadership role within the school and community.

Cheryl is appreciated for all she does behind the scenes; she can’t do enough for the school children going above and beyond her duties. All appreciate her great sense of humour her cheeky na-ture and ability to make people laugh.

Cheryl is a caring, wonderful woman and a great role model.

Michael has come so far and shows great courage to have returned to school where he is respectful to teachers and trying very hard.

He demonstrates a good work ethic, is willing to learn has a posi-

tive attitude and good attendance. He is very approachable and kind.

Michael is developing responsibility and becoming engaged in his work.

He is producing excellent work in art and music.

Vikka has a wonderful attitude and is always friendly helpful and polite.

She has a positive focus showing willingness to learn especially in her traineeship where she is doing a great job.

Vikka has shown great improvement in skills and knowledge. She is

caring and good to teachers and kids alike. Vikka does her best at all times.

Daryl Interacts well with staff, students and community going above and beyond his duties.

Daryl is supportive outside school to the Aboriginal community and has a belief in kids and community. He is involved with kid’s weekend sport and is always super friendly.

Daryl is kind, approachable, understanding and always there to help you. He is always willing to help with Aboriginal staff and did great work with Sorry Day.

Portrait of a Stranger: Broken Hill July 8 - August 19 2011 A video installation of portraits from people Broken Hill and around Australia will screen in the Gallery, complimenting the Outback Open Art Prize. The portraits, accompanied by short stories about the people in them were contributed to ABC Open's national digital photography project, Portrait of a Stranger. The challenge for photographers was to approach a stranger and ask their permission to take their photo and upload it to the web. Over 800 stunning portraits were contributed to Portrait of a Stanger between January and June 2011. Local artist and photographer Glen Ravo contributed over 20 stunning images to Portrait of a Stranger, including this photo of owner and founder of the Silverton Mad Max Museum, Adrian Bennett. (link to Adrian Bennett http://www.flickr.com/photos/60940256@N04/5709018541/in/photostream) Adrian moved to Silverton two years ago. He claims it was his love of the iconic film, Mad Max that was filmed in Silverton with Mel Gibson that drew him here. "It all started in 1982 when I saw Mad Max 2 in England which was showing as a double feature with Mad Max 1." He said. Adrian told photographer Glen Ravo that he left the cinema a different person after watching the films. "My dream was to visit the sites of both movies which I did in 2004. Then I decided to live in Aus-tralia because of Mad Max. That brought me here to Silverton and I opened the Mad Max Mu-seum." ABC Open producer for Broken Hill, Jenia Ratcliffe said Portrait of a Stranger has created an op-portunity for people to introduce themselves to people they would normally pass by. "And it's given people a perfect opportunity to pull out their camera and harness venture into online photographic story telling". ABC Open is a new and exciting way for people in regional Australia to connect and share their stories on the ABC. The exhibition was curated by ABC Open producers Catherine Marciniak and Jenia Ratcliffe.
